Smart Playlists limits me to 267 songs?

Hi,
Total newb here...I have 1000 or so songs on my iPod and I am trying to create a smart playlist called "80's Music" that will add any song from 1980 to 1989. problem is that it will only put a limit of 267 songs into this playlist. How do I get it to put all of them in there? There are at least 800 80's songs on the iPod...I know how to tell it that I want the years specified.
Any help much appreciated!
Steve

Try this:

If you've already tried that and its still only putting 267 songs in the list, then you might want to check some songs that AREN'T in the list that SHOULD be to see if they have the Year tag set correctly.
Personally, I know I don't have the Year tag set in all my music. In the past I have forgotten to set it and I just haven't gone through it all to change all the albums so they have the Year tags set ...

  • Smart Playlists - limiting by My Rating of songs

OK - this is probably a really simple question but it's really frustrating me.
I'm trying to create a smart playlist by limiting songs that have a certain rating. Sounds simple enough.
However, in the options box when you select My Rating as the criteria, I can't type anything in the box next to it to say what rating you want to limit it by - if you see what I mean. Any suggestions.

You don't type in the box; you click in the box to enable how many stars you want. Give that a try and see if that works for you.

  • Is there a way to combine two Smart Playlists without dragging each individual song from one list to the other?

Is ther a way to Combine two Smart Playlists without dragging and dropping each song into the other Smart Playlist?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

With the timeline selected, go to File/Export/Movie and export each as a DV-AVI video.
You can then combine those AVIs into a new project with virtually no loss of quality.

  • Smart Playlist: Limitation or broken iPod?

I have been struggling mightily trying to get my Smart Playlists to sync properly between iTunes and my iPod. One particular playlist that has been a major problem is one with two filters, the first filter is for purchases, and the second filter is for songs played less than 10 times. In iTunes, this Smart Playlist works just as I would expect, with all of the songs filtered out that have 10 or more plays. However, on my iPod, the second filter is completely ignored, and only purchased songs will show up.
Oddly, when I sync iTune with my iPod, for the flash of second, the filters work, but then, it reverts back to only honoring the first of the two filters.
So, the question is: is Plays not a filter that will work on an iPod, and this is expected, or my iPod not working properly with regard to Smart Playlists?
    Thanks,
    Ryan B
Update: The Playlist works on iPod when Live Updating is unselected. Does not work correctly when Live Updating is selected.

hmm, I thought I was only seeing a porblem with my ipod shuffle on my Mac - starting with itunes 8.1 and hte 3rd gen shuffle, I have to sync my 1st en shuffle twice to even get stuff onto it, sometimes. And of course since it has no clock, everything syncs back with the time I am syncing it, not the time it was actually played.
camoracer may be onto something. I just played a song from a smart playlist on my 5th gen clickwheel ipod, and it didn't sync back OK.
edit - correction, I played it from an On-The-Go playlist. The On-The-Go playlists got synced back, but not the track playcount.
I DO use a complicated playlists on my 2nd gen nano and it syncs the playcounts OK.
I wonder if it has anything to do with the iPod model?

  • Smart Playlists not showing the correct songs on iPhone 4

I created a "Smart Playlist" called "100 Newest" which takes the 100 newest songs added to my music list on iTunes.  It displays perfectly on iTunes on my computer but when I sync my iPhone4 to my iTunes, it syncs the regular playlists I create to my phone just fine.  But the "smart playlists" added to my iPhone show up with the correct title, but when I view the playlist on my iPhone, it shows all the songs in my Library under that playlist.  It will NOT show the 100 Newest songs like it shows on my playlist when viewed in iTunes on my iMac.  Grrrrrr!  Does anyone know how to fix this annoying problem.  It's one problem after another I'm dealing with in terms of these playlists to appear and play prooperly on iPhone ios 5.0.x.

    What type of email?

  • Smart Playlist does not play new songs.  Any clue?

I created a Smart Playlist that referes to another Smart Playlist.  This other playlist selects randomly songs that were last played before a certain date.  (So if a song from that playlist is played, it is automatically replaced by another one).  The newly added songs do not seem to be played at all.  I need to restart iTunes to do so.  Any clue?

In principal, putting a Smart Playlist into another Smart Playlist will work. However, if the rules of the Playlists are conflicting, that may be why you have an issue. First of all, can we be clear on exactly which Playlists are doing what?
Are you saying that songs recently added to your iTunes Library are:
    not in the first Playlist,
not in the second Playlist but are in the first one, or
that they are in the second list, but simply don't play.
or that songs, newly added to the second Playlist are there, but don't get played? In this case, how many songs are in the list?
    Can you take screenshots of the two playlists, or list them here. In this screenshot for example;
...this Playtlist refers to five other Smart Playlists. The resulting Playlist is usually over 300 songs. So I don't always know if a song in the list ever gets played, simply because there are so many. I do know however, that the list plays a random selection of my songs and gets updated successfully when I sync the iPod with iTunes.
If you list the Playlists here (rather than screenshot them), can you also mention the top left tick-box section; "match any/all of the following rules". It changes according to the fields below it.

  • Smart Playlist JUST for 'Free Songs of the Week?'

I would like to create a Smart playlist comprising exclusively the 'Free Songs of the Week' from the iTunes Store. So when I get the weekly 'Free Song,' it goes right into that list. But I need some sort of 'unique identifier' that allows this to happen, and I can't seem to find one. I go under all the 'View Options' and nothing seems to 'tag' these songs as unique, so I can't set up a Smart Playlist that includes just those songs.
Is there a way to do this?

The iTunes Store doesn't tag the free tracks any differently from any other track that I can see, so I can think of no automatic way to put just the free tracks into a playlist. You could, though, put "free" or something similar in the Comments section when you download one of the free items, and then have a Smart Playlist that looked for "free" in the Comments. That's the only way I can think of to accomplish what you want. That wouldn't be any easier than just dragging the free tracks to a normal playlist, but would allow you to have future Smart Playlists that process the free tracks.
    Hope this helps.

  • Sync "smart playlist" without song-titles?

Is it possible to synchronize only a smart playlist without all the song-titles what are included?
A example; In i Tunes i have a very large song library on my mac. Then i have synchronized some titles, with "Check Selection" mode. Now i have a "Smart Playlist" on i-tunes, that includes only song-titles, that i haven't "rated" before. Now, is it possible to import/sync only the "Smart-Playlist" without all the song-titles that are included on Itunes?
So i want only have the smart-playlist on my ipod-touch, to hear the unrated songs, that are already synced.
Other example, i have a smart playlist that includes only the song-titles, rated from 1 till 3 stars. Now i want that smart playlist on the iPod, to hear only the songs, rated from 1 till 3 stars, i already synced on the IPod.
Problem is this..: When i sinc a smart-list like that, the memory on my IPod is prompt overloaded...
I hope you understand what i mean, and would be great to have a solution for that...

  • Only Smart Playlists match between iPhone and iTunes for songs purchased on iPhone

I purchase an album on my iPhone.  The music shows up on my iPhone in its Purchased playlist.  I start my computer and the music automatically downloads on my computer and is placed into the Purchased playlist under the iTunes Store on the left panel in iTunes on my computer.  I sync the phone to iTunes in which I have this Purchased playlist selected to sync with my iPhone.  And here's the rub:
From then on, when I plug in my iPhone to sync, it shows up as a device on the left panel of iTunes.  You click on it to show the folders below and, when you click on the phone's Purchased playlist on the computer (left panel under devices), it shows all the new songs I just purchased there in the purchased playlist.  But when you open the actual playlist on the iPhone, some of the songs from the new album are missing from the Playlist on the iPhone.  Again, ALL of the songs still show on the playlist in iTunes and ALL of the songs STILL show on the playlist in iTunes that is under the device iPhone listing in the left panel of iTunes.  So...even iTunes thinks that ALL the songs are still in the Purchased playlist on the iPhone, but when you open the iPhone, some of the songs from the playlist are missing.
I've even tried creating new playlists with different names and dropping all of the new album songs into this different new playlist and syncing this new playlist to the iPhone.  Even then, the same songs are STILL missing on the new synced playlist on the  iPhone.
There is only way that I can make all the songs show up on an iTunes playlist and on the same iPhone playlist.  This only happens if I create and use a Smart Playlist to specifically select those songs.  A Smart playlist always shows the correct songs in both iTunes and the iPhone.  But, again ONLY if it's a Smart Playlist.  If I make any regular playlist and drop the songs into it in iTunes, the playlist shows up on my iPhone but is missing some of the songs.
One other thing...I have no idea how this happens or what is causing it.  Sometimes, one or two of the missing songs will show up hours or days later.  Not sure if it's because I played them on my phone or on my computer iTunes and that caused some flag to trip that then allowed them to show up in the playlist from which they were missing.
Don't tell me to delete all music and resync all music or to manually manage my songs or to restore my phone.  I've done that so many times and it does not work.  I've tried unchecking the songs and rechecking the songs between syncs.  I've tried deleting the songs from all devices and redownloading.  Nothing works.  The only way I've been able to fix this is the delete all content from my phone and do a complete restore and NOT restore from my previous backup (treat my iPhone like a new phone with no backup available).  With 4000 songs and 100+ apps and podcasts, etc...that is WAY too cumbersome and takes to long to do everytime I purchase a song on my iPhone.
Again, this is NO ISSUE with a Smart Playlist...but only a Smart Playlist.  The work around right now is that I have a Smart Playlist that always shows the last 200 songs recently purchased.  That playlist is always accurate on both iTunes and the iPhone.

I checked again last night, and now iTunes matched the phone settings, saying zero space was available. I had nearly 20 gigs of "Other" data :/
So I erased all settings/data on the iPhone and restored from an iCloud backup from last week, and now everything seems fine, with over 15 GB of available space.

  • Possible to exclude double songs in smart playlist?

I made a smart playlist based on a category. However the list contains a lot of times the same song. Is it possible to automatically exclude doubles that will be added by itself during time?
    André

I have about 600 songs that I have put in the genre of "chrismas" I have also rated them. I created a smart playlist in iTunes for 4 stars and up tunes within the christmas genre. From that in iTunes I get about 500 songs in that smart playlist (I like christmas songs). I sync it with the iPod. When I go to that smart playlist I get about 166 songs not the 500 that shows up in my iTunes.
Now I did discover one more thing today. I like to play my playlists in shuffle song mode. That is where I see this problem. Well today I turned that off and.... the 500 songs are shown ( what I mean by this is when a tune is playing you get the message that this is " 1 of 500. Same playlist in shuffle mode I get "1 of 166"

  • I rate a song but it doesnt show in itunes and doesnt update Smart Playlist

I have a problem i cant figure out. I have a smart playlist on my iphone for songs rated 5 stars. When i rate a song 5 stars on my iphone it doesn't update the playlist with it. Whats weird is the very same playlist does update on my wifes iphone without going into itunes to sync. She runs 3.0 nd im on 3.1.
aNy ideas why the rating doesnt update when i do it on the phone and not in itunes?

  • Updating smart playlists

I have set up a smart playlist, which says not to play songs played in the last 7 days, and limits the playlist to 700 songs so that the playlist will always fit on my 4gb nano.
When I've plugged it in over the last couple of days, it says "cannot update not enough free space".
How do I get it to remove songs that don't conform to the smart playlist rules, so that the songs on the ipod rotate regularly?

Which is fine, but is there no way of automating the process?
Then all I should have to do is plug it in after each days listening, and get continually rotating songs, and not listen to the same songs each day.
If not, fair enough, just seems silly.

  • Smart playlist not working

My smart playlists aren't doing jack squat for updating. The live-update checkbox is checked. I tried unchecking it, then going back and checking it again. No luck. I have lots of new songs on my computer that simply are not showing up. And the music isn't random at all. It's not changing. Very frustrating.
I have a smart playlist limiting size (so it fits on my ipod), checked random, and live-updating. Nothing else. But it won't update.
I'd just recreate it every time I want to sync (which I did once hoping to fix the problem), but it's used in a bunch of other playlists too, so that's a huge pain to recreate all those too.
Anyone know how to troubleshoot this? I am lost, and a bit mad at the software (trying hard not to dislike apple right now).

    HappyPants wrote:
Why can't my criteria simply be limit size to 14800MB ...
So I guess checking random just selects random songs, it's not actually a criteria. So really that Should be a criteria....Random. Just that.
I Just want a certain number/size of random songs.
You have to have at least one criteria, which can be something as simple as "Bitrate Is Greater Than 1 kbps" which all your music would meet, then set it to select 14800MB selected at random. iTunes will grab 14800MB worth of songs, selected at random, but the contents won't change unless you include criteria that forces songs out of the playlist to be replaced. Otherwise, the playlist contents will never change. Make sense?
    HappyPants wrote:
In my case I really don't want to use the criteria as you suggest, "last played is not in the last 'x' days" because sometimes I like to hear the same songs over and over again ... I just can't fit all my music on my ipod and wanted the nano for it's size. So the best solution for me is to just have it randomize my songs a bit every time I sync.
Then how is iTunes supposed to differentiate between the songs you like to hear over and over and other songs that it needs to select "at random"?
    HappyPants wrote:
After some thought, I chose to do: last skipped is not in the last 1 day.
That should change quite frequently before putting a song back into the playlist, and it should keep the songs that I like listening to over and over.
    Now you're thinking
I still would like there to just be some way of just limiting the size and having it random though.
You can do this (see my first suggestion in this post). However, what you're asking is for iTunes to somehow know what songs you want to keep on your iPod vs. the songs it is supposed to pick at random.
I would recommend you make a regular playlist (not smart) that holds the songs that you always want on your iPod, then a smart playlist that randomly selects from the rest of your music. In the smart playlist, include the criteria "playlist is not (other playlist name)" so that you don't double up on the same songs.
If you want to manage an iPod that is smaller than your library, I would recommend you spend some time reading an excellent paper on how to do this:

  • Smart playlist not selecting, includes entire library

The iTunes smart playlists I created are no longer working at all -- they both sweep in the entire iTunes library, ignoring the conditions I have specified to be matched. These smart playlists are structured mainly around song-type descriptions I have inputted into the "grouping" field (not the "genre" field that is filled in automatically). So, for example, say one playlist is set up (as "match any") to include songs with classic rock, alt-rock or punk in the "grouping" field. And yet, no matter what I do, the entire library ends up in there, including songs that have different designators, or none at all, in the "grouping" field. Needless to say, this is leading to some odd and unfortunate segues and making the playlists useless.
I've tried deleting the smart playlists and setting them up again -- no help. These smart playlists used to work just fine; this problem developed at some point in the last year or so. I'm using iTunes version 10.5.0.142 for PC.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

I have searched through numerous technical support issues and there seems to be a ton of "work arounds" but no solution. I have several iDevices and the latest udpates and software for all components. The issue of live updating a smart playlist now seems to be isolated only to my iPhone 5.  I have my top rated smart playlist set to rating is 5 stars, last played is not in the last 1 month, media kind is music and playlist is music and of course, LIVE UPDATING is checked.
On 3 different iPads and an iPod touch, when I play a song, it is immediately removed from the playlist.  Only on the iPhone does it not remove it automatically.  If I sync, then it is all fixed, but that seems like delayed updating, not live, unless the live updating option is limited to iTunes, but then why does it work on iPads and iPod touches?
The bottom line is that all of the restarting the phone, checking and unchecking, recreating, et al, does not work. It is a bug - plane and simple.
I would challenge anyone to create a similar playlist and sync it to an iPhone 5 and simply play a song and tell us if it is removed from the playlist.  If you figure out a fix, then post and it with as much information about what is different as possible for a solution.
I would be that if Jobs were still alive he would never have allowed this bug to get out!

  • How do I get my old playlists back?  I seem to have only a bunch of "Smart Playlists" which is kind of stupid because the stuff that itunes populated them with don't even meet the crteria of the list! But that's another story.

Against my better judgement, I updated my Itunes software when I got my wife a new Iphone.  Problem is, instead of my old playlists, I can only view a few "Smart Playlists".  In addition, what songs are in them include a bunch of my daughter's music, which isn't even stored in this computer.  So it would seem that somehow my itunes is screwed up somehow.  Does anybody know how to get rid of this "Smart Playlist" crap and get me in touch with my old library and playlists?
