Smartphones - Idea... bit bizarre?

I had an idea ages ago that's just come back to me now, although I can't remember everything about it...
Anyway wouldn't it be cool, if, when we call/text someone, we can set the 'alert type' on the other persons phone, so if we think they're at work and it's not desperately important, it can be set to:
Normal: Whatever the other person's profile is set to
Beep Once: No explanation necessary
Silent: " " "
Obviously it would have to be recorded somehow in the logs that a specific alert was set - to stop the "I called for ages but you didn't answer" arguement.
I bet it'd be too expensive to put in to practice, but seemed like a pretty good idea to me

Seems like a pretty bad idea to me I think it should be up to the recipient to choose how they receive their messages - if they're in a meeting and don't want to be disturbed, they'll have set their alert to silent anyway.
I suppose there might be some point in having a priority setting like there is with email, so you could send a message as "important" or "not important" etc. The recipient could set their choice of alerts for each importance level.
The thing is, when was the last time you paid more attention to an email because it had that little "!" flag because the sender marked it as important?

  • Smartphones - Idea... Not quite as odd as the last...

    Hi All!
I had another thought as I woke up this morning lol
My brother is currently going around the world (it's alright for some! lol), and another friend is in Afrika for a while... I like to try to keep in touch via text, but can never remember the time difference, I don't really want to text if it's stupid-o'clock there.
Wouldn't it be good if we could set the Country for each of the contacts? The default for un-set contacts being the UK, then we could could see that in their 'profile' or maybe after their name when selecting from the list when preparing a text...
I hope people at Nokia are still reading the ideas I'm throwing on here - I will keep posting them as they come to me lol
    Any thoughts on this?

Hi, I read that at the time, I just wasn't sure whether it was worth going through that route, or just keep posting on here.
I'll do that in future though.

  • Smartphone Idea?

I'm currently using a 7-inch HD-98 Shanzhai phablet; and it's been an interesting experience. The main killer on the device is the utter lack of battery life, but besides that it is an excellent device for browsing, watching movies, and other content consumption tasks. I bought a keyboard case to go with it, but unfortunately it  has a big problem; the 7-inch HD-98 fits, with a thin leather case, barely into my pockets and I can walk around / move around with it, but the moment I add the keyboard case it no longer works out. A second problem with the keyboard case is that all the buttons are too small for me to use comfortably.
As an improvement, I am thinking of IBM's classic butterfly keyboards, but I'm not sure if other people would think it's a good idea.
    "Thinkpad ZZ Microtablet"
A 6.5-7 inch phablet with a detachable smile chiclet keyboard using a butterfly apparatus to extend its unfolded length, alongside a red thinkpoint nub and buttons for optional mouse usage. Hence the name ZZ, for Zhuang Zi.
"Once Zhuangzi dreamt he was a butterfly, a butterfly flitting and fluttering around, happy with himself and doing as he pleased. He didn't know he was Zhuangzi. Suddenly he woke up and there he was, solid and unmistakable Zhuangzi. But he didn't know if he was Zhuangzi who had dreamt he was a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming he was Zhuangzi. Between Zhuangzi and a butterfly there must be some distinction! This is called the Transformation of Things. (2, tr. Burton Watson 1968:49)"
Ideally, the IPS screen would be about 1920x1080 in resolution, with 16:9 to decrease width, targeting 4 inches in breadth, making it fit better in pockets, with a large battery to help keep it powered. It would have penta/hexa-band 3g support and quad-band 2g support, and it would support some selection of LTE bands (one wants omni-band TD/FDD LTE support, but the technology is not mature yet), as well as using dual sims for convenience purposes.
The product would probably be a metal-plastic combination, and sell for around $800 or even $1000, while using either an Atom processor or a high-end snapdragon. Perhaps it would inherit the Helix technology where a secondary battery is placed in the keyboard. The keyboard would be built to some standards, but it would not be expected to last forever and replacing it at $100 or so a pop would work better than losing the entire phone.
There should also be a rear kickstand so that the device can be used in landscape mode.

I was told that Lenovo's views, according to your boss, is that the portable computing market will eventually move from a 3-device loadout to a 2-device loadout, with tablets being squeezed out by both phablets and convertibles. A phablet with enhanced input functionality would be at least an excellent experiment. If you're going to buy out Blackberry, the improved input capability would greatly appeal to Blackberry's current userbase while taking advantage of Lenovo's Thinkpad technology.

  • Receiving, opening, saving attachments WARNING long post

In some ways, this post is more of a reminder to myself on how to deal with attachments that I've discovered so far and hopefully it will help some other confused souls. I'm betting that like most people on this forum, your interest in the Playbook is partly motivated by how you can quickly and easily access files on the run to review them and edit them minimally and quickly (oops! forgot to change the boss' title in the memo now!) without resorting to hauling out a laptop, waiting for it to start, load the relevant office program, and then hoping your hotel wifi is strong and stable enough to actually load up a bloated email client to download far too many attachments. If that's your circumstances are like mine, then the PB is clearly a work in progress. I thought that Apple's iPad method of dealing with document transfers was crippled at best; the PB is a quest in hide-and-seek.
Transferring media files (photos, movies, etc.). If you use Windows, I'm guessing you're doing okay. If you use a Mac like me, the BB Desktop will not work for such transfers. You can use wifi to bulk transfer media files from your Mac to the PB, but you lose the rich context (playlists, etc.) that you probably want.
Opening attachments in Mail within Bridge. This one confuses me, but I suppose it works best for the corporate world - maybe. If I open an attachment from an email in the PB Bridge from within Mail, I could select an attachment and tap to open it. The relevant app (Reader, sheet to go, word to go, etc.) opens up a new window and the document can be read. At this point in the RIM life cycle, any documents within Bridge are read-only and cannot be saved/edited, which of course defeats any aspirations of on-the-fly editing. Nonetheless, they are viewable and gloriously so. But it was not obvious to me where the documents were now. If I wanted to, say, review them later, where would I find them? The most rational place I thought they would be would be the Bridge Files icon. However, if I selected Playbook under Bridge Files, there did not seem to be anything, and if I selected BlackBerry smartphone, it was not obvious either. By chance, I muddled through and discovered that under the smartphone choice, if I drilled down through my SD card directory to BlackBerry to documents to Bridge (ah! that's new!) subfolders, I would find all my downloaded documents in this new Bridge folder which is supposedly on my smartphone. Distressingly, I cannot find this same subfolder "Bridge" on the SD card on the smartphone itself.
But this is the where we enter another dimension however! All of the above (2) ONLY seems to apply to emails sent to my GMail account that my BlackBerry - and therefore my PB - is also set up to receive within Mail in Bridge: given that I'm not an IT adminstrator, I'll just call them the non-corporate emails. If I open up an attachment from a message in Mail within Bridge that was sent through my usual corporate email system (in this case, Lotus Notes - yet another story), then the attachment ends up in SD card directory to BlackBerry to documents, but does not go into Bridge. I lack the knowledge or wisdom to fathom why this is different, other than it probably has something to do with the corporate side of things.
Opening attachments from Webmail (e.g. GMail). This one is also a bit bizarre. Although not very easy to find, at least all the attachments from (2) and (3) ended up in almost the same places on my smartphone SD card. But you cannot edit them.  So what if I opened up via the web browser? GMail works quite well actually. When I tapped on an attachment to open it in GMail, it would bring me to a new pane and ask me to save it (Save "1"). It does not necessarily open it however and sometimes I would just get a new blank window. But if I swipe down from the top, I could see the downloads option, and choosing that would show me the attached document and an Open button. Opening it would load the document using the relevant app (e.g. Word to Go) and swiping down gave me another save (yes!) option (Save "2"). However, I had no idea where the attachment was saved. It does not appear under Media, any Bridge folder, etc. Assuming the attachment file type is associated with the app however, if you now open, say, Word-to-Go, well, there it is (finally!). So, the bizzarre thing is that the first save (Save "1") that you are prompted with does not seem to actually save it: only after the relevant app loads it and then you save it again (Save "2") does the attachment seem to actually get transferred to the Playbook's internal memory (somewhere). I cannot figure out the reason why you have to go through this double step. But at least now I can edit them. So maybe the solution is to mirror all my corporate emails to another service like GMail or Hotmail? (I can hear the collective gasps of the security minded types!)
Opening attachments from Webmail (e.g., GMail) within the Bridge Browser. This is maybe the ultimate compromise and combination of the above, and perhaps the situation most of us want to know about when we're on the go, get that ever important email about what was needed yesterday, don't have wifi access, but need to edit the attachment and cannot do it within the regular mail within Bridge. Dismally, this one is a fail - I get the error message "Bridge Browser: Cannot download corporate files."
After fumbling my way through an iPad and pretty much abandoning it for my workflow (although it is very good for other applications), I thought the Playbook would address almost of my needs, particularly since I've used a BlackBerry for the last six years. Personally, I think the PB hardware is fantastic, the form factor is great, and I do not care for or need 1000's of useless and trivial apps, but the implementation of what I consider core functionality is mediocre at best. I'm an academic - I'd grade the Playbook a C- (maybe even a D+ (ouch!) if I was in a grumpy mood).
In the interests of fairness, I recognize that some of the issues may simply be the way my corporate parent runs its business. I toil away under Lotus Notes and use a BlackBerry Bold, OS5, Rogers network, and a three year MacBook Pro.
If anybody has found other solutions or I've simply done something wrong, I'd love to hear. Otherwise, my abode will likely not be this Playbook's forever home.

Hi fochtk... you're welcome (I think! this seems unnecessarily confusing!). I think you're referring to my points (2) and (3) from my original post. In summary, this is what I THINK is happening.
On my BlackBerry Bold 9700, I have two email accounts, my corporate Lotus account, and my GMail account. There is one universal desktop that gathers both incoming emails into one so that I can view all messages at the same time. I imagine that the corporate server for this universal desktop therefore also have all these same messages because all the messages (GMail and Lotus) then show up in Mail via Bridge on my PB.
    A. When in Bridge - Mail I open up an attachment in a mail that was received by my corporate Lotus account, the documents show up on my phone's SD card (I think you mean the memory card, not the SIM card for telecommunications). If I check my Playbook under Bridge Files -> Phone Icon -> BlackBerry/SDCard -> Documents, the attachments are there, and if I check my file manager on my phone, the same attachments are listed in the same subfolder. Interestingly, I was given the option to download them too.
    B. When I open up an attachment in a mail that was received initially by my GMail account, the documents are not given the option to download. However, when I go to Bridge Files -> Phone Icon -> BlackBerry/SDCard -> Documents -> Bridge, the attachments from this GMail destined message are there! Weird, because I didn't create a Bridge subfolder on my phone's SD card, nor can I find a Bridge subfolder on the phone itself.
SORRY. I stand corrected. I just went into Bridge - Mail to double check and guess what... ALL of my email attachments no matter what account they were sent to originally (Lotus or GMail) if they are accessed through Bridge get dumped into this Bridge subfolder that is supposedly located on my phone's SD card (situation B). Maybe situation A was for when I downloaded the attachment to the phone first: I've gone back and forth with this so many times now...
Maybe this Bridge subfolder is a hidden folder tied to your phone so that if you lose your Playbook attachments cannot be accessed? But there seems to be no options to delete these downloaded files. UPDATE! Yes, I should have checked sooner. When you are accessing your phone, use the menu button to select "Show Hidden". It then displays the greyed out Bridge subfolder under Documents and you can then manipulate (e.g., delete) your files from there. This would make sense so that your files are as secure as possible via your phone. Still can't edit the attachments though...
    Hope this helps...

  • How to retrieve pic from a contact

Hi. A bit bizarre but true. I had made a pic on my iphone, added it to my contact of choice - a okay. But the picture wont show up in the album, only with the contact. Now I need this pic on my desktop but I do not see an option to retrieve this pic to my MB or save it somewhere else.
    Any ideas?
    thanks a lot

This what I see in ML with my old SmartDisk VST (model# FDUSB-M) floppy drive:
    Interesting observations:
    1. I was able to add and remove files to the disk.
    2. I was not able to erase the disk with Disk Utility. It returned an error.
    3. Disk Utility did not offer the HFS+ format option, only FAT32 and ExFAT.
    4. I could only find 1 floppy in my house so it could be partially defective.

I haven't used any of those retailers, but I did research Royal Discount in the past and there stuff was legit. As a rule of the thumb when a company has thousands of reviews and the negative reviews don't sound too terrible I would feel comfortable with a couple of hundred dollars.

  • Can't snap to non-active artboard unless zoomed way, way in

I can't snap any objects (including guides) to a non active artboard unless I zoom all the way in. I have smart guides turned on, snap to point turned on and I'm holding down the "elusive" command key and nothing. What gives?

I also ran into the same problem (you cannot make bookmarks in text boxes other than the 'body' text boxes). I also found that even if you put a 'body' text box on your layout pages, it might get messed up by changes to the text flow (e.g., if you add more text to a body text box on a preceding page, it might push your bookmark to an undesired location).
Here is my workaround. It might seem a bit bizarre, but perhaps it will work for you.  You can make hyperlinks to widgets.  This means, you could use an empty (and hidden) Pop-over widget as the 'bookmark'.  To do this, you would insert a pop-over widget and apply a Title and label from the Widget inspector (this is required).  You can even add a new label (try 'Edit Label Styles' in the label menu of the Widget inspector) and make the name very short (I made one with just spaces in the name).
When defining the hyperlink to a widget, you need to select 'Figure' in the 'Link to' menu.  You should see your list of widgets in the inspector and you can choose the pop-up pretending to be your bookmark. I also put the page number as the regular title for the title of the pop-up widget.  You can make other changes to the widget to make it less obvious or even invisible.
When you click on the hyperlink to that bookmarked widget, it will still briefly flash yellow highlighting for the found title of the widget.  The brief flashing yellow highlighting would also show if you were using body containers with invisible text.
Hope this gives you some ideas.  Good luck!

  • Strange re-appearing alias file in Trash

    Hi guys
I have a slightly bizarre question - there is an alias file that keeps appearing in my Trash called '␀␀␀õ␀␀.␀␀'. If I try to drag it out of the Trash it mystically disappears, and also if I hit command-i it also mystically disappears. Then when I re-open the Trash it magically re-appears again! Emptying the Trash, however, doesn't affect it at all (all other files in the Trash are removed as expected).
Anybody got any ideas of whats going on? It doesn't seem to be causing any problems; it's just a bit bizarre.....

  • Autocompletion of email addresses

I've found that when I'm typing email addresses into a pages document, it helpfully autoformats them as clickable "mail to" links (so you can click them and open a mail message to that person). However, it is also doing something very weird when autoformatting them, which is that it is changing the way the addresses appear on my screen - reordering the letters and punctuation in the address itself.
I just typed a list of email addresses to make a contacts page for my notice board, and all the ".ac.uk" endings on the addresses look on screen in pages as if they are ".ac.ku" (i.e. The last two letters are reversed when pages autoformats the typed in address). I've also typed in a name "s.l.mclean" which autoformatted to "s.lm.clean" (i.e. The period between the l and m jumped across by one letter when the email address autoformatted).
The thing is, this means my document looks like it has terrible typos in it and like the addresses are incorrect - which means it's not much good for sharing with colleagues, nor for putting up a print out on my notice board. BUT the addresses themselves (as links) are fine - when I click the typed in addresses, the mail window opens with perfect ".ac.uk" email addresses, and "s.l.mclean" looks fine in the Mail compose window, even though it looked wrong in Pages itself when I clicked the link. So it's not the links, and it's not my typing. It's something that Pages 09 is doing when it autoformats the email addresses as email links.
It's a bit bizarre, and I assume it's a bug. I've reported it to Apple via the feedback from within the Pages application, but I wondered if anyone else has had the problem, or has any ideas to fix it so the document looks nice... Every time I edit the addresses, they just autoformat right back to the same weird reorganised text!

    Hi Josie,
Odd. I don't know if this will answer your question, but have a look at Pages Preferences > Auto-Correction > Automatically use spell checker suggestions
Also System Preferences > Language and Text* > Text
*(or International depending on your OS X version)

these were reinstallign app world, making a new blackberry id as the other email address was associated with an old blackberry, security wiping the phone then restoring it and entering the new bb id, changing the date to 2014 and then hard wiping the phone and restoring it
i have twitter, facebook and bbm ect apps but these are RIM made i think and already preinstalled. everything else on the phone works fine

    Hello carckberrypie,
In this case i would recommend wiping the BlackBerry smartphone. To do this we would need to back up the BlackBerry smartphone http://bit.ly/aSediX
Once backed up please follow the link below to perform a security wipe of your BlackBerry smartphone.

  • Email Data Detection Stopped Since SL Upgrade

    Hi
I receive emails for events all the time and they have the following date format (example shown)
    2009-09-19 19:30:00
Apple Mail used to recognise this as a date and time in the email so I could make a quick iCal addition. This seems to have ceased with the SL upgrade. It still detects more obvious dates and other data but I need it to detect this type as before.
    Any ideas?

This is a bit bizarre ... I sent myself an email with nothing but a number of different date formats.
    2009-09-07
    2009/07/15
    9/14/09
    14/9/09
    14/09/09
    14/09/2009
    *september 7th, 2009*
    Data detection spots them all.
I then went in to another email where the date was included as part of the email text (the type of email that I need it to detect info for) and it will not show!

  • One computer two users simultaneously?

Hi, I'll try to explain what i would find very usefull feature hopefully i can pull it out nicely and clear enougth. Also i am not programmer/coder so i do not know if the idea is possible at all.
So basic idea is to have only one computer and two users, doing their own tasks at
    same time.
There would be two keyboards two monitors and two mouse all plugged to one mainboard, except monitor which would go to gfx card. When computer is powered on, both monitor would have their own login screen and the users could at any time they want login and start using the computer.
Now i thougth this is simple concept so i searched net all-over and under and found only few ideas bit close to this, and some places that would sell special equipment (very expensive) to do this, Mainly breaking the whole idea.
I'm already using seperate X's screens for my crt&tv-out configuration, i think that already is quite good. But i would like to make it one step futher, so i could basicly use the seperate screen totally as its own work unit, without it intefere at all to my crt screen.
The computers nowdays are quite powerfull this kind of tasks that two users would do something simple like surfing web doing some office stuff etc, should not require too much cpu power? Playing something like DOOM3 on both same time. would probably not work that   smoothly.
I can think many good uses to that/this kind of system so i wont do pro's con's list.
Does anyone know if there already is this kind of system with easy method to do and not needing to use extra money if i already have all the hardware needed? Or is this
just simple impossible due hardware limitations?

    Hey,
I believe it's possible. I've read about it a while ago I believe. You need to patch your Xserver I think. A good thing would to ask a question on the Xorg-list on this if you use Xorg, Xfree86, ... There is an irc-channel for xorg I believe.
I would first advice you to do the above thing(s) ...
    Maybe I found a reference ...
Here is an extract from it:
There is a HOWTO at tldp.org. Look for XFree local multi-user.
The ruby (backstreet ruby for 2.4.x kernels) kernel patch allows interception of events from multiple keyboards to be bound to specific virtual terminals. The latest XFree and Xorg Xservers are now including this ability with the isolateDevice config file option. Older X servers need to be additionally patched. Basically, you craft an X config file to bind specific mice, graphics cards and monitors to their own screen layouts. Of course there is more to it than this. One accepted method is to alter the hotplug subsystem to automatically create your added devices, then you supply symlinks and binding instructions to the device addresses with config files. Keyboards are another matter. They are handled through the ruby patch. Using a 2.6.x kernel, the controlling terminal is assigned the use of virtual terminals 1-17. The next x screen is number 18, etc. The second keyboard, VT1, is automatically bound to the second x screen, VT18. This is of course oversimplified, and yes I've read that this method should work with up to 16 layouts!
What the multiseat package does I don't know. I will try it out this weekend. As far I have researched, it makes it easier to find and configure the several config files you need. If some one knows, please post.

  • Will a Western Digital 250GB 2.5" Hard Drive fit into my 12" PB

    Hi all,
Done some searching on the forum but i can't find the correct info. So here goes my current 60gb HD is full so i need a much bigger one.
I have found one on a UK web site a Western Digital 250GB 2.5" Hard Drive IDE 5400rpm 8MB Cache for a good price http://www.ebuyer.com/product/132386/showproductspecifications
,this seems to be the biggest i can find. Will it fit and work correctly?? It is 7 cm x 10 cm x 9.5 mm
On this forum i can only find details of a 160GB seagate being fitted (this one i assume Seagate ST9160821A 160GB 2.5" Hard Drive IDE 5400RPM 8MB Cache ??)
Have i got the IDE bit right or do i need a SATA, both listed as mac compatible but which one?
    Thanks for your help
    Phil

Have you considered an external hard drive, so you can back up your current system plus use it for additional storage? If it needs to be portable, you can get any size 2.5" drive and put it in a firewire case, for example http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/on-the-go (it's a US store, but you get the idea). You would need either a firewire or combined firewire/USB case, as our Powerbooks can only boot from a firewire device.

Yes, it will fit. There has been some question recently whether the Powerbook bios (that's a Windows term, so the Apple equivalent) will support a drive that large. While it shouldn't be a problem, I'd want to confirm that someone else has one installed.

You're correct that you want an ATA/IDE drive. Our Powerbooks cannot use SATA drives, which are used in the current Apple notebooks.

  • Problem with iWeb 1.1 photos solved... for me, at least

After updating, some of my photo pages were broken. Slideshow wouldn't work and clicking on a photo would not open a larger version. Some pages, however, did work. After hours of trying to figure this all out, I finally narrowed the problem down. If the page had an apostrophe in the title, it was broken (e.g.:Tyler's Party). If it did not, it worked. These titles worked in the earlier version. Simply deleting one punctuation mark magically made the pages work again. If you are having this problem check this or other punctuation in the titles.

I had the exact same problem and as others have suggested, the apostrophe in the page name could be the culprit of the problem. For me, that was the problem. I had a page named "Dog's day at the beach" and that worked just fine in iWeb 1.0.1. Now with iWeb 1.1, I had to rename is "Dog day at the beach" which luckily has a similar meaning given the context of my photos and when I took it.
A bit bizarre how such a simple apostrophe could escape Apple's iWeb engineers.
I hope this will be fixed in a soon-to-come update.
