Smart playlist stop uprdating on the iPod

Hello there,
Last week I bought a brand new 4GB iPod nano (2nd gen, ver. 1.1.3). It syncs to iTunes (ver. 8.2.1.6) on a Windows XP PC. I have some Smart playlists on it which worked great... until today. They no longer update "dynamically".
For example when I change the rating of a song it shows up immediately but the song itself is not removed from the "Top Rated" SPL until I sync my nano to iTunes. On iTunes SPLs work as usual. I've tried "The Five Rs" several times but the problem persists. I read this but it doesn't help in this case.
Thanks in advance.
Stoyan

Also, you may want to use the iPod Video forums from now on, as that is the iPod you have, rather than just a color screen iPod.

  • Was the Smart Playlist podcast order bug on iPod nano fixed in iTunes 11

iTunes 9 broke the order in which Smart Playlists play podcasts in on the Nano.  See "Smart Playlist order not respected on ipod nano after upgrade to iTunes 9" (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2154509).  Has this been fixed in iTunes 11?

    Hi MNM1974,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you want to know how to manually manage the music and playlists on your iPod nano. The article below provides more information about automatic and manual syncing of content to your device, and it will walk you through the process.

  • Smart Playlists not updating to my iPod

I've got a few Smart Playlists set up. They select by "Least Recently Played". The tunes that are listed for the Smart Playlists seem to follow the rules I created. When I listen to a bunch of tunes on my iPod and then Sync to iTunes, I don't get the Smart Playlists copied to the iPod.
I've got "Sync music" checked, the "Selected playlists" button is popped, and I've checked the Playlists I want to copy to my iPod.
Smart Playlists seem pretty cool, but if they only work once, they're not very helpful. What am I missing?
    Thanks.

    Patrick,
I listened to "Chocolate Jesus" by Tom Waits on my way home from school tonight. I just synced up to my desktop. In iTunes I see the "last played" field has been updated with tonight. It isn't showing up in my smart playlist, but it is still on the iPod and on the iPod selection playlist in iTunes.
I don't know how to paste an image onto this posting, so I'll describe what's on the smart playlist window when I'm editing GenInfuser.
[Checked] Match [all] of the following rules:
Play Count is less than 5
    My Rating is not **
    My Rating is not *
    My Rating is not ***
    Playlist is GenCore
[checked] Limit to 1750 MB selected by least recently played
    [] Match only checked items
    [checked] Live updating.
Here's what I see for GenStation (the smart playlist that is supposed to be synced to the iPod):
[checked] Match any of the following rules:
    Playlist is GenInfuser
    Playlist is GenSprinkler
    [] Limit to ...
    [] Match only checked items
    [Checked] Live updating
I just tried checking "Limit to" 1750 MB least recently played on GenStation and it didn't start copying over new music. Actually it copied over 9 tunes. There's at least a couple hundred tunes that have been recently played on the iPod and several times that many on iTunes that have never been played.
I guess the other pertinent info is that I've got a 4 GB nano and I'm running iTunes 7.0.2.16.
    Thanks for your help, Patrick.

  • Smart Playlists Stop Playing After Each Track

After updating iTunes to version 10.0.1.22 my smart playlists stop playing after each track. All songs or Podcasts in my smart playlists are checked so they should be playing consecutively but they're not.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure the little boxes to the left of the song names are checked. If you need to check all the songs in a single view at once, hold the CTRL key and check any one of the boxes.

  • Smart Playlist in iTunes not the same as on iPod?

    Hi all,
Currently I am in the process of making my entire CD collection (> 800 CD's) available on my new iPod classic. Ripping goes fine, no problem at all. But I have a problem with the Smart Playlists. Every CD in my collection has a unique number. I put that number in the 'Comments' section of every ripped CD (select all tracks of an album, go into 'Get info' and fill the 'Comments' section with a number like 0245).
In iTunes I create a smart playlist containing every CD within a range of, say, 02. In iTunes I then see every CD starting with the number 02 (from 0200 to 0299). When i sync with my iPod, the playlists are available, but the sorting is not ok. I see a lot of tracks, but not organised by CD as in iTunes. Is there a way to change this so that on the iPod the sorting is the same as in iTunes.

Select your Smart Playlist in iTunes, arrange it in the order you want, then right-click on the Smart Playlist title in the sources panel and click on *Copy to Play Order*. Sync. Your iPod should now have the correct play order.

  • Smart Playlists aren't sorted the way I want them to be on the iPod touch.

    Hello,
I have two Smart Playlists that automatically adds any songs that have four/five stars. In iTunes, it's sorted alphabetically (ascending) but when I check on my iPod, it seems to be random. It wasn't like that a month ago.
Anyone know what is going on with my iPod?
Thanks if you're able to help me out.

  • Smart Playlist Song Order Problem on iPod Nano 6th G

recently i got an iPod Nano 6th G after years of using my iPod Classic 5.5G, and so far it has been a bliss actually if it wasnt for one small thing
i have a somewhat large collection of music that i have - with a few exceptions - put in one big smart playlist with the rules provided in the pic to fit my needs
on my old iPod Classic when i sync it i find it in the ipod in the same ordered that shows on my iTunes, but with my iPod Nano that is no longer the case.... even the the same playlist in my iPod have the songs in the exact order as it is in my library on iTunes, once i unblug it the play list on iPod becomes arranged alphabetically by artist and obviousely that is my problem
so if anyone could guid me to correct it or even the cause of it i'ld be very thankful

Can someone point me to a forum somewhere where I can get help with this? I'm obviously posting to the wrong place. Thanks!

  • Smart Playlist is not syncing to iPod after upgrade to iTunes 9

Since upgrading to iTunes 9, one of my smart playlists is no longer syncing to my iPod, however, it syncs fine with my iPhone.
The conditions for the playlist are:
    Media kind is podcast
    PlayCount is 0
Any ideas why it's not syncing?

Quick fix: Make a regular playlist. Drag the contents of the smart playlist into it. Sync the new playlist.
WIthout seeing the rules for your smart list it is hard to guess what the problem is, but you may get better results if you break it down into more sublists gathered together in a playlist folder.

  • I Want My Smart Playlists To Update On MY iPod

    Hi,
I have a fifth generation ipod with software version 1.3, which no longer updates smart playlists on the go. I was hoping that apple would release an update, but it looks like they've moved on. So, I'm hoping that I can download and install 1.2 (or whatever the previous firmware was). Does anybody know where I can get it and if there's a trick to getting it on the ipod? Thanks.

  • Podcast smart playlists no longer syncing to iPod nano?

I've been a long-time iPod podcast listener, despite the obvious intent to push this product into oblivion. I am no longer seeing smart podcast playlists on my iPod. This is a HUGE bummer to me, as I listen to podcasts while I run. And I hate running with my iPhone.
Anyone else not seeing smart podcast playlists syncing to their iPod anymore?

Here is the solution: After five hours of endless error messages and incomplete re-syncs, it all boiled down to this: Restore the iPod Touch via iTunes. Everything was first erased from the iPod but then everything- contents (photos, music and settings) were restored from iTunes perfectly. Finally now MobileMe is also on all my Apple products - including the heretofore frustrating iPod.
Hope someone can save themselves a lot of aggravation by trying this fix should the updates prove to be less the "seamless"!
    Cheers!

  • Smart playlists not live-updating on iPod

I use smart playlists for listening to my UNPLAYED podcasts and video podcasts. When an episode is played through completion, it should be removed from the playlist. This doesn't work live while listening to the ipod. The smart playlist only seems to update after syncing with the computer. This live-updating smart playlist feature worked fine on my second-gen nano.

As I know for current moment few parameters do not work for live updateble smart playlist. Try to remove Podcast and Video Kind from your playlist(s).
It's possible replace Podcast parametr for "Genre is Podcast"(or set your podcasts genre), and Video Kind for Kind is contains video.
Please, tell me about your progress.

  • ITunes 9 not allowing most smart playlists to automatically sync with iPod

Oh dearie me. This is another major blunder for iTunes 9 - which I cannot see anyone else has noticed yet (but sorry if I couldn't find an existing related post).
Since upgrading to iTunes 9- almost all of my smart playlists (whick worked perfectly before) have disappeared from my iPod. They have also removed themselves from the list in iTunes where I choose which playlists to sync. Yes- I use the 'sync only checked songs & playlists' option (but please don't suggest I manually manage music, as I've been there before).
The problem seems to happen when a smart playlist references 2 or more other (smart or normal) playlists in iTunes. This excludes about 95% of my playlists from syncing in iTunes 9.
Before the upgrade I noticed that iTunes posted an exclamation mark next to any playlist on my iPod that had a rule referencing a playlist in iTunes- but they still sunc perfectly for years. I mean if Apple allowed us to make our own smart playlists only for the iPod- then I would understand- but its the only way I can see to have a playlist for example that plays all favourite but not recently played dance music (regardles of actual genre); nor anything I have moved to a manual playlist called 'not for syncing'.
As a test, I tried an experiment with a new smart playlist which said so long as the song appears in (all) 2 smart playlists- to see when it would become 'syncable'. As would be expected- it was not available to sync. As soon as I deleted the 2nd playlist rule- ie it only had to be in 1 playlist, it became 'syncable'. As soon as I added a 2nd rule again- be it a smart or normal playlist- it became 'unsyncable' again (disappeared from the sync list).
Apple please fix this ASAP. I cannot see this as being desirable behavior in any way, shape or form.
And while you are at it with the new improvements with iTunes 9 playlisting- please add an option to exclude certain 'match' parameters- eg match x and y, but exclude anything that matches z. Besides allowing for much better playlisting, that would (to a degree) also provide a workable workaround to the problem above.
    Yours faithfully,
    Mike

Cheers for chiming in- but I don't think that will solve this problem. I have no podcasts on my iPod- only mp3s. My problem is I have way too much music in my library- over 300GB. So I have all my iTunes smart playlists- eg genre Dubstep- but then I have an iPod version of each of these eg Dubstep iPod- which says match both criteria- playlist is Dubstep, & playlist is not 'Master not sync'. Every smart playlist on my iPod revolves around this playlist- whose rules are if any of the following 2 criteria match: rating is not between 1&2 stars; playlist is not the normal manual playlist called 'not for iPod sync'- where I drop any mp3s that I don't need on my iPod. This scheme worked perfectly before.
But I am gonna chew on what you said today- maybe there is a clue in there or maybe if I experiment with the 'music' rule. Either way- this is not an improvement- it's about 200 steps back. I still maintain that the problem I am seeing is not intentional coding. Something broke in the codebase & now iTunes 9 has playlist / syncing bugs which need fixing.
Either that, or Apple need to finally release a 500GB iPod- so I can get rid of my iPod specific playlists & sync all my iTunes playlists. Then I would even consider putting podcasts on there as well...;) Heck maybe even some video... crazy idea, I know.

  • Smart playlists not working on my ipod touch?

my smart playlists (such as top 25 most played, recently added etc) are not working on my ipod touch 3rd gen 64gb. they are syncing the correct info on my other ipod nano, but on my ipod touch they are coming up with different songs. this is very annoying!!! please someone help me?
does anyone else have this problem?

  • Smart playlist not sorted correctly on ipod

I have a smart playlist in my iTunes 10.0, which contains all podcasts (with play count 0), sorted by release date.
Unfortunately, this playlist is NOT sorted correctly on my ipod (nano, 5th generation). After syncing with itunes, the ipod playlist has some apparently random order (not by release date, not even by name, artist or anything, it really seems random).
It's strange that, if I click on my ipod under "DEVICES" in itunes and click the playlist there, the correct order is shown (by release date). But again, on the ipod it is actually not sorted.
    Message was edited by: powerbookuser99

I have a smart playlist for my podcast's and I normally sort them by the date added (oldest to newest) or by release date. No mater what I do now they only show up on my iPhone in date added order newest to oldest and I am unable to re-order them. I have a number of other playlists that work fine it is just this one smart playlist that is acting up. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Some Smart Playlists Stop Syncing in 9.0.2

Since updating to 9.0.2, I've been having trouble with certain smart playlists syncing either to my iPhone or iPod Classic.
Through experimentation, I finally discovered that the issue occurs when a smart playlist has as its criteria two or more other playlists with an "all" operator. In such a case, the playlists become invisible under the music tab for syncing in either the iPhone or the iPod. Switching the operator to "any" makes it immediately reappear. Having only one playlist in the criteria, regardless of how many other criteria there are fixes the issue.
I rely on such smart playlists for my 8 GB iPhone. I keep a manual "not on iPhone" playlist, so that I can easily modify my existing playlists to fit on the smaller space.
    Any idea of a fix?

Yes, "me too" on my iPod Touch 3G with 3.1.1 and iTunes 9.0.1
In addition to the out of order Smart playlists, here is something else odd.
I have a playlist that looks for playcount is not 0. As soon as the track is played, it was dropping off of the playlist. Now, what happens is tracks do not drop off individually as played but rather when the last track in the list has played. So, in other words, if you play the last track of this type of list, go out and then back into the list, it drops off.
    REALLY ANNOYING, APPLE!
    FIX IT!
