SMART PLAYLISTS:  ORGANIZING BY DATE ADDED & KEEPING ALBUM TRKS IN ORDER

Dear Knowledgeable Users of iTunes:
I would like to create a a Smart Playlist that will do the 2 following things:
1) Play albums in the order of date added
(I solved this one)
2) Play the songs in the order they come on the album
(Couldn't solve this...)
Summary: playing music in the order it was added to the library AND maintaing the original track order of the albums...
Is this to much to ask, it seems pretty practical-
In an attempt to accomplish this, I made a Smart Playist & selected:
Date Added: In the last 24 months
-This solved the 1st problem beautifuly
But now the albums play backwards- (as you know, iTunes rips album's songs in their original order, so when your sort by 'Recently Added', each album plays backwards ! -last song first, first song last and so on- This is problem I want to solve-
To summerize:
How can listen to my most recently added albums while the songs in their original order?
The point of all this is for listening to music on my iPod-
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated-
Thanks in advance!
-Temp

There are some issues to with live updating & smart playlists on iTunes 9, and also those containing mixed content, e.g. Podcasts & Music, though I'm not sure that is the problem here. You should be able to sort the playlist on any heading you like and then use *Copy to Play Order* to control the order that will be synced.

  • Playing smart playlist by release date on Shuffle

I cannot get this to work. I'm trying to listen to podcasts by release date but for some reason it's not. I have the smart playlist setup to include "Most recently added". Is there some other way to do this?

Create a playlist and add the podcasts you want to
it. The order you add them to the list will be the
order they play in. If you mix this order up, just
click on the far left bar above the track numbers to
restore it to the original order.
Since the podcasts under the podcast icon are sorted
in order by release date, if you drag a group of
podcasts into your playlist they will stay in that
    order.
    Hope this answers your question.
Yeap, I've been meaning to reply. This workaround does work for me. It's not perfect, but it's easy enought to create a new playlist called 'podcasts" and dragging and dropping the latest podcasts in it, and then manually syncing it to the ipod.
Of course I have to do the same for videos too.
BTW, most interesting we have the same computer. Except mine is the 500mhz version of the 1st gen tibook.

  • How to rid smart playlist of all video and keep selected music in it only?

I tried making a smart playlist that would be the source to Party Shuffle. I was successful in putting all the music into the playlist that I wanted, including exclude the music I didn't want. The one thing that's bugging me is that I put edited the playlist so that both Movies & Music Videos would not appear. It appears that when I edit the settings to that, not only do the Movies/Music Videos disappear, but so does all the music! WHY????? Why does this happen????

Okay, firstly, I'm sorry. I'm new to this ridiculously un-consumer-friendly service, and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to post a new question, so I am just posting in the first topic I've seen.
    a) How do I post a new question?
    b) My question is this: I just accidentally deleted my downloaded files from my hard drive. This consisted of only free podcasts. Now, when I look on iTunes, I still only see the files I have never downloaded. How do I get it to recognise that the files I have previously downloaded are no longer present?
If anybody could answer either of these questions (or preferably both), that would be grand.

  • IMporting multiple albums at once: sort on date added AND album or artist

When importing multiple albums at once, iTunes ads them in the library in an all mixed up order.
This makes it very annoying to change song info. I have to multi-select songs from the same album (clicking while pressing the control button) and then change stuff.
    1. Why can't iTunes automaticaly keep tracks from the same album together when adding new music from multiple albums?
    2. Why can't we sort by added date AND another column like artist or album?
    any solutions are very welcome
    greetz

The order iTunes is showing the tracks can be changed. Select the album column heading to get tracks list in album order. Normally within an album the tracks will list in track order when viewing this way.

  • I accidentally erased my smart playlist for "Recently added music" how do I create another?

I accidentally erased my smart playlist for "Recently added music" how do I create another?

    Create a new Smart Playlist:
    Match selected
    Date added : in last  : 2  : weeks
MediaKind : is not : Podcast
Limit to 25 : items : selected by : random
    Live updating selected

  • Smart Playlist with certain criteria not syncing

So this is an issue that has haunted me for months now. I thought it may be a problem with my iPhone 4 in particular, but now I have an iPhone 5s with the same issue.
So I have a couple of smart playlists on my iTunes. One of them in particular is for Recently Added Singles. When I add new music to my iTunes, if it is a single or a new individual track, I want these tracks to populate my smart playlist. When the album that the single appears on is finally released and I get it, I don't want these albums, including the tracks that were singles, to populate the recently added singles smart playlist as I instead add the entire album to a different playlist all together. The only way I could figure a way around these full albums populating my singles playlist was to add a disc number of '1' to all tracks in a full album, just leaving singles without a disc number and add a rule to my smart playlist that would only populate tracks with a disc number of less than 1. The playlist appears fine in iTunes, but the playlist is empty on my phone.
When I sync the playlist and you watch it adding tracks on the phone, you can see the tracks being added, but as soon as the sync is finished, the playlist is empty. Experimenting a little further, I changed the rule to populate the smart playlist with tracks with a disc number that is '1' only. iTunes populates and appears correctly, but when I sync the playlist, my phone it appears to ignore the rule completely and just abides by the other rules I have on the smart playlist, which are 'date added in the last 12 weeks' and 'media kind is music,' which includes, as you'd expect, all music added in the last 12 weeks, and not the intended, all music added in the last 12 weeks with a disc number of 1.
So does the iPhone ignore the disc number of tracks? I know that if disc numbers are used, the iPhone doesn't actually display or specifiy where one disc ends and the next begins, like it does on the new iTunes, but is this meta data not actually used by the iphone all together? Or does it handle it differently to iTunes?
It's not a major issue of course, it just bugs me because I sort my music quite particularly. The way I've been getting around it is by creating a smart playlist based on this smart playlist, naming one with 'iTunes,' and the one to sync to my phone with 'iPhone.'
I thought this just should be pointed out and reported so maybe it can be fixed in a update or something. It's quite a particular fault so maybe it hasn't come up before?
Anyways, all and help and advice welcome.

In another thread it was suggested to edit the Smart Playlist in iTunes for podcasts and uncheck Live Updating. This worked for me and my podcasts were again on my iPhone.

  • ITunes Match Smart Playlist sorting on iOS7 by date added?

    Playlist works find on iTunes.
Messed up on both iPad + iPhone
Criteria basically sorts by genre, and only for songs added within X months.
I have tried to add the criteria "Kind = music", and also limiting to 9999 songs, sorted by date.
The first few songs are correct and in the right order, but after that there are just random songs.
    Any ideas?

Hi guys, i have cracked it!!
Ok, manage music manually on your iphone, plug into your computer in itunes to do all this
. In each playlist, Sort by date added latest date at top of page
. On yr iphone, make a new playlist, call it ie: chill 2 or pop 2 etc
. Grab the chill playlist from iphone playlist and drag all into chill 2 folder
. Delete chill playlist from iphone
. Rename chill 2 playlist to be 'chill' same name as itunes playlist so it can sync when you sync again
I did this with all my playlists, within the iphone itself whilst connected to computer itunes, now on my iphone, i see all my playlists as date added not alphabetical!!
This has annoyed me for ages!! So glad i cracked it!! Found no answers on the internet, but so many people asking!!
    Cheers and goodluck

  • Album view in order of date added. Is it possible?

album view in order of date added. Is it possible?
In v10 I got used to ordering my music library with the newest additions on top, date added with the album view if it didn't take up more space.
Now it's just the songs and I really don't like this. Album view is interesting but usless in alphebetical order which seems to be the default.
I was told by another person here to use a smart playlist but the method they suggested was not clear.
Can someone please explain how to do this or if there is a better alternative for someone who liked the old song view>date added>with album art?
    -thanks

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. By "nr" are you referring to the shipping invoice that comes with the book? If so the answer is no. To order a book the library containing the book needs to be used.
If someone had a copy of the library that created the book initially they could order a book on their own Apple account without you knowing about it. *+BUT they would have to have a copy of the iPhoto LIbrary to do so.+*
So unless you think someone had access to your computer which housed the library a second copy of the book could not have been ordered.

  • Smart Playlists with Date Criteria

It seems any smart playlist with a date criteria (ie: Date Added) will not show up on any device that access the iTunes Match Service. I have several smart playlists with a date criteria and they show up blank on my iphone and ipad. Yet, if I delete the date criteria, the playlist populates on the device. I tried creating a smart playlist with just the date criteria and then in a new smart playlist referencing the date criteria smart playlist and the new playlist will not upload to icloud because an icloud smart playlist can not reference another smart playlist

So I went through technical support because I had this exactly some problem.  Smart playlist shows up in iTunes on my iMAC, as well as via Apple TV (both via iCloud and Home Sharing options.)  It also fully populates those smart playlists.
For my pre-existing Smart Playlists (that only have criteria for the GROUPING field) show up, have songs, but are quite a few songs short.  I then created a brand new play list with brand new tracks... and its empty on iPhone 4S and iPAD2.  Apple TV and IMAC are fine.
So technical support provided me with this response:  For smart playlists to work on iOS devices, the songs must be downloaded to the device.
My feedback was this: So this is chicken and the egg.  You create the playlist to easily locate and download those songs to your device, but you cant because they have to be on your device before they will show in the playlist.
I suppose the only work around is to create the smart playlist w/ your filters.  THEN create a regular playlist and copy everything in the SMART Playlist into the regular playlist.
I have not used Apple products for very long... approaching 2 years.  I moved everything to Apple.  Computers, laptops, portable devices, etc... I have been VERY impressed.  HOWEVER, this makes the point of Smart Playlists completely manual when it comes to your iOS device.
I will for sure be launching a compliant to www.apple.com/feedback.

  • Smart playlist of latest Albums

AFAICT, this seems an impossibility. You can set up a smart playlist for the latest added tracks, but only limited by number of tracks or overall size, neither of which is what I want. I sync this 'Latest' playlist to my iPhone and I don't want to get only part of an album since I probably wouldn't know until playing it and having it stop part way through when I'm not home. I really want to be able to be able to specify that this playlist only includes complete albums, but so far I've not been able to achieve this, even with multiple smart playlists etc.
Has anyone cracked this and found a way to make a Smart Playlist that contains the latest COMPLETE albums, limited by number of albums perhaps, or overall size?

Am I to assume that no-one else has found a way to do this?

  • Smart Playlists w/"Date modified" not syncing to iPhone/iPad

I'm posting this to the iTunes forum, because after a few months there's been no answer in the iPhone forum. User "kylerrs" found this first:
    kylerrs wrote:
Okay, so I normally have a custom made smart playlist which I name "Recently Modified" so I can see the list of songs which I have recently updated in quality or changed the artwork etc., but since updating to iOS5, this playlist still works fine on iTunes but appears blank on my iPhone 4 while all other playlists work fine. Any reason why this might be?
I have the exact same problem. After using a smart playlist based on "Date modified" — like kylerrs — for years, it stopped working. Very frustrating. The playlist works fine in iTunes, but the corresponding playlist on my iPhone and my iPad is always empty.
The sad thing is, this feels like Windows — something mysteriously stops working, you can't figure it out, and you give up — figuring, "Oh well, I just can't do that anymore..."
The original thread, with screenshots, is here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/18678228#18678228

I revive this old thread, because I had the very same problem.   After searching for other reports of problems with playlists, I tested a trick that worked for another problem.  And it worked!
Simply add a second rule to the smart playlist, one that has no effect on the results if you set to "match all": -- Playlist is 'Music' --
Sync your playlist again on the iPhone, and magically the contents looks now the same than in iTunes.

  • Smart playlist keeps copying to ipod although it's not selected

I've tried changing the name. I've made sure it's not selected to copy to the ipod. But a particular "smart playlist" that I've created keeps copying over to my ipod touch.
Any idea what I can do to stop it, aside from totally deleting the playlist?

Thanks for the response. I had thought of that and "no" I do not (and did not).
I'm really puzzled about this one and prefer not to scrub everything and start over. I imagine deleting a file or something may help to create preferences or something. I just have no idea at this point.

  • Apple please add album art (set/unset) to Smart Playlist criteria

Please allow me to define a smart playlist defining all tracks that have album art vs those that don't. I don't think the criteria allows this right now.

BTW it works just fine too, creating a playlist of all your songs that lack artwork.
I agree. I had been meaning to download and use the no artwork script for some time and this topic got me to finally do it. I had no problems whatsoever, although I learned that a third of my tracks have no cover art.

  • Playlists wont sort by latest date added like in itunes on iphone on ios5

After updating to ios5 on my iphone 4, my playlists that i made are the same as in my itunes (currently displayed on itunes as the latest date added to the oldest i.e. newest to oldest). My iphone syncs it as the oppoiste, even though in itunes is newest to oldest. any ideas?

Exactly same problem. I have a playlist sorted by "date added". Just updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 5 and it got a mess. Apparently, the first songs are showing on the bottom of the list - and even if I change it on iTunes to "invert" the playlist, it shows the same way on the iPhone.
It wouldn't be a big deal if the playlist didn't have more than 2000 songs (it's really frustrating to scroll all way to the bottom to find the first song). Hope Apple fix it soon.
