Smart Playlist sorting

Is there any way to layer sort in a smart playlist in Itunes?
example :
A podcast is Tagged wrong so to link the four hours daily podcast I would need to sort as follows
Release date
=> Track
I know you can edit the tags.. I want to know if there is an easier/faster path then dumping the four hours into a running dumb playlist in the correct order.

Its a daily radio show. The way I deal with it now is to sort by release day then drop the tracks in the correct order into a normal playlist.
Is there a way to sort a smart playlist twice, for example in standard music, First by year then by track?

  • How can I make a smart playlist sort album by artist in order of size?

I'm trying to figure out a way to make a playlist of songs I generally like from a very large library to fit on my iPod. The songs aren't rated, and I don't want to have a totally random selection chosen by a smart playlist.
I thought a good way to pare down the list would be to sort album by artist, and then filter that list in order of the size that each artist takes up. It's more important to get rid of an artist that I don't like that also hogs a lot of space than one that maybe only has one track. I figure if I could scan down the list and exclude the worst offenders, it conceivably would make the task much simpler.

    I usually make two playlists.
One playlist with favorites I do want on the iPod and another smart playlist to fill the rest of the iPod. Just limit the size to th esize of the iPod minus wthe size of my iPod selection playlist.

  • Bug: iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5 podcast smart playlist sort order and how to fix.

There seems to be a bug in iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5 involving the sort order of a smart playlist of podcasts. I created such a playlist and sorted by release date on iTunes but I noticed it had a different sort order on the iPod Touch.
After playing around with it a bit I found that the only way to preserve the sort order that I have in iTunes on the iPod Touch is to uncheck "Live Updating" in the smart playlist.

Confirming this incredibly annoying bug.  Basic list sorting not working... real bottom shelf work apple.
workaround update:  limit to must be turned on, set it to an absurdly high number if you don't want to actually limit the playlist, then one of the sortby options in that submenu will work.   The live update checkbox is irrelevant from experimentation.
This workaround does NOT fix the fundamental problem: sort order from itunes in smart playlists is not being synced and preserved in ios5 devices.
This is the latest in a long string of debacles which is making me seriously consider swapping to debian stable. (snow leopard to lion was a severe downgrade in performance for anyone doing heavy multitasking.. scheduling is FUBAR... when a command option escape beachballs on a brand new core 17 machine, your OS has serious problems with nice levels)

  • IPad music smart playlist sort

I have a problem with the sort order of smart playlists being different than the computer I am synching with? Any ideas?. I hav ipad2 synced with an iMac 27" running lion. Any help very much appreciated

    it's a bug, but here's the workaround:
at the bottom of the playlist, select "Limit to [however many] items selected by [choose the order you prefer].
    • by "limiting" to a high number of items or GB, you won't be limiting the playlist at all.
    • to sort alphabetically, choose "selected by name." (or whatever other option you want).
after doing this, you shouldn't see any change to the items displayed in the smart playlist in itunes. however, the playlist will now sync properly to your idevices.  :-)

  • Smart playlist sort order issue

I'm having an issue sorting a smart playlist. I've searched through other questions on here but can't find the identical issue.
I've created a smart playlist that contains the contents of two other smart playlists. I've tried to sort this list by 'name', by clicking on the arrow in the column heading, but the list still leaves the two playlists separately, ie. it sorts each original playlist separately, and then puts one after the other in the play order.
I have other smart playlists constucted in the same way, and have no issues with them, and I can't see what the difference is with this one!
    I'm using 11.0.4.4, on a Windows 7 PC.

I am also having the same problem. Running the newest iTunes and iPhone software my smart playlists are not working correctly. My "Recently Added" is correct in iTunes, and if I look at the playlist on my iPhone info in iTunes it is correct there, but the actual playlist on my iPhone is populated entirely with audiobook files. I have tried deleting and recreating the playlist which gives the same results. I have also specified that items within the playlist should be music files only and still get the same results.
I have a playlist that's Top 50 Most Played that's also not behaving properly (ie correct in iTunes but not on my iPhone).
    Any suggestions?

  • Smart Playlist sort

I've created a smart playlist to pull out a specific artists podcast that I've never played. On iTunes, I've got it sorted by release date, but on the touch it sorts by name. Anyway to fix that.

I see that option on smart playlists in itunes, but I don't have that option for smartplaylists on my touch.

  • Smart playlist sort by "where"

I am a PowerBook user who has limited hard drive space. Thus, most of my music is on an external hard drive at home, and a select few albums are stored on my PowerBook for emergency music needs.
I would keep more on my laptop if I could create a smart playlist that used the "Where" portion of the Get Info on a song. That way, I could shuffle just the music I have with me.

I see that option on smart playlists in itunes, but I don't have that option for smartplaylists on my touch.

  • Smart playlist sort by Genius data status?

I have a very extensive library and would love to be able to create a Smart Playlist to monitor the availability of Genius matching data on all my songs.  It doesn't show up on the list of query options currently - has anyone found a workaround to do this?  If not, Apple folks - what can you do to make this happen?
Edit:  I know "iTunes Store" isn't necessarily the best category for this question but it won't let me post it under the general iTunes heading.  Mr/Ms Admin - if there is a better place for this, please feel free to relocate accordingly.

I see that option on smart playlists in itunes, but I don't have that option for smartplaylists on my touch.

  • ITunes Match Smart Playlist sorting on iOS7 by date added?

    Playlist works find on iTunes.
Messed up on both iPad + iPhone
Criteria basically sorts by genre, and only for songs added within X months.
I have tried to add the criteria "Kind = music", and also limiting to 9999 songs, sorted by date.
The first few songs are correct and in the right order, but after that there are just random songs.
    Any ideas?

Hi guys, i have cracked it!!
Ok, manage music manually on your iphone, plug into your computer in itunes to do all this
. In each playlist, Sort by date added latest date at top of page
. On yr iphone, make a new playlist, call it ie: chill 2 or pop 2 etc
. Grab the chill playlist from iphone playlist and drag all into chill 2 folder
. Delete chill playlist from iphone
. Rename chill 2 playlist to be 'chill' same name as itunes playlist so it can sync when you sync again
I did this with all my playlists, within the iphone itself whilst connected to computer itunes, now on my iphone, i see all my playlists as date added not alphabetical!!
This has annoyed me for ages!! So glad i cracked it!! Found no answers on the internet, but so many people asking!!
    Cheers and goodluck

  • Reorganizing individual items within a podcast smart playlist

With the help of some fine folks from here, I was finally able to create a couple smart playlists on my 5th gen classic iPod, but now I have a new problem: I seem unable to organize the individual podcasts into any playing order. I'd like them to automatically play in order from the earliest downloaded to the most recently downloaded. But no matter what I do in iTunes in the smart playlist itself, once it's synced to my iPod, the playlist is in alphabetical order by artist.
Anybody have any suggestions of how I might correct this? Thanks!

obviously Apple does not consider this a bug...
It's hard to imagine that Apple might not consider it a bug. Personally I chalk it up to the fact that (a) it's a relatively harmless (albeit annoying) bug; and (b) they've got tons of bugs to fix and this one hasn't made it to the top of the list yet. I've added this to my list of bugs to test with every new release (because Apple frustratingly refuses to issue release notes that tells us what bugs have been fixed).
Regardless, their users obviously consider the loss of smart playlist sorting a bug. Please join us in complaining to Apple about this:

  • Multiple libraries/smart playlists for different disks, or sort by location

    Hey.
My iTunes music is physically stored on my computer's local hard disk, on an external hard disk, and on a remote server from which I stream online. When my computer is disconnected from my external hard disk or from the internet, I don't want to seeing unreachable tracks in my iTunes library; I'd rather have a list of songs which are available for me to play. I'd like to create multiple libraries, one for each disk.
Or I'd like to create smart playlists which automatically fill with content from specified locations (as opposed to content added by artist, duration, last playtime, etc).
Or I'd like to be able to sort my library based on physical file location.
As far as I've searched, this isn't yet possible. Anyone know how to make this work, or know how to suggest this feature to Apple?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Thanks for your reply. This worked but it doesnt seem to be consistent.. not sure if the fact that I have a smart playlist based on another smart playlist (only because I want 5 anded conditions + 1 or'd which is playcount=0) and hence something goes wrong?
Any better way overall to manage these?  I now have 4 pairs of these.
Also, any way to have a Smart Playlist that selects only video?  They have the Media Kind = Podcast, but no Media Type = Video..
    Many thanks,

  • Smart playlist not sorted correctly on ipod

I have a smart playlist in my iTunes 10.0, which contains all podcasts (with play count 0), sorted by release date.
Unfortunately, this playlist is NOT sorted correctly on my ipod (nano, 5th generation). After syncing with itunes, the ipod playlist has some apparently random order (not by release date, not even by name, artist or anything, it really seems random).
It's strange that, if I click on my ipod under "DEVICES" in itunes and click the playlist there, the correct order is shown (by release date). But again, on the ipod it is actually not sorted.

I have a smart playlist for my podcast's and I normally sort them by the date added (oldest to newest) or by release date. No mater what I do now they only show up on my iPhone in date added order newest to oldest and I am unable to re-order them. I have a number of other playlists that work fine it is just this one smart playlist that is acting up. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • IPod (Mini) refuse to sort smart playlists

    Hello helpful ones.
I've got a rather annoying problem. I have a few smart playlists on my iPod Mini, like most people. I've set my iTunes to NOT autosync with the iPod. This is because the iPod does not have enough storage space for this feature.
Anyway, take the "recently added"-playlist for example. I've set it up to return the 50 newest songs, and sort them by their title/name. Whenever I drag-n-drop a new file onto the iPod, it appears in the playlist but allways ends up at the bottom. The iPod is totally disregarding my sorting instructions.
Playlist details, roughly translated from Norwegian:
    Match the following criteria:
    <Date added> <is in the last> <3> <months>
    Limit to <50> <songs> selected/sorted by <most recently added>
    <auto update>
iTunes on the other hand, sorts the playlist just fine. I seems like iTunes won't bother to update the playlist on the iPod, for some reason (I guess this is how it works, as it seems that the iPod itself aren't capable of much database handling).
I'm using an iPod Mini with firmware version 1.4 (all though it seems like this problem has been there with previous versions, but I can't really remember) and iTunes version 6.0.1.3 (Norwegian).
Does anyone have a clue what I'm doing wrong, or why my iPod is acting up?
Thanks for taking the time to read this

I read most of that thread before posting my question. It seems like the problems mentioned in that scenario gets solved when connecting the iPod to a computer.
That's what I can't understand here. When browsing the playlist on the iPod from within iTunes, everything seems updated and ok. But when I'm accessing the same playlist on the iPod itself after disconnecting it from the computer, the newly added songs just gets appended to the bottom of the list. I.e. no sorting of titles.
Just for the record, I completly restored both the iPod firmware (erasing everything) and the iTunes installation on my computer. I also reinstalled the ipodservice-thing that runs when you connect the device.

  • Sort Order in Smart Playlist iTunes 9.1

Now that I've upgraded to 9.1 I am finding that the sort order is gone wrong in Smart Playlists. What is happening is that artists are being sorted by their first name rather than by their last name regardless of what I have entered in Sort Artist field.
However, the sort works as it should in the Library list.
So, using Paul McCartney as an example; I have in the Artist field *Paul McCartney*, in the Sort Artist field I have *McCartney Paul*. When I view my music in the Library list he is sorted under M. But when I view my music in a Smart Playlist he is sorted under P.

First give the list a "kick" by sorting by some other fields, closing and reopening iTunes, and then sorting again by Artist.
Also look at the Sorting tab and make sure the tracks do not have data that could be interfering with the Sort Artist, namely Sort Album Artist.
If neither of those helps, you have probably discovered a bug in 9.1, which you can report here:

  • IOS5 Playlist Sort Order Issue (not smart list just normal playlist)

So i cant figure out why my music wont sort thwy way i wanted to in each of my playlist. Before IOS5 i can sort my songs in my playlist to what ever  i wanted and not it just stuck at oldest song added to newest song added.. i want it the other way around...
What happen apple? it was fine in the last OS... am i missing something here.
I would like the ability to sort my music any which way i want to!

Ugh..  This is driving me crazy!  Yes, the adding of the rule "playlist is music" fixes this issue when you're syching an ipad or iphone, etc.  BUT, that very rule causes iTunes Match to fail!  So for any of my devices I have iTunes match enabled for...which is all of them now, my playlists are all jumbled.  Here's an example of how weird this issue is:
On my iPad I can see my playlists.  When I click on the playlist the music order seems random.  I have to select a track to play.  Once I've done that, I can click on the picture of the album up at the top where it lists how far into the track you are, etc. and that changes the screen to a full sized picture of the album.  At the bottom of THIS screen is another playlist icon (bottom right of the screen).  If I tap THAT item, suddenly my playlist is listed CORRECTLY.  I can then select the first track of the playlist and tracks will play in the proper order after that.
This is absolutely insane and so opposite of Apple's "it's simple" and "it just works" mantra that it's not even funny.  To play my smart playlists in order on my iPad or iphone with iTunes Match enabled, I have to select a playlist, get a track playing, change the display to show the album cover, tap the playlist icon at the bottom of THAT new display, and THEN I can select the first track in my playlist and everything is good.  Something needs to be done about this.  It's been an issue since iTunes Match was activated.  BTW, iTunes Match won't synch smart playlists with the "playlist is music" rule selected because it says that 'playlists that reference other playlists' cannot by synched.  It was crazy to have to add that rule to begin with but I could live with it.  Now, there's simply no apparent way to fix the issue.
