SMB/CIFS browsing slow with folders with many files

My NAS (Buffalo Linkstation HG) SMB/CIFS browsing from OSX is slow when a folder has many files in it, with ball spinning for more than 30 seconds before listing folder contents depending on how many files the folder has.
But accessing the same Linkstation from Windows XP is fast. Even Windows XP inside OSX (using Parallels) is fast.
Since the same machine but inside Parallels is fast seems not a network issue to me. Maybe some setting in OSX could help, or some setting in smb.conf inside the Linkstation (I can change it by using Openlink, a non official firmware).
Also, AFP folder browsing is fast, but not using it because the one included with the Linkstation has filename length limitations to be compatible with OS Classic.
Anyone had a similar problem accesing a SMB/CIFS share?
Thanks.

There was a suggestion out here recently to disable Bonjour's Name Resolution...but connecting to the remote drive by IP address, instead of name.
Like so:
Connect by IP address, and it should bypass Bonjour name resolution. Hit command-K, and in the window that pops up type
afp://<ip-address>
where <ip-address> is the IP of the host you want to connect to. For example, if the IP address of the Aiport basestation hosting the drive is 10.0.0.1, you would type:
afp://10.0.0.1
This was a long fix for a slightly different problem http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=877397&tstart=0
Worth a try.
Aso consider if thisis a large folder full of pictures - mac seems to think it needs to generate thumbnails of all those image files...think of the network and CPU time needed for that.

  • LTFS is slow when dealing with many files

Working with LTFS on Windows 7 64, I find find that it slows down significantly when dealing with many files (>1500)
From the behaviour, I suspect that it has to do with the number of file handles.
Some LTFS vendors have a copy utility that deals very well with this situation.
I could not find anything like that for HP.
Does it exist? Is there an open source solution?
    Thank you,
    - Bartels

Can someone from the Experts please respond?
Your LTFS solution is in certain situations much slower than the competitors; the difference is a huge factor three..
I would really like to know if there is a solution or not. Either way.

  • Browsing directory with RAW files

Is there any way to browse directory with RAW files? I can use dcraw, ufraw or rawstudio to work on single file, but how to find the file I want in directory with more than 100 RAWs?

I use rawtherapee for most of my photo editing needs.  (Not that I have an especially high skill level.)  It provides, among other things, a browser interface for moving through your files.  It looks like AUR still has version 2.3 -- I suggest the beta instead, which is available for x86_64 or x86 right from www.rawtherapee.com -- IME it's been very stable, and it contains many, many bugfixes and interface/workflow improvements over the current "release" version.
I haven't broadly sampled a bunch of different apps, but I've been very happy with it.
No installation is required, just extract to the directory of your choice and execute "rt" to run it.
To get it working on Arch, I did have to do this step first, as noted in the comments in AUR:
As root run "gtk-update-icon-cache -f /usr/share/icons/THEME" for the Icon-THEME you are using and rawtherapee starts nicely.
If you try running it without first doing that, and it fails to start up, check to see whether you need to kill the "rt" process before trying again.
I've been using it since 2.3 was first released (IIRC) and have used it under Ubuntu and openSUSE successfully, in addition to Arch, both x86 and x86_64.

Thx for that im gonna try it....but is there a way to do it without using toolbar or cmd-c...? i mean using only the mouse?why does it have to highlight the file even though i click a bit next to it....?using icon view i can right click next to the folder and i wont have a problem but with list view that i prefer using it will highlight the whole row.....and i dont find free space to right click cause i got many files

My iMac (27", mid 2011) has slowed and gives many, many errors via Console. I have Zapped the pRAM, used safe start, Etresoft check, and a complete check with TechTool. 1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Analyzer running slow with many members

Hi all!I have a cube with many members in one dimension (possibly up to 40K). The dimension has a flat organisation - a member can have several thousands children.EIS and the excel add-in handles this well, but Analyzer runs terribly slow with this dimension. What can I do to speed up Analyzer? Thanks for any help!

I had a similar problem and was told that Analyzer 7.0 can make a big difference. If course I was told that when Analyzer 7.0 was still in beta. I've just installed it on my system and have not had a chance to test it with the large dimensions yet, however it still seems slower than I would thinkis appropriate.

  • DW MX 2004 Slow with large files?

I'm using DW MX 2004 with a static website with a few
    thousand files.
It's very slow when opening multiple files at the same time
    or
    opening a large html file.
But DW4 is fine, nice and quick compared with DW MX 2004.
Is there any way to help DW MX 2004 work better with these
    files?
    Many thanks, Craig.

    Many thanks.
But already running the 7.0.1 update.

  • CS3 Still Very Slow with psd files

I'm still having terrible performance issues with CS3 and imported CMYK psd files containing spot colours. I have a 9MB psd file with two spot colours imported into a layer in Illustrator, with some illustrator line work on top. Just zooming in give me a 5 second screen redraw, everything is very sluggish and occasionally I get a crash. I still get these weird alert box saying "Generating Pixels" now and again when importing the psd files.
    G5 Dual 2.0GHz, 2.5GB RAM, OSX 10.4.11, Illustrator 13.02, Photoshop 10.0.1.
I'm not having these issues on a different mac running CS2.

I'm thinking it might be RAM, I have Photoshop and Illustrator open at the same time. I have around 100GB of scratch disk space.
But weirdly the slowness is not apparent using CS2. Things are just dead slow with a Photoshop file placed in Illustrator CS3. These files are only 30MB, but contain 3 spot channels + CMYK. Even with preview mode switched off, it's still very slow and I mean everything slows down.
There is a lot of disk activity going on, so maybe my hard disks on this 3 year old mac are just getting too long in the tooth.
What drives me nuts is I remember doing the same kind of work in Illustrator 8 on a G4 running System 9 and everything was MUCH faster.
Oh, and I'd better not mention how fast Freehand was for this kind of work...

  • CS3 Illustrator: Extreme slow with opening file

    Hi all,
I have the following problem on a Win XP desktop pc with 2Gb RAM:
When opening a file in Illustrator it takes up to 2 minutes before the file opens. During that time the program hangs (not responding).
The problem started last week, but before there were no problem with it.
I already browsed around a bit on the internet for a solution. I removed all the offline printers. But no change. At this moment there is only one HP officejet 7400 installed and connected.
Any thoughts on what goes wrong here?
    All help is highly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hello Harron,
First of all, thanks for your reply!
In the beginning it seemed the problem was with several files but not all files. After further investigation this morning (with the user by my side) it seemed that all the files who have the problem are versions of eachother. Other non-related files open fine, so I guess we can conclude that the problem is file related. For now, this is ok for the user, if it is only this file, as she will only have to edit the file a few more times before finishing it.
Opening Illustrator without opening a file was no problem.
    Thanks again.

  • [help needed] Javadoc problem with many files

    Hi,
I have an Ant script generating my javadoc every night. I have about 5700 java files making about 42MB of data.
It worked fine for two years until two weeks ago, where the script stopped with the following message :
    <<

    [javadoc] 1 warning

    >>
If I execute the javadoc generation on a smaller set of java source files, I still have a lot (100 displayed) of error messages like the one above (which generaly don't stop javadoc), but the generation continues :

I don't understand what's going on. It is not a memory problem since it issues an intelligible message.
I also managed to generate javadoc for several subsets, so it can't be a problem with one file or folder crashing javadoc.
    Any help welcome,
    Tug

Well, it seems that the cause was indeed an empty java file...
The generation fails if the empty java file is the set AND a refering file is in the set. If only one of these conditions are missing, then javadoc goes on...
What I don't understand is that the empty file used to be here since may 2005 and the referring class is unchanged since 2004... it never bugged javadoc before.
    Creepy...

  • Finder Very Slow - Folders with Many Files

I've recently noticed that whenever I use Finder to access folders that contain a large number of files (100 or more files in a folder)... it seems to take an inordinately long time for the files to be displayed. Being relatively new to the Mac world and maybe not fully cognizant of some of the finer "tweaking" options....
Is there any way to speed up Finder's response on these types of (large file count) folders?
(When using Parallels/Windows on my Mac, I can open this same folders almost instantly; no delay when using the My Computer or Windows explorer apps)

    Rick,
The folders (that seem to take sooo long to open with Finder) are on my Mac and some are also on a networked drive. The folders were created using Finder. The files contained in these folders are various types, JPG images, MP3, DOC, XLS Spreadsheets, and/or miscellaneous data files.
The only thing that all of these problematic folders have in common is that they contain a large number of files; some folders with as many as 400 files....

  • Bridge slow to open folders with many files

Running Bridge CS3 on XP with 2GB of RAM, if I attempt to open a folder with, say, 80 or more RAW files, each about 6-7 MB, Bridge takes 20 minutes or more, or maybe even locks up. But if I split the folder into two subfolders, each with no more than 40 files, Bridge opens them up one at a time relatively quickly. Have others experienced this, and is it simply a limitation of Bridge or do I need more memory or processing power?

    Hi Michael.
That depends on when you are referring to. When you import files into Bridge the program first sorts the files into the order specified in the 'Filter' panel. Next it creates the image thumbnails - this can take a considerable time if you have 'High Quality Thumbnails' ticked in Bridge Preferences, as Bridge then has to create it's own colour managed thumbnails rather than use the ones embedded in the imported files. The time to create the high quality thumbnails is also increased when indexing RAW images, as they contain more data.
Once the initial indexing and creation of thumbnails is complete for the folder then subsequent openings of the folder should be much faster.
If you have a folder containing several hundreds of images this initial indexing can be a pain, so I usually go off and do something else.
BTW, if you interrupt Bridge while it's going through this initial indexing of a folder then it will attempt to resume next time the folder is accessed, so it's better to let it finish and get it over with - you can tell where Bridge has got to by the '%' indicator at the bottom left of Bridge.

  • Internet browsing slow with dual monitors.

Hello guys!  I just bought a 2009 2.26GHz 8-Core Mac Pro with the GeForce GT120 and 32GB RAM running Mountain Lion 10.8.4.  I'm running it on dual 22" 1080P Dell monitors, one out of DVI and the other out of the mini displayport to DVI adapter.  My issue is that whenever I'm browsing the internet while doing another task, like transferring files or something, internet browsing load times are extremely slow while the task is running.  I found interestingly that it has to do with the two screens.  While I'm performing other tasks and browsing the internet at the same time, I keep the task on one screen and my browser on the other.  While the other task is running, internet browsing is drastically slow.
What I found is that if I drag the internet window onto the same monitor as the task (or vice versa), internet speed is not affected by the task running and it runs at it's normal fast speed.  But as soon as I move the internet to a separate screen, the browser loading speed drops again.  Seems like the mini display port monitor is the slower one.
Does this sound like a weak video card issue?  I was looking into the ATI 5770, even though Apple doesn't support it with the 4,1 and lower.  But I don't wanna drop $200 on this thing and still have the same issue.

Firstly "not supported" is based solely on one small audio over HDMI only. It works in mine (1,1) and all Mac Pro models.
Two Dual Link DVI - not sure where or why - are you saying your card isn't Apple OEM and has a MiniDisplay port? Maybe its flashed. Where did it come from? is this one of the group of 4,1 that OWC is now selling?  sounds like it (32GB could be overkill, while 2.26GHz model really hurt in the MHz dept)
    And 5770 would be $249.
Want to improve performasnce, invest $100 into SSD and move all the non-OS to a 2nd media and data drive.
Made sure you didn't carry over any PowerPC from 10.6.8?

  • FCP 7 slow with many stills.  rMBP with 16 GB RAM?

I'm editing documentaries that are heavy heavy with stills, and they must be high res.  I'm frustrated with my 3 year oldl MBP's sluggishness and looking at getting something new. I am considering the 16 GB rMBP in order to have the high RAM, but will this solve the problem I'm having?  I also need to have other things open when I work -- i.e. to search Google for info, to read MAIL, to work on paper cut on WORD.  My MBP just can't seem to handle it all.  PLUS i am storing everything on hard external drives, so they are also churning (most are firewire 800).
I've read lots of debates about the new MBP and the only real reason I'm considering the retina is the option to get 16 GB RAM, but is there an alternative option to have fast/more capable of handling it all?
I'm not a professional editor/ I'm a producer of oral history based documentaries and it's just simpler to do the edit myself usually, so I'm not very sophisticated about some of the technical aspects of things.
I do very simple things in FCP 7 -- cuts, fades, cross fades.  combining interviews with film clips with photos and music.  nothing else flashy.  Maybe I don't even need to be using FCP???
thanks for the time to listen to my challenges!

More RAM is not going to help you with FCP 7. (FCP X, however, would gladly use as much RAM as you can stuff into the beefiest of workstations.)
I don't own the new MBP, but the people who do (including family members) tell me it is crazy fast. TB is obviously going to be a huge step up in speeds – although selection of drives is limited.
I suspect your current speed issues are related to your stills. Final Cut will gag on a lot of  high res images – and those > 4K will sometimes crash it. So if you want a more pleasant editing experience, resize your images to something approximating your sequence size. I routinely size mine in PS to a 1920 preset…except those that I'm going to put pans and zooms on. In the latter case, I might bump it by a factor of 1.5 or 2.0, depending on the move. What I don't do (anymore) is lay a bunch of 18 mpx images on a TL, when I know FCP is just going to discard most of those pixels anyway.
    Good luck.
    Russ

  • Mounting CIFS on MAC with large file support

    Dear All,
We are having issues copying large files ( > 3.5 GB) from MAC to a CIFS Share (smb mounted on MAC) whereby the copy fails if files are larger than 3.5 GB in size and hence I was wondering if there is any special way to mount CIFS Shares (special option in the mount_smbfs command perhaps ) to support large file transfer?
Currently we mount the share using the command below
    mount_smbfs //user@server/<share> /destinationdir_onMAC

If you haven't already, I would suggest trying an evaluation of DAVE from Thursby Software. The eval is free, fully functional, and supported.
DAVE is able to handle large file transfer without interruption or data loss when connecting to WIndows shared folders. If it turns out that it doesn't work as well as you like, you can easily remove it with the uninstaller.
(And yes, I work for Thursby, and have supported DAVE since 1998)
