Smart Sharpen Preview Inaccurate

When I use smart sharpen, the preview box shows the image will be sharper than it actually makes it when commited. Actually, even before it's commited I can see by moving the Sharpen Box over and looking at the image in its main window... I press P to toggle the preview off and can see that there is some effect that will be applied, but not as much as it shows it sharpening in the Sharpen Preview Image.

For a simple image I tested with just now, even one where I duplicated the layer like you have, mine shows pixel-for-pixel accurate between the small preview, the preview on the image, itself, and what gets committed. In other words the small preview matches the preview on the image and the image doesn’t change when I click ok, meaning the preview on the image was accurate.
I wonder if there is something wrong with the video drivers, and turning the Advanced mode on or off in Preferences / Performance might change how things work.
In your situation, does the preview on the image match what gets committed with the smaller preview on the tool being too sharp, or is the preview on image also different from what gets committed?
And are you using PS-CC 14.2.1 and OSX 10.9.2 or something older for either?

Smart Sharpen preview problem

CS4, Mac Pro 2.6 quad, 10.4.11, 5gb RAM, 7300GT video card.
Working with smart sharpen filter, the preview does not update but the file window does. However, achieving the desired results using the file window does not translate to the image after the filter finishes. In fact, it looks as if only a small portion of the filtration has taken effect. Could this be another GPU Open GL problem? Try different settings in smart sharpen, even some very drastic ones, each time the results were much less.

And are you viewing the sharpened file at 100%? No other percentage view will do.

Smart Sharpen and Reduce Noise preview windows are blank

Hello,
I am using Photoshop CS5 64 bit with WIndows 7
Whenever I try to use the Smart Sharpen or Reduce Noise image menu items, the preview window for both
these applications are always blank.
My images are mostly 16 bit with some 8 bit but I always get the same blank preview window
Any help would be appreciated

Always check your LAYERS panel to ensure you've activated the image layer on which the pixels reside, and not an adjustment layer. Also make sure you've clicked on the image if there's a layer mask present, so the filter won't be inadvertntly working on the mask.
Assuming you're not on the wrong layer, have you checked to see whether new drivers are available from the web site of the maker of your video card? Many, many display problems are resolved by updating display drivers.

Photoshop CS4 no display preview for Smart Sharpen after making adjustments

I just upgraded to Photoshop CS4 which seems to work fine except for the preview window in Smart Sharpen and Unsharp Mask. I get a preview display when using the sharping tools after I open a photo but if I make adjustments such as Levels or Curves the preview window is blank. It's recommended to sharpen a photo after all other adjustments and effects are applied. I can't see how sharp I'm making the image and if I'm getting any noise. Adobe said it was a problem with the driver with the graphics card and to call apple for an update. Apple says it doesn't have an update. Does anyone know a work around? Adobe had me throw away preferences and uncheck open GL. Neither worked.

Smart Sharpen not Working in CC 2014

Recently I upgraded from CC to CC 2014. Since then I can't get Smart Sharpen to work. Lens and motion blur don't work at all. Sometimes when I choose Gaussian blur it works other times not.
It's not just me, a friend who has it installed on two computers can't make it work either.
Any ideas?

In order to preview .php pages locally, you need a local testing server (Wamp, Xampp, Mamp). Is yours properly defined in DW CC? See screenshots.

I have CS 4. Though the program is mostly working fine, the 'smart sharpen' is not. Is there a way to get this running again?

What exactly is not working in Smart Sharpen? Are you seeing the Preview? Have you adjusted sliders to extreme to see if any effect? Are you viewing Preview pane at 100%? Have you gone Select>Deselect to make sure you don't have some pixels selected somewhere? A screenshot may be helpful to show what is not working.

Smart sharpen filter in CS5 not working

My smart sharpen filter is no longer working It seems to be doing it's job when I have a preview dialog box open, but as soon as I ok the changes the original image appears as if nothing happend. I've tried different files and it the same story: nicely sharpened image in the preview box and than nothing changes. And it used to work very well in the past. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks.

When you are zoomed out, many pixels are averaged into a single display pixel. For performance reasons, the sharpening is previewed on that downsampeld version of the image. When you apply the filter, it applies to the full resolution version of the image, which then gets downsampled again for your zoomed out preview.
So, let's say you had a grid of black and white pixels. Zoomed out, it looks like gray. Sharpening would appear to have an effect depending on the zoom level, but would never have any effect on the base level.
And no, there is no way to keep performance reasonable and give you an accurate preview of applying the filter to the full resolution image.

PS CS3 Smart Sharpen very slow for LCE

PS CS3 Smart Sharpen is very slow to create a preview and then be applied to the image, at least when using a low amount and high radius, eg 20, 50, for local contrast enhancement (LCE). I'm now running Vista 64, but I think it happened even under XP 32.
Is this a common issue or is there some way of speeding things up with Smart Sharpen?

A solution!
It turns out the problem in my case was in fact Suitcase. Previously, I'd tried turning it off, but that didn't fix the problem, so this time, I uninstalled it completely and the problem disappeared. I then began re-adding it (installed 15.0.1, upgraded it, etc.) and the problem resurfaced with the addition of the Photoshop-specific plugin. Deleting that plugin solved the problem. So it seems that "disabling" Suitcase by stopping the TypeCore doesn't seem to actually disable all of the tentacles it sticks into your system.

(After a restart, I also had to delete the font cache, as described here http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-fonts-photoshop-cs5.html but your mileage may vary.)
Alternately, if you don't want to delete the plugin, disabling it from within Photoshop seems to work as well. To do that, go to File > Automate > Extensis, click Preferences..., then deselect Enable Suitcase Fusion 4 Auto-Activation.
Fortunately, the plugin doesn't seem necessary at all to use the the core functionality of Suitcase (enabling and disabling fonts) in Photoshop. I didn't even know what these app-specific plugins did until researching this problem, and I still don't quite understand the point of them. I guess they allow you to let the apps for which they're installed do a little bit more of their own management (enable a font via Suitcase that isn't enabled system-wide), but that seems like more control than I need--if I'm enabling a font, I want all my software to be able to use it.
Anyway, the problem seems to be completely solved on my system now, though I just did all this, so more testing over the next few days is required. I'll post here if any issues crop up. I'm interested in hearing if this solves it for anyone else as well.

How do I fix problem with Smart Sharpen & CR as filter

Smart Sharpen doesn't apply (or apply completely). Photoshop CC on Mac OSX 10.7.5
new merged layer > Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen > adjust sliders > toggle Preview > click OK (progress bar) > nothing or 50% applied
1. Smart Sharpen (SS) shows changes from sliders in SS dialog box AND on underlaying image in PS but checking and unchecking the Preview box only toggles the image in PS, the SS dialog box does not change.
2. After clicking 'OK' SS does not seem to apply at normal ranges but when the radius is cranked up to super ugly it appears to apply at about 50% (Opacity and Fill are at 100%).
Related Problem:
After using 'Camera Raw as a filter' on a new merged layer, then adding a layer mask, and then painting with a brush at 100% opacity and Flow, it appears that only about 50% opacity is applied to the mask from the brush.

I did a lot of such hymn things in the past, but I was alway working on the scans in Photoshop, like adjusting, retouching spots and cropping. And I was always seperating those images to be more flexible so I never run into such a problem.
I am always scanning in a higher quality level than I would need, I scan it in color, this allows me to eliminate paper color easily, even if I need 1-bit images at the end, I do it in color, so I can also turn the image.
I did once run into a similar problem with a scan I have got from a copier-scanner machine (it was not a song). But saving as PSD resolved my problem.
So I would suggest: Open your files in Photoshop, resave them as PSD files and use those instead. If you use 1-bit images (which is fine for this type of images) you should use a resolution equal to the printer's resolution.

New Smart sharpen slow updates

The new Smart Sharpen (Photoshop CC) is very nice especially the possibility of enlarging the preview window. However the update when adjusting the sliders is quiet slow despite the fact that I have a rather powerful configuration.
Anybody experiences the same lag or is the problem at my end?

I think in this case it goes beyond NR and into something being slightly wrong with event handling, causing the display to possibly not update right away or even at all until you interact with it. I've even seen the sharpening preview applied to the main Photoshop editing preview, while not being applied to the preview in the Smart Sharpen dialog.
I'm confident they'll fix this for the next point release.
It's kind of a shame that the UI has a bit of a gotcha, because the actual image results of the CC 14.0 rendition of the Smart Sharpen filter are quite superb.

Could not complete the smart sharpen command because there is not enough memory (RAM)

Hi,
I'm trying to complete the AutoSharpen (Filter->Sharpen->AutoSharpen) feature but, i'm getting the following error when i click on "Ok".
Error in Dialogue Box "Could not complete the smart sharpen command because there is not enough memory (RAM)".
Request the SME's and Adobe community team members to help me overcome this step to proceed further.
I'm using a 32 Bit Win7 OS and have a 4GB RAM on board.

As Curt says, Photoshop got more hungry for RAM from CS4, and 32bit systems just weren't cutting it, but there was a trick we used to use to squeeze a bigger slice of the available installed 4Gb
Run the Command Prompt as Administrator, and type:
"bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 3072" (I can't remember whether the quote marks are needed or not.)
That used to work for me with XP, and it is _supposed_ to work with Windows 7, but I know it doesn't always.
If it doesn't work, or has unwanted consequences, turn it off with:
"bcdedit /deletevalue IncreaseUserVa"
If you want to research it before trying, seach for 'Windows 7 3Gb switch'.

Problems with smart sharpening in Photoshop CC 14.2

When I open the smart sharpening filter, the hand symbol pops up and Photoshop doesn't do anything anymore. With Ctrl - Alt - Delete I have to shut down the program. All other filters work correctly. I also removed and installed Photoshop CC again, but the problems are still the same.
Can someone advise?

Smart Sharpen was one of the things tweaked in 14.2 so it may have been to do with your Preferences > Performance settings. (In case it goes wrong again)

PS CS5 - Where are my Smart Sharpen settings?

I'm using PS CS5 and I know I had previously saved several customized smart sharpen settings. They're now MIA (they don't appear as options, just the default is there in the drop down), and I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what PS has done with them.
I'm currently using Win 7 Pro x64 if it makes any differece. I've looked in the usual area (C:\user....\ps cs5\presets) but there's nothing there.
Any suggestions would be apreciated. Short of that, it looks like I'll have to create a dummy image and save the settings along with that, which would be crummy, to say the least.

Do this:
Save a set of Smart Sharpen settings as XYZZY or some unique name not likely to match any other file on your hard drive.
Search the hard drive for that filename - for example, open a CMD window and type: DIR C:\XYZZY.* /S
If this turns up the "usual place" and your other settings aren't there, something has deleted them or the "usual place" isn't where it once was. Have you changed logins (i.e. are you logging into Windows with the same account you used when you saved those settings)?

Photoshop CS6 on W7 platform crashing recently using smart sharpen filter.

Been working on a project moving files from Lightroom 4 to Photoshop CS6 for final edits and experiencing recent files crashing PS CS6 when using the smart sharpen filter. I've processed hundreds of files in CS6 and never had this issue till lately. All other filters work fine, including other sharpen options, it's just the smart sharpen interface. I over-installed/re-installed Photoshop CS6 thinking a driver might have corrupted for that filter, then installed all available upgrades but the problem persists. I can't figure it out, and it's a problem - I use smart sharpen a lot for final output. Am I overlooking something simple? Or, do I need to just uninstall PS CS6 and do a total re-install or is there another option? Thanks.

Photoshop CC 2014 Smart Sharpen is freezing Photoshop

I am running Windows 7 and I have never had this problem with CS 5. But every time I convert to a smart object and hit Smart Sharpen, my Photoshop freezes and I have to force stop the program. Can anybody help me resolve my problem, so I can sharpen without the program freezing?

Since Smart Sharpen now uses the GPU the suspicion falls on your display driver.
Since you have a Windows system you can visit the web site of the maker of your video card and download their latest display driver release for your hardware and OS version.
