Smart playlists, grouping, and podcasts question

Hi I listed to a lot of podcasts, and have them grouped using "Grouping" feature like Home, Money, Health, etc. I then have a smart playlists that have the following settings:
Podcast is yes, playcount is 0, and grouping is 'Home' (or money or whatever)
The problem I am having is when new podcasts are downloaded, they DO NOT inherit the grouping setting for that podcast!
So every day, I have to go to each podcast, and reset the grouping to Home (or whatever it is) -
How I permanently set the grouping for each episode to have the correct grouping?
Thanks in advance,
Ndimitru

Oh, you got it!!! I'd never noticed "Playlist" as a parameter in the smart playlists! Suddenly all kinds of possibilities open up! It did work the way you suggested but I decided to take a different tack. I created a 4-5 star "rock" playlist and a 4-5 star "alternative" playlist and then created a third smart playlist that includes the first two playlists! Now I can just continue creating smart playlists that include only songs I rate 4-5 stars in all of my 51 genres and create composite playlists to my heart's content! OK, I wouldn't do that. Once I get over 25 genres, it'd be easier to go back to the subtraction method. ; )
Thanks for your help Diane! You're brilliant!

Can one create a smart playlist for multiple podcasts and to play one after the other on your iPod? I want to combine podcasts of the same topic in a smart playlist. When I tried to do this I chose smart playlist, album starts with, and then did it again for each podcast I wanted. That didn't work. If it can be done how do you do it?
I have a fifth generation iPod which is always updated to the latest as well as the itunes.

Say for example I want to put different car related podcasts in one smart playlist. Car related podcasts such as Wall Street Journal Car Cast and NPR Car Talk. Can it be done and if so how?

  • Removed from iTunes 10? Smart Playlist of all podcasts

    Hi all,
I was able to create a smart playlist of all podcasts in iTunes 9, however I don't see the option in iTunes 10.
Basically I'd like all my podcasts to add automatically to a smart playlist.
See "Get smart playlists" here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/
I hope this feature wasn't killed, it's really handy for those of us with shuffles.
    Thanks,

Nope, its a reference to a great blues-rock song performed by The Jeff Beck Group (w/ Rod Stewart on vocals) circa 1967 from the album "Truth".

  • Smart playlists - genre and rating, two questions

I can't figure out a way to create a smart playlist that includes Rock and Alternative songs but only Rock and Alternative songs rated 4 or 5 stars. I can easily create a playlist that includes one genre and is limited to a star rating and I know I can create the list I want by first limiting my playlist to 4 or 5 stars and then subtracting genres but my library includes 51 Genres!
Actually, I might be willing to create a playlist by subtracting 49 genres if I could then duplicate the list so I can create the second playlist I want; 4 and 5 star World and Latino songs. So, question #2 is, is there any way to duplicate a playlist?
    TIA,
    Peter

  • Smart playlists with video podcasts

I have a smart playlist on my iPod with one rule:
    Video Kind is Movie
When I play videos from this list I hear the audio, but the video is frozen on a frame.
All videos work fine when played from the main Videos menu.
Is anybody able to play video podcasts from smart playlists ?

Yup, I can confirm. The whole Video Kind rule doesn't seem to work. I did report it but more voices couldn't hurt.

  • Smart Playlists broken and totally unstable

I am not able to create a new smart playlist in iTunes 11. Is anyone else. Now I did subscribe (stupidly) to iTunes Match just after upgrading so that could be part of my problem, but I doubt it. Can anyone else create a new smart playlist in iTunes 11.

    I see this same glitch
I tried creating a new smart playlist based on genre
and I can not get the Smart Playlist to populate-  zero, zip, nada, nothing.  Hmmm?
    iTunes 11.0.2
So what I had to do, was delete the smart playlist.
Select all my music from the main library, then
create again my new smart playlist- (control click) to  edit rules.
    Now it populated as expected.

  • ASR - IPSEC, GRE, channel group, and MTU Questions

I have an ASR1004 and am trying to load-balance a 1.5G data rate over two 1-Gig ports using IPSEC ports, but I have a few questions.
    1. Can GRE support a 9K mtu
    2. Can you run IPSEC on a channel-group
    3. Can the ASR load-balance per- S&D on a channel-group?
I currently have two separate tunnels, one on each outbound gig link with OSPF running. However, I can't get a 7000 mtu w/ the DF bit set through to the distant end. I am guessing this is because of the GRE interface.
So is it possible to run IPSEC on a channel-group and have this load balance per S&D? I need to use the BW of both ports.
    Thanks for the help!

The ASR1004 router we can only send packets with a maximum MTU size of 1438 Bytes over the encrypted tunnel.

  • Playlist problem and related question

    Hi,
Is it possible to create a playlist that contain all the songs that are located in a specific folder?
    What I did:
Then iTune said that it was adding the songs but when it finished, the playlist was empty.
Is something wrong with the installation or you cannot do that with iTune?
Also, is it possible to browse songs by which folder they are in? I know that you can brose per genre, artist and album but I'd really like to be able to browse by folder.
    Thanks!

I'm not sure how your music folders are set up, but I've chosen for iTunes to manage my music and sort it automatically, in which case iTunes creates a folder for every artist. One way you may be able to find the music in one group would be sure to add the folder again, and then sort your music by the date added category, if you used the Add Folder feature, in which case all the songs from your folder will have been added at the same time, and will be displayed in a batch. The Date Added category is under View>View Options or the shortkey Ctrl-J.

  • IPhoto and Podcast questions

    Hello,
Just got my brand new MacBook Pro, its a real screamer. I like it.
I transferred all my docs and apps from my PowerBook G4 using a firewire cable. No problem, after 90 minutes everything was there. Nice.
However, I have a couple of problems. When I update my iPod w/video 60GB in the MacBook Pro, iTunes tells me: "Podcasts on the iPod 'xxx' cannot be updated because all of the podcasts selected for updating no longer exist." I can access and update my subscribed podcasts via iTunes Ok, so I don't know what is going on.
The second issue is that in iPhoto I cannot drag and drop a photo from my library directly to the desktop. Before, with my PowerBook G4, when I dragged a pic a green plus sign showed up and when released on the desktop, the pic copied automatically there. This doesn't happen with my MacBook Pro. Is there a setting somewhere for this?
Thanks for any help in advance.

  • Nano 2nd generation and podcasts question

I am using the latest version of iTunes with Windows XP. When my nano 2nd gen is connected, I am unable to drag and drop podcasts from my library into the nano.
When I drag and drop a podcast, it "appears" to be copying, however it does not copy over to the device. Any ideas?

    thealexness wrote:
i don't believe iPod nanos can play podcasts because technically they are "videos"
This is incorrect. Some podcasts are videos and some are just audio (usually mp3). The first and second generation Nanos can play audio podcasts just like any iPod and like most mp3 players. Third generation iPods should be able to play most video podcasts. However, despite the name "podcast", not all video podcasts work on iPods. The video has to be correctly formated.

  • Smart playlist and podcasts

I have a 160gb iPod classic. I would like to listen to my podcasts like I do my music, one right after another. I made a smart playlist for my podcasts, right clicked it to copy to play order and synced my iPod. The smart playlist is in iTunes, nowhere to be found on my iPod.
    Anybody have any suggestions?

@woodp Interesting approach. I guess I never noticed a Podcasts Smart Playlist as you describe it.
In my testing when I had the Automatically include option selected, none of the selected playlists from the Include Episodes from Playlists section synced, while all of the episodes from the Automatically include option did. It may be that the rules of your Netcast Smart Playlist were transferred and your iPod is evaluating those rules on the content that was transferred from the Automatically include option.
As I've always seen it, Smart Playlists provide much more control over the content that I sync with my iPod. First I have way more podcast episodes than will fit on my iPod, or any iPod available. There are some combinations available from the Automatically include, but not enough for my tastes.
As an example, I want the most recently added unplayed episodes for some podcasts, like news podcasts. At the same time I want the least recently unplayed episodes of other podcasts, like audio dramas I'm trying to catch up on. Some times I want a playlist of episodes 5 minutes long or less when I'm likely to be interrupted. Smart Playlists allow me to include all of these, and manage the space they take up on my iPod with greater control than previously available from the Podcasts tab of my iPod.
To get around the limitations of the Podcasts tab in iTunes 8, I like most of the people posting here created playlists and synced them through the Music tab. Apple has taken care of this work around and now I manage Music from the Music tab and Podcasts from the Podcasts tab.
I guess the thing that would have made this transition less frustrating would have been if they had taken a couple extra minutes during the demonstration of iTunes 9.0 at the Keynote to show how podcast syncing was improved. Still Steve Jobs did say the day was going to be about Music, and it was.

  • Help creating a smart playlist - all video from one group and fill to size

I have two classifications of videos:
    A) current videos added randomly to iTunes
    B) old videos I'm trying to work through in chronological order but are less important than 'A'
I have a 8GB Touch so space is limited. I always have 2500 MB available for videos.
It was easy enough to separate the two classes of videos into two smart playlists, A and B.
Now I need your help to create a third Smart playlist that contains everything from A , then fills whatever is left of the 2500 MB with videos from B.
Or, if playlists aren't an option, do you have any other ideas?
    Thanks

The new tools in iTunes 9 made this possible, at least good enough.

  • Auto-removing played podcasts from a smart playlist

I'm wondering if anyone can help me figure out a way to do this. I have two smart playlists for podcasts. The first contains my favourite podcasts and they are removed from the playlist once they've finished playing. This works and I accomplished it like this (using two smart playlists):
Smart Playlist 1 - Favourite Podcasts Helper
    - Album is "Podcast A"
    OR
    - Album is "Podcast B"
    OR
    - Album is "Podcast C"
    etc
Smart Playlist 2 - Favourite Podcasts
    - Playlist is "Favourite Podcasts Helper"
    AND
    - Playcount is 0
As I say, it works great. It's annoying to have to have an extra playlist in there (necessary because you can't mix AND with OR conditions in a single smart playlist) but I prefix it with a "z" and it drops out of sight to the bottom.
Now, here's the problem. I want a playlist for all the other podcasts that DON'T appear in my favourites list and which ALSO removes played podcasts. I don't want to name them all because I don't want to have to remember to add each new podcast to the list because there are a lot of them and I always forget to add them when I load a new podcast onto the iPod.
    I tried to do this:
Playlist 3 - All Other Podcasts
    - Podcast is true
    AND
    - Playlist is not "Favourite Podcasts"
    AND
    - Playcount is 0
It works in so far as it collects all the right podcasts but it won't update, leaving played podcasts in the list. It WILL update if I remove the "Podcast is true" condition but that makes it useless. I tried splitting it up as in my Favourites playlist, moving the "Podcast is true" condition out into it's own playlist but that doesn't help. It seems that as long as a "Podcast" condition is in the chain somewhere, it stops it from updating.
Maybe this is a bug that will get squashed in the next firmware update. Until then does anyone have an idea of how to make it work without listing every single podcast album?

    I had previously tried
    Smart Playlist - all podcasts
    . podcast is true
    Smart Playlist - unheard podcasts
    . playcount is 0
    AND
    . playlist is all podcasts
And that didn't work, I guess because the first playlist won't update. After reading your post I thought that it ought to work the other way around if the playcount is being analysed first:
    Smart Playlist - anything unheard
. playcount is 0 (this works fine)
    Smart Playlist - unheard podcasts
    . playlist is anything unheard
But that won't work either. While the first playlist updates fine, the second one never updates and continues to display content that no longer appears in the playlist it is built on. Frustrating. I'm sure there must be a shortcut that hasn't occurred to me yet.

  • IOS8 and Smart Playlist Handling

Smart Playlist syncing with iPhone IOS8 hasn't solved the problem.
The trick I have used on the previous IOS versions was to uncheck the "live update"
on the ITunes on my Mac.  Doing that all my playlists showed up on the iPhone regardless
    the ratings for the songs.
I was hoping IOS 8 would have solved the problem but I have tried it yesterday, again
smart playlists checked with "live update" will not sync the playlist to iPhone, you only
see the playlist title with empty songs, as soon as I have unchecked the "live update"
    everything works.
    Any comments pls

I don't know if this helps, but I had a similar problem where certain playlists would not sync. I tried restarting and updating. I also tried un-syncing ALL the music and re-syncing. That didn't work either. The only thing that worked was deleting the playlist in question (it was a smart playlist), syncing, and then re-creating the smart playlist and re-syncing. Then that playlist magically appeared again. Hope that helps.

  • Trying to get Podcasts into a smart Playlist on my phone

I just bought Beautiful Clock Radio from the app store, (a great app) and was hoping to get it to play podcasts.
I emailded there support and they said "make a smart playlist for the podcast you want to listen to and sync that with your device". So i did. The problem is the playlist on my computer has the podcast in it and works fine but when i sync it with my iphone the playlist is empty? What the heck is wrong?
    Thanks, Mark
