Smart Playlists crash iTunes

I have the latest iTunes (10.x, b*** 6), and when I went into iTunes all my smart playlists were gone and when i went to create a new one, iTunes stops working and needs to be shut down. I never knew i used the 'Recently Added' Playlist sooo much...Well, actually i did.

*Is there a way to make a subfolder within iTunes.*
You can make folder to put playlists into only. It doesn't to do anything else like put the music into different folders. It just helps to keep playlist straight.
I'm not able to create a playlist list I want without combining two different smart playlist.
and?
Is there some reason you don't want to do this?

  • Smart Playlist in iTunes not the same as on iPod?

    Hi all,
Currently I am in the process of making my entire CD collection (> 800 CD's) available on my new iPod classic. Ripping goes fine, no problem at all. But I have a problem with the Smart Playlists. Every CD in my collection has a unique number. I put that number in the 'Comments' section of every ripped CD (select all tracks of an album, go into 'Get info' and fill the 'Comments' section with a number like 0245).
In iTunes I create a smart playlist containing every CD within a range of, say, 02. In iTunes I then see every CD starting with the number 02 (from 0200 to 0299). When i sync with my iPod, the playlists are available, but the sorting is not ok. I see a lot of tracks, but not organised by CD as in iTunes. Is there a way to change this so that on the iPod the sorting is the same as in iTunes.

Select your Smart Playlist in iTunes, arrange it in the order you want, then right-click on the Smart Playlist title in the sources panel and click on *Copy to Play Order*. Sync. Your iPod should now have the correct play order.

  • How can I get my smart playlists on iTunes match to update automatically on my iPhone?

I've been trying to figure out how to have my smart playlist in iTunes update on my iPhone automatically via iTunes Match, but everytime I create a smart playlist it shows up on my iPhone but it contains every single song in my library rather than just the ones that are supposed to be in the playlist.

Experienced same situation with my iPhone4.  Just started using the cloud last week for my music library.
Solution:  Click "Update iTunes Match" using iTunes on my MacBook Pro.  A minute or two later all of my playlissts appeared on my iPhone.  Hope this is helpful

  • Smart Playlists Crashing

Since the update to iTunes 8.1 every time I go to edit some of my smart playlists the entire application crashes. I can't edit them to check, but If i had to guess these playlists have much more rules than the average smart playlist. Is there a fix for this?

Same problem here after update to 8.1. I've tried to create a new iTunes Library (Option-clicked iTunes and selected new library): it happens with the default smart playlists of the new library, too! So it doesn't even seem to be related to the definition of the playlist.
Could someone please try this to see if it is the same for him?

  • Can't create smart playlists because iTunes can't see all my playlists

I noticed that my smart playlists aren't updating properly. When I tried to edit them, I got an error message saying "This smart playlist depends on one or more playlists that cannot be found."  I am using as one of my rules "Playlist is" but the dropdown list next to that rule does not show all of my playlists. It shows some of my smart playlists, none of the "regular" playlists. That means I cannot fix the smart playlist.
For example, I have a playlist called "exercise" that is a regular playlist. It contains 965 songs that I have added manually. I can see the "Exercise" playlist just fine in iTunes, and I can add/remove songs from it. But my smart playlist, "Top Exercise Rare Recent," does not work, because it depends on the rule "Playlist Is Exercise." When I try to edit the rule "Playlist is," I cannot choose "Exercise" from the dropdown list--that playlist simply does not show up. But it is there. I can see it in iTunes. I just can't see it in the dropdown list.
I don't even know what to try to fix this.
In case it matters, a few versions ago, an iTunes update "lost" my library. I had saved backup of my library files, fortunately, so I did not lose all of my ratings and playlists (at least, I didn't think I did). After I restored my library files, iTunes did not recognize my iPod classic so I had to re-sync it (removing everything that was on it and replacing it with whatever was in iTunes, i.e., exactly the same files). Then the next update broke my ability to burn playlists to cds AND it broke my system clock. I had to revert to a restore point that preceded the iTunes update, then reinstall iTunes, then "repair" the installation to get my cd burning ability back.
I am now using iTunes 11.3.1.2 on a Windows 8.1 PC (64-bit). Wishing I had never update

Thanks for the clarification. Sorry, it's working for me so I'm not sure what to suggest. Perhaps someone else will have ideas.
    Regards.

  • I can't change the view of a smart playlist in iTunes 11.  Columns display at the top will not convert to list

Hi -  I just upgraded from the previous version of iTunes to iTunes 11.  One of my previous playlists appeared as a smart playlist, and when it displays there is a set of columns at the top with a separation splitting the columns from the list.  I am trying to get rid of the columns from the top of this screen, but have been unable to find any information on how to do this.  This only happens in this playlist, and I am unable to locate a view option or display setting that will change it.  The "Column Browser' is unavailable in the view menu.
    Thanks

Is the App-Installation restriction in Settings/General/Restrictions on that iPod activated?
Does the problem come back after restoring "as new iPod" without using the backup?

  • Can't make an unrated smart playlist in itunes

i have 1/2 star ratings enabled on my imac. when i make a smart playlist with "ratings is 0" i get a playlist of all 1/2 star rated songs and none rated 0. i have itunes 11.
i tried it on my macbook (itunes 10.7) and it works fine. but i don't have 1/2 stars enabled on that.

I didn't think that smart playlists would work with half star ratings. However, I discovered that they do recognise the half star, but don't display it in the rule. It all depends on where you click on the star-scale. For example, if you wanted a smart playlist to show all songs you have rated four and a half stars, you click on the left side of the fifth star dot. In this example, it would show a four star rating in the rule, but show four and a half star rated songs in the actual playlist.
So, in your case, Edit Smart Playlist rule screen, click and drag from a star then to the left of the scale. It should recognise that you want all songs rated with nothing, rather than songs rated with half a star. Just make sure your click ends after being dragged past the actual scale. Confusing, I know.
Here is a screenshot of a smart playlist with the same idea of displaying all unrated songs that I created less than fifteen minutes ago.

  • My smart playlists in iTunes match are not interpreting "date added" property correctly for some songs.

I have many smart playlists that are dependent upon the "date added" property of my songs. I use iTunes match on a PC, my iPad (4th gen), and my iPhone 5, and my music is stored on my iMac. For some reason, (on my iPhone only) a handful of songs stubbornly continue to appear in smart playlists even though their "date added" is much earlier than the playlists dictate. And they are the same handful of songs on all playlists that have this problem.
Turning off Live Updating resolves the problem, but then what's the point of a smart playlist if I have to continually update it manually? Turning off iTunes Match on my iPhone, deleting music, and turning iTunes Match back on does not resolve the problem.

I think I have figured this out, so I'll share in case anyone else has this issue. I had automatic downloads enabled for my iPhone, so any iTunes music purchases were automatically downloaded to my phone. As a result, the "date added" attribute of a song is tied to when it was downloaded to the phone rather than when I originally purchased the song and added it to my iTunes library.
I disabled iTunes Match, deleted these songs from my phone, re-enabled iTunes Match, and that seems to have done the trick.

  • Smart playlist in iTunes 11

    Hello,
The select 'random' feature of the smart playlist does often give songs of the same album following each other, which iTunes DJ didn't.
Any way to solve this ?
    Thanks,
    Peter

That's a nice workaround.  But why is there a completely non functional item right there in the" Controls" menu?
Right there it says "Go to Current Song  L"
I type command-l and the menu flashes, and nothing happens.
What happened to the QA department?

  • Share Smart Playlists in iTunes?

Where do smart playlist rules live? I'd like to copy a smart playlist to another user on the same computer without having to re-type the entire list (there are over 60 items). We both use the same media folder which is on an external hard drive that we both can access.
I can export the smart playlist from my account as a regular (static) playlist and import it into the other user account, but I have to do this every time I add something to my account.
I'd really just like the same smart playlist on both accounts without having to re-type the whole thing.

Same problem here! I synced my iPod Touch with my other laptop sing iTunes 9.0.2 and everything is fine. If I sync using 9.0.3, no joy! I'd say we need 9.0.4 to fix this!

  • Mixed Logic Comes to Smart Playlists in iTunes 9!

Smart playlists have always been limited in that you could only use AND or OR logic, but not both in the same smart playlist. For example, if you had multiple criteria you had to choose between matching +All the criteria+ (AND), or +Any of the criteria+ (OR), but not both in the same playlist. This meant that to achieve mixed logic, e.g. "A and (B or C)", you had to use more than one playlist.
With iTunes 9 you can now combine AND and OR logic into one playlist, finally! To add indented criteria, just click the "..." button and the next line of criteria will be treated separately (think parentheses). Give it a try, its really cool!
So now, for example, let's say you wanted a playlist of top Rock and Blues songs that you haven't heard in the last month. Now in one playlist you can create the logic:
    o Rating is > 3 stars, AND
o Last Played is Not In the Last 30 Days, AND
    o Genre is Rock, OR
    o Genre is Blues
Previously this would take three playlists (one for each genre, plus one to combine them). Very, very cool!

    Agreed !!
This is one of the best feature of iTunes 9 yet no one talks about it.
    Thanks Apple
    Cheers

  • ITunes playlists crashing iTunes

I have a couple of iTunes playlists which, when I click on them, crash iTunes. I've tried re-installing iTunes and re-intsalling my user>music>iTunes>iTunes library from my back-up but the problem persists. I've set up the playlists again (under new names) and they work fine. But I want to get rid of the dodgy playlists. I can't do this within iTunes itself because the moment I click on them the app crashes. Any ideas as to where the playlists are kept and how I can delete them?

Playlists are stored in the iTunes Library file which contains everything textual about your iTunes collection. That file can't be edited. It has a sister file called iTunes Library.xml which can be edited. This sister file contains most of the data that is in your main library, but I know there are some omissions (just can't remember what - probably minor stuff for me such as ratings).
So, unless somebody has a better idea, you could open a copy of the xml file and see if you can spot the offending playlists and remove them, or maybe even see where the library is corrupted. Then start iTunes with the option key held down and create a new library. This will be blank but you can then import the xml file that you just edited into this library and basically re--create your old library, minus a few details.
I suppose if you have a backup of your library from before this happened you could use that, but of course if you have done major changes then you'll lose those. Some people do not back up their files, but iTunes will make an archive of your library every time you upgrade iTunes. If you have done that recently you can start up from the old file (hold option key down while starting iTunes).

  • Can't i modify my smart playlists in iTunes

Suddenly I am not able to modify the settings for any of my Smart Playlists.  I am able to get to the update mode (command+i) however if I modify the smart parameters it does not save or change the results of the settings.
    Any help out there?

Wow- I just realized that the smartlists finally updated with the new settings.  It appears it's iCloud and Music Match that has to run before the settings are finalized.  It took over 5 minutes.
