Smart Update iPhoto Library on Macbook
Dears,
I've two Macs (one iMac and one Macbook). I will import my photos and modify them in my iMac. But I want to make a copy on my Macbook while I am away from my iMac (Just like sync the photos to iPod). I won't do any modifications on the copy of Macbook. Can I do that? Thanks.
Regards,
ghostwolf:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What you'll need to do is use a backup application like LaCie's free SilverKeeper or Synk Standard to backup the iMac library to your MB library. It would be a one way backup. After the first backup any incremental backups would be very fast as either application will only copy those new and/or changed files. Connect the to Mac via a LAN so you have access to both libraries.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

i need help! i am trying to update iphoto on my macbook pro that i had bought from someone else. although i am signed into my account when trying to update it is asking me for the previous owners account details and it wont let me change it to my details how can i solve this problem please.
thank you
Jan RobinsonThat's because the Mac, OS X and the iLife apps that came preinstalled on the Mac all belong to the previous owner. The previous owner needs to call Apple care and have their Apple ID disassociated from the Mac. Then the hard drive needs to be totally erased and OS X and the iLife apps reinstalled using OS X Recovery.

Unable to update iPhoto on new Macbook Pro
I have a new MacBook pro and AppStore indicates that there is an update for iPhoto. When I try to update iPhoto I get an error stating "to update this application sign in with the account you used to purchase it".
I did not register the first time I booted the MacBook so I am assuming that it must not know what Apple ID to use for the update, but I do have my apple id associated with my user account. How do I get around this issue so I can update iPhoto?
Thanks,
BobApple support suggested the following (which didn't work for me, but I'm sharing as they might work for others - I'll keep the post updated when I hear back, again):
1) Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
2) Enter your Apple ID and password.
3) Click Purchases.
4) If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them.
5) Click Install to compete installation of your applications.
If this does not work, follow the instructions below and then repeat the steps above to accept the iLife apps again.
1) Close the Mac App Store.
2) In Finder, click on the Go menu.
2) Click Go to Folder.
3) Enter ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore/
4) Drag adoption.plist to the Trash.
5) Relaunch the Mac App Store.
You should then be prompted to accept the apps for your current account.
If you are not prompted to accept the apps when you sign back in to the Mac App store and click on purchases, please contact us back. -
Trying to update iPhoto library and sync
I have two MacBooks: 1 is running OSX 10.6.8 with iPhoto 8.1.2, and the other is running OSX 10.5.8 with iPhoto 7.1.5. I had about 22 gigs of pictures on each computer, so I recently combined them on an external hard drive using iPhoto Library Manager.
I am simply trying to find a way to store the pictures on a hard drive and access it on either computer, but I am unable to do so. If I open the library on iPhoto 8.1.2, it tells me "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto" but I don't want to do that because then I will be unable to open the pictures on my other computer. If I try to open the library on iPhoto 7.1.5, it tells me "you can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."
I have tried updating, but Software Update does not tell me I need any new software, and when I tried to download iPhoto 8.1.2, it told me my computer didn't need the upgrade. What should I do?You need to have the same version of iPhoto on both machines. That means updating the v7 to a v8 (or, in marketing terms, you'll need to buy and iLife 09 disk somewhere and install from that. Try Amazon or Ebay.)

494 com.apple.iPhotoI posted this on another thread, but it appears the workaround should work in your case also. Try this...
From Finder, hold down the option key on your keyboard and click on the Go menu at the top of the screen
Select Library from the drop down menu
Then navigate to Application Support > iLifeAssetManagement > assets
Right click on the 'sub' folder and choose Compress
Drag the resulting zip file to your Desktop (as a backup)
Go to your System Preferences and choose iCloud
Turn OFF the iCloud Photos option
Go back to Library > Application Support and DELETE the iLifeAssetManagement folder
Now, in System Preferences, turn the iCloud Photos option ON
iPhoto should now be able to launch. Give it enough time to re-download your Photo Stream content. Unzip the sub folder on your desktop and drag that into iPhoto if you are missing any of your My Photo Stream photos (more than 30 days old). -

SamTo move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
If you're moving to Lightroom:
You need to export the images from iPhoto to the Finder, then import them to your Lightroom Catalogue.

I have a simple question to you guys (tried to sort it out with Apple tech support but no luck there!)
How can I set up iPhoto in a way that I can have access to the same files from iPhoto on MacBook and from iPhoto app on iPad? I do not wish to sync files as this will create a copy of a file and also when for example you do editing of an image on Mac you want that to automatecly reflect on a file being viewed later on on iPad (and the other way around) without the need of a sync. option
I tested this with photo stream but the problem there is that in order to make any changes to an image you HAVE to do it in the library folder you can not do it in the photostream i.e you took a pix on your iPhone, - photostream pushed it to your iPad and to your Mac, - you've desided to let's say to crop the image on Mac then you've closed that image. When then you open the same image on your iPad (or iPhone) the image is not cropped, why? becouse you've edited an image inside the iPhoto library on the Mac and didn't sync it with iPad.
So it would be great if iPhone and Mac worked with the same library - save space and cleaner workflow! And again
there is no solution today
You can not - there is no commonality between iPhoto on the Mac and on the iPad except the name
You can sync - you can use PhotoStream - you can not share a library - and IOS devices can not access external hard drives and if they could they can not read the contents of the iPhoto library since there is no commonality between iPhoto on the Mac and on the iPad except the nameYou can put your iPhoto library on an external drive if you wish as long as the volmne it is on is formattted Mac OS extended (journaled) - but that does not change the fact that neither the iPad nor the iPhone can access it since there is no commonality between iPhoto on the Mac and on the iPad except the nameIt really is extremely simple - you can not do it today

Updating iPhoto Library fails to complete in iPhoto '08
I'm upgrading my mother's eMac from OS10.2 to OS10.5 (and iPhoto from 'really ancient, perhaps '04 if not earlier' to '08). The OS 10.5 upgrade appears to work '100%' but the iPhoto '08 hangs while attempting to Upgrade the photo library. The upgrade process takes about two hours to process the images, with the progress bar consistently moving across the screen. Then, with a small sliver of progress to go (and the message saying '5 minutes' (or '4 minutes') remaining on the progress bar), all apparent Upgrade progress stops. I've let the process continue for 12+ hours w/o any additional progress. Had to force quit iPhoto. Each restart of iPhoto starts the same process (and hang) -- I've attempted it three times so far (different OS/iPhoto patches). All software patches/updates are up to date as of 11/15.
As far as I know, the original iPhoto library was working fine before I started the upgrade.
Any ideas? As a possibility, I'm thinking of trying to 'import' all the photos from a backup, but I'd lose any albums &etc. Anybody have any better ideas? Thanks.NThorne:
Try the following: download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. Then try converting the library again. Do you have a backup copy of the library?
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
Sharing iPhoto library between MacBooks
I have bulk of my photos stored in Macbook #1. Recently I have loaded photos onto Macbook #2. How do I get photos from #2 transferred to #1 so that all photos are stored on the drive of #1? I want to do this so that I can managed all the photos in iPhoto albums and folders system.
You have to first import them into iphoto on system #1 and if the iphoto option to copy them to the iphoto library is still checked those pictures will all be copied to system #1.
Then on system #2 you have to point iphoto to use the iphoto library on system #1. You do that by having the systems networked over your LAN (they need to be able to see and talk/communicate, file share, with each other over your LAN) and when starting iphoto on system #2 hold down the option key and a dialog box will come up asking you which iphoto library you want to use. You have to browse the LAN to system #1 and select the iphoto library in your username pictures folder.
But what will happen is if on system #2 you start iphoto without first having system #1 on or without system #2 being able to access system #1 iphoto will then create a default library with no picture in it or use the original iphoto library on system #2. And if that happens then you need to point it back to the library on system #1. -
Unable to update iPhoto in my MacBook
Hi Friends,
My MacBookPro was previously used by a friend of mine and after I started using it I used to store my photos in iPhoto. Recently received an update for iPhoto and when tried it asks my the old user account password. So now I'm clear that iPhoto was installed using the old account where I used to store my pics.
Can anyone tell me if my pics were secured or the previous guy have the access to it?Hello Terence,
Thanks for your reply.
So if iPhoto is installed through some other account in my Mac and I'm using it the other person can't access my iPhoto library...right?
I don't want to give anyone access to my library or system hard drive, So can you please let me know how to check what has been shared with others from a mac. (also the hard drive)
As this is my Mac which I've bought but for 1st 10 days one of my friend used it using his apple ID
So I want my Mac fully secured from now onwards.
Regards,

Transfer iphoto library from MacBook to iMac
I need to know the best way to move my iphoto library from my MacBook to my iMac. I have over 4000 pictures on my MacBook, and I tried to upload them to MobileMe but it takes forever the way I am doing it. (I am probably not doing it correctly, I have to click on and select each jpeg file to upload it.) I am getting very frustrated! I am sure there is an easier way to do it, I just don't know how. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Updated iphoto library does not import to iphoto 9.6?
Hello,
I recently updated to Yosemite on my MBP and I'm having trouble uploading my iphoto library to the new iphoto 9.6. I have my iphoto library on an external hard drive and I did install and run the iphoto upgrader programand it says that my iphoto library has been updated. I tried holding down alt/option key while I open iphoto to select my iphoto library and still no photos load. The image below is what my iphoto looks like. I hope I didn't lose any photos.. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
SaraiPhoto version 9.6

VERIFY your library prior to update: iPhoto Library Manager
I am a believer. Please, verify your iPhoto library prior to updating. In fact, verify it every few months. I did this with my iPhoto 5 Libraries prior to updating and I'm so happy I'm buying a SECOND license to IPLM just to say thanks. [1]
How do you verify? You register iPhoto Library Manager ($20) and you use it to verify your library.
But, you say, IPLM is just used to manage multiple libraries. There are free apps to do that, iPhoto 6 can handle 250,000 images (given enough machine power), iP6 can option-click load separate Libraries anyway.
All right. Except IPLM is the most perversely unmarketed software in existence. The library manager features are free. They are nice, but not essential.
What you get for $20 is the barely mentioned capability to combine (merge, import) Libraries or portions of Libraries (images and albums) with much of the metadata preserved (titles, comments, keywords(!), ratings, roll data, and album membership).
But, you say, I don't need to merge Libraries. I have one Library, my partner(s) and children use the one Library, I don't have a desktop/laptop Library. Ahh, but you do need to verify.
How do you verify? You tell IPLM to create a new Library and import all the images from your existing Library. You won't KEEP the new Library. You do this to test for problems.
If there are no error messages, no glitches, matching image counts, etc -- you're fine. Otherwise, sort this out BEFORE you update.
I have done this with two libraries of about 3000 images each. In each case IPLM/iPhoto identified ONE corrupted JPEG [2]. I was able to restore from old CD archives.
Now I feel confident in the integrity of my iPhoto Libraries. I will be using IPLM to verify them every few months from now on.
Highly recommended. And no, I'm not associated with them in any way.
[1] In my case I have 3 iP5 Libraries and I want ONE iP6 Library on my iMac -- I decided to do the merge prior to going to iP 6 because IPLM has been used for over a year for iP 5 merges, so it's more tested that way.
[2] What happens is iPhoto reports it couldn't import an image. On examination in an image editor the JPEG is corrupted. When I went to backups and the original Library I confirmed the corruption. Don't try to open these images in iP 5 -- they will cause iP 5 to hang with a spinning pizza of death. Yes, that's very bad programming. Preview manages them properly. In both cases I was able to get an original good image from old CDs and archives -- but I backup more than 99% of the world. I think these images were corrupted by older/flakier versions of OS X and iPhoto. I have a personal evidence-free belief that the pre-journaled OS X file system was not reliable.
G5 iMac 20 Mac OS X (10.4.4) G3 iBookOops. Well, I still think IPLM is a very good way to test for Library problems, but I would strenously warn against using it to merge iPhoto 5 Libraries prior to running iPhoto 6.
For more details see my blog:

The only safe way to merge iPhoto Libraries appears to be to buy Aperture. -
Trouble updating iPhoto library??
Hi everyone,
I have a new 13" MBP (Mavericks, i7, 16 GB, 256 GB) and I can't seem to update iPhoto. It keeps telling me my library needs to be updated, despite the fact that I have only new photos on my machine.
I've downloaded the updater, installed it, and I still get the same message every time I start iPhoto. Then the updater starts to download iPhoto's update again (now for the third time). I had a MyBook Live (with my old library) on my network, but I've since removed it to see if that was the problem. Still get the same results.
Anyone have any ideas what's going on here?
Thanks, in advance....I'm afraid that if I try to revert to iPhoto 4.0 I won't be able to view
the older photos
My point was that iPhoto does nothing to the images to make them less viewable in another version. The warning has to do with the database structure. If you change the name of your iPhoto Library folder, it will force iPhoto to let you create a new library on the next launch. If worse came to worse, you could then quit iPhoto, drag your old iPhoto Library folder into the new one, and force iPhoto to rebuild (just don't expect any of your keyword or album assignments to survive).
Have you attempted to just rebuild the existing library database? I suspect it has corruption that's causing the hang you've observed. Again, you might lose some keyword or album information, but only as much as is already corrupt anyway. -
Transferring iPhoto Library from MacBook Pro to iMac
I am trying to transfer my iPhoto library from my MacBook Pro to my iMac. My software is up to date on both computers. I put my MacBook Pro into firewire mode and tranferred over the iPhoto Library package file. I put it directly into my iPhoto library folder. I double clicked on the file and iPhoto opened, but it said that the file can not be read. Is this because on my laptop I have iPhoto 7.1.5 and on my desktop I have 6.0.6? I have also migrated from the iMac to the MacBook Pro a few years ago, could that be causing a problem? I called Apple about it and they said there is no reason this should not be working.
Is this because on my laptop I have iPhoto 7.1.5 and on my desktop I have 6.0.6?
This is exactly why. iPhoto 6 cannot read the iPhoto 7 Library. No version of iPhoto can read a later version's Library. The app is backward compatible, not forward compatible.
