Smart recorder disk thrash

I am in the process of digitising my LP collection using Smart recorder. After about 5 or 6 minutes recording the disk starts thrashing and the recording of that track is spoilt. The thrashing lasts for about 0 seconds. I have a Dell 4700 and initially it had 500MB RAM, I have since added an additional GB taking it up to .5GB RAM. There is over 00GB free disk space and loads of virtual memory. I have checked the Task manager and it is only using about 300MB of RAM any way. The thrashing doesn't happen every time and in most cases I can just re-record the spoiled track and after the recording is segmented I can just substitute the spolied track, but I can't do this when the first track is longer than 5 minutes.
I suspect it may be a limitation in the Smart recorder software.
Does anybody know about this and is there a solution?

I don?t have a problem with disk space, my hard disk is 50 gigabytes with over 00 gigabytes of free space. That?s about 30% utilisation.
I did some investigation using task manager to check on memory usage and to see what processes were running when the disk was thrashing. The process was DFRGNTFS. I then searched the Internet and found this thread
http://www.vmware.com/community/message.jspa?messageID=398955
the last post by Roachware was quite informati've even though my problem only lasted for 0 seconds maximum and it didn?t fully explain what was triggering it. I also found some threads that explain how to disable the de-fragger but I haven?t tried them yet.
I have also been experimenting with recording levels, there is one album that has a ?noise? problem even though the levels don?t go into the red. I recorded the album seven times with the level ranging from 90% down to 30%. Bizarrely, as the levels went down the thrashing problem became less. I tried recording a different album four times with the recording level ranging from 90% down to 30% and the same symptoms manifested. The size of the files for each recorded album were the same, no matter what recording level was used.
Why should recording level affect the de-fragger if the file sizes are the same?

  • Smart Recorder - track splitt

    Hi,
Does anyone know if it is possible to use the track splitting facility that is in the Smart Recorder Wizard to split a previously recorded MP3 file into individual tracks.
I use it successfully for a file recorded by during the wizard session and it is very useful. However I have several recordings that I had made before buying the SB Li've! 24-bit External device that I have now. I would liek to split these files into individual tracks and avoid having to record them all again. Can I?

Can you help me out to resolve it?

I have seen several people report Recovery hanging and not completing when the hdd is smaller than the original. Years ago when hdds were 20-40gb I could understand the problem with running Recovery from disks on a 20gb if the machine came with a 40gb_but I would have thought /hoped that HP would have eliminated that issue with todays huge hdds. From several posts here in the forum, the problem has not gone away.
If you install Linux now booting from Recovery Disks will wipe out Linux,so if you hope to dual-boot it will have to be reinstalled after recovering windows 7.

  • Can't boot into bios due to SMART Hard Disk Error

My hard drive failed and now im getting constant pop ups to replace it
I'm thinking about transfering windows to an external drive until I can replace the internal one but I need access to the bios to set the boot priorty options anytime I use f10 to boot into the bios it's like it's skipped over and gives me the smart hard disk error screen where my only options are to boot into windows or run diagnostics.
I tried running diagnostics but each test resulted in an instant failure.

Yes take out hard drive and connect it to another PC. Get help from your service manual for procedure for taking it out:
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02659236
    Adapter, something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Anker®-Converter-Adapter-Cable-included/dp/B005B3VO24
For configuring boot order, try this:
    http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00364979
Tap f9 key soon after powering on notebook, if the above don't work.

  • HP G62 Notebook has Smart Hard disk error

My HP G62 Notebook PC just stopped in the middle of my doing homework the other day and came up with an error code on the screen. I have went in through the BIOS and ran a hard disk test. It passes the first 2 tests and then fails on the third one.
I have tried to back it up over a month, just in case it was a virus but that doesn't seem to make a difference. Now upon start up it says the following:
    "SMART Hard Disk Error
The SMART Hard disk check has detected an imminent failure. To ensure not data loss, please backup the content immediatly and run the Hard Disk Test in System Diagnostics.
    Hard Disk 1 (301)"
Does this mean my computer is done? Do I need a new hard drive? I'm definetly not the most tech savvy person. I did see another board where they suggested removing the hard drive and then reinstalling it. This doesn't seem to make a difference. HELP!!

    Hi,
The Smart error would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.
If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - you can check your warranty status Here.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.
If you are in another part of the world, start Here.
If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know - include the full Model No. and Product No. of your G62 series notebook - see Here for a further explanation.

  • X-Fi Fatal1ty - Smart Recorder will not work in

I think the 64-bit drivers for this puppy are still buggy. When I try to record my vinyl albums through Smart Record, Wave Studio or even the basic Windows Sound Recorder, I get screeching noise on playback.
Everything appears to record normally, but when you play it back - screeching.
My previous sound card, an Audigy 4, worked perfectly under Windows X64. I'll be returning my X-Fi and getting an Audigy 4 tomorrow.
I really hate to waste time - I wish Creative would have provided better drivers for the X-Fi. I'm very disappointed.
My system has 4 Gig of Ram in Abit Fatalty SLI Mobo, Nforce 4 SLI. I have the very latest bios from Abit, too.

Want to let you all know that I think I solved the problem, or actually, two problems.
Problem - I installed the 64-bit driver, which included the Audio Console. Then, when I installed the applications on the CD that came with the card, I unknowingly installed the Audio Console again, which was a 32-bit version. I took out the card, uninstalled everything, and then reinstalled only the 64-bit Driver/Audio Console which came from Creative's website.
Bottom line - I installed the 32-bit Audio Console on top of the 64-bit Audio Console. Creative should write drivers or give better explanations so regular consumers can avoid this pitfall. I'm a computer tech and figured this out, but most folks wouldn't.
Problem 2 - I can't blame Creative for this one. I turned off my onboard 394 (Firewire) port. I don't use it anyway.
When I did those two things, my issue went away. The X-Fi Fatalty now works perfectly.
Thanks to the two people who responded here. Hope this helps someone else.

  • Sound Blaster Connect: Why no Smart Record

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum. I've just bought a Sound Blaster Connect to convert my audio tapes to MP3. The box and the instructions both say it should include Smart Recorder software to accomplish this task, but I can't find it on the CD. Am?I missing something? Do I need to download something extra? All help appreciated. Scandalxk

I don't think it's wrong forum. I have the same problem. Installing and desinstalling programs from CD, once the smart recorder was installed, another time wasn't. No one knows why. Now the main problem for me is that if I klick on the smart recorder knob, the message "no audio equipment on this computer" appears and the program is aborted.
So I cannot use my Sound Blaster Connect for the only purpose I bought it - for the recording.
If you know how to fix it, please tell me.

  • HP Smart Array Disk Mounting(?) help

I have just installed Solaris 10 (x86) on a HP Proliant DL380 G4, this involved applying the driver updates for the RAID controller to allow the Solaris install to work (there have been lots of posts about the RAID controller driver being required for the install to work)
The machine has two raid controllers the onboard 6i controller and the additional HP 6400 controller we've added to hook up the Smart Array disks
I need to know how to mount or add or configure the disks in the smart array. I think i have the driver installed for the 6400 raid controller but the next step i am not sure of. The BIOS let me configure the discs to be a RAID 5 and I was expecting to see the discs in Solaris.
Is anyone able to offer a suggestion ?
Having a HP server with a Smart Array / Storage Works device should be fairly common but Google hasn't turned up anything useful.
Further information (may or may not be useful).
In the Server BIOS i have the following information for the disk array controller:
    Logical Drive #1 RAID 5 1955.8GB
    Direct Attached Storage
Controller HP Smart Array 6400, Slot 3
The individual disks are (i have 8 in total):
    SCSI Port 1, ID 0
    SCSI Port 1, ID 1
    SCSI Port 1, ID 2
    SCSI Port 1, ID 3
    SCSI Port 1, ID 4
    SCSI Port 1, ID 5
    SCSI Port 1, ID 8
    SCSI Port 2, ID 0
I don't know what happened to SCSI Port 1 ID 6 and 7.
In /dev/dsk/ i have quite a few disks listed but htey don't seem to map onto the 8 disks, or the one disk logical disk i was expecting solaris to see.
I thought my disk would be something like
c1t0d0 - is the disk which Solaris install found (i think)
    c2t0d0 - this is a symbolis link to devices/pci@0,0/pci8086,3599@6/pci8086,329@0/pci1014,la7@2/pciell,409c@4/sd0@0:wd
Is this my second disk ??

There are 2 ways of running a test on your hard drive . One way is through BIOS (F10) and other is through HP System diagnostics(F2). How exactly was test initiated from your end ?
The SMART imminent failure for Hard drive is an indication that your Hard drive is on verge of failure or might fail anytime depending on usage. I would recommend you to backup your files immediately because your hard drive might die at any moment and I'm pretty sure its needs to be replaced.
Kindly check the instructions over here in order to run the test for your hard drive

  • Issue with Smart Recorder

Hi all - sorry if this is the wrong section.
Could someone tell me if there's a built in recording duration limit in Smart Recorder? It won't let me record more than 3 hours and 8 minutes (I need to be able to record a 4 hour DJ set live).
The drive i'm pointing it at has about 120Gb free so it should be ample for 4 hours.
    Any clues??

    Hi,
You might want to switch to the 1st tab ("Record Now") and select WMA format or WAV format with a lower sampling rate / bit rate so that you can have more than 4 hours of recording (WMA format is preferred). Hope this helps.

  • Smart Recorder does not record. Time is not increment

    Hi
I have just purchased a new X-Fi Extreme Music sound card.
I cannot record anything in Smart Recorder. The time display just stays at 00:00:00 when I press the record button. It is not because I enable the wait for sound feature. It just won't start.
What is wrong? Software bug in Smart Recorder? Any other with the same problem?

    Nothing yet I think.
I tried to mail Creative support, but it seems like they have no clue about what is going on.
They keep telling me to try all sort of things, such as new drivers, install in safe mode, anti virus might have messed up the installation, etc...
I have followed their advice, but it does not help.
    I'm stuck
I am just hoping that a newer version at some point will fix the problem.

    Hi,
If you're starting to get Smart warnings, it's probably best to think about replacing the Hard Drive - at the very least, make sure you have a current back-up of all your personal files etc in case the drive fails suddenly.
If you'd like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive, please post back with the full Model No. and Product No. of the notebook ( from the service tag underneath your notebook ) - see Here for a further explanation.
