SMB file sharing with WinXP - only see the top level directory

What is going on here, I can't see the files under sub-folders from OS X 10.3.9? I use admin id connect to WinXP share drive.

If I go in as guest all I see is the Public folder and if I log in as an admin account (such as myself) it shows the entire HD plus all the share points I had specified. This does not help me however as I want the shares to show up for everyone on the network (without logging in as me).
Ignoring the obvious potential security issues, in the Sharing preference pane, it indicates that administrators can access all volumes. I don't have my Windows box running, but I just logged in from my other MBP. If I log in using a standard account, all I see are the public folders; however, when I log in to one of my admin accounts, I have access to the entire machine.
I do recall having some issue with XP logging in as an admin on this MBP and not seeing anything but the shared folders, but with the other Leopard box, it works as expected.
One caveat is that I cannot see any other user's folders, only those belonging to the user I am logged in as. But this is true even on the same machine - even an admin cannot casually browser another user's folders. They have red x's on them.
I do not believe WINS is a problem in this case because the same issue shows up with AFP and SMB, but I appreciate the help.
I agree it's not a WINS issue.

  • Making a slide show and can only see the top 1/4 of the bottem line of photos in the project.  help?

I am working with beat markers and it was going along fine until suddenly everything went awry.  I dropped in a bunch of photos and the last photo assigned itself a time of over 3 minutes.  Beat markers are at less than 1 second.  I have removed the beat markers for the photos I want to remove, in order to try again.  When I try to delete the 3 minute picture the entire project loses its beat markers AND on top of all of that, I can only see the top 1/4 of the pics in the bottom line of the project.  I've tried several work arounds and can't fix this.  Anyone have suggestions?

  • X-Axis of chart is too low on chart, so I only see the top half of it.

I have a chart with 2 chart areas.  The bottom area has a chart with an X-axis label, such as "Percent".  My chart is 376 pixels high.  I find that the "Percent" is sliced horizontally so that I only see the top of the
"P' and a bit of the tops of the other letters.  If I make the chart a little taller, it is still sliced.  I think if I expand it to 450 pixels high, the problem goes away, but I don't have the room.

  • Lion SMB File Sharing with Windows 7 stops working after reboot

I'm running my macmini with lion 10.7.1.  I have switched on File Sharing and ticked 'Share files and folders using SMB (Windows)' and ticked my user account.  Using the same account name and password on windows and I can access the shares on the macmini fine.
Soon as I reboot the macmini the sharing stops working and Windows just prompts for a username and password.  If I disable and enable file sharing again on the macmini then windows can access it again just fine, reboot the mac and it stops again, is this a bug in Lion or have I not got it setup correctly?

Whatever the issue is, it's still happening for me in 10.7.2

  • Lion SMB file sharing with windows "Access Denied"

In general SMB (windows) file sharing works fine on my home LAN (for Mac and Windows PCs).  However, Adobe Flash CS3 for Windows (Win7x64) yields an "Access Denied" error trying to open any FLA file shared from my Mac Mini home server running Lion.  I have double checked the permissions, and the client windows box is signing in with the correct user/password to have r+w priveledges to the files in question (rw-r--r--/644).
Copying the files locally resolves the issue (but isn't a good long term solution of course).
Is Flash is trying to take some sort of file lock that Lion's SMB/CIFS implementation doesn't support?  Any ideas?

I have this issue as well. and I have it on multiple configurations. My windows machine can't open an fla file on a osx lion share. another person working on the same project (on a different network setup) can't to it either. seems like something broke with lion that was working perfectly fine on snow leopard.

  • File Sharing with other Users on the same iMac

I am running Snow Leopard with the latest updates... I have an iMac with 3 users. All users are administrators. I will call them User 1, 2, and 3 for this discussion. I have a file in User 1 Documents folder that I want to share with User 2 and 3. I want User 2 and 3 to have Read & Write access.
I went in System Preferences > Sharing. I checked the box labeled File Sharing. I clicked the "+" button in the "Shared Folders" field and added the Documents folder from User 1 account. I then clicked the "+" button in the "Users" field and add User 2 and 3 with Read & Write access.
I then restarted my iMac and logged into User 2 and 3 account and could not access User 1 Documents folder in Finder. Is there something I am doing wrong? I do have the Firewall turned on, however File Sharing (AFP) is set to Allow Incoming Connections.
    Can someone help me here?
    Thanks in advance!

An administrative user doesn't have access to much more than a standard user - they just have membership in the admin group and the ability to elevate their privileges to access more things.
The OS is designed to restrict access between accounts, so the usual way to share things is to put them in places where the desired users have access. As mentioned, this can be the /Users/Shared folder - nothing more needs to be done to access items here, since all users on the machine can access this folder (each user also has their own particular shared /Public folder that is accessible to them).
Now, if your issue is not about accessing the files, but rather being able to +do something+ with them, one user normally doesn't have permissions to modify another user's documents since they are not the owner. This can be dealt with by either having the owner give the desired permissions, or adding +Access Control List+ entries to the folder to give additional access to items copied (not moved) there - a user's */Public/Drop Box* folder has ACL entries like this, for example.
You can use the Terminal to add ACL entries, but if you aren't familiar with using the application (or the chmod command), you might take a look at TinkerTool system for a GUI solution - I thought it was worth the price just for this.

  • File sharing with ipod touch accross the net

Can I set up file sharing to have access to my home itunes library which would be in one location on my home mac while using my touch at another location and many states away from my home box ?
    thanks

I have a similar problem - trying to share the internet connection of my MBP via airport to my ipod touch. It works sometimes. Directly after activating Internet Sharing it can load a page or two, then it usually gets stuck.
At the (apple certified) store around the corner, they were able to reproduce the problem, but said it is a software problem, rather than an airport issue.
There is another thread about random behaviour with internet sharing: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1164535&tstart=0
On a friends iBook, the same thing works perfectly...
My initial guess was a wrong mtu value - but couldn't fix it so far...

  • I closed the lower image of my persona by mistake- how do i get it back? I can now only see the top image.

There is no more "persona image" for the lower bar, only the top one. For example, i have the audrey hep. persona right now and i can see her quote and image, but then where there should be the persona on the bottom of my screen there is none. So i cannot see the swirls that comes with the persona.

  • How do I view the Horizontal Scrolling bar and status bar at the bottom of the screen. I can only see the top menus, toolbars and vertical scroll bar?

Before the most recent upgrade, the bottom horizontal scrolling bar and status bar appeared on my screen. Now since upgrading, I cannot see the. Anyone ideas how to restore them?

If you haven't already, you could force-quit Quicktime by using the menu option from the desktop (finder) and choose Quicktime.
Not sure what you have frozen on the screen, be it a failed movie, or some unusual screen shot. If you can find by date (created) you may be able to look for .mov or quicktime suffix name or other video file content to delete it.
And you may have to restart your computer and perhaps run repair disk permissions from Disk Utility's first aid on the hard disk drive in your computer.
Not sure if all that would help now, but it is something a few days late...!
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Images from iphoto appear as a long narrow strip no matter what i do, so i only see the top 10% of image

using custom idvd template, i add photos from iphoto, and they appear as a first chapter in the drop zone. when i go to play the slideshow/dvd i have a long
narrow strip showing the top 10% of the photo. i tried to change the size of the drop zone outline, and i was unable to do so. i have started with 15 images
some music. thank you for suggestions.

The dpi setting is meaningless in the case.  You will need to crop the image to the approximate aspect ratio and content you want shown and then reduce the PIXEL size of the image as need.
Keep in mind that for an NTSC DVD the entire screen size is really only something like 640 x480 pixels (in digital camera square pixel size).

  • ICloud only synchs the top level of my bookmarks (IE Win 8.1)

Many of my bookmarks are sorted into sub directories, they do not appear on my PC. However, the directories themselves do, and any bookmarks I make on the mac in Safari in the top directory DO show up in IE.
I tried searching the forums but couldn't find a similar problem. I tried all Apple's iCloud troubleshooting tips, including reinstalling the control panel, but no change (i delete everything from the PC and the empty directories are copied back to my Favorites folder). I also disabled virus protection / windows defender for the Favorites folder, no change.
I didn't see anything quite like this in the forums already - does anyone have any ideas?
    I am running Windows 8.1
UPDATE: I just thought to try adding a bookmark in a subdirectory on windows and it DOES synch back to the mac. But still not mac -> PC.
