Smart quotes from InDesign export

When exporting copy from InDesign CS3, the smart quotes do
not convert to html code. What am I doing wrong?

I'm not pasting an exported file. I copied and pasted from
InDesign to Appleworks. Appleworks converts the smart quotes to
html code when exporting. A pretty nice job, actually, but an extra
step.

It shows up as a smart quote in the source, rather than the

  • Photoshop CS6 - Pasting Smart Objects from InDesign CS6 look awful

    Since upgrading from CS5 I'm having a huge problem using Smart Objects.
    What:
    Smart Objects pasted from InDesign into Photoshop are pixelated and corny beyond belief. Originating material placed in InDesign is hi-res (e.g. 600ppi) but when pasted in PS it looks crappy.
    How:
    Selecting an image in InDesign and pasting it in PS in a 72ppi file.
    Typically I need to copy elements from previous art in ID and re-compose and use for web.
    Why:
    Can't seem to fix it. Have tried with Anti-Aliasing both on and off to no avail. None of the Image Interpolation settings affect this either.
    Only solution is to scale the placed Smart Object to something like 400% where it suddenly looks nice again, rasterize and then scale it back down.
    Theory:
    Smart Object scaling is flawed in PS CS6.
    Note: All scaled images in InDesign already look gritty and awful. Even with Display Performance: High Quality set (using default settings). Seems to me like CS6 scaling is b a d.
    Anyone else seeing this?
    Thanks
    Image 1: Smart Object rasterized at same size as placed. (ouch. awful.)
    Image 2: Smart Object Scaled to 400%, rasterized and then scaled back to original size (yum yum, like it used to be without up-rasterize-down-scaling)

    That does not resolve the anti-aliasing issue in CS6 - it still looks rather bad.
    The anti-aliasing sampling method applied to smart vector objects is just extremely bad looking. And it is not merely an issue in Photoshop: exporting artwork from Illustrator at web/screen resolution using the web export is absolutely abysmal looking (not other word applies here, unfortunately).
    I explain more about this issue here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/6002543#6002543
    The best option is to blow up the artwork, rasterize, and then scale down with bicubic or bicubic automatic, depending. But even then you will not achieve the same quality that can be attained with other tools that, for example, support catmul rom and mitchellnetravali for downsampling.
    Anyway, Adobe applications are very weak when it comes to proper downsampling and file size optimization for web and screen graphics. You're better off looking someplace else.

  • PDF/A-1b compliant PDF from InDesign exported PDF

    Hi folks.  I need to produce a pdf/a-1b compliant pdf from an InDesign document and it is giving me fits.  Because InDesign offers no native option to export pdf/a-1b compliant files, I have been exporting my document with the available presets (I've tried all of them), then running the pdf/a-1b conversion in Acrobat.  However, this conversion fails every time, usually on font subset and colour issues depending on how I set up the initial export from InDesign.  The only way I have managed to get a file to pass the conversion is to export from InDesign, save that pdf as images, rebuild the original pdf from the image files, then run the pdf/a-1b preflight from Acrobat.  Trouble is that this results in a serious loss of resolution that I can't have for my purposes.  Anyone have any ideas on how I can produce a pdf from InDesign that will pass the pdf/a-1b preflight in Acrobat?

    You have to do it in Acrobat Pro after PDF export.

    HOW TO EXPORT EMBEDDED AUDIO or VIDEO AS AN INTERACTIVE PDF FILE (USING .SWF - INDESIGN and ACROBAT PRO)
    by Darren Mok
    I was teaching an InDesign class today and had the same problem where students could not embed their mp3 audio files into their exported PDF file (animation would work but no audio). I solved it last week for two students but forgotten how I did it - fortunately however, after hours of tinkering I finally found the answer again!
    This is what you have to do:
    1.     create indesign cs6 file; (including audio)
    2.     export it as a swf file; (check audio works - it should as swf in Flashplayer or html in browser) note RESOURCES folder containing audio files is also exported
    3.     import swf file in new indesign cs6 document;
    4.     export the imported swf file as an interactive pdf file; (animation will work but audio/video will NOT WORK!)
    5.    open PDF using Acrobat Pro and right-click to set the swf properties
    6.    add the exact Resources FOLDER directory that was exported when you exported the .swf (it should contain all the audio .mp3 files) - you cannot just simply add the .mp3s from ANY directory!!
    7.     walah it should now work! save the .pdf file and you should notice a file size increase
    8.     you can actually now delete the folder containing the audio (they are now embedded into the .pdf!) and the .pdf WILL PLAY AUDIO as one file!! WALAH!
    9.     repeat process to embed video files as well
    10.     your welcome
    *PLEASE NOTE: Checking the Properties/Resources in Acrobat Pro and adding a different audio directory or indivual files will NOT WORK if it isn't the same name as the exported folder when you exported the .SWF - IT MUST BE THE SAME DIRECTORY FOLDER NAME!!
    Let me know how you go and if you found this answer helpful. I agree it's an awkward way of doing it but I guarantee you it works!!
    Do I get an Adobe Tier 2 Level support badge now?
    Cheers.

  • Blank pages in pdf exported from InDesign

    Forgive me if I've already posted this, but I'm new here. All was well with a book project until yesterday when I exported to pdf and two pages came up blank. Why would that be and how can I fix it?

    Actually, there is no such set of privileges as preview privileges in terms of embedding. TrueType and OpenType fonts either allow no embedding (the font cannot be embedded within a PDF, EPS, or ePUB file under any condition), preview and print embedding (the font may be embedded, but only for purposes of display and printing - such text within the PDF file may not be edited), or installable embedding (the font may be subsequently installed someplace else).
    When you export PDF from InDesign, if the font used within the InDesign document has at least preview and print embedding privileges, it will be embedded within the PDF file. Otherwise, you will likely get a warning from InDesign export as well as a PDF file that does not display properly unless you have those fonts actually installed on the PDF file recipient's computer system.
    The way to check as to whether the font is properly embedded in a PDF file is to open the file in Acrobat, press Command D, and click the Fonts tab at the top of the dialog box. Each font referenced in the PDF file is listed. If the font is embedded, it says either Embedded or Embedded Subset along with the font's name. If the font isn't embedded, it will also tell you what font is being used for display, possibly the same font accessed from your installed fonts or perhaps a substitution font.

  • Microsoft Word "Smart Quotes"

    I hope this will save other developers some time.
    This may be obvious to others, but I just spent several hours Googling and testing to determine what actually happens when a user copies text containing "Smart Quotes" from Microsoft Word into a Java JTextComponent. For those not familiar with Smart Quotes, by default, MS Word changes double-quoted strings from using the US-ASCII character for quote (0x22) into left- and right- curly quotes (UTF-16: 0x201c and 0x201d). Word also does this with serveral other characters. This plays havoc with the display and Java Strings later encoded with java.beans.XMLEncoder, unless treated carefully. Here is what I discovered (obviously, this applies to MS Windows):
    All values are in hexadecimal.
    - Word is storing the character for double quote as UTF-16 internally (201C).
    - When the character is copied to the clipboard, it is copied as UTF-8 (E2 80 9C).
    - When the clipboard is pasted into Java, Java is assuming the it was originally Windows-1252 encoded, because that is the default for the US-EN locale in Windows XP (probably also Vista, but I only tested in XP).
    - Java translates this into a-circumflex, euro-sign, o-e-ligature, the characters corresponding to E2, 80, and 9C respectively in Windows-1252 and represents it internally in UTF-16 as 00E2 20AC 0153.
    -When the String is XML-encoded using java.beans.XMLEncoder, it is written in UTF-8 as C3A2 E282AC C593, which equates to UTF-16 00E2 20AC 0153 -- the characters a-circumflex, euro-sign, o-e-ligature.
    I am not sure how to fix this, but maybe another reader does. I am experimenting with the Clipboard (java.awt.datatransfer) to see if I can programmatically find out the original character encoding (in this case, UTF-16).

    Doesn't the DataFlavor contain the character encoding? What is the content of the InputStream returned by
                InputStream is = (InputStream)contents.getTransferData(DataFlavor.getTextPlainUnicodeFlavor());
    If I use
                    DataFlavor df = DataFlavor.getTextPlainUnicodeFlavor();
                    String mimeType = df.getMimeType();
                    String encoding = mimeType.replaceAll(".*?charset=(.*?)\\s*$", "$1");
                    InputStream is = (InputStream) contents.getTransferData(df);
                    ByteArrayOutputStream baos = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
                    byte[] buffer = new byte[1024];
                    for (int count = 0; (count = is.read(buffer)) != -1;)
                        baos.write(buffer, 0, count);
                    baos.close();
                    result = baos.toString(encoding);to transfer
    Hello "World"
    which Word changes the quotes to the smart 'smart quotes' version I get as a result
    Hello “World”
    which is what I expect.
    Am I missing something?

  • Smart quotes stored in DB are displaying as ? after jdbc select

    I originally posted this to the general forum, but it was suggested that I post it here where Sergiusz Wolicki from Oracle might be able to help.
    I have an Oracle 10 DB set up with the following character set
    NLS_LANGUAGE AMERICAN
    NLS_CHARACTERSET WE8MSWIN1252
    NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET AL16UTF16
    I am connecting to the database using JDBC thin client. I have a web page that is encoded using
    <%@ page language="java" pageEncoding="Windows-1252" contentType="text/html;charset=Windows-1252" %>
    The scenarion I am having problems with is the following. In an input field the user copies a so-called smart quote from Word and submits. I then update the corresponding database field and then return to the page and display the result.
    If I display the string that I wrote to the database back in the page, without selecting it from the database, it displays correctly. However, if I select it from the database and then display it in the page I get a question mark ('?') - note that this is NOT the upside down variety.
    I believe it is inserting it into the database correctly. I can go into sql plus and do a select on the field and it appears to be correct. I can also use the ascii function and it shows the character as character 145. Here is what I did:
    select middle_name from employee where employee_id=100;
    MIDDLE_NAME
    select ascii(middle_name) from employee where employee_id=100;
    ASCII(MIDDLE_NAME)
    145
    So my problem is getting it out of the database and into a java string properly.
    I know I can solve this issue by changing the database character set to UTF-8, but I am not in control of this and it is not an option.
    Thanks in advance for any help on this.

    I suspect this may be the result of bug #4659157. Upgrade your JDBC driver to 10.2.0.4 or to any 11g driver and retest.

  • Indesign export of PDFs - images in pdf fragmented, missing metadata

    Can anyone help with this one?
    We use InDesign CS3 to create PDF 1.6's, directly from InDesign export. The metadata contained in the images on the layout normally are visible in the PDF when you control click and select "show metadata" on the image with Acrobat's touch up object tools. Ocassionally, there is an unknown problem in the process where a given image will "fragment" -- when you click on it in the PDF, a frame surrounds only part of the image, and there's no "show metadata" choice to select. This is kiling us because we doconstruct those PDFs and put them into our long term archive, and the metadata is missing there!
    Anyone know of any reason InDesign export would give such results?
    Any help would be appreicated!
    Thanks.

    Thanks Bob,
    We're just reviewing detailed data now, so it's unclear whether we have any cases where it's a placed PDF (most are tiffs, psds, etc). Good point - if the pdf within is a 1.3 that would be a problem. . .same too with a placed ID file, though I know for sure we're not doing that. I'll post what we find.
    We are ok with regard to version patches. But, Bob, do you by chance know of any specific bugfixes (i haven't read the release notes) that address this? that would help to know too, so as to rule out some times in the past before the patch was applied where the problem occured.
    Meanwhile David W. Goodrich's reminder of adobe technote 332920 if i read it right, suggests non raster images would fail to pass metadta, at least in CS2, i wonder if that applies to cs3 too. . .

  • UDF for all inputs (fix microsoft smart quotes)

    Does anyone know how to add a UDF for all inputs and outputs
    to a query?
    I am trying to use the function to remove all smart quotes
    from being displayed and don't want to change all the pages on the
    site.
    The UDF I'm using is the following:
    <CFSCRIPT>
    function killcurly(formval){
    var outval = formval;
    outval = replace(outval,chr(8220),chr(34)); // replace left
    Curly double quote
    outval = replace(outval,chr(8221),chr(34)); // replace right
    double quote
    outval = replace(outval,chr(8216),chr(39)); // replace left
    Curly single quote
    outval = replace(outval,chr(8217),chr(39)); // replace right
    Curly singe quote
    outval = replace(outval,chr(146),chr(39),"ALL");//replace
    square with single quote
    outval = replace(outval,chr(8230),'...'); // replace MS
    ellipsis with three periods
    outval = replace(outval,chr(8211),'-'); // replace MS em dash
    with ASCII dash
    outval = replace(outval,chr(10),' '); // optionally get rid
    of line break
    outval = replace(outval,chr(13),' '); //optionally get rid of
    carraige return
    return outval;
    </CFSCRIPT>
    Any info would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Justin

    I guess I should be more specific.
    I'm trying to add a function to all inputs without adding
    killcurly(varablename) to every declaration. (Each variable is also
    a different name.)
    I have about 100 or so files that need to be changed to this
    format and was wondering if there was an easier way to add it to
    all my variables?
    Thank you for your response,

  • Data Export From InDesign CS6 to Excel Please Help

    Hi!
    I need to export text from a 416 page catalog into an excel document. The text is formatted with paragraph and character style sheets, but the text frames do not link together. Or is there a way to export the text from InDesign with the page number into a text file, then the text file into an Excel document. Thank you so much for your help!

    That is not possible. You're going from a "smart" layout application to a dumb one.
    I don't think you could even place it as a PDF file of the text into Word and have it work.

  • Auto-generated links exported from InDesign do not work in tablet apps

    Hyperlinks automatically detected and exported from InDesign CS6 8.0.1 as a PDF work fine on the desktop version of Acrobat Reader. However, on the iPad version of Adobe Reader as well as iBooks and GoodReader, these links are completely ignored, meaning they are just text.
    On the other hand, if I was to manually set the hyperlink in InDesign or Acrobat, the link works fine.
    It would be extremely tedious and time consuming to manually reset hundreds of hyperlinks in my documents since InDesign use to handle this correctly.
    Is this a bug? If so, it's pretty serious and should be Adobe's priority to fix since millions of people read documents on tablet devices.

    No, it's a Feature of Acrobat and reader that they attempt to create links from anything that "looks like" a URL. Other readers lack the feature.
    It's not good practice to depend on this in any case as it's hardly foolproof even in Acrobat. Links that break across lines, for example, will not be properly recognized.

  • How do I link to Anchor Text from browser to PDF file exported from InDesign?

    I see that this question was asked previously but not answered:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3737541
    I need a way to link to topics (from an HTML page) within a structured PDF file generated from InDesign, i.e. one that has an interactive bookmarks
    panel, that doesn't break the links when the file is updated.
    In particular, I don't want to refer to:
    *  page numbers because the document will repaginate when it is updated, breaking existing links
    * named destinations that are numeric as addition/deletion of topics renumbers the named destinations, breaking the links.
    Is there any option in InDesign that creates named destinations derived from bookmark titles as that would seem to solve my problem?
    I have a similar need, but I have not been able to find an answer anywhere online, even after a several hours of research.
    I am on contract with General Electric to develop a UI Style Guide for an international team of developers. My client wants to be able to distribute the Style Guide as a PDF document, but needs to provide links to specific topics when submitting a "Story" in an Agile development environment to the programmers.
    Ideally, I would like to be able to create "named destinations" in InDesign such that I can provide the client with a list of URLs similar to this format:
    file:\\StyleGuide\Test1-20131024a.pdf\#nameddest=AnchorText-01
    However, I can not figure out how to create "named destinations" in the PDF file from the InDesign file in which I have created the Anchor Text in the Hyperlinks tab.
    Alternately, the client would be satisfied with the ability to link to specific bookmarks in the exported PDF file that have been derived from the configuration of the Table of Contents styles, but my research has led me to believe that it is not possible to hyperlink from a browser window to a bookmark in a PDF file (only to specific page numbers, search word lists, named destinations, and comments) as described here: http://blogs.adobe.com/tcs/2011/01/tcs-specific/linking-to-a-page-within-a-pdf-and-more.ht ml
    Having been using InDesign since 1988, when it was PageMaker, I would prefer to use it to provide GE with the most attractive deliverable, but they are now leaning heavily toward having me licensed with Madcap Flare, which has this capability built in:
    http://webhelp.madcapsoftware.com/flare9/Default.htm#Nav_Links/Named_Destinations/Creating _Named_Destinations.htm
    Please help me to find a solution that will allow me to continue using InDesign for this project.
    Thank you!
    Lynne O’Connor
    Technical Writer (contractor)
    GE Oil & Gas - Measurement & Control

    Follow-up post (solution is not available):
    I have just completed a phone call with Gaurev Sethi of Adobe escalated technical support in which I shared my screen to explain and demonstrate the desire to link from an external URL to a specific location within a PDF file that has been exported from InDesign. After 40 minutes, during which I was placed on hold a few times while he consulted with his team, it was determined that the desired functionality is not supported in InDesign and has been identified as a limitation of the software.
    In researching alternate documentation software that supports PDF export, I discovered that Madcap Software supports this functionality in its Flare product:
    http://webhelp.madcapsoftware.com/flare9/Default.htm#Nav_Links/Named_Destinations/Creating _Named_Destinations.htm
    Note that linking via URL to a bookmarked location within a PDF is not supported:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/tcs/2011/01/tcs-specific/linking-to-a-page-within-a-pdf-and-more.ht ml
    More about parameters that can be specified to open PDF files are available here:
    http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/acrobat/pdfs/pdf_open_parameters.pdf
    Although the above link is for a previous version of Acrobat, I could find no evidence to the contrary in the current SDK documentation.

  • EPUB exported from InDesign works on iPad and not on Android tablets

    I've edxported several similar books to EPUB from InDesign CS5, using the same technique each. After exporting from InDesign, there's a lot of tweaking of the HTML code and some changes to the content.opf and toc.ncx, but the finished product for all of the books works fine on iPads but some do not work on Android tablets. There are six separate InDesign documents in each epub book...three small, one large, and then two small. Some of the books work fine on Android tablets, but for some of them, the first three documents show up fine, but when one advances to the large document, the book closes. There's no error message. Any ideas what the problem might be? Are there size limitations for documents on Android machines?

    As you have found out - it doesn't work.

  • Format changing when exporting from InDesign to PDF

    I am using Acrobat 8 version 8.1.2, and InDesign version 5.0.2.
    I am noticing a very specific problem when exporting some files to PDF from InDesign.
    We often have a format where we have a numbered list of right-aligned number, followed by some text, a leader line, and then another number at the end of the line. This is set up with a left indent and a first line left indent (rather than using the numbered list options), and then the necessary tabs later in the lines.
    I am finding since we switched to IDCS3, that when I export to PDF, lines containing this format change in the PDF. The text that appears after the number in the front of the line is pushed over on top of the leader line, leaving a huge white space. On rarer occasions, it will move things in lines that have no indents, but contain tabs that aren't being used.
    I have been able to get the files to export correctly by removing the left indent and first-line left indent and using tabs instead (or by removing unused tabs). But we have hundreds of files set up in this manner so going in and changing how they are all set up is problematic to say the least.
    Is this a known issue? Does anyone know why this might happen and how I can prevent it?

    I haven't tried printing to PDF. I will try that and see what happens. Unfortunetly, where I work we are required to export to PDF rather than print to PDF, so if it works it will only be a clue for me rather than a solution.
    Thanks for the reply. I'll try a cross post to the InDesign forms.
