Smartphone Talk Free Promotion

I am currently under a Family Plan, and recently I switched my phone to an HTC Touch from my Samsung i760. I switched back (the Touch doesn't have WIFI) and I noticed a bit of information on the activation page.
" If you make certain changes to your service, your Smartphone Talk Free promotion will be removed. If your plan includes the Smartphone Talk Free Promotion, the following conditions apply:
You must keep the $29.99 Data Package associated with your eligible Smartphone device
You must keep your current plan. If you change Minutes, Text, or Data, the promotion and the $9.99/line/mo.
Credit will be removed.
An eligible Smartphone must be associated with your plan. If you upgrade or change to a
non-Smartphone device, the promotion and the $9.99/line/mo. credit will be removed."
I am not currently enrolled in a data plan, in fact I have a data block set up. What does this Smartphone Talk Free Promotion mean?

If you have not made the change and would like me to check into your account before you make the change, please send me a private message with your information.  I'll check your account making sure the change your wanting to do does not affect your the shared line on your account. The only part I don't understand about the above paragraph is the part about the Unlimited Data Plan. Our family plan doesn't include a data plan at all. I was able to switch back to my i760 without changing my plan at all.
From Google, I believe I've found what's up: when I activated my phone, I specifically asked them not to activate it with a data plan and it took them a while. They must have put me on the Smartphone Talk Free promotion, with the loophole that I didn't have to activate the data plan. Then, when I attempt to switch phones (luckily to another outdated smartphone), Verizon notifies me that if I don't switch to another smartphone, I may lose the promotion. To summarize, if I'd activated a Samsung Intensity instead, I would lose the promotion to use a smartphone w/o data.
Is this summary correct?
Hi nelsonsamd,
If you do not have an unlimited data plan associated with your shared line then you do not have the $9.99 Smartphone Talk Free promotion. The message you received was simply an automated disclosure based on the fact that you had a Smartphone active on your shared line and you may have had such promotion in place. Please disregard the message.
If you activate a Samsung intensity device you can reactivate your Smartphone later without a data plan as long as it was manufactured before November 13, 2008. All Smartphones manufactured November 14, 2008 or later require a data plan in order to be activated.

  • Smartphones Talk Free promo - how to add minutes?

    Hi all -
I just signed up last month for the Smartphones Talk Free promotion for two new lines (promotional credit of $9.99/mo/line).  At the time, my understanding from the customer service people and the promotional terms was that I could add more anytime minutes at any time - even after the promo period ended.
Just now, I tried to change my 700 minute Family Share plan to a 1400 minute plan, but there was a disclosure window saying that any changes to my plan would cause me to lose my promotional credits!  Am I stuck with the 700 minute plan in order to keep the promo credits?  Or will upping my minutes still allow me to keep the monthly credits?
    Thanks!

    Anyone else have confirmation?
While browsing the forum, I came across this thread:  http://community.vzw.com/t5/Upgrade-and-Activation/How-to-best-participate-in-the-Droid-X-BOGO/m-p/34741.
In that thread, the Verizon representative says exactly the same thing I heard when I signed up: "Customers may change their anytime minutes anytime after the promotion ends and maintain the $9.99/month credit, as long as they remain on the current $9.99 Nationwide Family SharePlans or Small Business SharePlans."
That makes it sound like I CAN change my minutes, but if that's the case, how do I make sure that doing so doesn't count as changing the promo plan?

  • Online upgrade not showing the talk free promotion....

I was upgrading my daughter's phone from a Chocolate Touch to a Blackberry Bold and noticed that if I do it online I don't get the talk free promotion for upgrading to a smart phone.  Is the promotion available online?

I believe many people have said that it will not show up on your "purchase of the items in the cart" when you buy it. It should automatically show up on your bill, not when you buy the phone. If you go look at the "smartphones talk free" promo details, it should say, at least the one on "newegg.com" clarifies that.

  • Smartphone Talk Free

I am able to upgrade on Sunday, looking at my billing options etc, and I see a "smartphone talk free" help button.
I am not sure what this is, so I clicked it. It said that I lose this feature if I:
    1. Change from a smartphone to a regular phone
    2. If I change plans
    3. If I upgrade.
It says that if I do any of the three, I lose the $9.99 promotion and will have to start paying more.
Can anyone explain this feature to me. Will I have to pay $9.99 a month more if I upgrade my smartphone to another smartphone and/or if I drop from the 1400 minute to the 700 minute plan? I am thinking of doing both, but not if it will cost me another $10 a month.
Does anyone know about tehe smartphone talk free feature.
Heck, i don't even know what the feature is...do I talk free from smartphone to smartphone or what is it? I can't seem to find the information
    Thanks in advance

The Smartphone talk free program gives secondary lines with a $29.99 data plan a $9.99 credit each month for their add a line cost.  In essence this means that the total line cost is $29.99 per month instead of the usual $39.98.  If you change from a smartphone to a feature phone you will lose the discount.  If you change plans you will lose the discount.  If you upgrade without changing plans then you will not lose the discount.

  • Do you need to pay to update a paid app which you downloaded during a FREE promotion?

I downloaded this app during a promotion when it was free.
Now that I want to update it, it says 'Before you can make purchases,  you must tap Continue to sign in, then verify your payment info.'
Before I verify, I want to know if I'll end up paying for the update?

No, updates are free. You still have to have a valid iTunes Store account, though.

  • I lost my iphone and would like a new one without paying $600

I lost my iphone 1 month into my 2 year contract. I have my old phone that I've had for the past 3 years while I was waiting for the iphone to come to Verizon, but I'd really like to replace my iphone. I am kicking myself for not getting the insurance on it, but I can't do anything about that now. I'm the 2nd line and the primary line is eligible for an upgrade, but if I use that my husband is stuck with his 2 year old phone for the another 2 years.
Is there anyway around all this or do I need to get a 2nd job to be able to afford to replace my iphone?

Because Verizon requires a monthly data package on smart phones, your old number will be charged until you replace it while under contract.
When  adding the new number to get another iphone, transferring old number to your new iphone, you may be able to then transfer the "new"  number to a basic device, minimizing costs. Ask if there is a penalty for dropping the monthly data package. Verizon has a $29.99/Unlim MB data package or the limited time promotional $15/150 MB. But it is manditory on all smart phones, even lost ones, unless replaced.
WARNING: Ask the rep to confirm if you have the "Smartphone Talk Free promotion". (Very Likely)
This is Verizon's warning verbatum, taking note of the last clause:
If your plan includes the Smartphone Talk Free Promotion, the following conditions apply:
        * You must keep the $29.99 Data Package associated with your eligible Smartphone device
        * You must keep your current plan. If you change your plan, the promotion and the $9.99/line/mo.
          Credit will be removed.
        * An eligible Smartphone must be associated with your plan. If you upgrade or change to a
non-Smartphone device, the promotion and the $9.99/line/mo. credit will be removed.
BTW: People stuck with no good solution and wishing to avoid the contract cancellation penalty, have another option usually not mentioned. All carriers have a basic 1Yr service plan. Verizon's calls theirs Nationwide Loyalty 100, priced at $25 monthly, for 100m general and 500m N/W (all [email protected]),
And it proves ideal for my 8th grader, a phone for texting and emergency calls.

  • 2 lines on family plan now, if we add a third, can we remove one of the other two?

My husband and I have a 2 line family share plan with standard phones (sharing 700 mins/month w/ unlimited text).  I'm eligible for an upgrade now (primary line), and he has to wait until June.  Our contracts both expire in October.  We both want to upgrade to a plan that includes data, and probably both get the droid 2, which are buy one get one free right now.  However, they won't allow us to upgrade his phone yet, and so I can't use the bogo offer.
It seems there's also a "smartphones talk free" promotion right now too.  So to add a third line with a smartphone we'd only pay for the data plan, not the $9.99 for the extra line.  So I guess I'm looking for the loophole :-)  Would we only be paying for our two data packages, and for one of the extra lines?
If we add a third line, can we then take advantage of the bogo offer with my early upgrade and the new line?  Ideally my husband would just use the new line, and let his old phone sit until October, and then we'd go back to only having 2 lines on our plan.  Would we be able to cancel his current line in October, or would adding the 3rd line extend the contracts of all three lines on our plan?
Also could we transfer his current "line 2" number to the new "line 3" phone?

Here's the catch.  The line that is using the "Smartphones Talk Free" promo has to have a data package attached to it, which means that you would wind up in this situation:
Your Number (Line 1) - Calling Plan + Data Package
    His Number (Line 2) - $9.99 + Data Package
New Number (Line 3) - $0 + Data package (as long as the data package is kept on the line)
You'd have to have 3 data packages, one to keep the promo, and then one on the lines with the smartphones active.  Contracts and promotions are tied to the phone number, so you can't switch the number or contract end date between lines.  If your husband wants to keep his number, the best thing to do will be to wait until he is eligible for an upgrade.
If there is not a smartphone on line 2, but just a standard phone as was stated by the OP, you do not have to have a data plan on this line. To qualify for the smartphones talk free promotion, you do not have to have a data plan on all lines, just the lines you sign up with the offer for, i.e. just the primary line that is upgrading to the smartphone and the additional line that you are adding so that you can take advantage of the offer.
If you do want to take advantage of the smartphone talk free offer, though, you will have to leave the smartphone on the line you sign up with. If you move the phone to your 2nd line, I believe that the discount will be stopped.

  • Online discounts vs. instore price

I know when we first came to Verizon about 8 years ago, the policy was that if you mentioned an online discount at the store they were able to honor that price instore.  Is this still the case?  We are eligible for our NE2 tomorrow and if I do the online deal we won't get our phones intime for the "smartphones talk free" promotion.

    {width:480}{height:100}

But recently, we found we have to remove "{textColor:65535,65535,65535}" to be able to see the text. No big deal, except the text now appears justified center.
    What changed?

  • RMAN - returning to prior incarnations

I was practicing backups with my colleagues, and we shut down the database twice, reopening it both times with 'resetlogs', without backing it up in between. The database lacked the archivelog it needed for recovery the last time, so we read the docs and prepared to return to a previous incarnation.
We returned to 3 incarnations prior and restored/recovered using:
    RMAN> restore database "to_date('9/2/04 23:59:59','mm/dd/yy hr24:mi:ss');
    RMAN> recover database "to_date('9/2/04 23:59:59','mm/dd/yy hr24:mi:ss');
    I have two questions:
    1) What did returning to the prior incarnation gain for us? Seems like I could've just issued the restore/recover commands and performed an incomplete recovery.
    2) Do I need to remove the archive logs from the 2 later incarnations, or is RMAN smart enough to know that they don't apply?
    Thanks,
    Chuck

I bought my Samsung Continuum the day after Thanksgiving of last year, November 26. Originally, I intended to sell the Continuum and purchase the iPhone at retail price. However, just tonight,  I stumbled upon Verizon's return page that said they were extending the 30 day return policy to phones that were purchased from November 27th on. The last day to do this is tomorrow. The problem is I bought my phone exactly ONE day before this cutoff date. Tomorrow, I plan on going to the store to see if they will make an exception and let me return it. Then, my plan now is to activate my old phone (Samsung Rogue) until the iPhone would arrive in February and get it for $199 instead of $599.
How flexible is Verizon with these kinds of things? And do you think this will work? I will be begging the store manager tomorrow to see if they wil take it back as I wont have to pay retail and just pay the subsidized price for the iPhone. It would really stink if that one day will cost me.
    Any thoughts?
Also, one other question. If the "Smartphones Talk Free Promotion" happens to still be in effect for the iPhone, would I be eligible still? (I am a secondary line and the Continuum was my first smartphone). I am not sure as technically, the iPhone would be my 2nd smartphone once I return my current one (hopefully),
    Thanks!
I hate to be the harbinger of bad news, but you are probably going to be burdened with the Continuum because of that one day. The store may help if you are really nice, but it is unlikely. Work the charm and charisma, though. It is the least that you could do.

  • Does using Wi-Fi count towards my data usage?

If I am at work or at home and can connect to my wireless internet will this count as data usage on my verizon plan.  I only got the 105mb plan because I really only "need" access to email.  It would be nice to access the internet if I can do it without running the chance of incurring overages.
If so, how do I make sure I am not using the phones data plan?
Sorry if this is covered elsewhere.  This is my first smartphone and I am not sure what I have gotten myself into.  Thanks.
    Jodi

Make sure that not only the Wi-Fi is on, but that it's connected.  turning on WiFi doesn't automatically connect it unless you've connected to that same WiFi before.  You'll know if you're connected by checking the icon next to the signal strength indicator.  If it says 3G then you're using your data allowance.
Also, if you're on a family plan and this is your first phone you can take advantage of the smartphones talk free promotion.  They give you a $10 credit if you get the unlimited plan so it only ends up costing you $5 more than the 150MB plan, and lasts for the term of the contract.

  • Stolen smartphone, can I activate an old one?

My iPhone disappeared last weekend and I was hoping to just be able to reactivate an old Env Touch while I wait for the replacement. When I went to reactivate, a warning appeared that said my "Smartphone Talk Free" deal could disappear if I activated a non-smartphone. Considering the fact that this is just for 2 days, I don't have an issue paying for something I'm not using, but I just don't want my plan to be messed up when I get my new phone later this week.
Does anyone know if I can keep the same plan with the Env?

    This is what pops up:
-You must keep the $29.99 Data Package associated with your eligible Smartphone device
-You must keep your current plan. If you change your plan, the promotion and the $9.99/line/mo.
    Credit will be removed.
-An eligible Smartphone must be associated with your plan. If you upgrade or change to a
non-Smartphone device, the promotion and the $9.99/line/mo. credit will be removed.
I looked at the breakdown of the plan for my line and it says specifically that I have no promotions. The other line only has an employer discount, and there is no mention of the free plan. I am the secondary line, so it's the typical $9.99 a month like it is for any phone.

  • Upgrading at Walmart

    So, here's the deal...
My husband and I are on a Family plan (2 lines) where I am the primary line and he's the secondary.  He just upgraded to a smartphone at the VZW store.  Now we get a 9.99 credit on our bill every month for the next 2 years (due to the smartphones talk free special), which is an absolutely AWESOME deal, by the way!  Savings of about $240!
I'm not due for New Every Two until February 2011 (not that far away), but a friend of ours told us that we could have gone to WalMart to upgrade for cheaper.  I've done some research and read some previous post here about that and it's not that big of a deal to us.  What's done is done, he's keeping his phone.
    However, my question now is...
If I decided to upgrade my phone right now through VZW, I will get a discount, just not the New Every Two, and then they will also charge me an early upgrade fee of $20 (as per the salesman at the store).  But, what if I get my phone through Walmart?  I want the HTC Incredible and Walmart is offering a REALLY GOOD deal.  Will doing that cancel the 9.99 credit we are receiving?  I noticed the credit only applies as long as we keep our current plan (which we plan on doing anyway).
Any and all advise is appreciated.
    Thanks!

    smylemore wrote:
I guess, I don't don't the difference between the New Every Two and an annual upgrade.
The New Every Two is an upgrade at the completion of at least 20 months of your 2 year contract.  The benefits are you can purchase a discounted phone with an additional $30 - $50 off depending on your plan value.  Off course you must sign a new 2 year contract.
The Annual upgrade is for primary lines with a value greater than $49.99 where you can after 12 months upgrade your phone for the discounted price +$20 fee with the signing of a new 2 year contract.  Much like the Verizon rep indicated on your earlier post.  Also your New Every Two is reset (in effect waived).
As you indicated that your contract was not due until Feb 2011 that seemed logical that the annual upgrade was what was being offered.
