Smartview functions very slow - even for one cell.

We have several Smartview functions spreadsheets that are running very slowly. I took one and removed everything except for one cell that with the hsgetvalue formula, and the cells that it links to to get the point of view. It either takes about 10-20 seconds to refresh or gives us error 12030 and does not refresh.
Other spreadsheets seem to have no problem refreshing, even if they are quite a bit larger.
Have any of you seen anything like this? Any ideas?

It could be some type of network connectivity issue.
If you install Fiddler2 (http://www.fiddler2.com/fiddler2/), you can see the actual communicatiosn from Smartview and the web server running smartview. If you get an immediate response between the request and the response, then something is probably going funny inside of Smartview on your machine. If the response to the data request from Smartview is taking a long time, then I would investigate teh server to see if there are any resource issues, etc.
It won't immediately give you the cause; however, it will help you narrow some things down.

  • TM is very slow even for tiny backups

    Hi,
I've been using Time Machine for quite some time now, a year or more. It was fine at first, no problems doing the initial backup and everything works fine.
But over time it seems to have become slower and slower. Now even when the amount of data to back up is very small (a few megabytes), the whole process takes 25 minutes or more. When the backup is larger (100mb or more), the backup often takes longer than an hour. Time Machine spends more time backing up than it does waiting in between backups.
I see nothing in the Console logs that indicates a problem. Here's what a typical small backup looks like:
    14/03/09 7:47:27 AM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[1216] Starting standard backup

As you can see, well over 20 minutes from start to finish. The whole time it's happening, backupd thrashes the disk and uses 20-50% CPU, so it's not fun.
Surely this is not normal? I never measured it before, but I'm certain it was many times faster before.

    awhs wrote:
The pre-backup and copying time is now very short, less than a minute.
    Ah, that's more like it.
Post-backup thinning takes almost all of the 10 minutes. Removing the IMAP folder reduced the size of the TM data by around 10gb. So the issue here seems to be the number of files. I suspect there is something else in my old backups (which go back around 12 months) that has a large number of small files, just like the IMAP folder, and that is contributing to the 10 minute post-backup time.
Not exactly. Post-backup thinning is just TM deleting "expired" backups -- hourlies over 24 hours, dailies over a month. Once it's down to deleting only a few at a time, it should be much faster. What may be happening is, the old backups still contain thousands of the "multi-links" from the IMAP files. Once they get weeded out, each one will be deleted much faster.
A couple of things to try:
Download the TimeTracker app, from www.charlessoft.com.
It shows most of the files saved by TM for each backup (excluding some hidden/system files, etc.). This will tell you what, specifically, is being backed-up now.
Do a +Repair DIsk+ (not Permissions) on your TM drive via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
Then watch both the number of backups deleted and how long it takes to delete them.

please can anybody give me some useful suggestions....

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

I have recently updated to ios6. But safari browser is very slow ,even twitter, Facebook also facing the same problem also cannot accsess to some websites too.

    Try these basic troubleshooting steps.
Quit all apps completely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Or .... Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
For Safari ..... Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • Ago and Todate functions very slow

I have been playing around with the Ago and Todate functions in BI EE (based on data from the Global schema which I imported into BI EE Administrator) but I find these functions very slow to return the data in an Answers report. Has anyone else found this?

What's the size of the data set?
Yes, I'm currently experiencing it. Running on a 600-700k rows tables...
However, there're 2 things that might help:
    a) we're doing development with cache off - enabling cache - makes report come instantly...
    b) make sure the metrics have correct levels set up - i.e. it's sometimes advantageous to have several duplicates of 1 metric just for this purpose...with different levels....
Please let me know if you find other ways to improve performance...

Periodically double click the home button and close all the apps in the recently used dock. Then power off and then back on the iPod. This frees up memory. The 4G only has 256 MB of memory.

With your line attenuation you should be getting a sync speed of 16000 kbps and a profile of about 14 Meg, however it looks like you line has been capped at 1/2 a Meg, that is why your noise margin is so high ( should be around 6dB ) now this could be due to a line fault ( loss of framing/signal ) or a problem with your internal wiring.
However since you have has this problem for so long your best bet is to ring BT India on 0800 111 4567 and try and get a SFI fault raised so an Openreach broadband engineer can come and see if they can sort the problem out.

  • Table cell Render for one cell

    Hi all
I am hoping that someone can help me with a cell render for one cell only.
I am needing to make some cells bold.
What i was hoping is that there is a way of passing in a row and column number to make that cells font bold?
    Any ideas ??
I am building a List of accounts that I what to look like this.
    1-0000 Asset |Asset|Balance
    1-1000 Cheque Account |Bank|Balance
    1-2000 Credit Cards |Credit|Balance
    1-2020 Visa |Credit Card|Balance
    1-2030 Master Card |Credit Card|Balance

Create a renderer like you've done in the past:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=679718&start=2
The renderer knows the row and column you are doing the renderering on so you just need to add a conditional check:
    if (aBoldCell)
    setFont( getFont().deriveFont(...) );
    else
    setFont( table.getFont() );

It may be due to low number of implicit cursors which the system opens during run time.
You can try opening the file 'initorcl.ora' in notepad and add a line at the end of the file, if not there,
    OPEN_CURSORS = 900
    and save it.
restart the system, check your report.

Go to your User's Library folder. (if you don't know how to find, see this link.)
    Scroll to Mail folder.
Select the V2 > MailData folder.
Delete any files in MailData with envelope in the name. (should be 3)
When you open Mail it will re-index your files.
If you have IMAP accounts, you might want to delete the accounts then add back so they download all messages from the server again.

  • IPhoto '08 very slow upload for calendar / books?

    Hi,
I'm having a LOT of problems with uploading my 2008 Calendar projects. I've created a Calendar in iPhoto. The total size is 22 MB. When I click "Buy Now", it goes through the process of assembling the calendar, and then starts uploading the files to Apple. But the upload process is VERY SLOW.... it uploads maybe a hundred KB a minute or so, then usually stalls out and I get an error message saying "There was an error sending your files to Apple. Retry?"
-I've tried this at least 40-50 times over the past week (yes, these are Christmas presents for the grandparents!).
-At first I figured it was bandwidth at the Apple side, so I've tried it at all hours of the day and night, with no effect.
-I've tried it on wireless network at home, as well as plugged directly into network at both home and work.
-I have been able to get 2 orders to go through, the rest have all failed. I've actually received one of the orders, and the calendars look great!
-My broadband connection is fine... I'm able to upload pictures to Shutterfly, Flickr, and via FTP with NO problems at all and very rapid throughput. Speedtest.net shows my upload and download speeds are fine.
The odd thing is... When I watch the Activity Monitor, during assembly of the calendar I see high CPU utilization and very little network utilization from iPhoto (as I would expect). But once the files start uploading, I see a few spikes in outgoing network traffic, then erratic spikes of outbound data (nothing sustained). When I send large batches of files through FTP, or other upload I get sustained outbound network traffic. After a few minutes... I hear the fan on my MacBook cranking up, even though the CPU activity is idle on the activity monitor.
My theory: this is a software problem in iPhoto, NOT a network problem. Possibly from one of the recent iPhoto or security updates? I suppose this could be a corrupted preferences file, but don't know which ones I can safely delete. My iPhoto library is working fine, no errors in that.
Any suggestions? Santa will bring you good karma if you can help me get these calendars to the grandparents soon!
    Jim

    Chris
There were a couple of cases of this reported after v7 was launched.
    Some things to try:
    1. Make sure you're up-to-date - iPhoto is up to 7.1.1 now.
    2. Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. Try delete the com.apple.iphoto.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder

  • Mid-2010 27" iMac very slow, even after clean OS install - HELP!

Good afternoon guys, I'm hoping someone can offer me some advice.
I bought my Mid-2010 27" iMac in May-ish 2011. Everything was brilliant, I couldn't believe the ease of use, and especially the start up speed, coming from a world of PCs. My iMac was used almost every day, for web browsing, photo editing, etc.
Maybe about April / May this year it started becoming very slow, slow to boot, slow to respond to mouse clicks, slow to do anything. Since I'd used about 750GB of my HDD (mainly photos), I decided I would archive some and hope that would ease the congestion. As my photos were stored in Aperture, it took about 3 days to export them all to my external HDD, 3 days of the iMac only getting so far, switching itself off, then me finally getting it to come back on (I was getting messages about Kernals, etc. now and again through boot too) - it finally backed up my photos I have from my daughters first year.
Great news, but I still had probably 400GB / 500GB of photos from her second year and any other photos I'd taken. I found the root of my Aperture directory, and managed to pull these images off, so everything is now backed up.
I decided I should try and clean install, and managed to get the HDD to boot and choose the option to re-install from Apple's Servers. All installed OK, and we're good to go! Fired up the iMac, and although it's fractionally quicker to respond, and a lot more stable, it's not quite right. And I've lost all my iLife Apps which originally came with the iMac.
Does this sound like a HDD issue? As I say, it was on quite a lot through the backup procedure, and I had set it (maybe stupidly looking back now) to never sleep, and for the monitor to only switch off after 3 hours. Or does it sound like something more is wrong with it?
I am quite confident of working with PCs, so would manage to replace the HDD I think, looking at some videos, etc. online. I did upgrade the RAM to 16GB, and that was simple enough. My question is, when you replace the HDD, how does it know where to look to the Apple Servers for the clean OS install? Or do I have to do something to let it know where to look first? I have to point out I don't have any Time Machine backup, etc. as the iMac was just not stable enough to get this in place - and up until that point, again probably stupid now looking back, I had never bothered to set up.
Any help / advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated. At the moment I have totally fallen out of love with the iMac, for something to cost £1,500+ and only last 3 years, where my last build PC lasted Approx 8 years for half the price, is very disappointing.
    Thanks in advance,
    Col

Just suggesting things right off the bat here-
To me it sounds as though the HDD is failing, if your iMac shipped with a Seagate drive try entering your serial number to see if Apple will replace it:http://www.apple.com/au/support/imac-harddrive/
Or try running Apple Hardware Test a few times back to see if it is a hardware error.
As for the iLife apps they should've come on one of the install discs that shipped with your mac.
If your iMac is ineligible for the program above I would consider replacing it yourself with either an SSD or HDD, as for recognising apples servers for download, you will need the original install discs that came with your computer or if you haven't already it will need a firmware update to enable internet recovery
See here:Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery
    Good Luck!

  • Very Slow Save for Web in CS3 Mac

I have Photoshop CS3 Extended 10.0.1 running on a 2.16GHz Intel MacBook running 10.4.11 with 2Gb of installed RAM and around 30% free hard disk space.
Regardless of file size or dimension, Save For Web is painfully slow to load and to save out. Optimized previews update quick enough when settings are changed, but everything else about Save For Web feels like wading in treacle.
Anyone else got this problem? It would be good just to know that I'm not the only one with this issue!
    Any ideas for fixes?
    Jonathan

    >My hatred of laptops has NOTHING to do with Photoshop
And my commentary had nothing to do with your hatred. The OP is all about Photoshop usage on laptops, and I am quite experienced using PS on laptops. When I said
    >Note that older laptops like Ramón mentioned would not run PS...
I was just discussing the OP.
For the record I am not a proponent of using laptops or even the stronger iMacs as desktop tower replacements for heavy graphics users. I have consistently recommended in favor of towers and long life cycles and I will continue to do so.
However for the last six months or so I have frequently been using a C2D Macbook Pro as a desktop replacement and I can report unequivocally that it works, especially power-wise, which is what the OP was about. Also based on that experience and also unequivocally I consider using MBPs or the similarly limited iMacs for production graphics work inadvisable.
Strong laptops are incredible machines. They open mobile computing usages that can be of great benefit to many folks, enough benefits that I for one will always have a laptop as one of my computers. The ability to literally do any computing task (except volume graphics production) anywhere is pretty spectacular.
Photo capture, edits and presentation in the field is of huge benefit. Even with something as mundane as this forum communication the ability to do it sitting in the living room instead of sequestered in an office is IMO a good thing.
