Smart playlists: song order not correct, mainly with "feat." artists

When creating smart playlists--usually for albums that have guest artists--the track order gets thrown out of whack, and I don't understand why. For example, just bought Santigold's most recent album, of which one has "feat. Karen O" in the "Artist" category. That's the first track on the album, but gets dropped to the last on the playlist. Any thoughts on how to fix this? It is incredibly frustrating.

Set a common Album Artist. Sort the resulting playlist as Album by (Album) Artist.

  • Smart Playlist Song Order Problem on iPod Nano 6th G

recently i got an iPod Nano 6th G after years of using my iPod Classic 5.5G, and so far it has been a bliss actually if it wasnt for one small thing
i have a somewhat large collection of music that i have - with a few exceptions - put in one big smart playlist with the rules provided in the pic to fit my needs
on my old iPod Classic when i sync it i find it in the ipod in the same ordered that shows on my iTunes, but with my iPod Nano that is no longer the case.... even the the same playlist in my iPod have the songs in the exact order as it is in my library on iTunes, once i unblug it the play list on iPod becomes arranged alphabetically by artist and obviousely that is my problem
so if anyone could guid me to correct it or even the cause of it i'ld be very thankful

Can someone point me to a forum somewhere where I can get help with this? I'm obviously posting to the wrong place. Thanks!

  • Playlist song order correct in iTunes, incorrect on device.

The playlist is smart.  The song order is correct in iTunes and shows the correct order on the device if you look at the contents through iTunes.  However, when looking at the playlist on the device itself the songs are out of order.

Well, while the playlist in iTunes and the playlist on the iPhone, as it appears in iTunes, match, the problem is that the iPhone seems to be stripping the instruction to order the songs randomly.  That instruction is given in the 'limit to 30 GB selected by random' line.  The list on the iPhone is in order from least recently played to most recently played.  The highlighted column in the playlist is the leftmost 'number' column not the Last Played column.  Any clues hiding out there?

  • Issue with exported playlist song order

I exported a playlist (with the playlist sorted on the manually arranged order, far left column) as a .xml file using iTunes 7.0.2. When a friend imports this playlist into his iTunes (7.0.1) the song order is incorrect (again with sorting done on the far left column). When I look at the exported XML file with a text editor the order of the song entries is also wrong in the XML file. Has anyone elsed noticed this problem?

Actually, I looked more closely in the text editor and the playlist order looks correct so there appears to be an issue with 7.0.1 (I guess).

  • New Smart Playlist Keyboard Shortcut Not Working

    Using iTunes 7.5/Leopard 10.5.1
The shortcut for creating a new smart playlist (optcmdN) is not working. However, I can use the keyboard shortcuts for creating a new folder or a new playlist. Any of you have the same problem?
    Thanks!

OK...this might be too simple to possibly be the answer...but is the number lock key down on your keyboard?
EDIT: Well... no, that can't be it...or the new folder and new playlist keys wouldn't work either. Have you downloaded any widgets or third-party apps recently?

  • Playlist song order doesn't list correctly in iPod, only in iTunes

I have a "Most Played" Smart Playlist that always shows in my iPod in the order that they are most played. Recently I bought two CDs that I imported into iTunes and put into my iPod and have been listening to it non stop ever since. Because of this I have a lot of new songs that rank very high in playcount. When my iPod is hooked up to my computer, iTunes shows the Most Played playlist with the new songs in the right order within the playlist, but when I disconnect the iPod and look in that playlist, the new songs with the high play counts appear all together at the end of the list! This drives me crazy, as I'm kind of a nut when it comes to play counts lol, but I don't know how to fix it. I haven't done anything different with regards to my iPod preferences and controls and don't understand why the song order is not as it appears in iTunes. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

  • HT204406 The songs on my computer itunes playlist and my iphone playlist songs are not matching up. I do see new songs I've added on my computer playlist on my iphone playlist but the songs are not in the same order. How do I get them to match?

Playlists matching on computer and iphone?  The playlists on my computer in itunes are not matching up with the "match" playlist on my iphone.  New songs do show up when I add them to a playlist, but the songs are all in different order.  If I edit a playlist on my computer how do I get it to match on my iphone?

Restore them to the new computer using the bakcup of the old one. If you don't have a backup of the old computer, you can re-download music purchased from the iTunes store. If they were imported from CD's, etc. You will either have to re-rip them or purchase third party software to extract them from the phone. The iPhone is not a backup or data transfer device.

  • Smart playlist sort order issue

I'm having an issue sorting a smart playlist. I've searched through other questions on here but can't find the identical issue.
I've created a smart playlist that contains the contents of two other smart playlists. I've tried to sort this list by 'name', by clicking on the arrow in the column heading, but the list still leaves the two playlists separately, ie. it sorts each original playlist separately, and then puts one after the other in the play order.
I have other smart playlists constucted in the same way, and have no issues with them, and I can't see what the difference is with this one!
    I'm using 11.0.4.4, on a Windows 7 PC.

I am also having the same problem. Running the newest iTunes and iPhone software my smart playlists are not working correctly. My "Recently Added" is correct in iTunes, and if I look at the playlist on my iPhone info in iTunes it is correct there, but the actual playlist on my iPhone is populated entirely with audiobook files. I have tried deleting and recreating the playlist which gives the same results. I have also specified that items within the playlist should be music files only and still get the same results.
I have a playlist that's Top 50 Most Played that's also not behaving properly (ie correct in iTunes but not on my iPhone).
    Any suggestions?

  • Smart Playlist in iTunes not the same as on iPod?

    Hi all,
Currently I am in the process of making my entire CD collection (> 800 CD's) available on my new iPod classic. Ripping goes fine, no problem at all. But I have a problem with the Smart Playlists. Every CD in my collection has a unique number. I put that number in the 'Comments' section of every ripped CD (select all tracks of an album, go into 'Get info' and fill the 'Comments' section with a number like 0245).
In iTunes I create a smart playlist containing every CD within a range of, say, 02. In iTunes I then see every CD starting with the number 02 (from 0200 to 0299). When i sync with my iPod, the playlists are available, but the sorting is not ok. I see a lot of tracks, but not organised by CD as in iTunes. Is there a way to change this so that on the iPod the sorting is the same as in iTunes.

Select your Smart Playlist in iTunes, arrange it in the order you want, then right-click on the Smart Playlist title in the sources panel and click on *Copy to Play Order*. Sync. Your iPod should now have the correct play order.

  • Playlist sort order not carried to iTouch

After upgrade to IOS 5, playlist (podcasts) sort order in iTunes on MBP is not maintained when syncing w/ iTouch.  No options on iTouch to sort.
    Thoughts or bug?
Related...one podcast would not purge from iTouch via sync, so had to restore iTouch.  Did not fix sort order transfer problem.

  • Smart playlists songs different from computer to iphone

Hi, I can't seem to get my smart playlists to match from phone to computer. I wan't to get the top 25 played list on my iphone, but the list is no where near correct but it is right on the desktop computer. I would love to listen to the 25 most played songs on my iphone. Please help!

Off the top of my head, I can only think that you do not have the same musics on the iPod that you have on the computer.
Is your iPod full? Because if it is, what may be happening is that you do not have your computer's the top played songs in your iPod, and it falls back to the iPod's available Top played songs.
Make sure that you select the musics you want to sync. I think you can sync playlists? (not sure, but if you can, sync your top played playlists, and whatever else, and then choose the option to fill the ipod with the remaining available space)

  • Playlist song order question

do the answers in the link below still apply since we have had many upgrades since the time of the post? thanks. I am having the same problem again. When I click on the column heading for the number column, it makes the album artwork appear toggle back and forth. How do I change the order of the songs? Thanks.

+If you use "create a playlist from selection", you can't reorder the songs by dragging and dropping.+
Yes, you can reorder songs if the correct column is highlighted.
It has a blank header, only a little arrow that points up or down.
If you can't drag them into a different order, then you are sorting that list by some other column. What column header is shaded light blue?
The one that has a blank header, the one iwth the song numbers in it.
You might have to scroll to the right to see it, depending on how many columns you are displaying..
I doubt it... this column, like the name column, cannot be moved or removed.
I just tested this with a playlist created from a selection.
And I just tested it again likewise and can reproduce the same bug at will (iTunes 9.0.2 (25)).

  • Bug: iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5 podcast smart playlist sort order and how to fix.

There seems to be a bug in iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5 involving the sort order of a smart playlist of podcasts. I created such a playlist and sorted by release date on iTunes but I noticed it had a different sort order on the iPod Touch.
After playing around with it a bit I found that the only way to preserve the sort order that I have in iTunes on the iPod Touch is to uncheck "Live Updating" in the smart playlist.

Confirming this incredibly annoying bug.  Basic list sorting not working... real bottom shelf work apple.
workaround update:  limit to must be turned on, set it to an absurdly high number if you don't want to actually limit the playlist, then one of the sortby options in that submenu will work.   The live update checkbox is irrelevant from experimentation.
This workaround does NOT fix the fundamental problem: sort order from itunes in smart playlists is not being synced and preserved in ios5 devices.
This is the latest in a long string of debacles which is making me seriously consider swapping to debian stable. (snow leopard to lion was a severe downgrade in performance for anyone doing heavy multitasking.. scheduling is FUBAR... when a command option escape beachballs on a brand new core 17 machine, your OS has serious problems with nice levels)

  • Playlist Song Order Chan

Searched the Forum at length for the answer but didn't find it. Sorry if I missed it. On my Zen Xtra I can see the Playlist in the right pane (in Organizer), select a song, left click hold, and drag it up or down, and it moves. It also works with arranging song order on the playlists on my PC and Zen Micro (when viewed in right pane). This does NOT work with my Vision M. Am I missing something or is that the way it is? Thanks.

Use the Zen Media Explorer for your player to edit the playlist. Open the player using that application choose edit playlist & change the order there. When done click Ok/Save (can;t remember which one it says ) & that should be all you can also add songs this way. However the playlist must have been created using the Creative software. It will not edit a playlist created with Windows Media Player.

  • Smart Playlist in folder not synching

Everything has always synched perfectly (and still does with +iTunes 10+ ) except one thing:
I have a Smart List (for Classical Music, named 'iPhone Classical' - *inside a Playlist Folder*, named 'iPhone') which is set to synch with my iPhone 3G (latest iOS). No errors.
But on my iPhone iPod app. the 'iPhone Classical' playlist shows 'No Music'.
Yet all the music which is in that enclosed Smart Playlist (on iTunes ) is there in the 'Songs' tab.
What might I be doing wrong?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the posts Mark & Diane.
I had the same problem with Smart playlists I created for podcasts based on Date Added, Plays=0, and Time (duration), which is a great way to listen to podcasts from multiple sources. Recently, I managed my ipod and iPad manually (did some house cleaning) and then afterwards all of these Smart playlists showed empty on my devices though fine on iTunes. Taking your suggestions of placing my smart playlists in a playlist folder fixed the problem, but I did not have to recreate my smart playlists, only move them.
    Yay!
