SmartDisk FireLite not mounting

Hi,
I got a SmartDisk FireLite several months ago for backing up my PowerBook G4. I followed the instructions that came with the external hard drive and am using SuperDuper for all my backups. Today I tried updating my backup (using smartcopy in superduper) but while I had my back turned, there was an error in copying (not a file, but some kind of cache settings) and also an error that I had disconnected my device without properly shutting it down. I did no such thing, I didn't touch anything! Now the external hard disk does not show up when plugged into my laptop. No icon, nothing in the disk utility. Even after shutting down, disconnecting, rebooting and reconnecting (through firewire). Did it just die?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Welcome kayperbeats,
You are in the wrong forum for the PowerBook G4. Like the original poster was advised, you need to post in one of these areas:
http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=120
Choose one of the first three areas shown based on your screen size. That's where people with the same model as yours hang out. Also, never be afraid to start a new thread; some people skip over older threads that have been inactive for a while, like this one.

  • Smartdisk Firelite Won't Mount

My 40GB Smartdisk Firelite won't mount on my iMac. It did at first but now it will not. I see the Smartdisk in the system profiler.
I am using the ac adaptor in case the USB port cannot supply enough power.
    Any suggestions?

Well I called Apple support because I also tried a thumb drive and had the same problem!
Apple had me shut down my computer, wait 1 minute, unplug the USB cable and then restart the computer. After the computer restarts, plug the cable back in and sure enough the drive mounted.
Well, I ejected the drive and unplugged the cable and tried mounting it again and it worked. THEN the next day I tried again and it wouldn't mount so I did the whole shut down process again. Never mounted!
I do not have this problem with printers, scanners, cameras only storage devices.
So, then I tried the USB port on another computer and sharing the drive as a network device and I can see it just fine.
I also tried a new Airport Extreme Basestation and I could connect to the drive but when I opened it and went to add a new folder, everything disappeared. After panicking for a few seconds, I unplugged it and took it to a PC and everything was there, including the new folder I created.
So for now I guess I will just leave it connected to the PC and access via the network.
That is a poor solution though. I should be able to connect directly to the iMacs USB.

  • Firelite Firewire external not mounting

I am running OS 10.4.7 and my external hard drive will not mount. I went back to the install CD and tried that but it says that it needs a system folder in order to complete the installation. Where can I find this sort of folder? Do I need to download any new software updates or any drivers?
    Help please!!!

Here's the strange thing.  Boot up Mavericks....not mountable. Not visible in Disk Utility.
Boot up Snow Leopard.  It mounts and (obviously) visible in Disk Utility.
I've tried a slightly different MyBook and that works fine and so it looks like some WD problem perhaps?

  • SmartDisk Firelite USB External HD Problems

    Hi All
I have a Powerbook G4 1.67, 2Gb Ram, with USB2.0. I am having external USB HD problems. I have a couple of external HDs, both are the smaller laptop external HDs - and one a brand new SmartDisk Firelite USB2. I used to be able to use these with just the USB cable - however this has been hit and miss lately. The drives seems to power up, but never mounts. Bother HDs work great on my iMac so it is not the drives. I am thinking this is a hardware problem. Can anyone confirm that they can user external USB HDs getting power from the USB cable only on the Powerbook G4 1.67.
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
If you do a search, you'll find that many people have issues powering external drives from the Powerbook USB ports. One vendor even provided a dual USB cable to plug into both USB ports as a way around it. One solution is to use an external power supply with the external hard drives, the other is to use a firewire connection, if the external hard drive offers that, or move the drive into a firewire enclosure.
If you haven't already, you might try resetting the power mangement unit (PMU), which may help. Follow directions at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449

  • All Shared Volumes Do Not Mount

I have setup personal sharing across a wireless network and three Mac laptops. They all connect, but all the volumes from one Powerbook (a Smartdisk 250Gb Crossfire drive used to store music and photos) do not mount. The other Smartdisk Firelite shows up across the network. Problems printing, but that's probably a different question.

Hmmm - on my iMac i get an icon on my desktop - a picture of a drive with 3 people holding hands on it. It goes right beside my time machine, and external hdd icons...
The air doesn't get anything new on the desktop even after it mounts it in the device ...
attaching an external drive brings up a desktop icon on the Air.
I don't mean the login Guest account. When you log into a remote computer, if you do not click, "Connect as" and login with a regular account you default to a guest-like account.
If that is the case, click "disconnect" in Finder and then "Connect as" You should get a popup login window for the other computer. Otherwise you have limited privileges on the remote machine.

  • External Firewire drive not Mounting/Appearing!

I have a White macbook core duo and when I plug in the External Firewire Drive it doesn't appear anymore! The Drive draws power from the computer still yet the computer cannot detect the drive. I addition the when i ran Disk Utility the program did not load completely till i removed the firewire drive. I have a SmartDisk "FireLite" FireWire Drive (40gb.) Help PLEASE!!!!

I had this problem too with my G5 (PPC) and brand new Mac Book.
Both of my computers were given the same local subnet address. To change this go to System Preferences > Sharing > Computer Name, you'll see an "Edit" button, click on it and change the name or add a "2" to the end of the name before ".local"
I guess what is happening is both computers are using the same local subnet and your macbook isn't being recognized.
Mine works fine now, hope this has helped you!

  • Problems with SmartDisk Firelite 80gb and Mac Mini

I purchased a SmartDisk Firelite 80gb hard drive to use to dump documents/itunes library onto to free up room on my mini itself. Thing is I work in an MAC/XP enviroment and I would like to be able to go between the both with no problem. The thing is I don't want to use the FAT file system. I would like to use a more secure format. Thing is what is a format the both can read? .. and How can obtain this? I'm not sure if i can partition this particular drive, that is the problem.
    Please help !!!!
    -thank you .. brian

    Hi Brian,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I believe only FAT32 (MSDOS) are the only Mac OS X and XP compatible volume format. Yes, you can partition your hard drive; you should look at Partitioning a hard disk. You may want to look at Mac OSX Hints: Create HFS+ and FAT32 partitions on one external drive.. Your hard drive should be in FAT32 already, so you shouldn't have to reformat it.

  • SmartDisk FireLite vs. LaCie Mobile Hard Drive

So I'm looking to invest in an external hard drive because my Home folder has now reached the point where it'll take 6 DVDs to back things up, but I'd like to hear from folks what their experiences are with the two drives I've put on my short list (probably the 40GB models, my computer's specs are below):
SmartDisk's FireLite (thoughts about USB vs. FireWire?)
LaCie's Mobile Hard Drive (can do both USB or FireWire)
    Thanks!

    Hey Starman:
I know I"m on dangerous ground that's why I'm trying to do something today or tomorrow. Looked at LaCie, but they are backlogged until the end of the month at least, per their e-mail this morning. The Apple Store here in KC has only one mobile, SmartDisk FireLite FireWire Drive, in various GB. It's that or very large GB desktops by LaCie. Can't really spend more than $150.00 so again that's a limit.
I did some checking last night and if I move photos, music and documents over to a mobile. That's only a bit over 6GB so not enough really, but a start. I'd get about another 1GB if I combine my 2 users accounts on the iBook. Never thought 40GB wouldn't be enough.
What got me into trouble is that I upgraded to Tiger in Dec which took space. Then on Tuesday I installed iLife06 which took way more than I thought it would. That pushed me under 4GB. So I deperately starting dumping photos and documents that I didn't need any longer. Iv gotten up to 5.85GB under this user name. Slowly it will increase.
Question is now what mobile HD to buy. Any help is greatly appreciated. BTW, do you live in Hawaii????? I'll be moving there soon

  • External HD image not mounted

I recently disconnected my ext HD (unknowingly) improperly. Now the HD image does not mount and the ext HD lights are blinking. System profile: Firewire reads it as "unknown device". It is a SmartDisk CrossFire product-company just sold and I cannot find manufacturer support.
Am I SOL or is there a way to recover data?
Tried suggestions of unplugging and restarting - not successful.
    Thanks for any help.

"Can you further explain your second idea."
As already suggested, if you have access to another Mac with a FireWire port, you could determine if the problem is with your iMac's FireWire bus, or the drive itself. When you purchased the drive, was it and is it still formatted as a FAT-32 or NTFS volume for PCs, or did you reformat it as a Mac OS Extended volume? If it's still formatted for use with PCs, that provides more options for you, in terms of being able to test it on a PC or Mac.
If the drive has a badly corrupted directory, transferring it to another enclosure won't solve the problem or recover your files. For data recovery, I'd recommend Prosoft Engineering's "Data Rescue." If the problem is strictly with the enclosure's bridge board, the only definitive way to confirm that would be to install another hard drive in it, and see if it's recognized by Disk Utility or mounts on the desktop. If a different hard drive is recognized, then the enclosure and its bridge board are good, and the hard drive itself is probably at fault. If a different hard drive produces the same results as the original drive that shipped in the enclosure, then the enclosure's bridge board may be damaged.
You could open the external case and transfer the hard drive to a new case. You need to know whether your existing FireWire drive has a 3.5" drive or a 2.5" laptop drive, as the data connection is different. Once you confirm what you have, you should check out Other World Computing and other online sources for a compatible FireWire enclosure. For a standard 3.5" ATA hard drive, OWC carries several external FireWire enclosures, such as this one by Macally, and their own line - the Neptune and the Mercury Elite. I'd be willing to spend a little more and go with the Mercury Elite, because I think it has a better design.

  • External hard drive not mounting after Leopard install

Installation seemed to go ok, but when I switched on my Maxtor One Touch II drive nothing happened. Doesn't appear in Disk Utility but I can see that it is attached when I look at System Profiler. Any ideas what to try next?

After giving up on the upgrade of leopard I decided to do a clean install (to get rid of all the junk) My Lacie 800 and 400 fire wire drives mounted with no problem. It turns out my seagate fw 400 drive daisy chained off my would not mount and cause the other drives not to respond in the finder till I removed the Seagate drive and then the other two drives worked fine. I daisy chained my Firelite 400 and it mounted fine and its being used for time machine. So far haven't been able to solved this problem, the Lacie and Firelites work fine.

  • External Hard drive will not mount on desktop

I have a 17" Powerbook G4 that has replaced a broken iBook G4. I've been using a Western Digital MyBook Pro Edition as a secondary drive for my multimedia as well as my iTunes Library. It worked fine on the old iBook.
When I plug it into the Powerbook, using either USB2 or Firewire 800, it will not mount to the desktop. It DOES however appear in the System Profiler as "External HD Button and Lights". The drive is formatted for FAT32 and works fine on my Windows XP desktop machine, so I know the drive functions mechanically. A different hard drive, a Maxtor mounts to the desktop fine using USB2, so it isn't a bus issue.
This is driving me nuts. I LOVE this computer, but I have WAY more invested in music than the cost of the computer.
    Thanks in advance.

No way around this. Your phone has to be restored using a computer running iTunes. Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

  • Hard Drive not mounting on start up, or not mounting at all.

Recently, as some of you may know, I've had hard drive problems. I didn't get it fixed, but the problems came and went and I didn't have time to send it away.
But 2 weeks ago, before I went on holiday, I ran TechTool Deluxe which came with my 3 year Apple Care. It ran, found errors on the drive (something like -38 or -58 errors), so I started repair. It was after 7 hours that I held down the power button, because it just wasn't going anywhere. It had been on the same step and task for 7 hours and kept giving me every now and then the message of "Working...". But that screwed the drive more, as when I turn it on, I get the message stating to restart.
I'e tried getting at the files using this PowerBook and FireWire, using all the correct techniques, but the drive wouldnt even mount on here. Disk Utility could not mount it either.
The files, Im sure, are ok as TechTool gave me a number of the total files on the drive, which is correct. But I just cannot gain access to them.
    Please help, thanks,
    (it's a first gen iMac G5 btw)

  • Upgrade to Yosemite, iPhoto won't open and NTFS-3G could not mount error with new external HD

    Help!
I just did a software update to get OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 on my MacBook Pro.
Now iPhoto won't open and I get this error:
"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable....Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup."
So I do this and try to repair the database as suggested and I get another error:
"iPhoto will open as soon as the iPhoto library is available. Time Machine might be backing it up."
But it's not - no external hard drive is connected.
I'm terrified I can't get access to my photos (and I admit I haven't backed up with Time Machine for over a year - my mistake that I won't make again).
So I bought a brand new external hard drive (seagate for mac and pc, 2TB) so I could save only my photos to the hard drive (because I googled and read you can manually save your photos to disk by dragging and dropping the photo library onto the external hard drive).
But I can't even get the hard drive to work....I get this error
    "NTFS-3G could not mount /dev/disk2s1
at /Volumes/Seagate Backup Plus Drive because the following problem occurred:
/Library/Filesystems/fusefs.fs/Support/fusefs.kext failed to load - (libkern/kext) link error; check the system/kernel logs for errors or try kextutil(8).
the MacFUSE file system is not available (71)"
I google the issue again and it says to uninstall NTFS-3G but I actually think I just deleted it a long ago without uninstalling it properly??  I don't know....
    (a)  how do i fix iphoto
    (b)  how do i get external hard drives to work with this OS (I've read lots of posts and don't really understand the advice)
    (c)  how do i get all my photos onto the hard drive safely so I can import them onto a PC
Any assistance would be magic for this little lady!

    (c)  how do i get all my photos onto the hard drive safely so I can import them onto a PC
First see if you can reformat the EHD to MS-DOS FAT with Disk Utility.  If you can
open iPhoto and select all of the Events in the Events mode. Use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option and export to the EHD with these settings:
Select the destination for the export to be the EHD or a folder on the EHD.  This process will create a folder for each Event in your library with the same name as the Event and contain the original image files.  The EHD will be useable by a PC and the photos will be available also.
