  • Trouble Booting: Open Firmware error, blank screen, frozen gray screen, etc

So I got the "To continue booting, type 'mac-boot' and press return" message today when I started my computer.
I restarted and reset the PRAM.
The message still appeared after I reset PRAM so I reset the Open Firmware settings by typing "reset-nvram" and pressing return and then typing "reset-all" and press returning.
The computer restarted but still came to the "To continue booting, type 'mac-boot' and press return" message.
That's when I noticed this at the top of the screen:
    DEFAULT CATCH! code: fffffff6 %RR0: ff80b260 %SRR1: 0000b030
I think I wrote all of it down correctly.
I had a mouse attached when the problem occurred the first time. I removed the mouse and restarted the computer.
The next time I started up the computer all I got was a blank (black) screen. I could hear the harddrive on, but nothing showed up on the screen. Shut it down by holding in the power button, started it again, same result. I shut it down again, held in the little reset button on the back, and started it up again and this time it worked.
A few start-ups later, I got the grey Apple screen but it froze there. I restarted and got the same result as described above, and followed the same steps as above to get started up.
    Suggestions?

If you get to a dialog prompt that reads, "To continue booting, type 'mac-boot' and press return."
You need to reset your Mac's built-in low-level operating system, Open Firmware. Open Firmware is the first thing your Mac looks at when it boots and is responsible for telling your Mac what to do when it turns on.
When you get that screen prompt type; don't type mac-boot-
    type
    reset-nvram
press the return key on your keyboard
    reset-all
    press return again
Some machines may return "unknown word" in response to the reset-nvram instruction; if that happens, try init-nvram instead.
If you get the dialog prompt shown in the first line of this post every time you startup, reset the PRAM as shown in Apple doc.#2238.
Post back if you need more....
    Cheers!

  • SSRS 2012 Blank Screen Report Manager

Installed SQL Server 2012 and configured Reporting through configuration manager but whenever i use the http://<servername>/Reports it gives me blank screen.
    Things i tried
    >Opening browser with Admin privileges
    > Trusted sites inclusion
    >Changing ports for report manager
    >Fresh install of SQL Server
    Other Details
    > Service account used = Network Service

    > Reports accessing with full admin privileges
    Error:
Blank screen on report manager | HTTP 500 Internal Server Error

    Hi Saurabh,
Based on my research, we can refer to the following three tips to troubleshooting this issue:
Check whether the TCP port number of reporting services is duplicate with other sites' on IIS. We can find the TCP port number of reporting services in Web Service URL or Report Manager URL pages of reporting services configuration tool.
Check whether the SQL Server Name is correct in the Database tab in Reporting Services Configuration Manager. We can see the correct server name when we connect Reporting Services Configuration Manager. And based on my research, the Reporting Services server
name is the computer name which install the report server.
Check if the SecureConnectionLevel set to 0 which is least secure. To check this, open the rsreportserver.config file, by default, this file is stored at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS11.MSSQLSERVER\Reporting Services\ReportServer, and locate
    its
< Add Key="SecureConnectionLevel" Value="0"/> element and ensure its value is set to 0.
If the issue is still exists, please try to use the report links in Web Service URL and Report Manager URL of reporting services configuration manager tool, and check the error logs.

  • Windows Server 2008 Standard 32-bit gives Rundll32.exe error and blank screen on bootup

Last week our file server installed automatic updates and then requested a reboot.  After rebooting it repeatedly gave a blue screen and rebooted.  After 5 hours on the phone with Microsoft support we all gave up on it with no solution.  Later
we were able to get the machine to boot using an old mirrored hard drive of the system drive.  We can now access our data drive, however after login we get this error:
Rundll32.exe : Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the
    item.
and the console just shows a blank screen.  We are not able to do anything on the server.  I can Ctrl-Alt-Del and bring up Task
Manager and I see that SQL Server is not running, so not all services are running normally.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Based on my research, this issue occurs because the Rundll32.exe file is corrupted. You need to extract a new copy of Rundll32.exe in C:\Windows\System32.
To do this, you can either copy it from another same version of Windows or perform an In-Place Upgrade.
How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows
    Server 2008 & Windows Server 2008 R2

I have just downloaded 10.5.  it gives me a blank screen for the itunes store.  No error message.  Internet connection fine and I have checked my firewall settings.  Any ideas?  Or is the store blocked because of ios 5 release today?

I've had the exact same issue since late last night since I downloaded 10.5
I'm also having problems backing up my iPhone, which I suspect is due to the same issue.
I've tried all recommended solutions on forums and Apple support (deleting backups, restarting phone/computer, disabling/uninstalling third party security software, testing port connectivity) and none of them work.
I will try japiohelp's solution and see if that does anything.

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely.  Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

    Thanks for the reply.
Although the security of Windows XP SP3 32 bit is compromised by Microsoft no longer supporting XP, if Windows XP was restored as claimed, you should still be able to install/uninstall Premiere Elements versions of it that you did before the Microsoft support removal.
I think a revisit to the Geeks would be in order. It may be that they could not restore Windows XP because of the Microsoft non support. I would take along the Premiere Elements installation disks so that you do not leave there without actually seeing Premiere Elements (or a non Adobe program) running on your restored Windows XP. What was the other software that you tried to use that did not work?
Please update us on your progress when you get a chance.

  • IPhoto blank screen error message

iPhoto opens with blank screen and error message "Your iPhoto Library is in use by another application or has become unreadable". Not in use by another application. Tried repairing, doesn't work. Reopened while holding down Option and Command, didn't work. Any suggestions?

    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Tried installing Windows Vista, cancelled install and now it won't boot from the OEM Vista DVD, all i get is BOOTMGR is missing error... Ctrl Alt Del to restart and when i turn the computer on i get a blank screen and pressing C is not working to boot....

    Topic says it all...
My friend started a installation of Windows Vista, but pulled out after deleting all partitions...
So now i power it on, get a blank screen (seems a bit gray because of backlighting, should show the apple logo right?)...
Then after like 15-20sec it will throw out a:
    BOOTMGR is missing
    Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
I have a OEM Windows Vista DVD in the drive, and i know... Windows 7 is better... but i'm not that fond of stealing software from Microsoft and i have 10 licenses for Vista...
I have tried pressing C while booting up but it doesn't work...
Does anyone here have a magic soloution for me, and no i will not install MacOS on it !!!

Deleting Boot Camp partitions the conventional way will not work . You must use the Boot Camp Assistant to remove a Boot Camp partition. Here is a link to the guide.
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Boot_Camp_Install-Setup_10.6.pdf
The way to restart is to hold down the option/alt key during startup* and then selecting the Mac OS. If you have a valid Boot Camp install of Windows it would show up during this type of start up.
    * hold down immediately after pressing the power button and until the OS choice screen appears.
    To summarize.
1 Use the above method to boot into Mac OS.
2 Download the instructions and read them.
3 Use Boot Camp Assistant to remove the partition.
4 Pick your friends more carefully.

  • Help! From 1-3-3-1 error to blank screen

I have a T42 laptop which I bought in Jan 2005.  The past few days, I have not been able to get the PC to boot -- it would go through the IBM screen to a blank screen and then beep 1-3-3-1.  According to online research, that code would appear to be a memory issue.  I removed the memory chip (512) and tried it in both the internal slot under the keyboard (where it was) and the slot in the back of the machine.  Now when I try to boot the PC, it either goes (1) to IBM screen, then directly to blank screen, though battery and circle/z light are green and I can hear the fan going, or (2) from IBM screen to a config screen, then if i press any key whatsoever, it goes to the prior described blank screen.
    Any ideas???
    Follow up:
This time when I got to the config screen, I was able to enter the time/date page, and it said the date was 01/01/1988.  Huh.  As I tried to type in the correct date, I had pressed 09 tab and the screen went to black.

    Hello Maeisner,
your TP suffers from a problem called "flexing". Your gfx chip became loose and therefore the screen goes blank
unfortunately you´ll need a new motherboard.
Try to boot with a Linux Live Cd, when screen goes blank, buy a new mobo.
And the always carry with closed lid and with two hands, otherwise you´ll get the same problem again.
Hopefully your system is under warranty.

  • New Install - startx results in blank screen with mouse cursor

I installed Arch on my desktop last week with no issues, so I wanted to install it on an old THinkpad R31. Everything with the installation went smooth, but when I try to 'startx' all I get is a blank screen with a mouse cursor that I can move around. I've installed xorg-xinit, xorg-twm, xorg-xclock, and xterm.
I'm not getting any significant errors in the logs, or even the terminal I issue 'startx' in.
I'm not sure what the problem could be...
Here is my output from 'startx'

According to his first post he has both xorg-twm and xterm installed.
    I do indeed.
I went ahead and installed LXDE anyways, just to see what would happen. Exact same thing, it looks like everything is about to load but only the mouse cursor shows up. My Xorg.0.log is the same, so I won't post it again.
I do get an error in the console about the openbox menu.xml file missing but I doubt that's related.

Did you configure the web server as the last part of foundation services? You could always get a patch for IE support but the blank screen always appears if the services wasn't started up correctly or if the web server wasn't configured lastly after any configuration change.
About the Weblogic here's where you can get more info about your error message: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E12839_01/apirefs.1111/e14397/LogMgmt.html
    "BEA-170011
Warning: The LogBroadcaster on this server failed to broadcast log messages to the admin server. The Admin server may not be running. Message broadcasts to the admin server will be disabled.
    Description
The LogBroadCaster on the managed server could not find a reference to the DomainLogHandler on the admin server. Messages from this server will not be logged in the domain log.
    Cause
The managed server might not be able to reach the admin server. One of the possible causes could be due to the admin server being shutdown.
    Action
To fix this problem, inspect the exception stack trace, correct the problem. If the admin server is shutdown, restart it to resume normal log broadcasting to the domain."

  • My mail app quits a few seconds after launching. I get a blank screen and then it goes back to the starter screen

THe mail app on my ipad 2 quits right after launching. This happened as I was forwarding an email with a long attachment. Now I get a blank screen with just the icons, no mail mailboxes etc. after a few seconds that blank screen disappears and we go back to the starter screen. I tried rebooting, relaunching but no luck so far. Can somebody help me? Thanks
    Hans V

Have you tried removing the email account from the app through settings?  I would try removing it, rebooting, opening the email app to see if it still crashes,  & then adding it back your email account.
If you're leary about causing more issues while you're not home, you could always try using a third party mail app (there are many), accessing your email through it...not a fix for your problem but a way to deal with the situation until you can get it worked out.
Resetting all settings on the iPad (not deleting content) is a good way to clear many errors as it can remove leftover cache files & files that have become corrupt.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.  Good luck & let us know if you get it working.

  • Startx & gdm give blank screen

I'd like to get GNOME installed for a GUI environment. Proving difficult. Anybody have any idea how to help me?
    typing "startx" gives blank screen
setting "systemctl enable gdm" gives blank screen after boot
setting "systemctl start gdm" gives blank screen
I installed brand new Arch (2014.10.01) following the wiki step by step. Everything worked okay. So I set out to get gnome installed.
    To install gnome, I installed:
    xorg-server
    xorg-xinit
    xf86-video-intel
    libva-intel-driver
    libva
    lib32-mesa-libgl (after uncommenting pacman.conf)
    gnome (with all 1-40)
I tried adding "exec gnome-session" to the ~./xinitrc file and then rebooting but this did nothing.
Did I miss installing something? Some file need configuring?
By the way, how do I get internet at boot automatically without having to type "dhcpcd <ethernet-adapter-name here>" after every boot?

Not sure how to fix it, but you should need the base install, xorg-server, gnome, and I usually include the option xorg-server-utils but that shouldn't be needed?
At that point you should be able to enable/start GDM and if everything goes good it will work. Obviously not your case, I just say this to point out that so far your not wrong...
No idea on that one, but first I would be looking at making sure I had the right video drivers for xorg (see the xorg wiki page about identifying video card with 'lspci | grep -e VGA -e 3D' ), and look up the logs to see what X is actually doing and if its running and just outputing to the wrong display or if there are errors, ect...
Internet kind depends on how/what your trying to do, however in your case the most normal thing would likely be to install network manager, then you will probably also have to download a gnome network manager applet (I think its network-manager-applet)
This will give you the normal system tray icon to manage your network manager settings.
With only a command line I typically prefer wifi-menu for ease.
