Smart playlists - genre and rating, two questions

I can't figure out a way to create a smart playlist that includes Rock and Alternative songs but only Rock and Alternative songs rated 4 or 5 stars. I can easily create a playlist that includes one genre and is limited to a star rating and I know I can create the list I want by first limiting my playlist to 4 or 5 stars and then subtracting genres but my library includes 51 Genres!
Actually, I might be willing to create a playlist by subtracting 49 genres if I could then duplicate the list so I can create the second playlist I want; 4 and 5 star World and Latino songs. So, question #2 is, is there any way to duplicate a playlist?
TIA,
Peter

Oh, you got it!!! I'd never noticed "Playlist" as a parameter in the smart playlists! Suddenly all kinds of possibilities open up! It did work the way you suggested but I decided to take a different tack. I created a 4-5 star "rock" playlist and a 4-5 star "alternative" playlist and then created a third smart playlist that includes the first two playlists! Now I can just continue creating smart playlists that include only songs I rate 4-5 stars in all of my 51 genres and create composite playlists to my heart's content! OK, I wouldn't do that. Once I get over 25 genres, it'd be easier to go back to the subtraction method. ; )
Thanks for your help Diane! You're brilliant!

  • Smart Playlists using My Rating

I'm currently using v6.03, but this problem has happened with earlier versions as well: stars do not appear when composing a Smart Playlist using My Rating. Different Google searches, etc. have led me to experiment and discover that clicking in the stars box(es) does actually select them, even if they are invisible.
I just updated iTunes to 6.03 this morning and I noticed that the stars did appear in the Smart playlist dialog then, but now they do not.
Does anyone have a remedy for this situation?
    Thanks.

It's not an iTunes problem. Update your video driver and/or DirectX to the latest versions. This usually fixes it.
While you're at it, you should go to Windows Update and install all available updates. It's amazing the number of problems this solves.

  • Front Row not wotking correctly with iTunes smart playlist based on rating

    Hello!
I’m a new Mac user and I love the integration between Front Row and iTunes, but I’ve found an annoying bug.
In iTunes I have a smart playlist based on rating, something similar to Top Rated playlist, which works great in iTunes itself and on my iPhone and iPod. The problem is that when I play it in Front Row it adds at the bottom whatever song from my library. Anyone knows how to fix it?? Afterwards the whole thing would be perfect!
Both iTunes and FR are updated to the latest version.
    Many thanks in advance

  • Smart playlists, grouping, and podcasts question

Hi I listed to a lot of podcasts, and have them grouped using "Grouping" feature like Home, Money, Health, etc. I then have a smart playlists that have the following settings:
Podcast is yes, playcount is 0, and grouping is 'Home' (or money or whatever)
The problem I am having is when new podcasts are downloaded, they DO NOT inherit the grouping setting for that podcast!
So every day, I have to go to each podcast, and reset the grouping to Home (or whatever it is) -
How I permanently set the grouping for each episode to have the correct grouping?
    Thanks in advance,

  • New Smart Playlist / Genre = / Genre does not display in Info list

I'd greatly appreciate help.. spent many hours looking for answer already.
I have created several Smart Playlists in the past. They work fine. They are all classified by Genre.
Now I have created a new Smart Playlist. It all looks fine with the Genre set correctly.
However in Music, when I try to set the Info of a recording to that Genre, the Genre does NOT appear in the Info list.
All previously created Genres are there, but the Genre for the new Smart Playlist is never there.
I have tried over and over and over again. I have deleted the new Smart Playlist, re-created it, created another Smart Playlist, with anonther name ... exited iTunes and re-started it several times ... rebooted the computer ...
Whatever I do, the Genre of the new Smart Playlist does not appear in the Info list.
Any ideas at all? Is there a limit to the number of Genres? I must say I'd love to get rid of a large number of the pre-existing Genres like 'Industrial', Hip Hop/Rap, whatever, that will definitely never be used!
    Many thanks

    Camoracer,
...If the genre is not listed in the drop down then type > it in yourself when editing track info.
Thank you VERY much. I am not a very regular user of iTunes and had forgotten that the first time a new Genre is created, you have to physically type in the name in the Info field .. even though there is a new Smart Playlist with that Genre already defined!
Ah well... one of these days when I get some time I'll have to write up an aide memoire for using iTunes! In the meantime I'll not forget this one! Thanks again, I appreciate your time.

  • Smart Playlists broken and totally unstable

I am not able to create a new smart playlist in iTunes 11. Is anyone else. Now I did subscribe (stupidly) to iTunes Match just after upgrading so that could be part of my problem, but I doubt it. Can anyone else create a new smart playlist in iTunes 11.

    I see this same glitch
I tried creating a new smart playlist based on genre
and I can not get the Smart Playlist to populate-  zero, zip, nada, nothing.  Hmmm?
    iTunes 11.0.2
So what I had to do, was delete the smart playlist.
Select all my music from the main library, then
create again my new smart playlist- (control click) to  edit rules.
    Now it populated as expected.

Some games will let you play music, but if the game has sound effects it will likely turn off the "background" music from the iPad - even if you turn the sound in the game off. I seem to recall at least one game that gave me the option to play music from my iTunes library, but can't remember what it was.

  • Another question about smart playlists

    Hi,
I have been experimenting a lot with smart playlists lately and have 3 now that I have set up with help from this forum so far. However, I have a question I don't see an obvious answer to. That is, I have every song in at least one playlist, and some songs are in multiple playlists. I can add a playlist to a rule, but how can I tell ITunes to create a playlist containing songs that are in more than one playlist? For example, I want ITunes to create a playlist from songs that are in more than one of the following playlists, top 25 most played, purchased, and tagged. How can I set up ITunes to do this?

The checkmark on the right side when you're editing smart playlists adds more rules. Make as many rules as there are playlist that you're looking into and make each rule say "playlist _is_ (fill in the playlist from the dropdown." If you want songs that appear in ALL the selected playlists you select match ALL of the rules at the top. If you want songs that appear in any of the playlists you've selected you have to select match ANY rule at the top. If you have three playlists and you're looking for any songs that appear on any two of the playlists, but they don't necessarily have to appear on all three, then unfortunately there's no way to do that with one smart playlist. You'd have to make a smart playlist with one saying playlist top 25 most played+purchased (match ALL) another saying with playlist top 25 most played+tagged (match ALL), another saying playlists purchased+tagged(match ALL). Then you could make a 4th smart playlists saying to add the other three playlists and you'd end up with one playlist that has only songs that appear in ANY of the other three.
Note: there's an option that appears to make subrules as if you could do the above all in one playlist but unfortunately these don't actually work the way they appear they should in my experience.

  • IOS8 and Smart Playlist Handling

Smart Playlist syncing with iPhone IOS8 hasn't solved the problem.
The trick I have used on the previous IOS versions was to uncheck the "live update"
on the ITunes on my Mac.  Doing that all my playlists showed up on the iPhone regardless
    the ratings for the songs.
I was hoping IOS 8 would have solved the problem but I have tried it yesterday, again
smart playlists checked with "live update" will not sync the playlist to iPhone, you only
see the playlist title with empty songs, as soon as I have unchecked the "live update"
    everything works.
    Any comments pls

I don't know if this helps, but I had a similar problem where certain playlists would not sync. I tried restarting and updating. I also tried un-syncing ALL the music and re-syncing. That didn't work either. The only thing that worked was deleting the playlist in question (it was a smart playlist), syncing, and then re-creating the smart playlist and re-syncing. Then that playlist magically appeared again. Hope that helps.

  • Help creating a smart playlist - all video from one group and fill to size

I have two classifications of videos:
    A) current videos added randomly to iTunes
    B) old videos I'm trying to work through in chronological order but are less important than 'A'
I have a 8GB Touch so space is limited. I always have 2500 MB available for videos.
It was easy enough to separate the two classes of videos into two smart playlists, A and B.
Now I need your help to create a third Smart playlist that contains everything from A , then fills whatever is left of the 2500 MB with videos from B.
Or, if playlists aren't an option, do you have any other ideas?
    Thanks

The new tools in iTunes 9 made this possible, at least good enough.

  • Smart Playlists, Last Played, and Playcounts (and some other stuff)

Well, so here's my contribution to piling on with iTunes Match annoyances...
    * Artwork doesn't show up during playback on iPhone until I tap <- button and then tap on Now Playing > button.
    * Not Played in a year smart playlist shows 3x more songs than the source computer's iTunes library shows.  I consider the source computer that synched its library to iCloud to be authoritative.
    * Furthermore, the Not Played in a Year smart playlist on iPhone doesn't match what is on my iPad.  300 additional songs on the iPad.
    * Repeated attempts to copy 4 songs up to iCloud fail, even though they should've been added.  Can other devices see them?  Yes, but they're grayed out because the track isn't copied into the cloud.
    * Battery is getting chewed through on my iPhone 4.  I haven't tracked it too closely, but it does seem like there's something consuming more power, and I can feel that the phone is warmer to the touch.
    * Playcounts are not updated when I listen to songs on iOS or even Mac OS X-based devices.  This is an absolute dealbreaker for me.  While it's great to get song upgrades, I can't use iTunes Match as part of my "playflow" until playcounts and smartplaylists that incorporate last played criteria are fully supported.
It's just sooo close to being great, but without Smart Playlist support and support for playcounts, there's no point for me.  I have to revert to no iTunes Match on my iOS devices for now.
C'mon Apple, get this stuff fixed.  PLEASE!

Well, the good news is that I sent these list of problems to someone a little bit higher up at Apple and was very pleasantly surprised to get a call from one of the support guys within the iTunes store today.
We went over the smart playlists issue and I've hopefully given him enough detail to help him reproduce the problem internally.  He's going to look to get that issue reported to the iOS team.  Regardless, I think Apple knows there's work that needs to be done to fix some of these bugs/oddness we're all seeing with Match.

  • Smart Playlists not updating

Yesterday I added two new songs to my library. One of them should have gone into Smart Playlist "A," one of them into Smart Playlist "B," and both of them into Smart Playlist "C."
For reasons that I am unable to understand (after reviewing the conditions of all three playlists), both songs went into Smart Playlist "C," but neither "A" nor "B" was updated with new music.
I was running iTunes for Mac 5.0.1, and in desperation I decided to check Software Update for a new version of iTunes. I took version 6, but it didn't help. (I guess it was silly of me to think that a new major version would fix this problem; I wasn't thinking about the new video iPod!)
Any thoughts? Has anyone else experienced similar problems?

Yep, the Live Updating checkbox is selected for all three of these playlists.
Here's more detail, which I didn't include for fear of boring everyone to death:
Song 1 is The Proclaimers, "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)," no genre (I removed it thinking it could be interfering with the Smart Playlist), date 1988, my rating 5 stars.
Song 2 is The Dandy Warhols, "Bohemian Like You," genre also removed, date 2000, my rating 5 stars.
Playlist A is "1980s Music" with the following conditions:
    - Year is in the range 1980 to 1989.
    - My Rating is greater than 3 stars.
    - Genre is not "Books & Spoken."
    - Genre is not "Classical."
Playlist B is "2000s Music" with the same conditions as playlist A, except:
    - Year is in the range 2000 to 2009.
Playlist C is "My Top Rated" with the following conditions:
    - My Rating is greater than 4 stars.
    - Genre is not "Classical."
In all three playlists, the top checkbox is set to Match all of the following rules, and neither the "Limit to xx songs..." nor the "Match only checked songs" checkbox is selected.
Song 1 fits the conditions for playlists A and C, while song 2 fits the conditions for playlists B and C. But only playlist C has been updated with these songs.
Ideas? I'm grateful for any help.
    Best,
    Tim

  • Some smart playlists empty.

I have been happily using an old iPod Touch as my car's music source.  I've had playlists defined that have been working fine on the Touch.  The playlists are somewhat complex, like
    Match all:
    Rating is greater than ...
    Media Kind is ..
    Genre contains ...
    any
Last Played is not in the last ...
Last Skipped is not int the last ...
Date Added is in the last ...
    (live updating)
I recently updated the iOS on my Touch (the old version was old) and now some of these smart lists are empty on the iPod.  In iTunes, the lists are full of songs, as they always have been.  I've reset the iPod, resynced.  Nothing seems to help.  Has there been some change in the newest iOS versions that limit the capability of older Touches when it comes to complex smartlists?
Mac OS is 10.6.7, Touch iOS is 3.1.3

Could there be a limit on the number of songs for a smart list, beyond which the list displays nothing?  I have a number of smart playlists that use the rules above, for Jazz, Pop, Rock and others.  It's the two Rock lists that stay empry (one for ratings above 3 stars, the other for ratings above 2), the others work as they should.  The only differences between any of these is the number of stars and the genre.  For genre, I used "Rock", same as the genre in "get info" for any of my rock music.
Like I said earlier, iTunes does display all the music in every one of my smart playlists.  And my iPod Touch did the same thing until I updated the iOS yesterday.
    It's a mystery!

  • Smart playlist not selecting, includes entire library

The iTunes smart playlists I created are no longer working at all -- they both sweep in the entire iTunes library, ignoring the conditions I have specified to be matched. These smart playlists are structured mainly around song-type descriptions I have inputted into the "grouping" field (not the "genre" field that is filled in automatically). So, for example, say one playlist is set up (as "match any") to include songs with classic rock, alt-rock or punk in the "grouping" field. And yet, no matter what I do, the entire library ends up in there, including songs that have different designators, or none at all, in the "grouping" field. Needless to say, this is leading to some odd and unfortunate segues and making the playlists useless.
I've tried deleting the smart playlists and setting them up again -- no help. These smart playlists used to work just fine; this problem developed at some point in the last year or so. I'm using iTunes version 10.5.0.142 for PC.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

I have searched through numerous technical support issues and there seems to be a ton of "work arounds" but no solution. I have several iDevices and the latest udpates and software for all components. The issue of live updating a smart playlist now seems to be isolated only to my iPhone 5.  I have my top rated smart playlist set to rating is 5 stars, last played is not in the last 1 month, media kind is music and playlist is music and of course, LIVE UPDATING is checked.
On 3 different iPads and an iPod touch, when I play a song, it is immediately removed from the playlist.  Only on the iPhone does it not remove it automatically.  If I sync, then it is all fixed, but that seems like delayed updating, not live, unless the live updating option is limited to iTunes, but then why does it work on iPads and iPod touches?
The bottom line is that all of the restarting the phone, checking and unchecking, recreating, et al, does not work. It is a bug - plane and simple.
I would challenge anyone to create a similar playlist and sync it to an iPhone 5 and simply play a song and tell us if it is removed from the playlist.  If you figure out a fix, then post and it with as much information about what is different as possible for a solution.
I would be that if Jobs were still alive he would never have allowed this bug to get out!

  • Can't rename smart playlist.

So, I want to make a "top 25 most played" playlist using the smart playlist. For some reason, I couldn't rename the name of that playlist. I tried moving it from one folder to another, I tried to sync and sync, I tried to change the conditions (or whatever it's called) and still no good. The name of the playlist is still "playlist".
There's also that thing where for some reason the number of plays isn't updating properly. No matter how many times I play a song in my iPod, in my PC the number'd stay the same.
I'm beginning to think there's something wrong with the update and syncing, uhm, I don't know. I can still put songs in so at least that's something. Help?

    unhappypeople wrote:
I can still put songs in so at least that's something.
Are you sure this is a Smart Playlist, because the only two ways to add songs to a Smart Playlist are to change the rules of the Playlist or change the attributes of the song so that it then conforms to the rules of the Playlist? You cannot place songs into a Smart Playlist by dragging etc.
To rename a Playlist, Smart or Regular, simply click twice on the text of Playlist name, once to highlight it and the second time to get into edit mode. On the second click, the name will become boxed and highlighted in blue. You then type in the new name and click on the enter button on your keyboard. Look at the screenshots below and notice the difference between them:
    and
Notice also, the icon to the left of the Playlist name, the "gear" icon. That's a Smart Playlist. The screenshot below shows the different icons:
You cannot add songs directly to a Playlist Folder.
For the number of Plays to be correctly updated the following is required:
You have to use Sync to manage the iPod with iTunes. The Play Count will not increase if you use Manually Manage.
The song must be played to the end of the time of the "song file". For example, if the music finishes at 3 minutes 04 seconds, but the "song" continues (silently or fades out) until 3 minutes 07 seconds, you must let the iPod play through to 3 minutes 07 seconds. If you stop the song playing, or stop it by moving to another song at any time before "it" finishes, the Play Count will not increase.
    Also;
With a Regular Playlist, you can drag songs into the list and move them out again yourself. You can also use the Delete command to remove a song from a Regular Playlist while still leaving it in your Library.
With a Smart Playlist, set to be a "Top 25 Most Played", the Playlist will update itself as one song achieves a higher Play Count than a song currently in the list. So if a song is played fully in iTunes, the Play Count will increase by 1. If the song is played on your iPod, when you next Sync the iPod to iTunes, the Play Count will increase by 1. You cannot "delete" a song from a Smart Playlist.
A Smart Playlist, set to include the top 25 most played songs, may have more than 25 songs unless you set the rule to limit the list to 25.
