Smart Playlists/Airplane Mode

Airplane mode is causing some trouble for me...while it makes it possible to listen to music while on a plane, it's also interfering with my smart playlists. I have a playlist set up so that once a song/album is played it will be removed when synced, making room for more music to be added. When I put the iphone in airplane mode while on vacation and listen to music, the next time I sync the iphone doesn't record the music I listened to. I've also noticed that the music listened to in between toggling airplane mode on/off isn't synced either. And since I'm a last.fm user, since the music isn't synced that means it isn't scrobbled either.
Anyone out there have any advice on this issue or can it be added to a list of bug to be fixed at a later date? Thanks in advance.

Good question. I'd say that the iphone marks 90% of the music I play when Airplane Mode is off. After syncing I often find that there are a few songs or entire albums I have listened to all the way through but have not been marked as such. Because of the way I have my smart playlist set up, it's a bother but in the greater scheme of things it's a nuisance I'd have thought would be pretty easy to sort out.
Any other thoughts out there? Is this problem showing up for anyone else?

    Sounds like
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem. A trick that works frequently with iPhones:
Settings > AirPlane Mode ON, Do Not Disturb ON
Power down and wait 5-10 minutes
    Power up

  • Smart playlists not updating live after 3.0 upgrade

I have a smart playlist: 'songs I've not played in a while'. Before the upgrade, if i had 100 songs in the playlist and played one, the playlist would update and the next time I'd access it I'd have 99 songs in it. however, after upgrading the playlist is not updating itself. It will stay at 100 songs and the only way to make it update itself is to sync with itunes. The placounts etc are all being remembered, but my playlist is no longer updating by itself.
Help! What can I do to fix this?

First, downgrading the firmware is not something that Apple will support, so if something does go wrong (not likely, but remotely possible) you could end up with a device that does not work.
Second, in order to downgrade to an earlier version of firmware, you have to already have it on your computer. If you never did a firmware update prior to installing 3.0, then you don't have a 2.x firmware on your computer to install. While you might be able to find a copy of 2.x, there have been reports of problems with the copies people are finding. But if you ever did a firmware update, say from 2.2 to 2.2.1 then you would have 2.2.1 on your computer already. If that's the case, then follow these instructions:
1- Connect your Touch to your computer and put it into "DFU mode" (Google that for instructions). Getting into DFU mode is a little tricky to get the timing just right, so pay attention to the instructions and what to look and listen for.
2- iTunes will tell you that the Touch needs to be restored to factory conditions (this is expected). Instead of clicking the Restore button, hold down the SHIFT key as you click Restore (on a Mac I think it's Option-Restore). You'll see a navigation window for you to locate the firmware. Navigate your way to where the firmware is stored on your computer, which on a PC is:
    C:\Documents and Settings\(account name)\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates
(on a Mac these files are located at: ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates)
Select the proper .ipsw file for your device. For 2.2.1 the file is "iPod2,12.2.1_5H11aRestore.ipsw"
3- Your Touch will go through the Restore process. When you get to the point where you choose to re-load your last backup or set up the Touch as a new iPod, choose the new iPod selection since the backup contains 3.0-specific information that may not work with earlier firmware.
4- You'll then have to re-load your Touch's contents, including music, video, web links, settings preferences, etc.

  • Sync "smart playlist" without song-titles?

Is it possible to synchronize only a smart playlist without all the song-titles what are included?
A example; In i Tunes i have a very large song library on my mac. Then i have synchronized some titles, with "Check Selection" mode. Now i have a "Smart Playlist" on i-tunes, that includes only song-titles, that i haven't "rated" before. Now, is it possible to import/sync only the "Smart-Playlist" without all the song-titles that are included on Itunes?
So i want only have the smart-playlist on my ipod-touch, to hear the unrated songs, that are already synced.
Other example, i have a smart playlist that includes only the song-titles, rated from 1 till 3 stars. Now i want that smart playlist on the iPod, to hear only the songs, rated from 1 till 3 stars, i already synced on the IPod.
Problem is this..: When i sinc a smart-list like that, the memory on my IPod is prompt overloaded...
I hope you understand what i mean, and would be great to have a solution for that...

  • Smart Playlists and Radio

It is to my understanding that there is some way to be able to create smart playlists with your own local radio stations on it. If this is possible can anyone clue me in on how?
    Thanks

Make sure you are not set to shuffle play on the iPod. I believe podcast episodes are set to skip in shuffle mode.

  • Can't i modify my smart playlists in iTunes

Suddenly I am not able to modify the settings for any of my Smart Playlists.  I am able to get to the update mode (command+i) however if I modify the smart parameters it does not save or change the results of the settings.
    Any help out there?

Wow- I just realized that the smartlists finally updated with the new settings.  It appears it's iCloud and Music Match that has to run before the settings are finalized.  It took over 5 minutes.

  • Live Updating Smart Playlist... but not live updating iPod?

I have several video files that I want to convert to iPod-compatible MP4. I have a program to do the conversion in a batch mode and then add the files to my iTunes library.
I also have a live-updating Smart Playlist (for all files where the Kind includes 'video' and the playcount is 0) to catch these files as they come in. I have this playlist as one of the ones set to be automatically updated on my iPod.
However, in my test runs, the video is properly converted and added to my iTunes library, and the Smart Playlist picks it up as well. However, it does not then send the file to my iPod (which is already in its dock) unless I first eject the iPod and reconnect it.
I'd really like to get this working, as I'm hoping to do this on a somewhat regular basis--have a selection of stuff queued up when I go to bed, and then have it waiting for me on my iPod when I wake up to go to the gym. It worked for me over the weekend, when I bought an episode of Knight Rider from the music store while the iPod was connected--it was downloaded and added to the playlist, and then copied to the iPod with no intervention from me. Unless my memory is faulty or something.

    Welcome to the Discussions Steavis,
As far as I know, a sync to the iPod only occurs upon the first attachment, as long as your settings are set for such action.
The iPod will only sync after the initial attachment if you initiate the sync yourself. I believe it is in a pull-down menu, and/or CTRL-Click the iPod in the source list and select "Sync".
I am not sure if that is all correct, but in my experience, if I have connected my iPod, it syncs, then I say load in a CD to iTunes, I must re-sync the iPod before they transfer.
Not knowing what you are using for this automation to get the app that converts and adds, etc, can do, I might explore a script that runs at a specific time of day and initiates a sync to any iPod connected. That should be fairly easy to do.

  • Advanced use of Smart Playlists: Union of two playlists

I know how to make the intersection of two playlist into one using the smart playlist, but i'm looking for make the union of two playlist using this... The logical 'and' is easy to implement but I cannot find the way to set the logical 'or'. The example that lead me to this question is the following:
I wanna create a list called 'Trending', composed by the songs which:
    1. have being included in the last four weeks.
    2. its playcount is up to or more than five.
(this playlist has been already created as it's really easy to do -merely intersection-)
OR (and here is the problem)
    1. are in a determinated playlist (in this case is a common playlist where i put songs i rediscovered in my library)
    2. its playcount is at least one.
    (this playlist is also created)
The outcome would be a cool playlist giving you the songs that are trending for one (new song listened more than five times) or another (a song you want to 'rescate') reason for you in that moment.
So the problem can be simplified to if it's possible to set the union of two playlists.
    Thanks!

Do you mean using a Smart Slice for reporting purposes? They don't mean anything with the contexts of Planning forms, unless you mean planning with a small "p".
If you're talking about Hyperion Planning, the access you provide on a form for the POV and even the members in the rows and columns act as a kind of Smart Slice. Even in Planning ad-hoc mode, I don't believe you have access to members that aren't defined in the form itself -- it's always a subset. Would that meet your requirement?
It would be beyond awesome for Planning to support Essbase METAREAD filter functionality, as it would limit Planners to their Planning access. As that still isn't the case, I can definitely see the utility of having Planners go against a Smart Slice for their data as you could tailor the access so that the Essbase ad-hoc matched Planning.
The problem with the above approach is that you'd have to create as many Smart Slices as there are Planners, assuming each Planner had different access. That would get confusing, and maintenance intensive, pretty quickly.
Could you perhaps create a handful of Smart Slices and have different Planner groups connect to them? I'm not sure how you'd stop one group connecting to the "wrong" Smart Slice. I am pretty sure, even with 11.1.2, that there is no Smart Slice provisioning. Although it would be nice.
You can also have Planning Smart Slices (I have never used it) although I can't say I really see the utility of it if the only purpose is to restrict access. I guess you could use it to bring some of the controls in but I wonder whether you wouldn't just do that in Essbase. It is nice to have choices, however.

  • Smart playlist dilemna

I import a number of live-music concerts into my iTunes library weekly. Each contains 20-25 tracks. All are from the same artist.
I'm trying to create a smart playlist that contains only the most recently imported album. ie. If I import 3 albums on a given day, only the most recently imported one should show up in the playlist.
I'm probably missing something really easy here and it's driving me nuts. I need the option to set up a rule that says "Album is most recent" but iTunes won't let me.

My scripts are for Windows, not Mac...
Put the playlist in Album List view and turn on the Album Artwork panel at the lower left. If music is playing tap Now Playing to switch to Selected Item. Select each track in turn. You should find it has no artwork of its own. Add something appropriate if you want.
At a guess the artwork in Grid mode is coming from other tracks with the same Album name & Album Artist. Depending on just how obsessively you've organized your library those tracks might not be in the same folder as the ones missing art, which will be why the script didn't fix them up.

  • Possible to exclude double songs in smart playlist?

I made a smart playlist based on a category. However the list contains a lot of times the same song. Is it possible to automatically exclude doubles that will be added by itself during time?
    André

I have about 600 songs that I have put in the genre of "chrismas" I have also rated them. I created a smart playlist in iTunes for 4 stars and up tunes within the christmas genre. From that in iTunes I get about 500 songs in that smart playlist (I like christmas songs). I sync it with the iPod. When I go to that smart playlist I get about 166 songs not the 500 that shows up in my iTunes.
Now I did discover one more thing today. I like to play my playlists in shuffle song mode. That is where I see this problem. Well today I turned that off and.... the 500 songs are shown ( what I mean by this is when a tune is playing you get the message that this is " 1 of 500. Same playlist in shuffle mode I get "1 of 166"

  • Shuffle With Smart Playlist

    Hey,
I've been having this problem for awhile, and hopefully someone can help me out with it. I just got my ipod about a month ago, also got the iTrip. For anyone who has the iTrip, they know that the stations are mixed in with the music in shuffle mode. So I created a 'Smart Playlist' to get rid of the stations. The only thing i'm having a problem with, is when I'm in my car and i want to play the smart play list (which by the way is called 'Griffin Technology) I don't know how to shuffle the songs. I don't wanna listen to every song in a row by the same artist. Does anyone know how to shuffle the songs in a 'smart playlist'?
    Thank you

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
This is the same way you can shuffle normal playlists as well...
On your iPod go to settings-->shuffle and set it to songs.
Now go back to the main menu and go to music-->playlists and find your playlist. Once the name of the playlist is highlighted just hit play!

  • 3.1.3 Software Update and Smart Playlists with Podcasts

I did the 3.1.3 update last night and now my smart playlist containing podcasts is gone.
Has anyone else seen this behavior?
    Any idea on a fix?
    Thanks

For whatever it's worth, 3.1.3 appears to have fixed my problems with Smart Playlists...
In 3.1 and 3.1.2 I'd get the same contents of a Smart Playlist between iTunes and the iPhone, but a very different order.
e.g. I have my Podcasts smart playlist set to order by ascending publish date. A bit annoying because I wouldn't get them played back in chronological order on the iPhone, but only an annoyance.
Now since applying 3.1.3 - with no mods to filters or Live Updating I might add - they've back to showing the right order on the iPhone as well as on iTunes. Which is a relief. Long may it continue!
PS: I did also update iTunes to 9.0.3... I don't suppose this would help those on the list having troubles would it?

  • Can't rename smart playlist.

So, I want to make a "top 25 most played" playlist using the smart playlist. For some reason, I couldn't rename the name of that playlist. I tried moving it from one folder to another, I tried to sync and sync, I tried to change the conditions (or whatever it's called) and still no good. The name of the playlist is still "playlist".
There's also that thing where for some reason the number of plays isn't updating properly. No matter how many times I play a song in my iPod, in my PC the number'd stay the same.
I'm beginning to think there's something wrong with the update and syncing, uhm, I don't know. I can still put songs in so at least that's something. Help?

    unhappypeople wrote:

Are you sure this is a Smart Playlist, because the only two ways to add songs to a Smart Playlist are to change the rules of the Playlist or change the attributes of the song so that it then conforms to the rules of the Playlist? You cannot place songs into a Smart Playlist by dragging etc.
To rename a Playlist, Smart or Regular, simply click twice on the text of Playlist name, once to highlight it and the second time to get into edit mode. On the second click, the name will become boxed and highlighted in blue. You then type in the new name and click on the enter button on your keyboard. Look at the screenshots below and notice the difference between them:
    and
Notice also, the icon to the left of the Playlist name, the "gear" icon. That's a Smart Playlist. The screenshot below shows the different icons:
You cannot add songs directly to a Playlist Folder.
For the number of Plays to be correctly updated the following is required:
You have to use Sync to manage the iPod with iTunes. The Play Count will not increase if you use Manually Manage.
The song must be played to the end of the time of the "song file". For example, if the music finishes at 3 minutes 04 seconds, but the "song" continues (silently or fades out) until 3 minutes 07 seconds, you must let the iPod play through to 3 minutes 07 seconds. If you stop the song playing, or stop it by moving to another song at any time before "it" finishes, the Play Count will not increase.
    Also;
With a Regular Playlist, you can drag songs into the list and move them out again yourself. You can also use the Delete command to remove a song from a Regular Playlist while still leaving it in your Library.
With a Smart Playlist, set to be a "Top 25 Most Played", the Playlist will update itself as one song achieves a higher Play Count than a song currently in the list. So if a song is played fully in iTunes, the Play Count will increase by 1. If the song is played on your iPod, when you next Sync the iPod to iTunes, the Play Count will increase by 1. You cannot "delete" a song from a Smart Playlist.
A Smart Playlist, set to include the top 25 most played songs, may have more than 25 songs unless you set the rule to limit the list to 25.
