SMB Sharing with legacy Windows application

I have recently upgraded a client's Xserve to 10.5.x (just applied 10.5.3) from 10.4.11. The environment is Windows & Mac with approximately 70 users.
Without going into all of the problems I had with this upgrade, which ultimately became a re-format/clean install from scratch, I have one outstanding issue I have no clue with.
The Engineers in this company use a legacy windows app which is required for its specific functions. The Shares on the Leopard Server are mapped as drive letters and the workstation running the app have full access and using Windows Explorer can see all the file in the share, but the legacy app cannot.
So for example the E:/sharename/userdata/job/ contains many files. Using Windows Explorer all of these files are visible and have the correct perms, but when opening the app and using its Open Dialogue Window to point to the directory, all of the many folders within the share are visible and we can navigate within them, but the app does not see any files. It gives us 3 choices when viewing the files, *.dat, *.txt and ., but none of these show any of the files.
We also have a Windows 2003 Server which is the primary domain controller and runs Exchange 2003. If we copy the directories in question to a share on it or locally to the C: drive, then the app sees all of the files and can function normally.
Other current apps like Auto Cad and Microsoft Word and Excel function normally.
Any thoughts would be appreciated and I will provide any further information regarding the SMB setup if required.
This by-the-way worked fine when the server was running 10.4.11
I hope someone can shed some light on this.

Is the legacey application's development under your control or is a canned app?
How legacey? are we talking Windows 1.0, 286, 386, WorkGroups, 95, 98, Me, NT 3.0, NT-4, NT-2000, XP?
Do you have your heart set on Screen-scraping? or would you like to throw it out for other suggestions? (maybe screen-scraping is the only answer)
Any way, would you care to elaborate a little more on what you're doing? (yes, I am one of the more curious sorts).
Java Robot in 1.3 and later will do a limited amount of what you want, but you'll definetely need something else for full screen scraping.

  • SMB Sharing with Sharing Only Account

Is there any way to activate SMB sharing with a Sharing Only account? I've created a Sharing Only account but when I go into the Sharing prefs pane under SMB it only lists normal accounts, not the Sharing Only accounts.

I'm having a similar problem...only with FTP. I created several "Sharing Only" accounts and none of them are able to connect via FTP. I'm able to connect via FTP as a user with a standard account though.

  • SMB sharing with Roku Photobridge

I'm having issues with SMB sharing, as well, since upgrading to Leopard. In Tiger, I had several shares set up (using Sharepoints) in SMB that contained video files and applications for the Roku Photobridge (which runs a form of Linux), and everything was working perfectly. However, since upgrading to Leopard, I can't get the Roku to connect (I keep getting "Port 139 closed" messages on the Photobridge, even though Portscan shows that port 139 is, indeed, open). I realize this is perhaps a little off topic here, but I'm hoping that someone here has a Photobridge and has gotten this to work. I haven't had any luck on the Roku forums; almost everyone there uses PC's rather than Macs. I've had to switch back to Tiger (thank god I cloned my boot drive before upgrading) so that I can use the Photobridge.

No other Photobridge users out there?

  • Wired (Ethernet) Mac Mini file sharing with wireless Windows 7 PC

    Hi Guys,
I'm new to the Mac experience having just bought a Mac Mini so be gentle please. I have the Mini connected to my router & internet the via Cat5 Ethernet cable. I also have a Dell Notebook running Windows 7 connecting wirelessly to that router. How do I get these 2 power-houses of the home computer industry to share files?

Well with 10.6 and windows file sharing follow these steps:
    1. First in windows 7 go to Control Panel. Then in the File sharing panel don't do a Home Group because this is for Windows 7 networks ONLY!. Use the Advanced file sharing to share files.
    2. While still on Windows 7 go to Control Panel-System and get the workgroup name or change it to you want. Also while still in 7 click on the start button in the search box type: cmd . The command line will come up and on the first line type: ipconfig /all . Then write down the Windows 7 IP address (you will need to know this info).
    3. Now in 10.6.x open System Preferences->Network pane, Advanced button. In the drop-down click on the WINS tab and put in the name of the Workgroup name and at the bottom of the pane hit the + button and add the IP address of the Windows 7 machine.
    4. Now click on OS X desktop and click on the Go menu name. In the drop-down select "Connect to Server" . When the panel opens up put in your Windows 7 IP address and connect. The keyboard shortcut for the Connect to Server is the Command key+k. Then log in the Windows 7 with the Windows 7 username and password.
    Any questions?
One more thing: read the how to File Sharing: Snow Leopard And Windows 7.

  • Recording Captivate 4 with WPF windows applications

Is anyone having issues recording captivate sessions using a WPF windows application. Specifically, I lose my ability to view data in any drop down control, although the data is there as I can retrieve it using the keypad. I have also had issues with the application locking after clicking on the drop down arrow. I have been assured by the development group that they have stuck to standard WPF controls, not any exotic third party controls. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi there
Hmmm, this makes me wonder if WPF is what's used for presenting the Advanced Actions in Captivate. I say that because I personally had issues with capturing this area in Captivate.
One suggestion is to establish a remote desktop control from the PC with Captivate. You actually run the problematic application on a separate PC. You control it remotely from the PC where you have Captivate installed. Because it's simply a windowed application on the PC where Captivate is installed, you can usually overcome any incompatibilities between the application and Captivate.
    Hopefully this helps... Rick

  • Support for Desktop Sharing with Jabber Windows and without CSF

    Hi,
is there a official Cisco say, that Desktop Sharing with Jabber is only supported with the Desktop Softphone mode (CSF-Device)?
Somebody has a link? Or is it supported with the normal deskphone? Which version of jabber and CUP&IM?

    Hi
I can confirm that Cisco Jabber 10.5 supports desktop sharing with both CSF and Desktop mode. It also supports Conference desktop sharing, and desktop sharing through regular chat (No active call)
We are running CUCM 9.1 and IM/Presence 9.1, so  our platform is not the newest.
You will need the new media driver as well, Cisco Media Services Interface 4.1.2.8049.

  • Internet sharing with a Windows PC

I have read and re-read many sites and tutorials on how to set up Internet Sharing from a Mac to a Windows XP Home pc, however I have not mananged to get it to work. I want to be able to use the internet on the PC as the modem is broken, so I thought I could just connect to the internet on my iBook and then share the connection over to the PC.
The configuration so far is my iBook running Mac OS 10.3.9 connects to my dial-up internet connection, and I have an Ethernet patch cable (and not a crossover cable. I'm guessing this doesn't matter due to MDX/MDX-IX). This patch cable connects it directly to the PC. The connection establishes at 100MB/S, and pinging either computer works fine, as does FTP and other protocols.
However, even though I have enabled internet sharing on the Mac, I cannot seem to use the internet on the PC no matter how many different configurations I have tried.
Another thing I have tried is using the Mac as a proxy server, this does not work though as the Apache web server page always comes up.
Am I missing something here? It will probably have been right under my nose all the time but please help. Thanks

Hello everyone, right now I have a problem quite similar. First, I have both a Mac and a PC which connect both to a Linksys Router WRT54G, Both have internet connection well. Here is the issue.
If I turn on my PC and then turn On My mac, I wait until both are at the login screen, I log in, first PC then Mac, I go to my PC and do ping to the Mac IP address, if I AM LUCKY I can see the PC shared folders on my mac. but if I do ping first on the mac I won't be able to see the PC shared folders. I say if I AM LUCKY, coz I only can connect every once in a while, it's pretty rare actually. I use the PC via ethernet connection and the mac via airport, and they used to be quite good before, I haven't installed anything unusual lately on either both so I don't think there is a problem with any app recently installed, and as I say, every now and then I get connected so, if there was a problem with an app, I wouldn't ever be able to connect. at least that's what I think.
I have checked the pages linked on the other message, but won't help, I don't have any more ideas for the moment, and even though every now and then I can do magics to connect them, I'd like to find a definitive solution, I don't like my machines to work half good.
good care, I appreciate any help. thanks

  • File sharing with a Windows XP computer

I have tried to connect my new Macbook with my home network but one of the PC will not file share. The message I get on the mac is "the operation cannot be completed the original item Share File cannot be found". I have no trouble sharing files with other PC's on the network. Thanks for any help.

    Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply. All the other PC and my Macbook can share files it is only the one PC that will not share with all the other computers. It does not ask for a log in prompt but states that I might have to see the network administrator to access the network. I hope this information is what you need to help me if you need more please ask and I will try to furnish it. Thanks again!

  • HT3986 I have a Macbook Pro, have recently upgraded to OS 7, have installed the bootcamp option, and am not getting any sound with using windows applications.

I am getting no sound with I use windows programs on my Macbook Pro. I am operating with the bootcamp option. The sound works fine with I am running the MAC OS 7
I read that my problem could be a driver, but I am unsure how to get this driver and how to install it.

Read the Boot Camp installation guide http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.7.pdf. You download the drivers during the installation process. Then you install the downloaded drivers after booting into Windows. You can also go to the source to get the sound drivers for your comuter. Search this forum and you will find posts with the url  from which to download the drivers.

  • How do Map files work with a Windows application?

I need confirmation on how map files work.
I have created a map file previously and have updated the HTML help with a few new topics and changed the Title on a handfull of topics.
The map file setup is done for the new topics, but I am thinking I need to "fix" those topics whose title has changed.
I have opened the Map.h file I created and looked at the references, for simplicity sake lets say it looks like this:
    #define Dials_Setup 1
    #define Project_Setup 2
    #define Scenario Scenario_Setup 54
I assume the mapping process goes like this:
    (1) I hand off map file and the CHM help file
    (2) Developer addes the ID of "2" to the Project Setup window form
    (3) When the user is on the Project Setup window, they press F1
    (4) The Project Setup window form gets the ID of "2"
    (5) The Map.h file translates the "2" to "Project_Setup" topic title
    (6) The CHM is opened to the topic with a title of "Project_Setup"
So, if I changed the title of the topic from "Project_Setup" to "Project_Setup_Window" would I have to update the line item in the Map.h file from "Project_Setup" to "Project_Setup_Window" for the mapping to work and the client to see the correct topic when the press F1?
I am thinking these all need to be in sync between the Map.h file and the CHM file.
As always, thanks for any guidance.
    Michael F Weart

    Hi, Michael
You have it right - basically. I'll just add a few notes.
Yes. Typically you would give the .h and the .chm file to the developer. However, sometimes the developer will give you a .h file created from their IDE tool (e.g., Visual Studio). In that case, you would Import the .h file into your RoboHelp project and map it that way. Or it can be a combination as long as there are no duplicates of Map #s or Context IDs. Another tip: You can also generate a Map File Report (Tools > Reports > Map IDs) which can be a handy guide for the developer.
Note: The alphanumeric string for the Context ID (sometimes also called a Topic ID) does not necessarily have to be formed from the Topic Title. The reason it may seem that way is because RoboHelp uses the Topic Title as a matter of convenience to help you keep track of the which topic is being mapped.  The main thing is that there are no duplicates and RoboHelp has a report for that as well. In Microsoft HTML Help (.chm), the actual mapping from the .h Map # to the URL of the actual topic can be found in the .ali (alias) file which can be found in your Project root. The .ali file is compiled into the .chm itself.
Here is a good Online Help topic with more details:

  • Used a mac to load songs, now sharing with a windows netbook.

My brother is in the hospital for awhile and someone gave him a iPod. I loaded the songs from my mac because he is computer illiterate, just got a little acer netbook with windows xp. I went to visit him yesterday and downloaded iTunes to his computer but, when I plugged in the iPod it said I had to restore it to make it compatible. I was afraid this would wipe out all the songs (8GB) so I didn't do it until I am sure it is safe. So if I hit restore will I lose the songs or will they be able to play after since they came from a mac? thanks

Yes, restoring the iPod will erase all the content from the iPod and set it back to its original default settings. Your only option here really is to import the music from your computer to his, restore the iPod to reformat to a Windows compatible format, then sync the music back to his iPod.
Or if you wanted you could format the iPod for Windows, then set it up to "manually manage music and videos" by enabling this option from under the iPod's Summary tab. By doing this, you will be able to sync the iPod with multiple computers. From there you can hook the iPod up to your Mac, sync all the music back onto it, then hook it up to the netbook and either copy all the music from it to his iTunes library or just leave it alone and drag and drop new songs as you wish.
Here is more help on manually managing your iPod's contents and well as using an iPod with multiple computers.

I am building a windows 8 application that has multiple articles.  Each article will have anywhere from 0-3 videos associated with it.  I was wondering where I could find some guidelines, best practices or examples about the how best to do this

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Hi bcp1978,
    >>I was wondering where I could find some guidelines, best practices or examples about the how best to do this from a design stand point, so that app is in line with the Windows Application guidelines
To design a windows app, we need to understand Microsoft design principles first:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/library/windows/apps/hh781237.aspx Use these principles as you plan your app, and let them guide your design and development choices
Microsoft also provide a page of design guideline:
