SMC solaris 10

I am unable to use the SMC in the non-global zones and undertake tasks e.g.. add users should this work

Hi guys,
I've got SMC running in a zone, first you need a whole zone. Install everything in the zone don't worry about the loopback or lofi.
If you need a how to then let me know. Just installing it isn't all the work, only today we can across another problem falling back on SMC in a zone. That's why I'm here.
Here's the problem.
We can't get a relayable communication to our Server in the DMZ.
We have IPMP on almost all our server.
The SMC sends out the commands over the IP from the zone. This goes out from the Global zone and the response comes back on a different IP to the Global zone and the response can't get to the zone.

  • Updated Java "broke" SMC (Solaris Mgmt Console)

    Hello,
    I have a SunFire 280R running Solaris 8.
The application running on the system will be upgraded soon, and required that I update Java.
I believe I've missed some steps, as the SMC (Solaris Management Console) will not run now.
I've read the SMC FAQ, but may have missed something. Any help would be appreciated.
    Before doing anything:
    # java -version
    java version "1.4.1_03"
    # cd /usr
    # ls -la java
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 6 Mar 14 2003 java -> ./j2se
I installed a recent version of Sun Java from a CD-R which I had burned:
    # cd /usr
    # /cdrom/java_1_5_0_04/jre_1_5_.sh
    agree?
    Unpacking...
    Checksumming...
    extracting...
    inflating...
    Creating
    Done.
    # /cdrom/java_1_5_0_04/jre_1_52.sh
    agree?
    Unpacking...
    Checksumming...
    Done.
After the installation was complete, I replaced the link:
    # cd /usr
    # rm java
    # ln -s /usr/jre1.5.0_04 java
    # ls -la java
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 16 Oct 11 09:11 java -> /usr/jre1.5.0_04
    # java -version
    java version "1.5.0_04"
When I attempt to launch SMC from the CDE menu bar, it tries, then fails, without a message.
When I open a terminal and type "smc", it tries, and then I get a message that there is no valid version of Java in the places that it expects it, just as the FAQ mentions, and to either fix and try again, it set $JAVA_HOME.
This is right about where my knowledge of Solaris 8 abruptly ends. If I can type "java -version" in a terminal window and get the reply "java version "1.5.0_04"" then why can't SMC find it?
I am stumped. Someone tried to help by telling me to edit the .bashrc file, and add $JAVA_HOME, but I can't find that file on this system anywhere.
I was able to get the SMC to launch once, after trying to set $JAVA_HOME, but it apparently only worked for that terminal window. After the SMC was closed, and the terminal window closed, and someone tried to launch it from a new terminal window, it didn't work again.
I'm stumped. How can I get SMC to play nice with the newer Java? I know enough to know that this is probably very basic, and I am just forgetting something obvious.
thanks very much for your help!

You can create this file by executing

  • SMC - Solaris Management Console in whole root zone

    Hi,
Is it possible to run smc in whole root zone? Is there a howto for this?
I have created a whole root zone in my x86 and sparc systems but I can't seem to manage the zones through smc (Adding users, share disks and etc).
I was able to manage my sparse zones with smc but for some reason smc won't even start in whole root zone. The whole root zone does not seem to have smcserver and bunch of other directories relating to smc.
    Thanks...

Are you maybe confusing "Sun Management Center" (this forum) with "Solaris Management Console" (a different product)?

Instead of using SMC - why not use the format command - this utility has traditionally allowed the sysadmin to perform disk related tasks. If you plan to be "playing around" with disks on a solaris system - smc is not the tool. If you had intended to use ZFS - you're stuck with the command line (really sucks if you're dependent on GUIs). Either use the free SVM command line or get a copy of Veritas Foundation Basic Suite "free" (but crippled - limited to 4 volumes and 4 filesystems) - http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/sfbasic/index.jsp. At least with Veritas - the GUI will step you thru the entire process of disk management. I can't say that for SVM, with a bit of persistence and skill - you might not be disappointed. I prefer the command line because you can specify a myriad of parameters that the GUIs can't initutively tell you.
Storage Foundation Basic 4.1 is available on the following platforms:
    * Solaris 10 x64
    * RHEL 4 (Xeon, EM64T and AMD Opteron) and Itanium 2

  • CIM Error when doing partitioning in SMC Solaris 9

Step 1. Search and read the forums for similar error solutions before posting.
Step 2. If nobody have done it so far file a bug report http://bugs.archlinux.org. (Hint: use pacman -Qo path_to_the_file_in_question to check what package owns this file - do this before step 3).
Step 3. Force an upgrade by adding f option to pacman options.

    I'll give this a shot:
Does other network traffic work? Assuming that you are new to Solaris 9, and not just UNIX in general, you may want to make sure that your network settings are correct (ip addy, netmask, default route, and so on) SMC usually starts up a network service on port 898 (IIRC), and then starts up the client (the actual GUI) and connects to itself.

    A few quick questions,
    - Is it SMC 2.0 or SMC 2.1? What's "uname -a" o/p?
    - Have you killed previous smc/java/smcboot/cimboot processes and checked?
    - Do you see AdminServer.properties file? Just do a "find . | xargs grep -i AdminServer.properties"
in /usr/sadm/ folder? If yes, what're its contents.

  • Help with solaris 10 instalation

    Hi,
after installing solaris 10, its asking me for login name & password? what should I do?

    Hi
During the installation, you were asked for the root password. So you need to login as user 'root' using this password.
The next thing that you should do is to create an ordinary user account for yourself. There's more than one way to do this, but an easy one is to launch /usr/sbin/smc (Solaris Management Console), select 'This Computer' in the Toolboxes list, then System Configuration (left panel) -> Users. After that it's something like Action->Add User (I don't have the necessary priveleges on the machine that I'm using). Then you can logout as root and log back in as the user that you created.
