SMC Firmware Update 1.7 has frozen MacBook Pro

Hi,
Updated to latest firmware release on MBP 2011, now I get this pixelated freeze screen at startup:
After I eventually get past the startup freeze by booting up in safe mode, the screen is pixelated:
I've performed the usual: 'Command-Option-P-R' during startup to reset PRAM; 'Hold down D key' when starting up to run Hardware Diagnostic (no problems detected afterwrds).

I guess I just fixed it. Do you bootcamp to windows? Once I changed my startup disk from the windows to the mac partition, rebooted, then dd the system update, the firmware update installed and took hold.

SMC firmware update 1.7 still reports previous version after successful installation

In the past months or so I've tried multiple times to install the SMC firmware update 1.7 on my macBook Pro. And every time, after the update, the SMC version is reported as the previous version, resulting again in the indication that a 'new' SMC firmware update is available.
My macBook Pro model identifier is: MacBookPro8,2.
The reported Boot ROM version is: MBP81.0047.B27
The reported SMC firmware version is: 1.69f3
This last version must be '1.69f4', which is SMC firmware update version 1.7.
So, I download the firmware update (.dmg), I install it, and then I check what the new reported SMC firmware version has become. And see, there it is: 1.69f3. Still not 1.69f4.
WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO GET TO THE NEW FIRMWARE VERSION AND ALSO HAVE THE SYSTEM REPORT IT AS THE NEW ONE?

I guess I just fixed it. Do you bootcamp to windows? Once I changed my startup disk from the windows to the mac partition, rebooted, then dd the system update, the firmware update installed and took hold.

Are you booting from RAID? even though it warns that you can't be booting from RAID, some people still run the update.
Any problem with your system?
While it only says that you need to quit any and all open programs, sometimes it helps to reboot (and boot into Safe Mode) just to begin the process.
When there was an SMC Firmware update before (last fall) some people also had trouble.
We aren't mind readers, and to say it failed doesn't give those of us reading this (and non of us are Apple tech support) a lot to go on.

SMC Firmware Update 1.1

SMC Firmware Update 1.1 just showed up in my software update. First off, I think I already have the latest:
Boot ROM Version: MP11.005C.B04
SMC Version: 1.7f8
Secondly, I am very chicken to run any firmware updates dealing with "The SMC Firmware Update adjusts fan behavior in Mac Pro." My fans are completely quiet.
Please let me know if I should install this.

I ran it on my octa-core. Everything seems fine. It'll restart, all fans will ramp up to full, then restart again and perform a normal boot. I checked my idle fan speeds before and after the update and they are all the same. I ran some cpu intensive tasks and the temp at which they ramp up doesn't seem to be much different. I use smcFanControl to boost my fans anyway as they don't start ramping until one of the cores gets over 200 degrees which is quite hot IMO.

Macbook (late 2006) RSS unable to install SMC firmware update

I bought my macbook on the 27th of December, and the first week it worked fine. Then started the RSS. I did some googling and found out some stuff about RSS, tried to install the SMC firmware update but it would just tell me that I don't need the update. After two weeks of constant RSS:ing I called applecare and told the guy about the problem, he told me to try to update the SMC and if I can't do it bring it in for service.
Monday the 15th of January I went to the macstation in downtown Vancouver and told them about the trouble, they tried to boot it, and it actually booted but after like 3 minutes the macbook crashed. For about 10 minutes two guys tried to boot it and so on, but they didn't get it to boot. So they took it in for service and somebody was going to check out the macbook and see if it would need a replacement logic board - which it did. So on Monday they ordered the logic board, and today Monday 22nd of January I got it back. Now the thing that bothers me is that when I now try to update the SMC firmware (my current version is btw 1.13f3) it still just says that This computer does not need this update. oh well - i went to apples support page to try to see if there would be a newer release of the smc and then I noticed that in the bottom of the SMC firmware 1.1 update page it says:
Note: This update is only or the original MacBook, and will not install on a MacBook (Late 2006).
Then I really was like W T F?!
I would assume that people who work for apple would know that the SMC update will not update on a computer from late 2006, but nobody ever mentioned this to me.
I've now had the computer for about an hour and the CPU temperature is at about 50 degrees celcius, with firefox, msn and a terminal open... about 5% cpu load.
What I'm really wondering is that is there anyone who has similar problems with a macbook late 2006? I guess I'll just have to see if it works and just like I told the guy at macstation, if it starts RSS:ing again I'll be banging on their door

MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.3 update freezes mouse pointer

After installing the update released today 5/28 (MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.3) my mouse pointer stalls, freezes on occasion. Very annoying. Anyone seeing the same. Fixes ... ?

After applying the SMC Firmware update a few days ago, my keyboard and trackpad were acting erratic (freezing, hanging). It was immediately after the update and I had not had any problems with it before.
I have also had random crashes, inability to use the keyboard/trackpad ever since.
Today my keyboard and trackpad are completely unusable, external mouse works fine.
I will take it to an Apple store tomorrow, hopefully my firmware can be reverted.

MacBook Air SMC Firmware Update v2.0 update available again and again. How do I fix it?

I have installed MacBook Air SMC Firmware Update v2.0 three times and I still get an update available notification asking to install it again. This is a mid-13 MacBook Air running OSX 10.9.3. System info lists the SMC version as 2.13f7.
Does anyone know how to resolve this issue?

- Are there any status or error messages in /var/log/install.log
- The Firmware version it should install is 2.12f137
- If there isn't anything in the log try:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
and/or About NVRAM and PRAM
and check whether there is installation.
If no install, try OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode
then reboot normal, try the install again.

Check your Network control panel and turn off Auto-Proxy setting.
This is one of the top #4 "how can they do this' pet-peeve errors.
The other is the often slow 8 hrs to download 600MB even on 10Mb+ cable.
Another, 'the drive cannot be partitioned because there isn't enough contiguous unfragemented free space; some files are locked and cannot be moved."
If auto proxy isn't it, router/modem and DNS settings.

MacBook SMC Firmware Update 1.4

Hi ... bit confused here .. the SMC Software Update just released has an instruction that seems a bit unclear to me ...
"When your computer restarts, a gray screen will appear with a status bar to indicate the progress of the update. ........ Do not disturb or shut off the power on your computer during this update."
So - does the thing Restart itself? OR .. Do I have to restart it - even though it says to not shut off the power during the update.
I'm sitting here having done the first part and wondering whether I shut down/restart the laptop.
Any ideas anyone?

OK ... sorted ... for anyone with the same question ...
I manually did a Restart. The Firmware Installer window came up on screen and invited to close all other apps and then Press a Restart button in that window.
The machine then restarted and the Grey Screen came up with the Fans running full speed as originally stated on instructions.
On completion it then proceeded to do another re-start.
This time around, after logging in, a Firmware Installed window came up.
All seems OK now.

I have 2 original model 13" MacBooks doing the spontaneous shutdown thing. Both are running OS 10.4.11. One has SMC version 1.4f8, the other has SMC version 1.4f10. When I run software updater it comes up with 2 updates: MacBook EFI Firmware Update 1.0, and MacBook SMC Firmware Update 1.1. The first time I used the standard method of clicking on "Install 2 Items", etc. When the restart instructions came up, I clicked on restart, entered the password, and got the message: "An unexpected error occurred (0). Your Firmware cannot be upgraded."
I tried again, only I selected just the SMC update instead of both. Same result. I downloaded the package and tried to install directly instead of going through Software Updater, same result. I tried installing the EFI update by itself using different methods. Same result. Using advice from another thread, I tried opening the firmware updater application directly from the utilities folder. Still get the same error.
Anyone have any additional suggestions?

Is SMC Firmware Update necessary?

Hello there
I have the Software Update window popping up telling me to download the SMC Firmware Update. I know that the update adjusts the fan behavior in the MacBook but does anyone know exactly what it does and changes?
My MacBook has been working fine since I got it in July. No weird fan behavior nor RSD nor overheating problems (thankfully! I'm hoping it stays that way). So my question is do I need that update, or is that update only for users with those problems? If I download it, how does it alter my MacBook behavior?
Any advise is appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Honestly I was kind of like you. I downloaded the firmware but didn't install it for quite a while. My MacBook as worked fine and I saw no reason to screw that up.
But..... it got the better of me and I went ahead and installed it. I haven't noticed any difference whatsoever. Fan behavior is the same I guess because I've only heard them a couple of time so that's never been an issue. I guess it may run a little cooler but again I don't really pay that much attention to the temperature anyway so I'm not sure.
SMC is System Management Controller which is a micro-controller on the logic board that controls various functions (in this case the fan). I've never found anything specific other than some have said the fans run non-stop. Could be but I've experienced nothing different than before I installed the firmware.

Having problems with SMC Firmware Update 1.8

I installed the MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.8 yesterday and have since experienced a number of problems. I am running a 15 inch, Mid 2012 MacBook Pro, btw. First, after the intial install the sytem would not reboot. I had to do a physical reset of the SMC controller to get the system to power on again (sft-cntl-option-power key sequence). Once the system rebooted, the fan in stuck on high and the battery meter in the controll bar does not show status, just displaying an "X" in the battery. I went into the Software Update utility and the SMC update is still listed as available, I tried reinstalling it, and the situation has not changed. The fan noice is annoying and I'm aftraid to disconnect the laptop from the AC adapter. Please advise.

Firmware updates don't affect to Windows and OS X. The firmware makes your hardware work, not the operating system, so you won't have any problem doing this

SMC Firmware Update 1.7 "Installed Successfully" Multiple Times, But Still Not Installed

Software Update keeps telling me that I have the MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.7 available for my machine. I have run this update several times, both through Software Update and through directly downloading it from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
Through either method, running the update yields the same result: it runs, reports that the update is installed, restarts the machine, and all seems good. However, if I run Software Update again or check the SMC version, I still have the old SMC version 1.69f3 and the same update is still available in Software Update.
This thread -- https://discussions.apple.com/message/20649193 -- suggests running Disk Utility to find errors. I have already run Disk Utility to check for errors (multiple times) and no errors have been reported.
This thread -- https://discussions.apple.com/message/21320561 -- suggested running a clean installation of the OS. The other thread's solution ultimately also was a clean installation of the OS. Having just done that barely a month ago on this machine, I really would prefer to not do that again so soon!

Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.1 keeps repeating

Recently I had my MacPro motherboard replaced by an Authorized Repair Center, and for the most part, everything has been working great since. That said, as I've been performing my regular software updates, I've noticed that the "Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.1" keeps appearing as new update. I've installed this update multiple times now (or it seemed as though I did), but it keeps appearing with each new update.
Is there some way I can complete the update? Is it possible that there is some serial number conflict between my old/new motherboard that is preventing this? Do I need to return my machine to the repair center?

Did you actually run the update from your Utilities folder (where I believe it ends up)? You'll go through a process of rebooting and hearing the long tone / seeing grey screen and progress bar. Until it's actually run properly, you'll keep seeing reminders.
