Smiley face icon: what is it?

a smiley face icon has appeared on my screen above my application icons (right where you get the email notification icon or the icon that shows you've received/missed a call). i've never seen one of these before and can't figure out what it's trying to tell me, though there is a little number '1' showing right next to it. if anyone can tell me what this is, i'd appreciate the help!
thanks!!

I am completely computer illiterate, just so you know. So I will tell you exactly what I see.
When I go to applications and select blackberry messenger the screen comes up;
Contact List
Current Conversations
 -none-
then there are some other lines, but they are covered by a box that says "Please enter your name......."
There are OK and Cancel buttons but they are not highlighted.  I can highlight them by scrolling to them.
If I select OK, I get "Your name cannot be empty".  If I select cancel, it sends me back to the Applications menu with Blackberry Messenger, the calculator, Memopad, etc.
Sorry that I'm just not good at this stuff.

  • Smiley Face icon appearing

Hi there, there is a smiley face icon that appears at the top of the screen every night at around 7:30, and the only way to get rid of it is to reboot the phone. I have been on the phone with bell technical solutions and they haven't given me any help. There is no message that goes with the icon, and there is no bbm messages or notifications. The smiley face itself is beige. The only advice bell gave me was to do a factory reset of my device, and i don't really want to do that. If that is the only solution, and I backup my contacts and everything to my computer, what happens to the apps that I have paid for?
    Kind of a loaded question,
    thanks

None of those sound like one that gives a smiley face icon.. .and I asked, is it beige, or yellow?

  • Yellow smiley face icon

Hey guys. I have a BB Curve 9300 and on the top of the screen, next to my notifiers, there's a yellow teardropped shape smiley icon and because the features of the icon is not as defined as the other notifier icons, I suspect it to be a virus. I don't have any unopened notifications and did not subscribe to Yahoo. I'm baffled. A little advice please. Thanks.

No, it's not a virus. BlackBerrys have never gotten and are not yet susceptible to any virus, you're not the first. I don't understand why users jump to that first off.
It's a third party application notification of some sort. Since I don't know what third party apps you have installed, I can't say which, but if you'll check each of your apps for a notification or message or alert, I'm sure you'll find it.
The Yahoo Messenger icon is not tear-drop shaped, but is a round yellow smiley face .

  • TS1382 Sad face icon what does it mean

My husband dropped his ipod and now we only have a sad face.
Is there anything that can be done?

See here: iPod displays a sad iPod icon
Note that it's often a good sign of a hardware issue with the iPod's hard drive meaning the iPod will need to be serviced or replaced.

  • Mysterious smiley face icons in find fonts menu

Was going to do another round of revisons to some ice cream labels, this came up while opening 11 flavors. Only came up on one, and is gone now. Just wanted to share incase anyone seen this before. Seems like the fonts for showing the font technology changed to a font similar to Apple color Emoji, amybe a font in the show package contents.
    CS5 15.02 Mac OS 10.8.4

Maybe not so much a mystery, more an "Easter Egg". I ran across this in Illy CS3 (possibly even earlier) while assigning a hotkey to "Find Fonts".
This appears when you hold down Alt on a Windows machine -- probably Option on your Mac.
It seems to be a graphical depiction of what Illustrator's programmers think of various font formats: instead of the usual "Type 1", "OTF", and other icons, it displays these. Look what it says on your "Courier"!
Very funny ... until you realise you cannot disable it, and so using a hotkey that includes Alt is impossible.

  • Grey screen with smiley face at startup

    Hi all.
On my son's g3 imac running 9.2 (or maybe 9.?), after trhe startup chimes the screen freezes with a grey screen and a computer icon with a smiley face.
    What does this mean?
Any ideas on what I can do?
    Thanks for any help,
    Dave

Well, the smiling face means that the Mac OS operating system was found on the disk. The boot process didn't get too far because soon after you should get the 9.2 logo.
You might try holding down the shift key after you power on. This will prevent the extensions from being loaded. Perhaps one is bad.
You could put a 9.2 cd in the machine & boot. Hold down the c key. See if there is some type of file system checker.
Did your machine come with any diagnostic software? I think mine did. Run it.

If the device was unlocked in the past to use on a different carrer, that can't be undone or lost. Unlocked is unlocked is unlocked.
Have you look in your main Messages folder (if you are using an email specific folder)?
    Have you opened BlackBerry Messenger?
This has nothing to do with Desktop Manager.

  • What happened to the name faces icon in iphoto 08?

I had to erase everything off my computer and re-install iphoto '08. When I did this, I no longer have faces or places in the library on the left hand side.  I also do not have the name (faces) icon on the bottom of the window.  What can I do to fix this?

what version of iPhoto are you running? There have been many fixes to web galleries and there still are some issues to be resolved - in versions before 7.1.2 web galleries were pretty flaky
7.1.3 still have some issues but many less
One suggestion is in the future make an album of the photos you want in the web gallery and do all changes there then publish that album as a web gallery - making changes to a published web gallery while it is updating (and you can not easily control this) still seems to cause problems

    Welcme to the Frums!
I believe that smiley face may possibly be your blackberry messenger.  Open up your messenger and see if you have a message waiting. It will be either the blue blackberry symbol or red blackberry symbol.

  • Smiley face on ipod nano

Hi, my sisters ipod nano has a smiley face on he screen and wont do anything. does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this or what the problem could be.

This icon means that your iPod is, in some way, have issues.
First try putting your iPod into disk mode. This can sometimes cure an exclamation point and folder or sad iPod icon.
    See these articles:

  • Serviced ipod comes back with a sad-face icon

I recently had my 4th generation clickwheel ipod serviced, because it had a harddrive issue. iTunes had randomly failed to write a song to the ipod, whereupon the ipod decided it would no longer start correctly, or be recognized by the PC correctly. In the periods of time that the iPod would try to start back up, and while it is connected to the computer, the iPod just whirrs, then clicks and stops, whirrs, clicks and stops, over and over and over again. It was basically overheating while doing this, and thus it was rendered useless. This was the second iPod that I had, as the first one's touch scrollwheel randomly quit.
So after 20 days of this second iPod, i sent it back after a phone call to tech support that made them waive the fee.
So... now I get the iPod back, looks brand new, but I don't think they did anything to it... other than maybe swap out the case. The hard drive keeps clicking and whirring, only NOW... it won't respond at all to being plugged in with it's power adapter or the PC. At all. It just starts up with it's click and whir noises, and then shows me the sad-face icon.
please, nobody tell me to use the ipod updater to restore the ipod, and nobody tell me to try resetting the ipod via the hold switch and then the menu and select buttons. You can trust me that I've tried all the typical ways of making the iPod do what I paid $360.51 to make it do. But no.
What I am curious of, is...
Is there any way to have the iPod get back on it's feet, without sending it back in? I've literally had it for 2 days, waiting to bring it back home so that I could begin putting my music back on it, but when I start it up for the first time, it does this to me, and I can't connect it to the PC. I know that the iPod starts off being mac-formatted, but last time, it would at least TELL me that, and ask me if I wanted to format it for the PC environment.
Is there any self-help hope? Or should I just call tech support (AGAIN coughcough) and become another disgruntled customer?
I'm a patient guy, and I understand that tech gadgets have issues sometimes... but dang. If I in fact service this iPod, I'll be getting my 4th one in hopes that it will work. I'm willing to try some random crap in order to make it work?
Any idea for random crap that I could try?

hehe, yeah, i meant to come back and update the topic with what i'm doing
I called apple tech support line again and went through a normal process to figure out the issue.
    well..
they tell me that i can only use this line once in order to have it serviced, so he's not sure he can do anything since i've already "used" my one service request.
well, i'm all over that. i told him my issue anyway, giving him the dumbed-down version, which is "hey, you sent me a broken ipod" or something like that. so, he's setting up the box the be shipped to me and was going to charge me the $31.50 or whatever, but i threw a dignified fit over that, since, well, it's THEIR problem that they sent me a busted piece of sillyness. anyway, he puts me on hold after waiving the charge, but another guy (a "product specialist") picks up my line and reviews the problem with me.
okay, here's the climax of the story
he tells me that since i've been having so many fatal issues with the ipod that renders the hardware useless, they are going to upgrade me to an updated model.
I was happy, but i was thinking that they were going to send me on my way with a 40gb or something.
    nope.
    (it's better than that)
he told me that since they don't make the model that i currently have, they're going to send me a 20gb photo ipod as the replacement product.
had he been standing in front of me i would have tried to hug him or something!
so, my efforts have been muchly worth it, though, there's a bit more of a process you have to go through. the tech asks for your info, like address, email, yada yada, and he gives you a case number. then, 2 or 3 days later i got an email containing a link for an online shipping label that i had to print and slap onto an old service box. i had to send the ipod to them, but then call back the rep and give him my case number and tracking number. i'm currently awaiting some sort of confirmation over the issue, but he's told me earlier that once they confirm that the ipod is contained in the package and that it is in fact on it's way, they'll have the apple store ship me a brand new packaged 20gb photo ipod.
if at first you don't succeed, try try again. and again. and again. and one more time for good measure.

  • Ichat smiley faces in snow leopard

    hey all,
i searched but couldn't find a topic about this anywhere, so i thought it would be appropriate to make a new post.
sometime after i installed snow leopard i noticed that smiley faces now appear in the preview bar (like before you view a message, ichat gives the persons name and a little preview of the message) which is great, but then when i look at the message i dont see the actual image version of the emoticon, just the semi colon and parentheses or whatever they sent. hopefully i made this as clear as possible. do any of you know how i could fix this? obviously its not a huge issue but its a bit irritating.
    thanks everyone

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
I am not sure I have it totally.
Are you saying that when you get a Text Chat Invite - what you can see of the Message may include a Smiley that appears in Picture form but when you open that the Text only shows the text form of that Smiley ?
Do you have Show Smiley's Off in the iChat View Menu > Messages sub menu ?
I thinks this may be a quirk between the Invite settings view and the options not to Show Smileys in the Menu mentioned.
