Smart quotes, M-dash, N-dash, etc. not showing up in pdf

I am using InDesign CS4 on a Mac 10.6.3 and I noticed that when using HelveticaNeuv TT font there are certain type elements that don't show up when I export to pdf. The things that aren't showing up on the pdf are things like quotes, apostrophes, M-dash - and there's probably more that I haven't noticed yet. I have used this font a lot before with my older mac and version CS3 with no problems. Don't have a clue what's going on...I really like this font and it's used extensively in a lot of my older documents so I really need to fix this problem. Thanks for your help!

You might be using the Helvetica Neue on the Mac from your system. That version is 'tweaked' by Apple, and has been known to cause issues before. Try googling for "Helvetica Neue InDesign", there have been questions (and answers) about this font before.

This does not happen in IE, only FireFox. When Yahoo Mail loads it does not "Load" completely. Icons, Flags, Scrollbars, direction arrows, etc. do NOT load. The functions still exist and work, but if I didn't already know where some of them are located it would be impossible to use them because the "visual icons" do not show up.

Custom Image(URL) not showing up in PDF

Hi,
We have created a standard webi-report where a company logo is part of the report header.
We would like to keep the company logo in a database, so we've creáted a simple webapp to retrieve the image from an Oracle database. When we insert the logo into our report we just use the following link as the Image(URL): http://<Servername>/plsqlapp/docs/Company.JPG
The logo now shows up as expected in the report as long as we view the report through InfoView. However, when we export the report as a PDF document, the logo will vanish.
If we use boimg://Company.jpg as the Image(URL) instead, it works OK even when exported to a PDF document.
We would however prefer to keep our images used in reports in a database.

Upon further investigation of the issue, I found that there was a Technical Escalation raised for Enterprise under the Technical Escalation Id 5000072075. However, the product group rejected the TE stating that it is by Design.

Header not showing up in PDF

I put a logo in the header of my form and it is not showing up on the saved PDF ~ any idea why?

XML PO Output for Communication does not show barcode on PDF

Hi,
I am attempting to add a barcode to the PO Output for Communication XSL style sheet. I am doing this by calling 2 RENDERX XSL style sheets, the second containing an SVG template.
I have successfully accomplished this locally on my personal computer using FOP to generate the PDF (barcode appears perfectly). When I transfer the files to Oracle (the new custom PO XSL-FO style sheet in a template, along with 2 new templates for the 2 RenderX XSL stylesheets. The RenderX style sheets appear to be imported at runtime using calls similar to: <xsl:import href="xdo://PO.ALKS_CODE128_BARCODE.en.US/"/>
The PO Output for Communication report runs successfully with no errors or warnings, and all of the output appears EXCEPT for the barcode (remember this is SVG). Same thing happens when I View Document from the PO form.
Why does my SVG barcode not appear on the PO Output for Communication within Oracle, yet the same code runs perectly on my PC. I've looked into the Adobe SVG Viewer plug-in, but I do not have that on my local machine yet the barcode appears fine in the PDF. It seems the PDF should be able to show any image anyway.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am not using a barcode font. I am using RenderX's XSL stylesheets to generate the barcode. As I said, the barcode generate's fine in the PDF on my computer but does not appear in the PDF when the code is moved to Oracle.

Bleed not showing in exported PDF

I'm submitting a postcard design to hotcards.com and am worried because the bleeds that I have are not showing when I create the PDF.
I've included the crop marks when exporting (and checked 'bleed marks'.) Don't know if I should submit with the crop marks, and I'm not seeing the bleed. My color (bleeds) just end at the margins.
Any advice?

First of all, you need to include the bleeds in your InDesign document; 1/8" is pretty standard for bleed in the US, but check with your printer to be sure. Start by including a bleed in your page layout: Document Setup > More Options > Bleed and Slug. Type .125" for all 4 bleeds (if you check the little chain icon on the right, you'll only have to type it once). This will add a red outline outside your page area to show where the bleed should be. Then you'll have to stretch your backgrounds to snap to the outer bleed lines.
When you export the PDF, click "Use Document Bleed Settings" (in the Bleed and Slug section of the dialog box). I also change the marks offset to 1/8" to match, just so they're not too close to the page area. That should give you a good PDF for the printer.

Type not showing when opening pdf in Illustrator

Here's a strange problem that I don't recall having seen before.
I have a pdf file with diagrams of cupboards and tables with measurements. Everything looks o.k.
I open it in Illie (CS3) and everything shows up except the type. It is point type and only the points are there. I can drag over the type where the letters should be and there IS something there (coloured black according to the Color palette) but no recognizeable letters. I tried copying the type from the pdf and pasting into Illie but still no luck. I have the font (Syntax Roman) but the only way I can get it to work properly is to type the text in again manually. Any ideas please?

InDesign created this PDF and made the font a CID Identity-H font (not opentype, but similar in the respect that it has many more characters)
I am not an expert on this topic so you may get a better response reposting this here or in the acrobat forum with a new topic (eg: converting PDF CID fonts to .ai).

Smart quotes not showing up in pdf

I'm having problems with first, my quotes from Word (or like from an email, copied and pasted) are coming in as straight quotes and second, when I go to make a pdf, the "curly" quotes are not even showing up. I am new to CS4 and never had this problem in earlier versions. Everything is at the default setting. Please help, thanks!

Something odd has suddenly happened to my emails. The panel or view to reply, reply all etc has disappeared!
Have not changed anything - what is going on here?

Hi all - my computer froze sometime in the night - i restarted it and now have lost my library in itunes.
It must still be somewhere on the computer i have exactly the same free HD space as before - I also back up to my time capsule.
My question is - how did this happen and how do i get everything back - playlists, etc, as quick and painlessly as possible?

Quotes in a page level item not showing up as " when used in a hyper link

In my app, I need to hyper link to a crystal report application with parameters from my page. I have a page level item that puts my parameter in quotes, but when the item is utilized in the hyperlink, the quotes come across as & q u o t ; (spaces were put in to the post to avoid html conversion) how can my string be used to appear the way I want?

I don't use Crystal Reports, but, in general, you should encode your URL. When you create your link, run the URL through utl_url.escape() first. Put it in your select statement.
E.G.,
select utl_url.escape('http://oracle.com/foo"bar') from dual;
will escape/encode the quotation mark and give you:
http://oracle.com/foo%22bar
This translates the " into a URL-safe escape code, %22, that should (I hope) be understood properly by your Crystal Reports server.

Tables, views, packages, etc. not showing for most users

Started getting blanks this morning when expanding the nodes of most of my local users (cleared filters). Seeing no tables, views, packages. However, if I login sqlplus as that user and select * from tabs, I CAN see all tables are there.
I can use sqldeveloper to view all the SYSTEM user objects and one recent user that I imported (impdp) from a 10g database. However, every other user appears empty in sqldeveloper.
I grant connect, resource to all users since this is just a development database. Also tried granting CREATE SESSION and even ALL PRIVILEGES, no luck. All tried restarting.

self is also facing the same issue. workstation is install WINDOWS 7 Pro and 10g client is not available as of now for Windows 7 Pro so oracle client 11.2.0.1.0 installed. Database pertains to one datacenter is serving as desired but databases lying with remote data center, none of objects are shown even not as SYS also where as sqlplus is showing all objects. tried with TNS option and without TNS as well but objects not listed. don't understand the behavior of SQLDeveloper 2.1.1.64 Build-Main 64.45. for information all DBs are of 10.2.0.4 with mix flavour of non windows o/s.

Word 2007 "Save as Adobe PDF" - Pictures not showing up in PDF

Good Afternoon,
I have run into this error recently when using the "Save as Adobe PDF" to publish Word 2007 report.
Each report has an table - pasted from Excel 2007 "as a picture - when printed". The reports have a ton of other jpg pictures.
After creation, when I open the PDF, some of the tables appear to have become transparent. Where the picture used to be is a selection box, as if there were a picture there, but it's merely blank. All of the photos, frames, and Word-based tables show up. Some of the pasted-from-Excel tables also show up, not these ones.
Is there a reason for this discrepency? Is there a way to resolve the issue? I used the search bar and found nothing that matched my issue. All of my software is up to date.

did you ever solve this issue? I have the same problem and "view large images" is the only answer I can find and it DOES NOT WORK.
I posted the question elsewhere, but nobody has replied. here's my situation:
When creating PDF documents from any software (Illustrator, Corel, InDesign, etc), color objects over 50% of the page size have white fill. If object has an outline, the outline will appear normally, but the fill will be white. I've searched forums everywhere and have found no answer. Most forum topics on this are issue focus on settings in the program that exported the PDF. I am 100% sure this is not an export problem, but is something in Acrobat itself (a missed setting? Corrupt program file?)
To provide the best information, I've done a little scientific research. Here is what I know:
Currently running Acrobat Pro 9.5.5
This is only happening on ONE install of Acrobat 9. Documents display correctly in Reader X and in Acrobat 9 on other machines.
Started happening a few weeks ago, I have no idea what changed.
"Show Large Images" in preferences dialog is checked. Unchecking it and rechecking it does nothing.
Have installed all available updates to the software
I experimented with different object sizes. At 50% of page size, objects appeared normal, at 51% filled object disappears.
Does not affect photos, only affects vector objects.
running this on Windows Vista 64 Bit

Bridge does not show dimensions for .PDF and .AI files

Is there any way to see the dimensions in cm (or inch) for PDF and AI files in Bridge? I'm using Bridge CS5 4.1.0.54 as part of CS5.5 Design Premium, have set the preferences in Bridge to show them, but there are no values in the metadata fields for dimensions in inch/cm. I don't know if this behaviour is normal or if there's something wrong with my installation...

May be 'dimension' is not the right word/translation. In my german version it says 'Abmessungen (in Zoll)' or 'Abmessungen (in cm)', which should mean something like 'dimension' or 'size'. DIN A4, A5, US Letter, Legal etc. pp. in cm or inch.

Button Background images created in Indesign do not show up in PDF on some computers.

I have created buttons that let somone swap one image for another in a PDF in Indesign and the copied and pasted the form fields from the exported PDF to the main PDF document. An example can be seen here: http://lustreproducts.com/PDFs/may11/Round_Worksheet.pdf
The button images for the ends of the handrails seems to work on most computers, however, some people can't see them on their computer for some reason. I thought it may be because they have too old a version of Reader maybe? But the PDF should be compatible with Reader 7. Anyone else know what might be causing this?

Perhaps they are not using Reader at all. Lots of Mac users mistakenly think Preview is capable of displaying complex PDFs and don't bother to download Reader.
