Smart Playlists: One instance of artist per list?
Hi there,
When I have a smart playlist create a list by my ratings (eg 3+) is there any way I can limit the amount of times an artist is added? I want to try and avoid a playlist dominated by one artist!

Windows doesn't do Applescript, but iTunes for Windows does have a programming interface, which I've used frequently to do various things.
So what the OP wants to do is possible with a script, but I'm too tired to write it right now :-/
Maybe tomorrow... maybe. But note: the playlist the script creates will not be a smart playlist -- it would be an ordinary playlist.

How can I make a smart playlist sort album by artist in order of size?
I'm trying to figure out a way to make a playlist of songs I generally like from a very large library to fit on my iPod. The songs aren't rated, and I don't want to have a totally random selection chosen by a smart playlist.
I thought a good way to pare down the list would be to sort album by artist, and then filter that list in order of the size that each artist takes up. It's more important to get rid of an artist that I don't like that also hogs a lot of space than one that maybe only has one track. I figure if I could scan down the list and exclude the worst offenders, it conceivably would make the task much simpler.I'm trying to figure out a way to make a playlist of songs I generally like from a very large library to fit on my iPod. I usually make two playlists.
One playlist with favorites I do want on the iPod and another smart playlist to fill the rest of the iPod. Just limit the size to th esize of the iPod minus wthe size of my iPod selection playlist. -
Tracks on Smart Playlists are not listed on my iPnhone
Smart Playlists I have created in iTunes show up under the list of play lists on my iPhone. When I touch/click a Smart Playlist none of the tracks are listed. I can go to the Now Playing track and start playing. I have reset my iPhone and restored from a backup but the problem persists.
Isn't iTunes 10.5 r 9 a beta release for developers? If that's the case then isn't there a special web site for developers to discuss issues (and they are not supposed to discuss them on the public forum)? If you're not a developer and have this through unofficial channels then I'm not sure you can expect full functionality.

Smart Playlist of Artists who only have 1 or 2 songs?
Hi all,
Itunes has completely changed my buying habits. I now have a lot of artists where I only have 1 or 2 songs by them and their songs often get overlooked when I'm choosing an artist to listen to. I was trying to figure out a way to make a smart playlist that has all artists where I only own 1 or 2 songs by them.
Is that even possible?
Thanks in advance.I have a "live updating" smart playlist that is nothing more than 200 of the songs "Least recently Played" and I also add a rule to exclude songs with Play Count = 0 (to new stuff I added to the library doesn't fill it instead. I use this playlist when I am in the mood to listen to the things in my library I haven't heard in a long time without having to go find them.

Problem with ratings-based smart playlists in iOS5.
I use ratings-based smart playlists to organize my music. For example, a typical smart playlist will include all songs from a given genre rated 3 stars or better. Playlists work perfectly on PC/iTunes and iPad (and used to work perfectly on iPhone/iPod before iOS5), but on iPhone 4S (iOS5) and iPod touch (iOS5), only the lowest-rated songs show up; higher rated songs omitted from the smart playlist. However, I also always have a playlist that has the higher ratings. So the songs are on the iPhone/iPod, but just not in all the correct playlists. Anyone have help for me? Thanks.
I'm having the same problem-- my "Smart Playlists" don't seem to update. I created a new smart playlist with a single artist, and nothing comes into it-- so if I make one just for artist=devo, for example, no tracks come through despite their being hundreds.
I also employ smart playlists on my podcasts-- so when plays=1, it disappears from the list. These are not updating, despite my making no changes to them other than upgrading to iTunes 10.
My "recently played" list DOES seem to be updating, and I don't understand why I'm seeing this despite making no changes. -
Filter songs by rating (on the fly, without smart playlists)
Is there any way (3rd party app maybe) that would allow you to live filter the displayed/played songs by rating? ie. if I have an artist selected, and all 200 songs are shown by that artist -- I would like to select on the fly to only display/play songs that are rated 2 or higher.
Aperture has a similar function that does not require making smart lists -- "Display only 2 or higher" of the current album, etc. -- AND you can sort with a sub-filter in addition (in iTunes, I would show/play only 2 and higher, and maybe sub-sort by album, or shuffle it.)
The only current way to do this is to create a unique smart playlist for every artist, genre, etc. that you would want to filter by rating in that way. Alternately, you can sort by rating, so the best are at the top, but with large selection of those ratings I often want to be able to shuffle the order within that selected rating range.
This software addition would be very useful!

With sort by rating solution, the music can then only be sorted by rating -- and there will be songs of lower ratings played eventually.
Let me try to describe what I'm looking for more precisely:
Like in Aperture, there would be a small gui selection toward the top of iTunes, and you select what ratings should be shown/played -- for example, 2 & higher. Then, there will be no songs shown/played that are below 2 stars. You can then have it play on shuffle, or sorted by other data such as artist, album, etc. -- and you will never hear a song below 2 stars.
The smart playlist is the other workaround I've used, but it's also not the solution. It requires making a separate smart playlist for every possible artist/genre, etc. that you would want only (for example) 2 stars & above to play. For example, if on a whim I wanted to listen to all of my U2 music on random/shuffle -- I'd like to be able to just select Artist-->U2, and with the 2+stars GUI selection, I know I will never hear anything below 2 stars -- *without* having to take the time to make a smart playtlist for this random & rare mood. If I suddenly want a even higher selection of U2, I just click the 3stars GUI selection, and the shown & playable songs instantly update. No need to always have to create & edit smart playlists for such random selections...
This interface works extremely well in Aperture - I wish they'd migrate it over to iTunes!

I subscribe to about 100 podcasts, in 3 different categories (lets say News, Tech, Photography) and a few of them across all areas are video.
I am looking for a way to better manage these
I create a couple of smart playlists and
Smart Playlist one: News
Inclusion by Album Name or Artist name, etc
Sorted by Most Recently Added
Smart Playlist two: News unplayed
Inclusion: Above Smart Playlist + views = 0
Sort by Most Recently Added
..etc..
[I have to have 3 sets of these, plus another one that goes across all 3 and has a Video not Audio type selection]
Now when I use my Apple TV to connect to my iTunes library and display the Smart Playlist above, it displays in a different order than I see on my iTunes library in the host computer.
Questions are:
1. Any better way to manage my podcast subscriptions?
2. Any better way to then view on the Apple TV?

Thanks for your reply. This worked but it doesnt seem to be consistent.. not sure if the fact that I have a smart playlist based on another smart playlist (only because I want 5 anded conditions + 1 or'd which is playcount=0) and hence something goes wrong?
Any better way overall to manage these? I now have 4 pairs of these.
Also, any way to have a Smart Playlist that selects only video? They have the Media Kind = Podcast, but no Media Type = Video..

Smart Playlists w/"Date modified" not syncing to iPhone/iPad

I have the exact same problem. After using a smart playlist based on "Date modified" — like kylerrs — for years, it stopped working. Very frustrating. The playlist works fine in iTunes, but the corresponding playlist on my iPhone and my iPad is always empty.

Simply add a second rule to the smart playlist, one that has no effect on the results if you set to "match all": -- Playlist is 'Music' --
Sync your playlist again on the iPhone, and magically the contents looks now the same than in iTunes. -
Smart playlist isn't being followed
I recently have been using the smart playlist as a way to get around the loss of the shuffle by album feature on my touch. For a while it was working fine and suddenly, the ipod no longer follows the playlist. If I pick a sing off the playlist, it will play the first song and then after that, play a random song instead of the one that the playlist says should be next. I tried turning off the live updating, as well as copying the smart playlist to a dumb one and it still doesn't work.
C'mon Apple, restore the shuffle by album feature to the touch!Yeah, I had the same problem too with my iPhone 3G trying to sync my smart-playlists. (Specifically, my smart-playlists weren't syncing the correct list of songs from my iTunes. It would show a totally different list of songs on my iPhone, although the list in iTunes was correct.)
I went to the apple store yesterday with the same problem. the apple store genius told me me edit the smart-playlist and uncheck the box that says "live updating" (although this disable's iTunes from automatically updating the playlist according to the rules you set for it, say if I play a song iTunes will add it to my "recently played" smart-playlist, however it WILL update the smart-playist to what you have on your iTunes). To have the playlist update itself automatically again, just go back and click "live updating" to turn it back on.
I know it seems like a pain, but I'm guessing this is a problem with iTunes 9.0.1 Hopefully someone at Apple will recognize this problem and hopefully develop and fix. Good luck! -

ThanksWhy does it have to be a smart list? Why not just make a playlist and drag all the artists' songs into the playlist?
If it has to be a smartlist (because you want to play your favorites or just the songs you haven't heard in a while, or whatever) after creating the playlist for these artists, now create a smart playlist. Select the artist playlist as the source and then add your condition - unplayed or whatever. -
Layers of Smart Playlists don't auto update
I set up a smart playlist that only included songs not played in the past week (called 'unrecent'). This list dropped from about 200 songs to 150 songs last night after playing a lot of tunes.
I have another smart playlist that combines the above 'unrecent' list with my favourites (with about 20 songs). After docking the iPod however the combined list (called 'prime') still showed 220 songs in the list.
Only after editing the 'prime' smart playlist (without actually changing anything) did the playlist drop back down to about 170 songs.
Why wont this work automatically (with having to force it through by editing)? Please note, the basic smart playlist (unrecent) DID automatically update, just the other list that used it DIDN'T.
shuffle and 30gig Windows XP & eMacAre they both set to auto update?
I have not nested smart lists inside smart lists. It may be a quirk in the program. -
Not include digital booklets in smart playlists?
I don't know if there's any way to do this, but I have smart playlists created, which are based on certain genres, or only include certain artists - but they always include the digital booklets from these artists, and I can't just get rid of the digital booklets because it's a smart playlist, and it won't let me. Is there any way that I can choose to not include digital booklets in these smart playlists, besides deleting the artist from the booklet, in the actual library?

Smart playlist - only one 1 instance of artists?
Is there a way to create smart playlist(s) to accomplish the following:
Randomly choose songs from the library but do not repeat any artists in the list (in other words, you would only have 1 song from any of the artists)
Possible?Check the tracks that don't play...are they set to Skip When Shuffling? (Look under Get Info on the tracks.) And are you using the Shuffle feature when attempting to play the list?

DebraWith the timeline selected, go to File/Export/Movie and export each as a DV-AVI video.
You can then combine those AVIs into a new project with virtually no loss of quality.
