Smart to downgrade?

Hey,
Ive been reading a lot about 1.1 not working out so great and freezing - on my ipod it has. i just bought a 60GB the other day... so it came with 1.1. from reading a lot of people have gone back to 1.0 is that a smart move... i mean if it is i will but are there any major setbacks?

The most major thing is that you do probably do not have 1.0.
It may be on the iPod already (turn it on and go to Settings -> About) or on the CD, in which case you won't have to worry about "going back" to anything.
Besides, this seems to be a problem on the Windows side, not the Mac side.

  • Can you downgrade from smart phone to basic phone?

I added two lines on my account for my parents. They do not however use smart phones. But I got their lines with the iPhone 5 and switched it to my line. They ordered flip phones from ebay, however when the 5 came in they didn't have them available yet to I just put my iPhone 4 on the lines. Now the flip phones are in and I'm getting an error when I go to activate device. Its before I even put in the MEID number, saying can not process at this time. Is there a limit of times you can switch phones within 24 hours? And is it even possible to downgrade from smart phone to basic line?
    Thank you!

Yes you can. if you are on the share everything plan then the cost per phone will go from $40/month (smartphone) to $30/month (feature phone). You will still have the data plan at the cost it is now since that is shared between all phones on the plan.  If you have a grandfathered tier plan you should be able to drop the $30/month data plan for their specific line.
Since they ordered the phones off ebay, you will want to make sure those phones will work on VZW. If they do then switching to the flip phones should be pretty simple. you will likely have to call VZW to get everything set up.

  • Hi all, just downloaded a security update on my new iphone 4S.  The phone may be more secure but all the Aps icons have been downgraded in quality. Why would this be and how can I get smart looking aps back? Regards Steve

Hi all, just downloaded a security update on my new iphone 4S.  The phone may be more secure but all the Aps icons have been downgraded in art quality why would this be.  Before the download the phone looked the business definitely high end quality now it looks like a second rate cheapo.  Please advise how to get the smart Aps icons back. Hi KiltedTim, as a newbie to Apple, iphones and forums I would appreciate an explanation of the 'Trolls and Mods' comments on your posting.  I presume the Mods are Apple sentinels but am I really a Troll just because I made a criticism of the new iOS version (even though I did not know I was actually doing that).  Am I a Troll to you because you personally disapprove of criticism of the new iOS or is Troll used by the community to describe anyone who speaks up if they are not happy about a change.  Please understand that by asking these questions it is not my intention to be confrontational (I’ve been called far worse than a Troll over the years) but as I’m new to the group an insight into the politics may be beneficial.  I’m an Old **** who isn’t technically gifted and may need the help of this group in the future so I don’t want to stand on anyone’s toes. Best regards Suttertonsteve.

  • Downgrading from a smart phone to a basic phone question

If I were to do that, does that mean I wouldn't have to pay the monthly data plan every month on my phone.

That's correct.  It should drop off automatically, but I'd check via MyVerizon to ensure that it does (and if it doesn't, you can cancel it yourself via MyVerizon or call Customer Service).  Keep in mind that if you currently have unlimited data or a double-the-data promotion, you'll lose it forever when switching to a basic phone.

  • RV180 (wired only) problems with firmware 1.0.4.14, fails to boot correctly + LAN ports power off during boot (downgrading to 1.0.3.10 = fine again).

    Hi All,
A few months ago when 1.0.4.14 was released I was quick to update to this version from 1.0.3.10 but very quickly ran into issues.
Bit of background info...  I am not doing anything complex with this box, basic IP4 network over all LAN ports, no VLANs, firewall enabled and allowing 2 port access rules to a static IP address.  Any static IPs are assigned manual at host level but all other devices receive DHCP IP addresses.  I don’t host VPN on this RV180 but I do with another.  Routing VPN has no issues. WAN is connected to another switch provided by my ISP who provides DHCP IP Address with their DNS etc.  Only LAN ports 1 and 2 are connected, port 1 to my Wireless AP (AP mode passing all requests to the RV180, DHCP etc.), port 2 connects to a 8 port Smart Switch (but all 'Smart' features are currently not in use, so basic switching only).  All other settings on the RV180 are on recommended defaults.
Everything is working fine on 1.0.3.10 but I have all kinds of issues after updating to 1.0.4.14.  Here are the actions and experiences I had...
    1) Backup my RV180 config to txt file.
    2) Navigate to the firmware upgrade page and follow steps to complete the upgrade process from 1.0.3.10 to 1.0.4.14.  *router does the normal process of upgrading*
    3) RV180 reboots to complete but doesn’t come back up even after waiting 5-10 mins.   LAN ports enable during boot up (link lights on) but after about 2mins turn off (no link lights).  WAN light is on alongside the Power Light.
    4) Power cycle even with rest... Same results.
    5) Reset the RV180 to default settings.  I can sometimes get the unit to boot up and the LAN remains active and powered up.  The web UI is VERY slow compared with 1.0.3.10.  Internet sometimes works and sometimes doesn't (I would expect it all work without issue on default settings).
    6) I repeat this a few times, various resets, powered off waiting periods, etc. but I always have issues.  I did manage to get some log file information and the Kernel appears in the Alert, Error and also the Warning logs (please see attached files).
    7) I gave up at this point.  No major issues like this reported on the internet from a few google searches etc.  So I then reset to defaults (1.0.4.14), downgrade to 1.0.3.10 and finally reset to defaults again + restore backup config settings (with some manual changes).
The router has remained like this and seem to be working fine, but I would like any security improvements from 1.0.4.14 firmware on my device.
Anyone able to help, have the same issue or can advise me in any other ways?
I see 1.0.3.10 isn’t displayed as a firmware download on the standard support page for the RV180 now.  Only 1.0.2.6 and 1.0.4.14.  Do I need to downgrade again to 1.0.2.6 before upgrading to the latest version?
    Regards,
    ~FAZ~

    Hi,
I recently bought a RV180 router and immediately I encountered the same problem; practically I am not able to access the web GUI.
The PC is directly connected to the router, nothing else is connected; the TCP/IP configuration is as follows:
    PC: 192.168.1.100
    RV180: 192.168.1.1
    GATEWAY: 192.168.1.1
    SUBNET MASK: 255.255.255.0
Once the router is turned on, the power LED flashes fastly, the Ethernet LED is on but after few minutes it disappears and the PC detects a disconnection of the Ethernet cable.
The router is not pingable and, as I said, the web interface is not reachable.
I have tried to power cycle the router, to reset it (pressing the reset button for more than 3 second and for more than one minute), to access the rescue mode and download a new firmware through TFTP, but nothing worked.
Few times, after many boot and reset trials,I was able to access the web interface and in one of these occasions I updated the firmware to 1.0.4.14 but once the router is powered off the problem arises again at the next power on.
I have not tried yet to downgrade to an older firmware version.
Can you suggest any solution? thank you.

  • Smart Playlists no longer working on my 4G iPod

I have a 20GB 4G Mono iPod that is running the latest firmware version (3.1.1) and I have several Smart Playlists I use frequently with it.
Before I upgraded to iTunes 7 last week these playlists would dynamically update on the iPod itself without the need for me to synchronize with iTunes (this was also a bug introduced in firmware 3.1 and corrected in 3.1.1). Now the "smart" playlists on the iPod act just like static playlists: if I play a song that is supposed to be removed from the playlist once the song finishes, it doesn't until I sync with iTunes.
Is anybody else experiencing this issue?
I have tried restoring my iPod just in case.

Well, 7.0.1 doesn't fix this for me, but downgrading to 6.0.5 did. I followed the first four steps here:
    http://macslash.org/comments.pl?sid=6335&cid=112858
Then, while keeping the "iTunes Music Library.xml" file in ~/Music/iTunes, I made a new "iTunes Library" file (instructions at the bottom of this link):
    http://www.mani.de/en/software/macosx/ivolume/faq.html
Then installed 6.0.5 and dragged the xml file onto the new program file to import. The new groupings (movies, podcasts, etc.) turn into playlists at the bottom, but can be easily deleted.
This will allow downgrade while keeping play count, ratings, etc. intact; I did lose artwork for all the songs for which I had downloaded the art from iTunes store, and iTunes is recopying those songs to the iPod, but I'd rather have the playlists update on the iPod than have the artwork.

  • Downgrading from Lion 10.7.5 to Snow Leopard 10.6 w/o Time Machine

I've been trying to solve this issue for a bit, and would appreciate any fresh perspectives on the issue.
I recently purchased a 2006 Mac Pro 1.1. It has a dual 2.66Ghz Xeon processor. I'm fairly sure nothing has been customized in the machine hardware-wise, and that it is in the original configuration apple sold it with in 2006.
The machine arrived with the Lion 10.7.5 OS on it, which was incompatible with some of the software plug-ins I use for editing audio, so I decided to re-install Snow Leopard 10.6. I inserted my install DVD like I would normally, and was greeted with the error message "OSX cannot be installed on this computer, please use version 23.1.1".
I checked out the forums, and seeing that this was a common problem (with what seemed like an easy fix), proceeded to try and install anyway. I booted from the DVD by holding "C" on start-up. After booting and asking what i wanted to use as my language, the error message "Mac OSX cannot be installed on this computer" was displayed. Thinking this was another glitch, I clicked "restore from back-up, then managed to use Disk Utility to wipe my HD and zero out the contents. I reformatted my HD to Mac OS Extended Journaled, Re-partitioned it, and then reset my NV or Pram (Command+option+P+R) until i heard the start-up noise twice.
Next, I restarted the computer, booted it from the disk again, and crossed my fingers it would let me install. No luck.
I don't have a second mac pro to clone, or a Time Machine back-up from this machine (as it is brand new to me). Furthermore, it's previous owner left me with no restore disks, or usb sticks to even put Lion back on (which i don't want to do anyway, but would at least make the machine functional until i can correctly install 10.6SL).
I do have a spare 2009 imac to work with in the meantime, with Snow Leopard, though I'm assuming attempting to clone that drive would screw with the drivers and firmware in the Mac Pro. Are there any tricks to re-install my OS without using a Time Machine back-up or clone? I have the DVD, my machine just doesn't seem to want to install from it. The nearest repair shop is several hours away.
I'm at a loss for what to try next. Any ideas?

The following will only work on a Mac that is capable of being booted by a retail Snow Leopard DVD. Fortunately, you can do the following on your model should you prefer. As an alternative you could simply create a second partition on the hard drive and install a fresh copy of Snow Leopard without having to erase the drive.
Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
      1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
          Utilities menu.
      2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART
info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion/Mountain Lion files.

  • How do I downgrade from Mavericks to Snow Leopard and save my new pages files?

Unfortunately, the Mavericks system isn't working for me. It's way too slow, has issues with Finder and so on. Basically it's just a pain in my *** and my
beloved Mac Book Unibody (2010) just can't handle it! After searching for hours online for a solution, I'd love to get back to the good old times.
I read that I can downgrade to Snow Leopard with my latest TM backup, using the recovery mode. Problem is that I "upgraded" sometime in October, so I have accumulated a bunch of new files. Being a teacher, I have tons of documents and Apple unfortunately changed all the old '09 files into '13 ones. Will they still work under the new old system, or do I have to find some way to export them into '09 files?
Is it fine to use the TM backup, or is it better to use ds store's method to recover the system?
    Thanks

I backed up the system just prior to upgrading.

I have Windows 8.1 Pro and with incompatible hardware must downgrade to Windows 7 Pro, where my work station hardware is supported.
    PROBLEMS:

    Installation media is blocked.
Windows 8 cannot read download ISO from Microsoft, extracted to DVD or to USB.
    Installation media is blocked.
Machine BIOS will not read Windows 7 installation media with Windows 8 installed.
BIOS will read Windows 7 installation media once Windows 7 has moved Windows 8 to Windows_Old.
Download ISO from Microsoft to run Windows 7 installer from Windows 8 desktop - cannot complete Windows 7 setup.
When ISO setup select Region screen opens, mouse and keyboard both freeze.
    SOLUTION (S)?
Windows 8 Pro downgrade to Windows 7 Pro early last year, licenses had to be reset for downgrade to occur.
Answer Desk junior personal support this year has no idea what to do.
At least with ISO, Windows 8 File Explorer can read DVD title, "Windows 7 OS".
But cannot open folder to view contents - File Explorer crashes.
With original Windows 7 Setup disk, Windows 8 finds no DVD information.
Does this mean the Microsoft ISO is not the full/legitimate version?
Which would explain the installer's hang!

It has been suggested that CSM on, Secure Boot off, and BIOS Crtc electrical current flush should help.
    No help here.
I get the feeling that in addition to Licensing, very sensitive adjustments of machine settings are required - any ideas?

  • Smart Objects

I often work with stock photos, and they are never in the correct orientation for the front of the books I work on. Generally, my procedure has been to drop the stock photo into a 300 ppi photoshop doc that is the exact size that I need for the front of the book. I then convert the stock photo to a smart object and size it up or down as needed. (This way I won't lose any data by sizing the image down.) Then if necessary, I do any color correction or photoshop work that might be needed. I then import the Layered tif into InDesign and when I have finalized the design, I usually flatten the tif and update it in InDesign. Is this a good way to work?
    Thanks for the help.

Lets clear some of the fog first. When you place a Smart Object or SO, you are placing an image or graphic that is bound by the resolution of the document you are working in currently. In other words, yes you can retain resolution if the SO is physically or resolution wise larger, but its output is still governed by your working documents resolution.
Since you are interpolating a SO once placed in your working or parent document, you are losing a bit of image fidelity as expected. Smart Objects have a lot of misconceptions about them and resolution is one issue. You are gaining editing flexibility with a SO in a passive manner, but not gaining anything in image quality because of stuff stated above.
My ideology is to keep things simple stupid. Work images at output size except when you are dealing with billboard size images. Place images at 100% into a page layout application. Create the mechanical at 100% of the output. Try not to apply compression to graphics and images over and over along with placing images at very high or very low percentages in a page layout. The applications have to up or down sample depending upon the output file(s)
    ie. Postscript or PDF generation.
Also - In Design's optomization routines - those of which are less then "ALL" resample everything in the document so be careful. You may throw bits away when generating your output file and this will cause a noticeable downgrade to image quality.
You can also place PSD files in In Design and I find that the best workflow so far to date. Not optimal to me, but this is where we are at this stage of the game. There is no real need to generate an additional output file or flat file because within every PSD file, there is a flat version and you can have mutiple flat versions in a PSD for version priority selection in In Design. I tend not to use this feature because I feel it creates more problems then not - on the user end. It was supposed to help, but I just can't support Adobe's logic for this feature. Just because you can, does not mean you should.
The other side of the coin says is does not matter because quality is an after thought for most..

    my mac specs
    macbook pro 13" early 2011
    My time machine
i have a backup with mountain lion, and i also have a backup from snow leopard,(my goal is to restore my latest backup from mountain lion to snow leopard)
i have backed up my files using time machine AND justcloud
My question is how, i do not want to lose any data, also is there any thing i need to be aware during this process

Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • Smart playlists not updating live after 3.0 upgrade

I have a smart playlist: 'songs I've not played in a while'. Before the upgrade, if i had 100 songs in the playlist and played one, the playlist would update and the next time I'd access it I'd have 99 songs in it. however, after upgrading the playlist is not updating itself. It will stay at 100 songs and the only way to make it update itself is to sync with itunes. The placounts etc are all being remembered, but my playlist is no longer updating by itself.
Help! What can I do to fix this?

First, downgrading the firmware is not something that Apple will support, so if something does go wrong (not likely, but remotely possible) you could end up with a device that does not work.
Second, in order to downgrade to an earlier version of firmware, you have to already have it on your computer. If you never did a firmware update prior to installing 3.0, then you don't have a 2.x firmware on your computer to install. While you might be able to find a copy of 2.x, there have been reports of problems with the copies people are finding. But if you ever did a firmware update, say from 2.2 to 2.2.1 then you would have 2.2.1 on your computer already. If that's the case, then follow these instructions:
1- Connect your Touch to your computer and put it into "DFU mode" (Google that for instructions). Getting into DFU mode is a little tricky to get the timing just right, so pay attention to the instructions and what to look and listen for.
2- iTunes will tell you that the Touch needs to be restored to factory conditions (this is expected). Instead of clicking the Restore button, hold down the SHIFT key as you click Restore (on a Mac I think it's Option-Restore). You'll see a navigation window for you to locate the firmware. Navigate your way to where the firmware is stored on your computer, which on a PC is:
    C:\Documents and Settings\(account name)\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates
(on a Mac these files are located at: ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates)
Select the proper .ipsw file for your device. For 2.2.1 the file is "iPod2,12.2.1_5H11aRestore.ipsw"
3- Your Touch will go through the Restore process. When you get to the point where you choose to re-load your last backup or set up the Touch as a new iPod, choose the new iPod selection since the backup contains 3.0-specific information that may not work with earlier firmware.
4- You'll then have to re-load your Touch's contents, including music, video, web links, settings preferences, etc.

  • Bug: iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5 podcast smart playlist sort order and how to fix.

There seems to be a bug in iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5 involving the sort order of a smart playlist of podcasts. I created such a playlist and sorted by release date on iTunes but I noticed it had a different sort order on the iPod Touch.
After playing around with it a bit I found that the only way to preserve the sort order that I have in iTunes on the iPod Touch is to uncheck "Live Updating" in the smart playlist.

Confirming this incredibly annoying bug.  Basic list sorting not working... real bottom shelf work apple.
workaround update:  limit to must be turned on, set it to an absurdly high number if you don't want to actually limit the playlist, then one of the sortby options in that submenu will work.   The live update checkbox is irrelevant from experimentation.
This workaround does NOT fix the fundamental problem: sort order from itunes in smart playlists is not being synced and preserved in ios5 devices.
This is the latest in a long string of debacles which is making me seriously consider swapping to debian stable. (snow leopard to lion was a severe downgrade in performance for anyone doing heavy multitasking.. scheduling is FUBAR... when a command option escape beachballs on a brand new core 17 machine, your OS has serious problems with nice levels)

  • Smart list doesn't work

    Hi
in iTunes there is a smart playlist called Top 25 Most Played.
This one has always worked with me, until i got the 3.0 update for my iPod Touch.
Now in iTunes you see the songs you're supossed to see and everything is perfect.
But once i sync it with my Touch it shows, on my Touch, a complete other list of songs that are nor the same as one my pc in the same list. I believe these songs are some of the least played songs but this isn't at all right.
I tried to make another list with oter specifications and rules but he does the exact same thing and shows the same songs as in the other lists. these songs are the least played.
My other Smart Playlists, Recently Added and Recently played, do work the exact same as before; fine.
I hope to get an answer soon, I really liked my Top 25...
My excuses if I made any language faults.

I still have done a feedback several times and I searched several times for apps.
I can get back the old player if I downgrade to iOS 6.4. The image I have.
But that is not what I want, because I will loose the ability to synchronize with iTunes.
iOS6 is not longer supported by Apple.
Is there an app which can write back the rating to the iTunes library?
I have seen a lot of really good apps but none of them could write back the rating.
Or is there a way to hack the interface of the iTunes player on iPhone to face only buttons or slider needed?
