SmcFanControl - Can it be harmful?

Ok, I just recently bought a MacBook and was shocked at how hot my leg was after I sat it on my lap one day. I am used to my powerbook which never really got that hot. But, recently I came across a program to speed up the Minimum fan speed on a macbook/pro. Is there any damage that can be done by setting this at a high rpm for a prolonged period of time, say 6200 rpm? As far as I can tell the program works great and of course you can hear the fan difference when you apply changes, I have noticed large changes in temperature, but can it hurt anything?
The program is smcFanControl at http://81.169.182.62/~eidac/software/page5/page5.html
Macbook Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I noticed you're from korea.....can you please help me with something that's not related to this thread?....??
I transferred my mp3 files from my pc to my new mac...about a month ago....the mac osx seems to acknowledge the korean titled mp3 songs in finder.....but when I open up itunes...the korean titles show up all goggled or in weird symbols.....
i have close to 1000 krn songs....and there is no way i'm going to change the title of those songs one by one....
do you know how to resolve this problem?....do i have to download additional korean fonts?....if so, do you know where I could access this info?....
any kind of help would be greatly appreciated...thank you...

  • Re: Can it cause harm to keep my laptop running 24x7

I'm running a proxy server on my laptop which requires it to be up and running 24x7. Can this cause harm to a laptop in the long run ??. Are they designed to be left on permanently ?????

The reason I've ended up for using my Laptop as the Proxy server and squidguard , is that my PC with 8Gb of ram blew up. I've disable the option to hibernate/sleep when the lid get's closed so it is closed permanently, and I only acces it from my other PC using VNC. I've also bought a laptop stand to help with heating issues.
I was just concerned about the guarantee should it be running 24x7, as I know the purpose of laptops is mostly to carry arround which in effect tells me that they were build rather for frequent shutdown/restarts, than running continiuosly.
I've also seen on a lot of forums that you do more damage to PC's/Laptops by swthing them on/off all the time, due to voltage spikes on switching the power back on.

  • Can static electricity harm my iMac?

I just moved into a new house and now have a new problem: static electricty.  Almost everytime I come to sit at my desk and touch the computer, mouse or keyboard, I feel a small electric shock.  Sometime, I even see a spark.  Last night, while plugging in a USB device, I saw and heard a spark between the USB cable and the USB port.  I got a little worried I might have zapped something inside the computer because this is what happened once with a digital camera.
It never happened to me in the previous house which had hardwood floors.  This house has laminate flooring.  I don't know if this could be the cause.  Anyway, does anybody know if sparks like this can harm the computer or hard drive in any way?

Your Mac's case is grounded so it cannot be harmed by carpet shocks. If it were not properly grounded you probably would not get a spark, so that's a good thing.
Your new house may just be in a dryer location. Consider installing a whole house humidifier - they are not terribly expensive.
It is also possible that your last house's electrical wiring was not correct. Not your problem any more

  • Can video quality harm an ipod?

    Hey,
I just recently upgraded from my ipod 2G to an apple 5G. I purchased 3rd party software to convert all my old videos over to mpeg4 files. The quality is about the same as it was on my computer (which makes me happy), but some of these videos were horrible quality to begin with. Can playing these "horrible" quality videos on my ipod ruin it in anyway? By horrible quality I mean they have static, poor lighting, etc.
    Thanks!
    Steve

Not necessarily, just better logic. Every piece of a video is broken down to a simple output of light in a pixel. The quality of the video is how many pixels are used within the video. How could how many pixels that are differently colored harm the iPod?

  • Can Repairing Permissions Harm Regular Operation

I have read many times that repairing permissions cannot harm normal operation of your mac and .... it's certainly never caused me any problems as I run permissions repair every so often.
The reason I ask though is because of a buddy of mine whose mac, running OS 10.5, was running sluggishly. Out of curiosity I asked - "have you ever repaired your permissions" and he said - "what's that?" So I decided to run "Verify" permissions just to see what came up and it was a huge list. I told my friend that I did not know if this was a cause of his computer's sluggishness but that if he wanted I would run "Repair" permissions. He said to go ahead. So I did.
A few days later he was trying to update through "software update" iTunes and Safari ... and he tried to install "App Delete" as well. His mac would not install any of these apps. When he took his mac to the the Apple store they asked if he had recently repaired his permissions and he said "yes." they said that was the problem and that he shouldn't repair permissions unless he had a problem. (To me "sluggishness" is a problem.) Since he had all his stuff backed up the proceeded to wipe his computer and do a clean install. Seems a brute force fix to me. Personally I would have loved to sleuth a more subtle remedy, even if for nothing more than learning more, about the workings of OSX.
So, did I mess up my friends mac?
    Any opinions?

There is no reason to repair permissions unless there is a permissions related problem. Repairing permissions is not a troubleshooting or maintenance procedure. Repairing permissions will not fix "sluggishness." That would be caused by any number of things, but not permissions.
You did not mess up your friend's Mac. It was already messed up, and it's still messed up for some other set of reasons.
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack (not compatible with Snow Leopard.) If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack is not compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. MimMac (Commercial)
    11. Tri-Backup (Commercial)
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

    Ah, new to routers too.
Perhaps it's best to have a local computer support person come set you up?
To explain everything would require writing a book here.
But this is what you want basically.
Router, new Wireless N, firmware updated.
1: Two accounts, one admin, one guest Internet access. Random +30 plus character lenght passwords each preferred.
(guest password to max password length of any iDevices)
2: Encryption: WPA2 AES. No Ping. No remote access. No MAC filtering. Visible.
3: Guest access on devices and computers only.  Passwords written down and stored.
4: OpenDNS preferred but not mandatory.
If you get OpenDNS, you can log into their website for free and set parental controls on things like inappropriate sites for children. So whatever device is used on your network can't access a large portion of those sites (nothing is perfect) by most users who are not technical oriented.
What your doing now is running the bare bones unsecure router which can be used harmfully against you.
Even a Apple Airport router has to be very well secured. The defautl cd and out of the box setup is not a secure solution.

  • Can I get a Samsung player to work with iTunes?

Relatives gave my daughter a Samsung YP-T7JX audio player for Christmas. The CD software with it is for XP. I went to the Samsung site and could not find any support for this model and Macs. I did try to use it with iTunes, but when I connect it to my Mac it is not recognized. Is there software or a driver available so that I will be able to use iTunes and this player ? I am using 10.2.8 and iTunes 6.0.1. Thank you and Happy Holidays.

You are right: When in the presentation mode, Keynote normally wants to use both screens, depending on your Keynote Preferences settings.
Although I haven't tried this, the following procedure might be a way to accomplish what you want. It's worth a try, and at least it can do no harm.
    1) In Keynote /Preferences / Slideshow window, check the box "Allow Expose, Dashboard, and others to use screen. This lets other applications use the display on your computer while Keynote is in the Presentation mode.
    2) In the same menu, check the button "Present on primary display." This will put the presentation onto your iMac screen.
    3) In the Keynote / Preferences / Slideshow window, do NOT check the box "Use alternate display to view presenter information." This means that your slideshow will run, but you will not be able to see the "presenter information" to preview what's coming next. You'll need to run your slideshow by memory.
    4) The other applications you want to show on the projector (which you assign as the "alternate" display in the System Preferences / Displays menu) you will need to drag them over to that display before you launch the Keynote Presentation - just as you would do if you were using two monitors.

  • Can external display damage the iBook

I'm using my 14'iBook most of the time in my office and thinking now to connect the iBook to my LCD screen (via a KVM). Does anyone know if mirroring the screen on a external monitor can do any harm to the iBook?. By example due to overheating or draining to much current.
    Thanks for your thoughts

    Hi Frank,
Your iBook came with a video adapter and has the
ability to mirror the display. I don't think Apple
would have included those if it would cause harm.
When I'm on vacation, I regularly use mine as a DVD
player and have it connected to a TV. If you'll not
be using the builtin display, just turn down the
    brightness.

    Hi John,
Just read this post and was wondering if i connect to my 19" TFT monitor then dim the brightness right down will this not affect the picture on the external screen?

  • How can I get a dual display to work with Keynotes?

I'm using an iMac 24" output to a projector. I want to have Keynotes presentation on the iMac mon while I demo with various softwares, iPhoto, on the projection screen. Basically, I want to run the Keynote presentation and forward the slides on the iMac24" as a reference to the demos I'm doing on the large screen.
Keynotes does not seem to let me do that. It wants to take up both screens.
    Help is appreciated.

  • How can I simply send audio messages via text, not just to people who have iphones, even basic Nokia phones allow this function? Am I missing something here? IPHONE 6

How do I on IPHONE 6 have audio message option not just have the option it seems for other people with Iphones. Even Nokia phones have this very BASIC function/? Also how can you BULK DELETE Emails, I get hundreds of junk ones per day, and simply want to go, Select ALL or SELECT ALL READ and then press DELETE ONCE not hundreds of times????

No, basic Nokia phones do not, and have never had a function to easily send audio messages universally. SMS is a carrier feature and uses a very basic transfer mechanism and works only for short, 160-character messages. Through software, some phones later allowed you to type longer messages that the device then broke up seamlessly and sent as multiple SMS messages. MMS is another carrier service developed to be able to transport multimedia like audio and pictures. Again, very basic transfer and usually slow and low quality. Both of these are again, operator services. Your iPhone can send those messages to non-iPhone users using standard carrier services.
On the other hand, your iPhone Messages app uses your iPhone data plan - not unlike your home Internet service - to transfer audio, video and images through Apple's iMessage service. Other services exist that do something similar - WhatsApp for example - which also requires both the sender and recipient to use their app for the service to work.
As for email, Meg is correct. Your email provider is the first line of defense against spam. You should adjust your filters. That said, iOS Mail app had a delete all function, but not in places where it can do more harm than good - i.e. the Inbox. It is present only in the Junk and Trash folders where, presumably, your email provider or you have already been through some decision making process and deemed those emails acceptable to be deleted en masse.

Can I use remote disk on a 2008 unibody MacBook with no optical drive?

According to the link you came from the only MacBooks this works with are MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with Retina display. If yours is not one of these I can see no harm in trying it.
You could consider getting an external optical drive.

  • Can ipod car charger charge an iphone 3G s?

    Hi,
I have a 2nd Gen (5 year old) iPod but the car charger i use for it i purchased just over a year ago. Can i use this charger to charge my iphone or will this hurt the iphone? Thanks!

If it is a USB charger it will probably work. If it is Firewire it won't do any harm, but it won't work. You will get a message on the phone saying that the charger is not compatible.
The nice thing about USB is that it is utterly standard; there are no voltage variations (as there are with Firewire); the charger will supply 5 v +- 0.5 v at 0.5 to 1 Amp. Period. It will also optionally supply a signal that the device can detect to verify that the current is sufficient to charge the device. The iPhone looks for this signal and will also alert you if the charger cannot charge the phone. So you can do no harm trying it. Worst that will happen is that it won't charge the phone.
