SMART tests PASS, but my Spin-up Retry Count is in the yellow

I've had my computer for almost three years. AppleCare is on the verge of expiring. I just toook my MacBook in for a trackpad replacement.
I use TechTools Pro for my hardware testing. My computer passes all of its tests, but I notice that the test for the Spin-Up Retry Count on the SMART status of my harddrive is not totally in the red, but in the yellow, and even then its closer to green than to red. My computer still works great. It does slow down and Spinning-wheel-of-death alot when I'm doing alot of high-CPU load tasks, but for the most part, it still works great. Is this Spin-Up Retry Count something I should be concerned with? My other tests report no bad sectors, bad blocks, or anything else wrong.

Back up all data, then uninstall the worthless, time-wasting "TechTool" product according to the developer's instructions. Reboot. Problem solved.
Oh, that made my day. I actually did that, when I found the Unix tool smartmontools. Set it to perform a full check weekly, and email me if SMART check failed. No use seeing that stuff Techtools shows you.

    Ok, Hi. I'll first admit this is my first post so go easy on me!
    I just bought a used iBook G3 and it was working fine for a while until about a month ago when all kinds of weird things stared happening. Some of which those problems I solved from reading previous topics from these forums - but anyways, I'll skip all my other problems and get right to my current one.
    First off here is the complete specs:
    12.1" iBook G3 "dual USB series"
    500MHz PPC processor
    128+256MB ram = 384MB RAM
    15GB hard drive (NOW 160GB HARD DRIVE!)
    No Airport Card (NOW ONE HAS BEEN ADDED!)
    Multiple OS's - OS9 and 10.1 were included (have original disks)
    I also have a set of 10.4 Tiger CD-ROM disks
    Anyways, here is basically what is happening. I bought an Airport card off eBay for my iBook. I installed it about a week ago. I booted into 10.4 Tiger and it did not detect the card. Tried to do the manual setup with the wizard and it said there was no card attached. I went into the system profiler and is said No info available under the airport section. I then booted to my "apple hardware test disk" and ran the full/extended test. It passed everything (including the Airport card) so I know that is not the problem. I then booted into OS X 10.1 and lone behold the card is detected and is working without any fooling around with! Instant wireless internet! So I know that the card is working, but I want to use it in Tiger as 10.1 is almost worthless. So I boot into Tiger again knowing that the card is working, and Tiger still does not recognize it! I even booted into OS 9 and it detected the card (although it was having some connection problems, but at least I know that it IS detecting it.)
    Here is what I tried (so you can cross these suggestions off your list! lol)
    I've deleted the Airport "ktext" files, etc. (can't remember the actual names of the files, but I've cleared all of those caches and still no luck.)
    I've zapped PRAM
    I rest NVRAM
    I rest the PMU.
    I did a Arcive and install of 10.4
    ...All of which did not help. Again, the card worked in 10.1, but 10.4 is completely blind and can't find it!
    Now we are caught up to today. I was having many other odd problems and it all lead to my hard drive probably being bad. So toady I finally bit the bullet and bought a new hard drive from Best Buy. It took me forever to install it, but I did it, and it works! Now I have 160GB (make that only 128GB detected) of space. I partitioned it 4 ways as well:
    "Tiger" - 80GB
    "Other OS" - 30GB
    "Extra Space 1" - 10GB
    "Extra Space 2" - 8GB
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx- 128GB Total
    So now that I have a new hard drive (that I was told would fix all of my problems because my old one was "bad" I thought I would have it working today, but no. So I put in the brand new drive, partitioned it, booted off my Tiger disk, installed it on the 80GB partition. The install went fine. So I now have 10.4 on the new drive. Seems to be a lot faster then my old drive! I did the combo updater (which I downloaded on my iMac and transfered to a flash drive and loaded on to my iBook) Ran the updater, and now it is running 10.4.11! But then I realized, the Airport card is STILL not detected in Tiger!!! - I thought the new hard drive would solve all my problems as I was staring from scratch, but no, there is still a problem!
    I ran the Apple hardware test disk again, full test, and it said my Airport card is still fine. I didn't reinstall 10.1 yet (nor did I want to, I was hoping Tiger would work for what I wanted) but it seems now that I might have to go back and install 10.1 again. I don't know what it will prove - other then it will work again, but I don't want to use 10.1 so I'm not going to bother doing all that again.
    Anyways, after looking into this further, I brought up the system boot log (of tiger) and found these lines interesting, and hopefully useful to you guys:

    it then lists the eithernet address and then ramblers on about other nonsense. If anyone needs the other "stuff" i'll try and save the whole log file and attach it here if anyone needs it.
    So could anyone please help? It seems as if i've done everything, and still can not get an answer on why it is doing this, and how to fix it!

    Hey, just wanted to post an update to let everyone know what I ended up doing.
    Bottom line with the airport card I had is that is was "bad" - well only kind of. I got an email from a guy from a local PC repair shop. He told me he had just gotten one of those cards in and had it for sale for only $25. So I was chatting with this guy and he said it would be alright if I brought my iBook right in his shop, swap the cards and try it before I buy it. So I did so. Very nice guy and we swapped out the cards no problem. Right away it recognized his card and worked! I then downloaded the Airport update and ran it. (remember before, when I tried to update my card, after it restarted it was no longer recognized.) So we did the update with HIS card in and after it restarted, it STILL worked! It also added WPA support as well! We then booted into to Tiger (remember the old card wasn't recognized at all in tiger) and it ALSO worked in Tiger! I also had WPA support right away! So I bought the card and was all happy that it was all working again! I then figured out what the problem was with the old one.
    My original card was one of the "original" originals. Then, Apple "changed" the original cards and replaced ones with "128bit" support. (this is all before the extreme cards) I then found out that the newer original cards (the one the guy just sold me) are worth MORE because these are the cards that are compatible with the newer update (128bit WEP, and WPA) The cards looked exactly the same, but the newer card has "128 Bit" printed on the bottom of the card.
    SO, it ended up, I was "asking too much" out of the card I had - as the card I had did not support what I was trying for it to do. Where as the newer card I bought IS compatible with the update, and worked like a piece of cake. So all in all, the first card I had isn't "dead" it just wasn't working with what I wanted it to. So I'm going to end up selling it. Hopefully craigslist, but I will get more for it on eBay. so that is what I'm going to do. I'll just make sure to tell people this "story" so they don't try and do the same thing I did. But for someone with an even older laptop, an older OS, or an older router, this card will work just fine for them.
    So thats basically it! Looks like I got everything working!

  • Tests pass, but iPhone won't autodiscover Exchange 2010.

    I have some Exchange 2007 and one Exchange 2010 I am responsible for. As far as I can tell I have ActiveSync and AutoDiscover setup properly. Running the tests here confirms this. With an iPhone I am able to do the "one step autodiscovery" on the Exchange 2007 servers but the Exchange 2010 does the "two step setup" where it fails to get the server name and it has to be put in by hand.
    I'm curious if something was changed in 2010 AutoDiscover that breaks iPhone (3G 3.1.2). More likely I have got something misconfigured.
    All the DNS names point to the same server, the SSL certificate supports all the names.

    Check the security tab of the users in AD and see if inherit permissions is checked.
    had a similar problem with my first migration to Exchange 2010 and it was down to a security permission on the Active Directory User account.
    In Active Directory Users and Computers right click on the user and select properties then under the security tab and advanced make sure the box is checked for inheritable permissions.

    Demazter is right for existing users that have been upgraded from previous versions of Exchange.  If you create a new user in Exchange 2010 IPhone sync will work without additional steps.  
    When I went to check the security tab in AD, it was not visible.  I had to click the View menu then place a check beside Advanced Features.
    When I checked the inheritable box, IPhone Sync worked for that existing user.
    Note, I checked other users in my AD with mailboxes and some of them had this already checked.  The only two that didn't have this box checked were the users that were using the IPhone syncing and were upgraded from Exchange 2007.

    I see by your post that when you try to send a fax you are getting a comm error, the fax test all passed. I will do my best to help you.
    Make sure the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet. (don't use a power hub or a surge protector) This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
    I have provided a document to go through the steps to see if that will resolve the issue.
    Cannot Send or Receive Faxes.

    Can you receive a fax?
    What kind of line do you have? (Analogue, DSL, Cable Modem)
    Where is the fax cable connected to? (modem, wall jack)
    Are you using a filter?
    Are you using the 2 wire fax cable?
    Do you have distinctive ring set up on the line?
    Is there any voice mail set up?
    Do you have a answering machine? (Where is it connected to)
    Is there a phone also connected the printer?

    1. I am getting correct termocouple readings when using the virtual channel test panel, but not when using labView software created by the DAQ wizards. why and how to solve it?
    2. I am unable to switch on 6V relay using DAQ card's output voltage but able to do so using other voltage supply. How to solve this?

    In answer to #2, the DAQ card's analog and digital outputs cannot drive
    enough current to turn on a relay. What you need to do is use the output to
    drive a MSOFET or transistor that will drive the relay. You can use the 5V
    computer supply that is available on the DAQ card connector as the power
    supply that the MOSFET or transistor use to turn the relay on.

    2. If the jta.retry.count is executed then can I see 3 instances on the EM console or any other entry in the Log file.
    3. where can i configure jca.retry.maxretries property. this property is not available on emconsole.

    Here the retry count by default is set to unlimited. Is this the recommended one? In normal db adapter options i see the retry count as '4'
    the property value seen in composite.xml is shown below
    <property name="jca.retry.count" type="xs:int" many="false" override="may">2147483647</property>
    Will this lead to any performance issues? Or what could be the correct retry count value?

    We have used the polling options using Logical delete vastly in our project and never faced any performance issues with respect to this property value being set to 'unlimited'.
    I believe there should not be any performance issues with respect to the 'Delete the row(s) that were read' option as well.
    According Oracle documentation:
    In the Auto-Retries section, specify the value for auto-retry incase of time out. In case of a connection related fault, the Invoke activity can be automatically retried a limited number of times. You can specify the following values in the fields in this section:
    To retry indefinitely, type unlimited in the Attempts field.
    Interval is the delay between retries.
    Backoff Factor: x allows you to wait for increasing periods of time between retries. 9 attempts with a starting interval of 1 and a back off of 2 leads to retries after 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, and 256 (28) seconds.

  • Hard drive i/o error, spinning beachballs. PASSES Smart test, but fails two specific parameters:

    I'm on a Macbook from early 2007.
    First off, I'm fully aware that my HD is probably on its last legs and I have two gigantic TB external HDs on which there are multiple images of the entire drive, so data loss is not currently a problem for me. I've also just finished college assignments for the summer so I can afford to mess around with this a bit before taking the plunge and replacing it.
    What intrigues me is this. The machine has been extremely slow for a long time. Recently I disabled swapping and the speed rocketed, presumably due to the HD being utilized less during usage. Now the downside to disabling swapping is that when Safari Web Content gets out of control as it always eventually does, you can have a full on system hang which requires a forced shutdown through the power button. So it's very possible that the issues I'm currently experiencing are to do with the machine being improperly shut down one too many times and somehow damaging the drive itself.
    But anyway, this is the interesting aspect. Using TTP I ran a SMART test on the internal HD from one of the bootable partitions on one of the external ones, and to my astonishment, it actually PASSES the smart test. The only two parameters which fail are the following:
    Raw Read Error Rate
    Write Error Count

    Now to give you an example of the kind of issues I'm having, in order to take that screenshot I used "Grab". When searching for Grab in spotlight it gave me results from the internal HD and from all the various backup drives I have attached. I opened the internal copy and one from a backup partition on another drive (neither of which currently booted from). The one from the backup bounced and opened. The one from internal bounced about 15 times, the spotlight bar hung with a spinning beacball, and I ended up force quitting because I got sick of waiting for it. That's the major symptom of the issue I'm having.
    Now here's the reason I'm posting. As I say I know this drive is about to go so there's no need to lecture me about that, I can't replace it immediately but plan to in the very near future when I have a chance. My question is this. Those two specific failed SMART results, what exactly would cause them in terms of HD problems? Bearing in mind that it passes every single other SMART parameter, am I looking at unmapped bad blocks, a physical problem with the head, a loose wire, a bad motor, or what? I'm just wondering specifically what might be wrong with the drive, out of pure curiosity more so than anything else. The fact that most parameters pass suggests to me that it's one very specific malfunction as opposed to the drive generally imploding.
    A surface scan from TTP crashed, but not before giving me about 30 "Used block is not a file" messages.
    Finally, to temporarily use this drive, what's the procedure? If it's unmapped bad blocks, to I erase and install, or do I go into the whole "zero all data, then reformat" option? I have a backup image taken last night from the external drive which I can restore to the internal any time I want, and as I say with so many backups and so few deadlines ahead of me I don't mind messing around a bit and experimenting.
    So if it IS a bad block issue, what does one do to force it to map them?

    Had a feeling. As I say it's already fully backed up and ATM I'm running the machine off a partition on the external. But as I say, I'm curious as to what's actually wrong with it - what type of damage / failure would cause those specific smart parameters to fail but not the rest? The motor, the head, the disk surface, what?

  • HP Pavilion hard drive response time is very slow but tests pass (evenutally)

    I have owned a HP Pavilion M1199a originally running Windows XP, but has been running Windows Vista 32-bit for the last 3 years or more.
    The PC started to lock up for 30 seconds or more (2 weeks ago), with the disk light constantly on then go again for no apparent reason. These lock ups have become more frequent and for longer durations. I removed anti-virus software, and a few other applications/services but generally this computer is fairly clean as I use it as a media center PC. 
    I have tried checking the disk (SATA) for errors, and it passes although the tests take a lot longer than they should. The resource monitor shows no excess CPU usage and there is plenty of memory available. The disk monitor shows response times of 5000-20000 ms.
    What is the best way to proceed from here? Is there a SATA controller or motherboard (ASUS PTGD1-LA) test? Should I buy another SATA drive and try that? I suspect that it is either the drive, drive controller and/or the motherboard that is failing but I don't know how to isolate the problem. The computer hardware configuration has remained the same for years.
    The OS has the automatic updates enabled and I uninstalled the recent ones in case they were somehow causing an issue.

     In Vista type temp in the Search programs and files box and double click on the temp files icon that appears above. Delete all the files in the folder that you can. It is safe as they are exactly what they are called and that is temporary files. If you haven't done this ever or in quite a while there should be a noticeable increase in the operating system's response time.

  • TS-OPUI shows Passed but there are fail-tests - why?

    i am using TS4.2.1 and LV8.6 in WIndowsXP. There i use the default TS-OPUI.
    In the TS-OPUI there is in the left side a Execution-list with a final-result Passed/Failed and a color green/red.
    When i click on a execution then it shows me on the right side the report of this execution.
    Now i have the problem that TS shows a final result of PASSED but there are some fail-tests in the sequence that are shown in the report.
    How is this possible?

    I am getting nearer...
    When the error occurs then Teststand shows me the RunTimeError-occured-popup (screenshot).
    When selecting here: runCleanup -> then the result goes on Pass
    When selecting here: ignore -> then the result goes on Fail.
    I am sure that it is somewhere in the model.
    Because when using the default-model (and not my custom model as above) then the result is going correct on Error when selecting runCleanup.
    The question is nonly: Where is this set?

  • MPR testing is passed, but failed when upload Result Package to verify.

    I am attempting to certify our application using MPR-Test-Tool v4.6 for Windows Server 2012 R2.
    The MPR tool shows the testing Pass, and generated a .zip Result Package.
    But it's failed when uploads the .zip Result Package to verify in MPR web-site "Test My Apps" page, both Silver and Gold level are failed.
    In the "Test My Apps" page, I couldn't find the reason, error message or some hint for the failure.
    I am appreciate any help,
