SMC Fan Speed Well Below Minimum

I just downloaded SMC Fan Control. I set the minimum to 4k (left and right) just to start playing around with it. It says its running at 2100ish. Doesn't seem to change no matter what I set the minimums too. Anybody got experience using this app that can help?

I had it when I ran Mavericks and it messed my MacBook's logic board up. Thankfully it was less than a year old. You HAVE to uninstall it correctly or it will prevent the SMC from properly controlling the fan. Just search how to uninstall SMC fan control

  • Speed well below advertised

According to the information im given when i input my landline i am told i should have a speed between 2.5 and 7mbs with expected being 4mbs. Real world download speeds from iTunes etc normally max out at around 200kbs and various speed test and information are below. I live in a fairly rural area on the hilderstone exchange which is pretty poor from what i understand (sams exchange code: WMHIL). Because of this i would be fairly happy with my speed other than the fact that neighbours barely 100m down the lane get upwards of 4mbs results from speedtest.net. I know that he had all or part of his line replaced by BT 2 years ago which he paid for. Problem is im a fairly techy guy who likes his games and Apple TV even more so its becoming an issue.
We have had almost endless problems with our phone line since we moved in 10 years ago with noise, crossed lines and non existand broadband untill 5 years ago.
The main thing im asking is if there is anything standing out in the results below that could cause my slow speeds and if i would be entitled to a free engineer vist to check for problems and maybe even a new line to be installed?
    Thanks

  • Fan speed does not change

Here's my problem. I'm using a P4 2.6C (stock HSF) on a MSI 648F neo  motherboard and the cpu fan's speed stays at a constant 3125 rpm (max?) even when the system and cpu temps changes (idle & load). I'm using BIOS to monitor my hardware. Intel says that their stock fan has an internal sensor so that the fan's speed can vary depending on cpu and system temps. Speedfan also dosen't change the fan's speed even when I think I configured the right settings. Only corecenter when started (auto mode) was able to vary the fan's speed based on
    the temp readings. What's wrong?

I had the same problem a while ago, Artic's solution worked for me.

  • Reduce fan speed below default

Is there any way to reduce fan speed below the default values of 2000 rpm? I want to do this on a trial basis only to isolate some sources of noise.

This does not override the SMC controlling the fan.
Right. I was just trying to imply that for the users who may read this thread (or stumble across it through Google) who are not expert users should not be attempting to modify plist files to change their fan control settings. One wrong move in there (like putting 1000RPM in for the max speed instead of minimum, as you've said) could result in damage to the machine that their warranty would not cover. It's way too easy for the inexperienced user to accidentally screw something up that could seriously damage their machine.
Just to be clear: I do enjoy reading about the more "technical" way of doing things (like you've posted) but some people in the forums may interpret this as something that they can just do "willy-nilly", and I don't consider it to be like that at all. Only expert users should consider doing something along these lines.
Thank you, though, for sharing the method. I do enjoy reading things of this nature!

  • Do more HDs increase minimum fan speed?

While browsing around here I've noticed that a lot of people have a HD/Expan.. fan speed of around 500 and about the same for the power supply.
My readings are always higher (even right after switching it on when all temps are still really low): My HD/Expan fan speed is never below 800, and the PSU seems to have a minimum of 600.
I believe the reason for this may be that I have populated all four HD bays. Can somebody confirm that this would result in higher minimum default settings in Leopard?
Also, I wonder if there's a way to 'switch some HDs off'. While in OS X I only actively use two drives on a regular basis. The third one is used for TimeMachine and the fourth one is hardly ever accessed since it's my Bootcamp drive.
Any ideas how I can lower the fan speed (and hence the noise level)?

    Thanks to both of you.
I realize that more drives emit more heat; what surprised me is that even while they are still cool (30C) the fan is already up at 800rpm - where it stays even when the drives' temperature increase. That is why it appears the 800 rpm seems to be a minimum. I guess to really find out the correlation number of drive/rpm I need to remove some drives.
As for the graphic card, I have an ATI 2600 which I cleaned thoroughly yesterday after reading about the ATI 1900. Yet, not much dust at all (actually I was surprised on how little dust I found in my Mac...seen a lot worse in previously owned PCs).
Thanks for your input guys, if anyone knows something about the original question, please feel free to come forward.

  • Minimum fan speed on N650Ti PE 1GD5/OC

    Hi all,
is there any way to lower fan speed below 30% (around 1100 RPM) on N650Ti PE 1GD5/OC?
MSI Afterburner doesn't allow to setup fan speed under 30% which is IMHO really to high for idle state (GPU temperature is around 28C using that minimum fan speed).
    Thanks in advance!

There is no way to go below 30% by software. That would require modding the vbios.

  • A1212 Macbook Pro Cooling Fan Speed / SMC / Service Battery

    Background:
I've owned my A1212 Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo since launch (Thanksgiving 2006 I believe). For some time now the temperature has been quite warm - more recently my right cooling fan has intermittently sounded like a jet engine and failed to speed beyond 1,500-2,000 rpm intermittently.
    1. I ordered the correct cooling fan for A1212 right and replaced.
    2. When I rebooted Macbook Pro here is what I see for temps in hardware monitor
    AMBIENT TEMP 31C/88F
    CPU A 44C 111F
    CPU CORE 1:36C/97F
    CPU CORE 2:39C/100F
"SMART DISK" — [DOES THIS MEAN THERE IS A SENSOR THAT IS NOT REGISTERING]
The hottest temp recorded is 109F/ CPU A temperature diode
The new cooling fan is majorly cooling the mac much better than prior fan.
    3. I can't find ANY way to stop the mac from running both cooling fans at 6,000rpm
    a) reset SMC (tried holding down power button 20 seconds after disconnecting battery
    b) reboot
    c) remove smcfancontrol
    d) use smcfancontrol
    e) monitor with temp monitor, hardware monitor, istat pro
    f) no runaway processes - not even hot
    4) I notice ( this was also showing up before install of new fan) in my battery icon it indicates "Service Battery" - while I do have a 4 yr old computer there was a recall on batteries so this battery is maybe 3 yrs old and I usually use computer plugged in.
I do not have my snow leopard boot dvd readily available to run hardware test on sensors, however techtool pro does not report any issues. I have not found any terminal commands to force the fan speed down nor any indication I have any apps that are accelerating it.
It appears that my fan speeds are accelerating shortly after power up - before OS X is even loaded completely - and never slow to normal speed except when mac is asleep.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO CONNECT THE FAN INVERTED (THE TWO PINS) MESSING UP ABILITY TO CONTROL FAN SPEED?
IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I INADVERTENTLY BROKE SOME SENSOR "SMART"?
I am thinking more and more that this is hardware related like a sensor. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, while I don't have a Jet engine I have a very noisy mac

    Hi N,
SMART reports on a number of checks on the HD. I don't believe that's any part of the current issue.
I agree with you that my first inclination is toward a sensor issue; by default, if the sensor's are not reporting properly, the fans run full speed/6000RMP.

  • Macbook air 2013 minimum fan speed?

Hi, I got a new macbook air recently the 2013 model, and i was wondering what the minimum fan speed is, i read online that it was 2000, but ive installed the istats pro widget and mine appears to be running at closer to 1200rpm?

My MBA-2013 reads 1200 on iStats Pro and MacFan Control.
My mid MBA-2012 reads as 2000.
    Cheers

  • N760 TF 2GD5/OC minimum fan speed

    Hello,
I just bought a MSI N760 TF 2GD5/OC, and the performance of the fan is stunning when playing, very quiet!
Althought I can't say the same when I'm not gaming and the card is idle: the twin frozr fans are the only thing that can be heard in my silent setup :-( Even my old 5850 with stock fan was inaudible under these conditions!
It seems the minimum fan speed (set to 34%, hard in bios it seems) is overkill, and I can't get it down (20% would be reasonable I think) even with afterburner.
Any ideas, vbios mod or software that could save my day here? It is really a shame that MSI made this great card so loud (compared to others) in idle!
    Thanks for your help

    Quote
-Does my MSI 760 twin frozr gaming have 1 or 2 fan headers? because there are two fans on the stock cooling
There is just one fan header (PWM controlled).

-Is this a card made by Nvidia reference design? and if not, will my Kraken G10 still attach to the card.
No, the card is not in Nvidia reference design. It is MSI custom design and most likely based on GTX770 board design. As the Kraken G10 is a gpu only but no full cover cooler (hence it is comaptible with many card models) it should fit fine.

  • Heat questions as well as fan speed on mac pro late 2013

my temperature currently is 118 running some programs, what number should i be worried about seeing? and does it harm the computer to leave fan speed at maximum or i would guess you would do that when it gets to a certain temp? just wondering what that temp is where i should apply maximum speed to fan

you want to dig into Intel's TJMax then and even Intel isn't fully forthcoming.
People run PRIME95, do an Intel stress test (pretty sure that one is Windows only).
The fans as far as Mac Pro and what I hear just don't kick in until heat builds, and it is easier to boost and improve air flow first, then to push out hot air.
The buy that develops Hardware Monitor is very much in the know on temperature sensors. And his program will map temps over time, you can set alerts.
It doesn't take much to see 10-20*C jumps in temps from the smallest action. The 2013 is still new but people have been stressing them and looking to see how much air, how hot the exhaust, and how much noise and active the fan gets.

  • What Fan Speeds Are Normal?

My fan speeds are (in rpm): CPU-1800 HD-2200 OD-1300
Until I got the Sims 3, I didn't have a problem with the heat of my computer. But after I bought the game, I felt a need to download a fan control software to keep the temps down. I tried smcFanControl, but I couldn't get it to work. So then, I downloaded something called iMac Fan Control. It seemed to work, and I could access it in my System Preferences. But I noticed that it did something strange. Even at it's lowest settings, my fans ran just a little bit louder than they used to, so they are actually audible.
I deleted the program, but the fans still ran louder. It must have left some back-ground information on my computer. I want to get rid of it!!!
I have tried resetting the smc, PRAM and NVRAM, and started up in safe mode. Nothing works.
    I need help!

Every Mac model and size seems to have its own default minimum fan speeds. FanControl was over riding them until you were able to get all of the remnants out. Each of the steps should have allowed your Mac to resume using just its default speeds.
I use smcFanControl. I like it a lot. Plus it comes with Spanish as well! The first time you launch it smcFanControl reads your Mac's default fan speeds and creates a default set. Then I have made three more sets with ever faster speeds that I use under different circumstances which cause my temps to rise. Here in Monterrey we have had weeks of right about 40°C every day. I have no air conditioning, only a fan. I have a Hot and a Really Hot set of fan speeds as it gets warmer in the house during the day. Also a set for when I use my EyeTV Hybrid connected to cable television and using an ext HDD as a DVR.

  • I need help with SMC fan control?

I recently installed smc fan control but everytime I open it I can't get the minimum fan speed below 4200 rpm's, anyone have any ideas what I should do?

You don't need smc fan control, just Mac, more accurate to say SMC automatically control fan at proper speed.
If it's not proper speed you think, resetting SMC could solve it.

  • IMac (Late 2006) fan speed is 4600 rpm and nothing will change it

I just brought my iMac 24" 2.16GHz Late 2006 back from the Apple Store today and the ODD fan is running at 4600 rpm!!! The noise it generates is way too loud. It is comparable to the wind tunnel G4 I replaced. Any thoughts on how to lower the fan speed?
I took the iMac in on 12 Sep to repair microphone and video crashes. They repaired the mike and replaced the video card with an NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT. I picked it up on 3 Oct.
I have SMCFan and iStat Pro installed to monitor and adjust the minimum fan speed. I tried the usual troubleshooting steps (e.g., reset PRAM, Safe Boot, ran troubleshooting utilities, etc. to no avail.

    David,
Looking through my old posts to refresh my memory, my face is red as *I AM* mistaken:O
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4064287&#4064287
I was recalling that Intel iMac users were doing the wrong SMC result three years ago (actually they were doing the SMU reset that was for the pre-Intel G-5 iMacs), and that you and I explained to them the correct way - which is of course what you recommended above:D
Nevertheless, since there is no further risk of causing the fans to race in this instance, I would myself do the wrong SMC reset method, and if it does not work, turn right around and do it the way Apple recommends. This still might result in correcting the problem.
By the way, it was widely reported three years ago that the SMC reset was frequently not successful on the first attempt, so the alternative is to try this harmless procedure at least several times before giving up on it.

  • Unusual Fan-Speed (up to 6200rpm @ 92°CPU), MBP 2011/ OSX 10.10.2

    Dear Community,
    I've got a problem with my MacBook Pro (late 2011) [2.4 Ghz/ 16GB RAM (upgraded)/ 256 GB SSD (upgraded)/ 500GB HDD (internal, upgraded (instead of DualDrive, iFixit-slot)).
Since last week I am observing that the fan of my Macbook revs up pretty high and pretty quickly up to 92° CPU temperature @ 6200rpm of the fan according to iStats Pro. This can happen in idle as well as load of any kind. I already cleaned the fan. Never experienced it before. Pretty unusual behaviour.
Do you have any suggestions/ guesses/ tips/ help for me? Thank you very much in advance.

Thank you very much for your answer, OGELTHORPE.
I actually did reset the SMC several times the last few days and also observed unusual behaviour by the use of the Activity Monitor – with no result.
The CPU temperature as well as the fan speed can be at a top level without many processes at all. Happened right before I posted my question just after the last start of the system. Of course it also happens when I run a whole bunch of applications, but even in that case it differs. Sometimes it goes up, sometimes it's totally normal. That's why I called it "unusual".
Any further ideas besides the SMC reset?

  • Fan speed problem Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC - please help

Please HELP, I have a fan speed problem with my Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC
This is a NOT an Intel machine. I am running Mac OS X v10.5.8
    Power Mac G5 - PowerMac 7,2 - Power PC 970 (2.2) - 1.8 GHz with 2 CPUs - L2 Cache (per CPU) 512 KB - Memory 8 GB - Bus Speed 900 MHz - Boot ROM version 5.1.5b1
I have included below Links to download a sound file (.m4a) that I recorded of the fan speed problem and both a .pdf and .spx files of my system profile.

When did the fan problem start?
After I replaced the mother board on the computer.
Why did I replace the mother board?
Because the experts at apple agreed with my diagnosis that the major crash problems & kernel panics must have some thing to do with a logic board gone bad. They would not work on it, because this Power Mac G5 dual 1.8 GHz machine is now a legacy model.
What I have done to attempt to fix my fan speed problem? yes I checked the obvious things, here is a list:
    1) yes I checked to be sure that the new mother board was the same part number as the original one, and that all things that were unplugged from the old mother board - were actually plugged into the new mother board.
    2) all the fans work, I can see them spinning if I use a flashlight and look at them (cover on and off to get at some of them)
    3) check all RAM to make sure: a) it was installed properly b) that the RAM worked using TechTool Pro c) even started the machine with only the original RAM that came with it.
    4) I installed a Temperature monitor - to see if there was something reading as very hot inside that was causing the machine to continually run the fans at a high speed. No, no heat issues that I can see. Here are the reading from the sensors in degrees fahrenheit, 2009-10-11 16:11:01 -0500
    CPU A Die Temperature: 75.7℉
    CPU B Die Temperature: 81.5℉
    Drive Bay: 68.9℉
Main Logic Board Air Inlet: 64.8℉
    Main Logic Board Ambient: 73.6℉
    Main Logic Board Backside: 76.3℉
    Memory Controller Heatsink: 93.2℉
    Processor Card A Ambient: 77.5℉
    Processor Card B Ambient: 77.0℉
    5) zapped the PRAM
    6) followed the SMU reset instructions for
    Power Mac G5 (Late 2004)
To reset the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) computer, simply do the following:
    • Turn off the computer by selecting Shut Down from the Apple menu or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
    • Remove the power cord from the computer.
    • Wait two minutes.
    • Plug in the power cord.
    • Turn on the computer.
    7) followed the SMU reset instructions:
    Resetting the Cuda/PMU
    How to reset the PMU:
    • If the computer is on, turn it off.
    • Disconnect ALL cables from the computer, including peripherals and power.
    • If possible, move the computer to a place where you are not standing on carpet.
    • Open the case and ground yourself by touching part of the metal frame inside the computer.
    • Find the Cuda or PMU button
    • Press the Cuda or PMU button ONCE. Do not press the button more than once before starting the computer up again.
    • Wait 10 seconds, then reconnect the cables you removed in step 2 and turn the computer on.
    • If the computer still does not respond after resetting the PMU, the computer may require service from an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
    8) ran disk utilities, repaired permissions
    9) found a setting in the system preferences that a chat room person suggested had something to do with fan speed. In Energy Saver, under options, processor performance was set to highest, I set it to automatic - this did not change anything that I could tell - BTW I checked my other G5 (a single processor that works fine) that is the setting that that it is set to, and it is nice and quiet.
    10) restarted the machine, ..
    11) found a Fan Control System Update - but it did not install when I tryed to install it -
    12) booted from OSX install disk and ran that disk utility
    13) used OnyX to fix disk permissions, clear caches and temp items
Nope - still have the same high speed fan problem. ... PLEASE HELP!!
I have been reading in the MacInTouch reader reports - found this: some one said to use this - thermal re-calibration using the Apple Authorized Service Providers' disk - but that's not available, at least I can not find it - anyone? have an answer to finding this - or can do it for me? I am in Chicago.

The Genius at the downtown apple store said that because it's a "legacy machine" they would not work on it, .. so should I push them?
Well, I personally think that's ridiculous, I'd Push them, I'd call AppleCare & talk up the chain if need be... there the ones that have or should have that Disc... man o man... Personally I'll never visit an Apple Store again in my lifetime, maybe try an independent AASP if none of that helps!..

Man-o-man, pop my cork before I explode on that one, if I had anything to do with it I'd close that store.
