SMC reports disk errors

Hello,
Solaris Management Console is reporting my disk as having a non-Solaris partition, negative space remaining, and overlapping partitions.
All this after a trouble free install of Solaris 10 on a checked IBM and a Fujitsu hdd. (AMD +2600 chip, ASUS A7V8X mb)
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank You,
RT

You moved the disks to another 280R, so that would seem to eliminate
the systemboard, power supplies, and cabling from hardware causes.
It also may have eliminated heat as causing intermittant disk operation.
I suggest you might have a software problem, not a hardware problem.
There have been PICLD patches, but they were rolled into the Solaris kernel years ago.
Run Explorer, and open a support case with Sun.

As a followup - right after posting this message, I opened a support case for this, and the solution is that you need to go into /etc/security/policy.conf and backup JASS's change to the default encryption model.
    Change CRYPT_DEFAULT=1 back to CRYPT_DEFAULT=__unix__
Then, you have to clear the password using "passwd -d", and then reset it again to what you want. Then, the management console will work.
I guess the management console is set to always use the __unix__ method, and not look at the policy.conf's setting. So when JASS wanders from the default, it breaks SMC.

  • 280R picld[71] reports disk errors - then says they are ok

    Greetings,
I have a 280R with two internal drives that are not mirrored.
After the server has been online for a few hours, picld reports that both disks have failed. About 30 seconds later it reports that both disks are ok.
I have taken the disks, cpu's and memory and put them in an identical 280R and i get the exact same error messages.
During this period, access to the server is intermittent and most operations fail. (which makes sense, if communications is lost with the disk). However if it is a disk issue why would both fail simultaneously and come back on at the same time as well ??
Does anyone have any ideas ?
    Thanks !

  • Hard disk errors, but can't boot from the install DVD

My mini reports disk errors when I run the Disk Utility Verify on the main boot hard drive. However, I have not been able to boot the computer from the install DVD. I try restarting while holding down the C key, and still it boots from the internal drive. I've tried option-restart, and do not get the opportunity to select a boot disk. An external USB drive, on which I periodically clone the main disk, now does not mount. Disk Utility says it too has errors, and it is unable to repair them. A third external USB drive appears to be OK.
The computer is still operating, apparently normally, otherwise. This computer should still be under warranty. I bought it in April, as I recall.
Any help will be much appreciated.

    <sigh>
I've attempted most of these things.
The drive on which I had the system clone died at essentially the same time as the problem came up with the errors on the main drive. I suspect this was due to the same root cause, or a related problem, just because of the timing. I'd cloned the main drive approximately a week previously with apparently no problem.
I also have been unable to boot from the install DVD.
The other external drive, the one that still works, is one I use mostly for rolling backups of my documents, photo and music folders. It is not big enough to hold a clone of the main drive. In any case, I'm assuming that if I attempted to clone it now, it would either not work, or I'd simply copy the errors to the clone.
I haven't used the Time Machine, since I didn't feel I had an external drive large enough to make it useful.
What 3rd party software do you recommend? Keep in mind, as I also mentioned earlier, that the computer is still under warranty, and I'm loath to do anything that could be construed as voiding the warranty.
I'm also on a pretty restricted budget, due to recent car repairs.

  • RAID Disk reporting an error 0x40, 0x51

On one of our Xserve RAIDs, we are getting an error:
    Disk 9 Reported An Error. ERROR:0x40 STATUS:0x51 LBA:0xAA010300000000
It has repeated this error a few times over the last few weeks. What does this code mean? What action (if any) should I take?

I had this same error, on two different drives on the same controller today. I called Apple Enterprise Support and they said that it's unlikely that this indicates a bad drive. They suggested that I do a hard reset on the controller, and see if the problem continues. Even if it does, it could be the controller as well as a drive.
Before I called support, I had pulled the first drive that reported the problem and replaced it with a spare. I ran tests on the original drive that had reported the problem, formatted it with zeros and with 7-pass, and it seems fine. This lends credence to the controller being the problem, since it's not an obviously bad drive.
I have to wait until the spare finishes rebuilding to reset the controller, but I'll try it and report the results.
Enterprise Support also said that these errors are probably more likely starting with firmware v1.5, as the tolerances have been tightened somewhat.
Firmware v1.5 also has a new feature called Background Array Conditioning that can be run if desired. This feature can remap any bad blocks, along with correcting "off track writes". I'll be running that after the controller reset to see if anything is reported on the drives involved in these errors.

  • Disk 6 Reported an Error

Everytime I try to add an array to the XRAID I get all sorts of notifications saying that a drive reported an error. Drive 6 seems to be reporting the most errors but each drive (1 - 6) in the array has reported errors. The typical error that drive 6 is reporting is:
    COMMAND:0x66 ERROR:0x64 STATUS:0x81
Each time the error is reported the controller restarts and continues on with creating the array.
Can anybody pass along some insight as to what this error means and how to proceed?
    XRAID   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

If you open the "Event Properties" you will probably see a message like this one:
"The drive reported an ATA error. This is a failure in the communication from the RAID Controller to the drive."
I'm not sure what the precise cause is; it could be a number of things, including the drive or the drive module hardware. I'd suggest replacing the drive module with a new one from Apple (hopefully covered by a warranty or AppleCare service agreement).

  • No disk error in Premiere Elements 12 - Smartsound plug-in?

I have a fresh install of Premiere Elements 12 (with 12.1 update) on a new computer and receive the error "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive E:" whenever the program is opened or closed. I can bypass this message by repeatedly clicking "cancel". Windows application logs in event viewer lists a corresponding error message "Activation context generation failed for C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 12\Plug-ins\Common\SmartSoundAdobePlugin64.prm". I confirmed that this file does not exist.
A forum search indicates that installing Smartsound resolves this no-disk error for PrE 11 and earlier but that Smartsound is no longer a feature in PrE 12:
Re: No Disk Error for Adobe Premiere Elements 12
But another other user reported that the no-disk problem went away in PrE 12 after installing Smartsound:
Re: "No Disk" Error (premiere elements 12)
And my event viewer error message indicates that PrE 12 is looking for a Smartsound plug-in which was not included in the installation. (PrE 12 was installed via Dell Digital Delivery and did not include an installation disk.)
So why is PrE 12 looking for a Smartsound plug-in if it is no longer a feature? Any suggestions for suppressing the no-disk error other than installing Smartsound?  I'm just getting started in PrE and don't need it right now.
    Thanks,
    Greg

Thank you for the advice. I tried Han's suggestion of installing Smartsound SonicFire first since it was much quicker than completely reinstalling PrE (which entails many hours of re-downloading on a DSL line for the program & cloud content).
After installing Smartsound, the "SmartSoundAdobePlugin64.prm" file did appear in the C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 12\Plug-ins\Common\ folder. However, it did not resolve the "No Disk" error or the application error logged in Event Viewer. The source of that error is listed as "SideBySide" and Event ID is 33. The full text of the message is as follows:
Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 12\Plug-ins\Common\SmartSoundAdobePlugin64.prm". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC90.MFC,processorArchitecture="amd64",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type=" win32",version="9.0.21022.8" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.
I did a bit of research and this answer suggests that the error is the result of an incompatibility between the installed version of Microsoft Visual C++ and the version used by the program:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/event-id-33-so urce-side-by-side/ef67e34f-07b2-4d52-a807-f9f81a7c32f8?auth=1
Based on this Microsoft article, it appears that the missing C++ 2008 version 9.0.201022.8 is an IA-64 version while the 9.0.30729.x versions on my machine are x64 versions:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973552
This is all way over my head and I may leave well enough alone until I have more time to spare, given that the "no disk" error (which could even be entirely unrelated) is annoying but not crippling.
FWIW, the machine is a Dell XPS8700, Windows 8.1, 64-bit, and PrE was sold by Dell it, bundled with Photoshop Elements.

  • Cannot Save File because of disk error

I selected 4 RAW images in Lightroom and chose the Merge to Panorama In Photoshop. After the file was created and I cropped it to my desired dimensions I tried to perform a simple save. I was asked what name to give the file and I went with the default settings and clicked OK on the Maximize Compatibility dialogue but I get an error that said "Cannot Save XXXXXX.PSD because of a Disk Error.
There are no details and not other options to find details. The drive these images came from have permissions set to Read and Write so I don't know what the issue is.

Your OS has reported a disk error - which usually means that there is a serious problem with the disk.
Photoshop is just passing along the error it got from the OS.

  • What is causing a disk error when saving psd files or writing to cache?

The problem only happens when running Photoshop CC (2104) and Bridge (actually these are the only two programs I really use my external drive for) during a save or write operation to an external hard drive.  I can work for hours, with multiple files open, saving, creating, etc. without a problem and then suddenly I'll get a message from Photoshop saying, "Could not save .... because of a disk error." or from Bridge saying, ".. unable to write to cache..".
When I quit and try to troubleshoot the problem, I find that, for some reason, Mavericks has put system files on my external (non boot) drive or, for whatever reason, thinks there is a system file on it.  Consequently, the drive cannot  be ejected (Error message: "... one or more programs may be using it...") and I cannot repair it using Disk Utility (Error message: " ... live file system repair is not supported").  I also cannot write to it (Error message: "... unexpected disk error has occurred (error code: -50)").  The problem persists even after quitting all other programs, which wouldn't surprise me if Mavericks thinks there is a system file on it.
I have force ejected the drive a couple of times but became concerned that I might be compounding the problem. Now I just restart my computer and run Disk Utility Repair Disk.  (Don't know which is worse.)  Disk Utility either doesn't find a problem or, if it finds one, it repairs it.  After that, Photoshop and Bridge work fine for a while.
    System information:
MacBook Pro 13" 2.4GHz with 16GB RAM, 500 GB HD (recently upgraded)
    Apple Cinema Display
    Mavericks (up to date)
    G-Technology G-Drive (Gen 5) 2TB HD connected via Firewire 800 (latest firmware)
Unconfirmed observation: I believe the first few times this problem occurred, Firefox was up an running.  I made a point of quitting all programs except System Monitor when running Photoshop and Bridge and I can't remember having the problem again.  The the last time the issue occurred, today, however, Safari was up and running.
Is this an OS problem, a hardware (disk drive, cable, etc.) problem, a software problem (PS, Bridge) or some combination? I have put this much detail in the post hoping someone can share some insight into the cause.  I will be sending this report to Apple and G-Technology and I will report any resolution, if and, hopefully when, I find one.

The only thing that will cause a disk error is an actual error from the disk.
Photoshop is just telling you what that OS told it about the error.
It sounds like you need to boot off another disk and try to repair your disk.
Also, make sure you have a backup. And check the SMART status to see if it is failing and needs to be replaced.

  • "Drive Reported an Error" message when burning a DVD+RW

    Hi, all!
I am trying to burn a rewritable DVD, HP DVD+RW on my Matshita R UJ 857E and each time I try I always get the following message:
    *Drive Reported an Error:*
    *Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR*
    *Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03*
This happens with a few RW DVD disks that I tried to burn. The disks are HP disks and they work correctly on a PC.
    Please, advise!

  • HELP! iTunes won't load, gives Windows - No Disk error

    This is so aggravating!
Last week I purchased $100 worth of audio books to put on my iPod for a vacation. Immediately iTunes wanted me to upgrade to 5.0, so I did. That's where the nightmare began.
With both versions, when I click on the iTunes icon (or the menu item), I get the license agreement, click "agree", then wait a moment before getting the Windows - No Disk error telling me to put a disk in "the drive" (it doesn't specify which drive). The message doesn't go away no matter how many times I click, or how fast, (I've gone into the hundreds). The only way I can get rid of it is to go into control/alt/delete and cancel the iTunes.exe process.
I have now spent about 20 hours trying everything I've seen on all the boards. I have uninstalled using Windows uninstaller; I've reinstalled standalone quicktime; I've installed with the ethernet cord disconnected and the USB's disconnected (including external hard drive); I've made sure all firewalls, etc. were off (McAfee, not Norton). I've done everything but voodoo.
I can roll back to iTunes 4.9 but it won't let me access my very expensive iTunes music and books - it just tries to take me to the music store and tells me to upgrade to 6.0!!!!!
    Can someone please help?!

  • Disk error - can't repair

    Hi,
When I startup my Imac it takes forever to get up and running. I sit and wait for the spotlight icon and the other icons at the right top of the screen to open up. When they are present I can begin working, but it takes approximately 10 minutes.
I tried a few times to run the disk-repair app. but I get a weird message that I can't understand. This is what it says ( please note - this is a translation from Danish, so bear with me )

Try to get your hands on a program called DiskWarrior.
    http://www.alsoft.com/alssales.html
If the problem is not totally hardware it should get you back going.
If it is hardware it may help you get going again so to archive important files before replacing faulty equipment.(I had some problems with a ALS iMac that DiskWarrior helped provide time to archive before computer retired.)
I hope you are able to get it fixed.

  • Disk Error Message in Photoshop 5.0 LE

    Hello,
I scanned an image at 1200 dpi (Windows reports the file size as 165 MB) and tried to open it in Photoshop and got this message:
Disk error –36 while reading or writing virtual memory file. Sorry, but this error is fatal.
I've tried changing the paging file size. I've set both my C drive and a partition (F) to 4096 MB.  I also went into "Preferences/Plug-ins and Scratch Disks" and set the Primary and Secondary to the drives mentioned above, and still get the same error message.
What am I doing wrong?  The only thing I can think of is that my computer is an older one (only a 500 mhz processor) but I don't think that should matter - then again I've never scanned at this high a resolution before either.....
    Thanks!

I'm surprised PS even runs on that computer although of course 5.0 LE is pretty old.
A 165 MB file may just be too much for it.
How can you "set your c drive to 4096MB"? Do you mean Paging file?
We need someone with a long memory to chime in, but you do need to clarify what you are doing.
