Smb error in 10.4.3 to 10.4.5 - ok in 10.4.0

I'm trying to use a G5 on a corporate Windows network. When I do a clean install of 10.4.0 on a drive, I can connect to our Active Directory network without changing any settings at all - I just use Go/Connect to Server, enter the path to the share, it asks for my username and pw, and I can connect. Very nice.
If I do a combo update to 10.4.3 through 10.4.5, I can no longer connect to the network. I get this error message:
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "smb://<server>/<sharename>" could not be read or written.
(Error code -36).
The Console looks like this:
mbgetmem(449): incomplete copy
mbgetmem(449): incomplete copy
mbgetmem(449): incomplete copy
mbgetmem(449): incomplete copy
mbgetmem(449): incomplete copy

mbgetmem(449): incomplete copy
mbgetmem(449): incomplete copy
mount_smbfs: can't get server address `<servername>':
Unknown host
mount_smbfs: can't get server address: syserr = Network is down
If I attempt to connect using the IP address rather than the path, I get this error message:
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "smb://<IPaddress>/<sharename>" could not be read or written.
(Error code -36).
And the console looks like this:
mount_smbfs: negotiate phase failed: syserr = Software caused connection abort
If I re-install 10.4.0, I can connect again.
Does anyone know why 10.4.0 works "out of the box" for me and later versions don't? And how I might alter settings in later versions to work like 10.4.0? BTW, I can't alter any settings on the server - I need to do this from my end. My current workaround is to re-boot from a 10.4.0 drive when I need to access the server.
I've done a LOT of searching on the web and in the forums and have found a variety of solutions but none have worked for me. Thanks for any comments/advice.

Thanks for your reply.
1) I tried renaming /private/etc/smb.conf to smb-OLD.conf and restarting. I still couldn't hit the server, and when I ran testparm after that, it said that it couldn't find smb.conf. So it didn't create a new smb.conf file. (Please excuse me; I'm not very technical and I barely understood your reply!)
2) I also tried turning windows sharing off and back on; still can't hit the server.
3) I removed SMB in Directory Access, rebooted and re-enabled it, but I don't have any workgroup or wins settings to fill in. When I boot from my 10.4.0 drive (which IS able to log on to the server), workgroup is set to Workgroup, and wins is blank.
When I run testparm booted from my 10.4.0 drive, the settings are exactly the same as what I see booted from my 10.4.5 drive.
This is driving me crazy. Thanks again for your help, and again, any advice is welcome.

    Hi
If you browse the forum there are a number of posts similar to yours. See here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxserver1053comboupdate.html
I would make sure you have a fallback position first before applying the update as well as going for a manual download rather than using Software Update. By fallback I mean a bootable clone of the Server prior to the update. Try not to clone a 'live' Server.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1142
Explains what the update 'fixes'. Of particular interest is:
    File Services
Addresses an issue that could cause the AppleFileServer process to stop accepting connections while
consuming most of the available CPU time on the server.
The smb.conf file is updated to include the line "acl check permissions = no" in order to provide
expected permissions behavior for Windows clients connecting to the SMB service.
It's not something I would do but you could forego the update and amend the smb.conf instead.

Known problem for years now. Duly ignored by Apple, they know best anyway. Search for smb.conf to see what I mean.
What is your setup, it would help us trying to fix your problem.
Beginning of rant (just incase one of those ubercool Apple people are reading this)
I had everything working fine for a week or two, added a new machine to the network and hey presto everyone can;t access the company NAS. That means once more nobody on the iMacs can access CAD files, so its move to Dell time. I am getting sick of this. Apple want money for tech support to fix THEIR PROBLEM.
Apparently they re-wrote Samba due to their control freak attitude to the OPEN SOURCE licence Samba Org are using. They are 10x worse than MS, money grabbing arrogant prats.
As I stated before, if Apple can't provide stable Enterprise solutions then leave the market alone. They make very good looking toys that play well together but don't like sharing with anything other than Apple. I would say they are the racists of the computer world, they don't like anything "non-Apple".
    Rant over.

  • SMB errors copying from Windows Mac serv - "Not Enough Free Disk Space"

Mac OS X 10.5.5 server with 4TB usable internal space (RAID5 volume) shared out via SMB so that windows workstations (XP Pro SP3) on local subnet can mount them.
when copying files from internal drives on workstations to SMB share on the Mac fileserver, I get no problems. When copying files from external (USB 2.0) drives from workstation to server, i get constant errors of:
"Cannot copy x: There is not enough free disk space. Delete one or more files to free disk space, and then try again."
I've tried all different combinations of SMB settings with permissions and opt locks etc, but so far found nothing that works.

  • Strange SMB error for accessing folder

    Hello,
I have this kind of problem here in my company.
I have a AD domain with Xserve binded to it, and with OD configured as Master Directory.
From a Server i try to connect to a shared folder, all was done, until I try to go into an internal folder. Then I receive a "Denied Access" error. I use the domain admin account. But the network is up (I know, since I am moving files from the other server).
When connecting from inside the office (not via VPN) all is well.
    What gives?

before i noticed these error messages happening in the background shell window of rdesktop, i tried to see if the problem was on the output itself, so i tried to play an mp3 to see if my amplifier was correctly pulling the signal from the arch box, and i couldnt play an mp3 either, but this may be related to smb:// errors.  i will tackle that one later.  finally i heard an error beep through my speakers which means archbox is outputting sound correctly, then i saw the error messages which is basically saying that something is tying up my audio device.
what could be tying it up?

after ending process of knotify the sound is back.  so do i check into a problem with knotify?  when i end the process, it does come back, so i wonder if the next time knotify has to output a sound this will happen again, or some condition unknown will cause it to happen again.
this could be a kernel problem correct?

In Windows XP, in "Sound and Audio Divice Propierties", in tab "Audio", in group box "Sound Playback" Default Divece is "Crystal WDM Audio".

  • Users are unable to login (HD is located on an AFP or SMB server message)

I've searched on here, but nothing I've tried helps.
This is only happening on certain machines in a building. They have all been re-imaged multiple times. Other machines in other buildings running the exact same setup work fine. It's a 10.4.7 client trying to login to a 10.3.9 server. They get the AFP or SMB error message. They can go to another machine in the building, and login, so it's not their account.
The only thing that I've found will temporarily fix the problem is restarting the server. Right after it comes back up, they can login fine.
I've triple checked their account settings, created brand new user accounts, we've re-imaged the machines, changed computer names (worked for half a day), trashed the DCHPleases file on the server, ran all updates on both clients and server.
    Help me!!!
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

This error msg means that the users area is stored on an AFP volume, ie the server which needs to be mounted onto the client mac before the user logins.
What happens is the server boots up, and has share points, /Users for users area. the client then boots up and automounts this volume as /Network/Servers/servername/Users or close to that.
Then a user logs into the login window, the server authenitcates the user and tries to grant them access to the Users volume, if this volume has been unmounted then they user cant get access to thier home folder and thus cant login
This could be caused by network issues, switches, hubs, etc and the client has been cut off from the server, a reboot of the client mac should fix the issue. Then check your switches or hubs

    Hi,
The issue could be that you transfer data over SMB by using certain RDMA-capable network adapters, the RDMA connections may fail back to TCP.  You could install update 2919355 to resolve the issue.

  • Smb server dont work with Lion

    Hello everybody,
I have a NAS IcyBox NAS5220 configurated with SMS Server that stopped working when I upgrade to LION.
I have other MAC without Lion and the NAS work very fine. The Lion give a error message " I don´t have permission to open this file".
    Thanks for help.
    Best Regards
    Jose Dias

I thought NTFS write was OK as soon as it is a Windows OS shared drive - at least I never had any problems writing to a shared NTFS drive on Windows Server 2003.
You should also make sure that the username that you use to connect to an NTFS share has full read/write rights.
That's all I can think of, unless some Apple gurus can figure out your smb error message.

  • Problems copying to SMB network drive

In glancing at the forum posts, I see that most people are having problems with SMB network drives. I thought I would post my experiences and see if they might lend some insight into correcting the issues.
I recently purchased a Coolmax CN-350 NAS, which works as both a SMB and FTP server. It shows up on my list of Shared drives just fine in the sidebar, and I can connect to it just fine through the finder. However, copying to the drive produces a "The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “About Stacks.pdf” can’t be read or written.(Error code -36)" error. The item I copy (text file, movie, pdf, etc) shows up on the drive anyway, but it is empty. Nothing new so far, based on what I've read in the forums. I tried copying some files to the NAS drive via FTP and they seemed to transfer just fine. I also can copy files to the NAS via SMB using muCommander. Saving to the NAS from some applications that I've tried so far seems to work (TextWrangler, Pages, Preview) though not from others (QuickTime Player, Illustrator CS3, iTunes). I can't double-click to open the files I created, or moved to the NAS via FTP, but in all cases I've tried so far (movies, pdfs, text files) I can open them from within the application.
Copying from the NAS seems to work without any issues. Files copied over to the NAS via FTP will copy back to the Mac without any errors, and the copied files will open just fine when I double-click them on the Mac, with no information lost.
I've tried some of the solutions & workarounds proposed in the forums here (numerical passwords, logging into the directory directly rather than just attach the drive directly, etc) but from what I'm reading around here, the problem seems to be with the Finder and how it sees the SMB drive. As a side note, when I checked Console, the message it gave for when I tried to use the Finder to copy files to the NAS, it gave the following message:
"10/30/09 9:45:05 AM kernel smb_maperr32: no direct map for 32 bit server error (0xc0000161)"
I'm hoping that this might help someone more clever than I, or perhaps even someone working on 10.6.2 so that this issue can be resolved in the next update. I'd like to think that this isn't some sort of subtle sabotage on Apple's part to try and encourage people to buy Time Capsules; they are cool of course, but I really can't afford one just to make NAS easier. Hope someone can make use of this.

Pretty much same story here. After upgrading to Snow Leopard I could copy things from the SMB drive to my local drive, but not open them by double-clicking.
I also got the -36 error code when I tried to copy files from my local drive to the SMB drive. BUT until about a week ago, I was able to copy the files via the terminal but that stopped working this weekend, which was kind of strange.
I installed the .2 update tonight hoping that would fix it but it didn't. I looked in the console and spotted the SMB error. Searched on Google and this was one of just four results! But I did search for the whole log entry.
Anyway Joseph, if you do find a solution, please post it here and I promise to do the same.
    Good luck!

  • Installing MF4320d Canon on Snow Leopard 10.6.4

    Hello!
I've a serious headache since yesterday, when I bought Canon MF4320d.
Yesterday I connected it successful, first like scanner (using Euro-version of software Mac Scangear MF V1.20 EN.dmg).
Then I spent hour trying to connect it like printer. And finally - it works!
In printers list there where line "Multifunctional (not definitely so, I have a russian localization of Mac OS)", printing from word, printing pdf-documents - all was fine. But scanner didn't work. And I tried to install Mac Scangear MF once again. After reboot scanner was ok, but printer didn't work.
Then I tried different drivers, always cleaning system before installing new driver. (using console, sudo and rm, cleaning scanner and printer files, drivers, plists and so on).
The biggest success I've made - is printer name in list while trying to add new one. When I add it and try to print - process fail with 10322 error.
Connectign to Windows-PC work without any trouble. When I try to connect to printer by smb - error -50 raise.
I am confused by different verions of drivers. So I really need your help.

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Sorry to read that the installation caused you so much trouble. It should have been much easier than that.
For your information, there is only one printer driver that is compatible with the MF43xx series and that is the Canon UFRII v2.xx driver for OS X. The printer does not support any other printer language such as PCL or Postscript so there are no other driver options available. Also the driver is not included with the Canon Driver Update v2.3 provided by Apple - it only contains drivers for the Canon inkjets.
So with the Canon UFRII v2.xx driver installed on the Mac, when you select to add the printer you have to select the Default view (press the Default icon in the Add Printer browser). The MF43xx should appear in the list - and if the model also supports faxing you will also see the model listed with FAX after the name.
Please note that for the MF43xx to appear in the Default view the printer must be connected directly to the Mac via USB cable. The UFRII driver does not support the printer if it is connected to a wireless router, such as an Airport Extreme, nor does the driver support printing when the device is connected and shared from a Windows computer.
So with the printer connected to the Mac via USB cable, after you select the printer name in the Default view, the Print Using menu will state that the appropriate software is not installed on the Mac or available from Apple. This is normal for this driver. At this stage simply change the Print Using menu to 'Select printer software' and then type MF4 in the search window that appears. This will show only the devices with MF4 in their name, your MF4320 being one of them. With the correct model selected, click OK and then Add to complete the installation of the print queue. This should then allow you to print from your apps.
With regards to the scanning, like the printing this is only supported if the MF43xx is connected by USB cable to the Mac. Also, to scan from Image Capture or Preview, you need to press the Scan button on the MF43xx. For my MF4380dn, I need to press the Scan button twice. When pressed once, the display shows Network Scanner (because the model has an Ethernet port) and pressing the Scan button a second time shows USB Scanner. I believe your model only has USB support so I would assume that you only need to press the Scan button once.
    Hope this helps you.

  • Sharing macintosh HD  on macbook pro

i am trying to setup "direct digital filing" on my HP all in one printer/scanner. works fine with my pc but when i try to scan to the folder on my macbook pro i am told the drive is full or the folder is protected. i have plenty of space and have unprotected everything in the path except the HD.
when i attempt to update the permissions for the HD, i am told the operation cannot be completed because some of the data on the HD could not be read or written. error code -36
any ideas about what this might mean? sharing works fine in other programs. why does it think the folder is still protected?

Careful about changing the Permissions on the HD, you could make it unbootable if successful.
-36 generally is an smb error...
