Smart Playlists - too smart for me

Hi!
I've encontered a problem when creating y new smart playlist: I want to add all songs I've added the last 60 Days without some songs. Say I don't want to add the whole Nevermind-Album (I put albums into playlists for easier burning) but just some songs I added to another playlist. When trying the smartlist-settings "playlist is not Nevermind" and "added since..." then no song from Nevermind is appearing, even if the time-criterion is fitting. (Hope I made myself cear - I'm using the german version of iTunes)
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance,
Burchi

After playing around, my assumption was correct. If I try to make a playlist that excludes a playlist containing all the tracks on an album with a playlist that contains some of the tracks on the album, the exclusion condition rules and none of the tracks on the album appear in the final playlist.
One way to leave out some of the tracks is to uncheck them.
Other than that, you need to find something common about the tracks you don't want to appear and build a condition based on that common element. For example, you could add a keyword in the Grouping or Comment field and then, instead of "Playlist is not Nevermind" you would use "Grouping is not <keyword>".

  • Playlist too big for Ipod shuffle

I've been happily using a 2nd gen shuffle and it selects songs from my favorite playlist. The playlist is 2000 songs, and obviously doesn't fit on that shuffle, but the shuffle just randomly picks songs from that specific playlist. Now I have a 3rd gen shuffle, and I get a pop up saying that my playlist is too big. It asks if I would like itunes to randomly select songs. If I check yes, which is what I want it to do, it deselects that playlist and starts selecting from our 10000 song library. Isn't there any way to have it randomly select from a specific playlist? I'm tired of trimming down playlists for all these products. Just make it easier and do it for me like it does for the 1st and 2nd gen shuffles. Any help?

Sometimes I have found that some movies wont transfer into iTunes, but others made the same way will. What I tracked it down to was the length of the file name - as soon as I shortened the name, they worked fine. Never looked at it closely enough to work out exactly the maximum number of characters that is acceptable.
AFAIK, there is no time limit on the length of a movie. I spliced together some shows to make a single 'movie' of just over 3 hours and that worked fine for me.
Anyway, try a shorter name and see if that helps.

  • No playlist too small for "this playlist will not fit on one audio CD"

    What on earth is goin' on w/ iTunes ?! ( In my case it's 7.6.2 (9) )
After having a 91.MB playlist receive the “*The songs in this playlist will not fit on one audio CD"* for a 700 MB audio-CD burn, I searched around here and found this thread . . . granted it's for Windows, but other mentions dating back to Jan. seem to indicate the problems pretty universal.
Anyone know anything more on this ?

And didn't we used to be able to re-edit our postings here?
That URL trick didn't work and looks a mess now !

  • Smart Playlist JUST for 'Free Songs of the Week?'

I would like to create a Smart playlist comprising exclusively the 'Free Songs of the Week' from the iTunes Store. So when I get the weekly 'Free Song,' it goes right into that list. But I need some sort of 'unique identifier' that allows this to happen, and I can't seem to find one. I go under all the 'View Options' and nothing seems to 'tag' these songs as unique, so I can't set up a Smart Playlist that includes just those songs.
Is there a way to do this?

The iTunes Store doesn't tag the free tracks any differently from any other track that I can see, so I can think of no automatic way to put just the free tracks into a playlist. You could, though, put "free" or something similar in the Comments section when you download one of the free items, and then have a Smart Playlist that looked for "free" in the Comments. That's the only way I can think of to accomplish what you want. That wouldn't be any easier than just dragging the free tracks to a normal playlist, but would allow you to have future Smart Playlists that process the free tracks.
    Hope this helps.

  • Smart Playlists: a beginners guide

    Hi all!
If you're like me, you probably couldn't wait to load all your music onto your iPod, but you very quickly realized that the twenty odd days of music in your computer will never fit into your iPod. Below is a guide for maximizing your iPod space while minimizing the amount of library shuffling you have to do to get the most of your music.
It's a fair amount of work up front, but once in place I think you'll find it worth the effort. It did take me some time to figure out how to best do this, so I figure some of you might still be in those early stages.
    I assume the following:
    1. You've got your favorites that you don't want to remove from your iPod because you listen to them often.
    2. Your library is dynamic. You add new tunes from time to time.
    3. You have much more music than will ever fit into your iPod.
    4. You have many songs you'd like to hear from time to time, but not all the time.
    5. You aren't 100% familiar with everything in your library (loaded a whole album with which you only really knew one or two songs?)
    6. You, like my ex girlfriend, have many moods. And your desires change accordingly.
Here's what I did. (And if you can improve upon this, by all means post how!)
    PREPARATION-
First, go to your library. Show the "rating" column so you can see how many stars your songs have. Sort them all by the number of stars. Then see all those ones without stars? Rate them. I'd say give 'em all 1 star if you're not sure what you want to give 'em yet. YOu can change this while listening to 'em in your iPod and you'll see later why that's key. Bear in mind, you can select a huge list of 'em by clicking on the first unrated song, then holding down SHIFT and clicking on the last one. Then you can rate 'em all 1 star in one fell swoop.
Second, check the genre of all your songs. If they haven't got one, consider adding a genre. This isn't critical, but you might find it's easier to build your playlists if you grab everything you might want by genres.
    SOURCE-
Okay, create a new playlist. Make it a non-smart one. I suggest giving it a functional name like "SOURCE - Rock & Alterna". When you go to reference these while making smart playlists, you'll find it easier to locate if all your sources are together. This playlist will be huge. The idea is to take everything you might ever want to hear from these genres and toss 'em into this playlist. Now, you can use a smart playlist to do it, but I'm suggesting the regular playlist because you can freely add the occasional non-genre song to it. (ie: the one that sounds rock but is listed as pop.) For now, don't put too much thought into this. Just stuff it all in there. This playlist won't be going on your iPod as is.
Next, we've got the intermediary playlists. These do the thinking that give the playlists their "smart" title.
Make these three new smart playlists:
    Rock & Alternative TOP 20
    Rock & Alternative MID 30
    Rock & Alternative BOT 50
Set the properties for them as such:
    Rock & Alternative TOP 20
    - songs follow all rules
    - Playlist is "SOURCE Rock & Alternative"
    - Rating is greater than zero stars
    - Playcount is greater than 10 (adjust to suit your needs)
    - limit to 20 songs
** Sort by Least Recently Played
    Rock & Alternative MID 30
    - songs follow all rules
    - Playlist is "SOURCE Rock & Alternative"
    - Rating is greater than zero stars
    - Playcount is less than 11 (adjust to suit your needs, but keep below the 'top 20' playcount)
    - Playcount is greater than 2 (adjust to suit your needs)
    - limit to 30 songs
** Sort by Least Recently Played
    Rock & Alternative BOT 50
    - songs follow all rules
    - Playlist is "SOURCE Rock & Alternative"
    - Rating is greater than zero stars
    - Playcount is less than 3 (adjust to suit your needs, but keep below the 'mid 30' playcount)
    - limit to 50 songs
** Sort by Least Recently Played
You've now got a total of 100 songs from your "SOURCE Rock and Alternative" playlist. 20 are your favorites. 30 are 'up and coming' or quasi-favorites etc. And 50 are going to be ones you don't know as well. Mind you, you can change the number of each of these. Just keep track of how many you have in each. I chose for the "top" because that's about how many indispensible songs I have for the genre. If you've got 50 that you can't live without, adjust the numbers accordingly. The 'top' ones are the ones you want to keep in your iPod all the time.
Now, the actual playlist you're gonna put into the iPod:
Create a new 'smart' playlist. Name it whatever the heck you want (I'll call it "R&A". And add these rules:
    - songs follow any rules
    - Playlist is "Rock & Alterna Top 20"
    - Playlist is "Rock & Alterna Mid 30"
    - Playlist is "Rock & Alterna Bot 50"
    - limit to 100 songs
    ** Sort by Random
It is important to keep the number of songs in this playlist equal to the total number of your 'top' 'mid' and 'bot' playlists.
So here's what you've got now:
A mix of 100 songs in random order. You're going to hear some songs you don't know well. If you don't like them, rate them zero stars from your iPod (center button twice) and they'll fall off the list from then on and be replaced by a new song you don't know well (because it's "least recently played"). As you listen to some of 'em more and more, they'll move their way from the Bot 50 to the Mid 30. Songs in the middle won't move as much, but if you really like them, they might squeeze their way up to the top 20. It's important to keep the "least recently played" option on, because that's the only way to guarantee these playlists update every time you sync up.
I also suggest keeping some empty space on the iPod as the size of this smart playlist will change every time you sync. (because the songs you just listened to will be dropped off and replaced with new ones which are different durations)
At first, you'll have lots of songs you don't know well. But as you rate 'em zeros if you don't want 'em on there, the list will shrink and you'll see some more consistancy.
Also, when you buy new songs, just toss 'em into the SOURCE playlist and they'll work their way up the charts as you listen to 'em.
I hope this multi-tiered smart playlist works out for you as well as it has for me. Let me know if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions.

There is no way on an iPod to say "Oh, I don't like this song. Take it out of circulation." You can do it from iTunes once you get home if you remember which song it was, yeah, but someone like me who has a hard time remembering as far back as the beginning of this sentence will likely forget the song title by then.
If you use ratings as a means of removing the song, then you can do it on the fly.
But you make an excellent point. Why rate songs you haven't actually determined a rating for yet?
It'd make more sense to change all the intermediary playlists to include the rule "Rating *is not* 1 star". That way zero star songs can be played as well as anything two stars or higher, but songs you've rated as bad will be removed next time you sync up.
    Thanks for pointing that out.

  • Smart Playlists not updating on iPod

    Hi,
I have a couple very simple smart playlists, basically one for each podcast i listen to the smart playlist picks out the podcasts of a specific name that are unplayed.
if I look at the smart playlists in the platlist pane of iTunes they contain the proper contents (say 3 episodes of TWIT I haven't listened too) but on my Nano they will be empty or cotain only a partial list of correct content.
I have Itunes set to auto sync, even tried manual sync still no luck.
    Any ideas?
BTW, I'm using the latest version of iTunes and OS X on a dual 2.0 GHz G5

    Well -

This is a worldwide forum and it's possible that someone with the answer to your question is asleep on the other side of the world to you at the time you posted and repeatedly bumped.
If you had browsed throught the other threads here, you would have noticed that you're not the only one to be having issues with Playlists changes not transferring to your iPod. In fact, the number of posts about it suggests to me that there is a problem as a result of iOS7.
So you can do two things, should you wish:
    Look through recent discussions about Playlist update problems (rather than the "more like this" section, which will give you results prior to iOS7) to see if anyone has figured out a solution;
Wait for the next update to iOS7 and see if that fixes it.

  • FEATURE REQUEST: Allow Smart Playlists to sort by Release Date

I listen to my iPod in my car and have a one of those kits where you can control your iPod through your stock stereo (i.e. select playlists by pressing buttons 1-6, and changing tracks with the next track/ last track buttons). One of my playlists is a smart playlist that looks for all downloaded audio podcasts that have not yet been played. As of right now, I have to go into the playlist after every update and reorder the podcasts manually in order from earliest release to newest release. The only date-sorting column right now is "date added". This doesn't work because if I update and download two or three episodes from one podcast, they all have the same date in that field, even if they were released on different days.
Please iTunes, allow a column heading that sorts podcasts by Release Date. This would make my life a lot easier and I'm sure I'm not the only one. I know when I'm looking at all my podcasts from the Podcast-Manager portion of iTunes that I can see the Release Date column, however it is not an available column outside of that view.
Anybody else wanna see this feature?

I was looking for the exact funtion too. Please don't make our life any harder

  • My smart playlists are not showing up on my iPhone after turning on Music Match

I have turned on Music Match (iOS 5 GM and iTunes 10.5 r 9) and can see all the songs in my library now across the cloud. The iPhone also has copied over most (but strangely not all) of my regular playlists and my folder structure.
But all the Smart Playlists I created for my iPhone are not showing up so my music is not grouped the way I want it to be.
For example, I have a playlist that selects out all the songs with three stars or more that have not been played in the last 2 weeks (so I only hear songs I like, but have not heard lately).
    So what's up??

Isn't iTunes 10.5 r 9 a beta release for developers?  If that's the case then isn't there a special web site for developers to discuss issues (and they are not supposed to discuss them on the public forum)?  If you're not a developer and have this through unofficial channels then I'm not sure you can expect full functionality.

  • Ipod Touch Apps NOT syncing (Bonus: manually managing smart playlist)

Can Someone Please Explain this to me simply?
    1) I have a 32GB ipod Touch and it will NOT let me do anything with my apps from my itunes. I click on my ipod touch under devices on itunes. Then I click on apps next to summary and the entire section is grayed out in a way that I can not sync my apps nor arrange them how I would like to. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?
PLEASE help me with question 1.) FIRST
2)This question is just a little more general but I have been searching and not able to find the answer, but I like to manually manage my music from my itunes to my ipod touch in a way that my entire itunes library does not load on my ipod touch. However, I have a few SMART playlist in which I click and drag the entire SMART playlist to my ipod touch. However, I have a SMART playlist set up for recently downloaded/purchased songs in my itunes, yet every time I drag that SMART playlist to my itunes it adds ALL of the same songs including the new ones instead of simply only adding the new ones and skipping the songs already on the device...how would i fix this?

I seem to have found a way to fix this. For every app on the touch, I deleted the copy from Applications in iTunes and resynced to have iTunes get a new copy from the device. This seems to have corrected the problem.

  • How to highlight or make a Smart Playlist of missing music files?

I recently converted my library from Mac to PC and out of the 45000 songs there are around 1500 missing. It'll take forever to search my library for the ! next to each missing sing. Anyway to simply get all the missing songs in one list?

You really don't get it, do you.
I really do: You can't bring yourself to say "OK, my solution is not practical or helpful". You're dancing all around it.
I wasn't meaning to "lecture" you but I was - and am - really annoyed. I'm sorry, but I honestly felt that your solution was more about you feeling a need to be technically correct when clearly it was an unhelpful answer and I'm not going to go along with that. And it looks like you're not going to admit your solution was unhelpful.
I might seem to be over-reacting but the thing is it's not just this thread.
I have noticed that there is a lot of this going around on these forums and it's annoying because it derails perfectly sensible questions and wastes a lot of time. It's happened quite a few times to me and the common thread seems to be those who engage in this behaviour have a whole lot of "discussion board points".
What you should have asked is, "Is there an available field in the tags of a movie file that I can use in a Smart Playlist to select for only HD movies". And I would have given you a one-word answer. NO
Yes, I should have. Technically. Semantically. I suppose. Sure.
But anyone can get that from "How can I make a smart playlist of only HD movies?" without assuming I'd want to first manually select all the movies. That's the purposes of the joke quote which seemed to be lost on you. I wasn't just randomly quoting you know, I was making a point.
If only you'd given me a one word answer. Now that would have been helpful.

  • Smart playlists do not display in same sort order as host iTunes library

    Hello,
I subscribe to about 100 podcasts, in 3 different categories (lets say News, Tech, Photography) and a few of them across all areas are video.
I am looking for a way to better manage these
I create a couple of smart playlists and
    Smart Playlist one:  News
Inclusion by Album Name or Artist name, etc
         Sorted by Most Recently Added
    Smart Playlist two:  News unplayed
Inclusion:  Above Smart Playlist + views = 0
         Sort by Most Recently Added
    ..etc..
[I have to have 3 sets of these, plus another one that goes across all 3 and has a Video not Audio type selection]
Now when I use my Apple TV to connect to my iTunes library and display the Smart Playlist above, it displays in a different order than I see on my iTunes library in the host computer.
    Questions are:
    1. Any better way to manage my podcast subscriptions?
    2. Any better way to then view on the Apple TV?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Thanks for your reply. This worked but it doesnt seem to be consistent.. not sure if the fact that I have a smart playlist based on another smart playlist (only because I want 5 anded conditions + 1 or'd which is playcount=0) and hence something goes wrong?
Any better way overall to manage these?  I now have 4 pairs of these.
Also, any way to have a Smart Playlist that selects only video?  They have the Media Kind = Podcast, but no Media Type = Video..
    Many thanks,
    Vik

  • Playcount and Smart Playlist problem

Can someone explain what I consider strange behavior on the part of iTunes syncing? I have noticed it with my old 3rd gen iPod, my iPhone, and now my new new Nano.
    Here's what happens:
    1) I have smart playlists set up for each my podcasts, so that they contain only episodes with a playcount of 0, and with live updating checked.
    2) Let's say I have a particular podcast with 4 unplayed episodes, and I go for a walk at the beach. I play a podcast episode all the way through, it goes to the next episode, and then the next. All 3 are played all the way through.
    3) I turn off my iPod/iPhone/Nano at the end of my walk. There are now 3 episodes that have been played and one that has not.
    4) Later in the day I turn the IPod/iPhone/Nano back on, and lo and behold all 4 of the episodes are still there, cued up to the beginning of the episode, not the one unplayed one I am expecting.
But the weird part is, it works just the way it's supposed to if, at any point before I turn off the devices, I back out of the playlist and click into a different playlist. Then, when I go back to the original one, the played episodes are gone just as they should be.
I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, or not understanding how this works, so can somebody please explain what's going on?

ok, that actually makes a lot of sense, and you're probably right.
But one of the reasons it's so annoying is that if I forget to back out of the playlist before I sync to iTunes the next time, it treats all the played episodes as unplayed.
And sometimes I need to do more than just back out of the playlist, I actually have to go into a different playlist and then back out of that one and go back into the original one before the rules stick.
Obviously not a huge problem in the overall scheme of things, but really, really annoying.
    Anyway, thanks for the input.

  • Possible to exclude double songs in smart playlist?

I made a smart playlist based on a category. However the list contains a lot of times the same song. Is it possible to automatically exclude doubles that will be added by itself during time?
    André

I have about 600 songs that I have put in the genre of "chrismas" I have also rated them. I created a smart playlist in iTunes for 4 stars and up tunes within the christmas genre. From that in iTunes I get about 500 songs in that smart playlist (I like christmas songs). I sync it with the iPod. When I go to that smart playlist I get about 166 songs not the 500 that shows up in my iTunes.
Now I did discover one more thing today. I like to play my playlists in shuffle song mode. That is where I see this problem. Well today I turned that off and.... the 500 songs are shown ( what I mean by this is when a tune is playing you get the message that this is " 1 of 500. Same playlist in shuffle mode I get "1 of 166"

  • Smart Playlist in folder not synching

Everything has always synched perfectly (and still does with +iTunes 10+ ) except one thing:
I have a Smart List (for Classical Music, named 'iPhone Classical' - *inside a Playlist Folder*, named 'iPhone') which is set to synch with my iPhone 3G (latest iOS). No errors.
But on my iPhone iPod app. the 'iPhone Classical' playlist shows 'No Music'.
Yet all the music which is in that enclosed Smart Playlist (on iTunes ) is there in the 'Songs' tab.
What might I be doing wrong?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the posts Mark & Diane.
I had the same problem with Smart playlists I created for podcasts based on Date Added, Plays=0, and Time (duration), which is a great way to listen to podcasts from multiple sources. Recently, I managed my ipod and iPad manually (did some house cleaning) and then afterwards all of these Smart playlists showed empty on my devices though fine on iTunes. Taking your suggestions of placing my smart playlists in a playlist folder fixed the problem, but I did not have to recreate my smart playlists, only move them.
    Yay!
