Smoking Printers - HP LaserJet P1006 and HP 1022

Users have reported smoke coming out of two printers (HP LaserJet P1006 and HP 1022) when in use and after 3-4 pages have printed. The printer also gets hot and the heat kan be felt by putting the hand over the area where the printed paper comes out. The printed paper also curls up that normally happens when the paper gets hot.
Does anyone have any idea or a solution?

What most folks identify as smoke with LaserJet printers, specifically low end Consumer laser printers is actually steam and not smoke.   As the fusing assembly heats the paper, moisture within is literally "cooked out" and will vent out of the top output sometimes appearing as smoke, but will quickly dissipate.  This is totally normal and should not be cause for concern.   There are ways to help minimize this by storing paper in an airtight container (think Tupperware) to prevent it from absorbing moisture from the air.   Many  folks believe it takes a lot of time for paper to absorb moisture, but in reality, it only takes a few hours.
Although this phenomenon can occur with all laser printers, higher end Commercial LaserJet printers include fans to help dissipate it better.  Low end LaserJet printers do not have internal fans, so it can be more noticeable.  In general, if the printer will print, all is good.  There are thermistors built in to the fusing assembly to measure heat.  Anything out of spec will prompt and error on the unit itself and will not allow the unit to print.
A good reference doc on this can be found at the following URL:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=110&prodSeriesId=...
Obviously, if you see real smoke (grey, white or blue) from other areas (right, left side covers) and the unit is displaying an error, this would be cause for concern.

  • Laserjet P1006 works better but not good enough in Windows 8.1

Background:  I ran the Windows 8 pre-install check for hardware compatibility.  It said I would be able to use my HP Laserjet P1006.  That was wrong.  The printer never worked once under Windows 8.0.  That was over a year without a home printer unless I carried it to my wife's Windows 7 laptop to use.
Current situation:  I got the Windows 8.1 upgrade (64-bit).  The drivers are now available.  I re-installed the Laserjet P1006 and it can be used from my desktop and shared to my wife's Windows 7 on the wireless home network.
    Issues:
    1) if paper runs out there is no way to restart the printing and the print must be cancelled from the X button on the printer... because there is nothing on the print queue after paper runs out.
    2) if you don't wait for the printout to finish before you print another document, then the printer will hang for a very long time (20 minutes) and eventually print the end of document 1 and then document 2.  Apparently this is related to 1) above, because the print queue will only show the second document when the first is still not completed.
    3) even with power saver turned OFF, drives off NEVER, etc. the network sharing of this printer requires that I wake the monitors, enter the password, and finally STOP/START the SPOOLER SERVICE.  Even then it's likely we won't get the shared printer to work on the same day... but likely it will print much later when some miracle occurs.
I have some other printers that have recently been gifted with W8.1 drivers.  I can try them to see if these spool and communication problems are pervasive (Windows 8.1) or specific to the P1006 driver.
I have actually loaded the HASP deck for an NJE/RJE station on the TUCC. My first PC was an OSBORNE I. I cut my teeth on KIM-1 and Commodore P.E.T. machines.

    Hi AZBen,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I read your post and you are having issues printing and using the printer sharing.
I will be happy to help you.
The printer has a USB connection and works properly when connected directly to a computer by a USB connection through the software.
Can't guarantee printer sharing will work.
You want to use the normal USB slot 2.0 not the latest USB 3.0. USB 3.0 are supposed to be backwards compatible.
Temporarily turn off and any Firewalls and Antivirus software to see if this will resolve the issue.
    Hope this helps.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

  • Trouble Printing with HP Laserjet P1006

    Hi,
I just purchased a new HP Laserjet P1006 and when I installed it, Apple Software Update installed new drivers for it.
When I try to print, everything just hangs in the printer queue and says "Sending print data..."
Any idea how to fix this?
    I'm using Snow Leopard FYI.
    Thanks

Was the HP 2.2 update the one that was installed?
What happens if you delete /Library/Printers/hp, delete the queue from Print & Fax Prefs and then install the 2.2. update?

  • HP printer has stopped working - Laserjet p1006

I just installed Windows® 8 Consumer Preview and my HP printer has stopped working. I am using the Laserjet p1006 and I have tried everything, reinstalling the printer, re-downloading drivers etc. but to no avail. Are there new drivers available that work with Windows 8?
    Update:
The printer is installed and driver has been picked up by Windows but every time I try and print something, it gives me an error that the document could not be printed.
    Any suggestions

  • HP LaserJet P1006 refuses to print after a paper jam

I've used an HP LaserJet P1006 for 3 years now and it has performed without a hitch (I don't print that much).  However, recently it swallowed a sheet of paper in a rather crooked fashion that left it gasping, and I had to shut it down.  I was abled to carefully remove the paper after first removing the ink cartridge, but when I tried to print again, it would not do it.  I went through the entire check-up procedure the manual suggests, but no dice, it refuses to print.  This morning I tried something I did not tried before, which was printing  a "Demo Page" under the "Print Information Pages" of the "services" tab of the "Printing Preferences" menu.  To my surprise it printed the Demo Page.  However, it refuses to print anything else, like the "print test page" or print from any other program. Intimidation with a sledge hammer doesn't work either.  Any ideas anyone?  I'd appreciate your comments.  Thanks. JD
    WindowsXP

Thanks for the tip Royal_KB,  I tried what you suggested but no dice.
I tried the HP Print Diagnostic Utility v4.1 with the following results:
    1)  Before I tried to print, I clicked on the FIX button and it said:  "No problems were found for HP laserJet P1006"  and all checkmark circles are green. A small window pops up that states:   ""The HP Print Diagnostic Utility is not detecting any remaining issues.  Click PRINT A TEST PAGE to check your printer operation"".  I click to print, and a second window asks if I really want to print.  I say YES, but no printing takes place, the printer doesn't even attempt to print, though the light on the printer is green. So I click on RETEST I get the same behavior all over again.  ""No problems were found for HP laserJet P1006""  and all checkmark circles are green.  I try everything suggested by the HPPDU v4.1 and I find myself in a catch 22 situation,  so I do 2) next
    2)  I  go to  PRINTING PREFERENCES > SERVICES tab > PRINT INFORMATION PAGES >  select DEMO PAGE  >  PRINT button..............The printer then turns on,  and prints a perfect demo page of the printer.  I have tried to make this printer print through other programs and test pages etc. etc., but the Demo Page is the only thing it will print.  I'd appreciate any other suggestions.  Trebuchet candidate maybe?
    Thanks

  • Driver(s) to print on HP Laserjet 4000n and HP Deskjet 722C printers for Windows 7 (64bit)

I'm introducing a Windows 7 64bit) computer in a network of Windows XP (32bit) computers.
How do I find driver(s) to print on HP Laserjet 4000n and HP Deskjet 722C printers in a network that uses Windows 7 (64bit) and Windows XP (32bit)?  Printer sharing is done using a Windows XP (32bit) base computer.
Should I load a 64bit driver on the 32bit XP computer for the benefit of the Windows 7 computer or will that mess up the XP computer?
    Thanks

Hello, the HP laser jet 4000n you install the drivers via windows update procedure.  The HP 722C is not supported under Windows 7 due to it's age.

  • Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit and Laserjet P1006

    Hello,
I am just wondering if the HP Wireless Printing Upgrade Kit is compatible with the HP Laserjet P1006 printer. It is not listed on the compatibility list but I have read several accounts of people who claim to be using them together. I have also read posts that state they are not compatible. Either way, they will not work together for me so I am trying to figure out if it is something I am doing wrong in the setup or if the two pieces of hardware are simply not compatible. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Lauren
P.S. I am using a Dell XPS M1310 Notebook with Vista.

    Hi,
    I guess that would help:

  • HP LaserJet P1006 Print very slow with Windows 8.1

I have an HP LaserJet 1006 that is installed on Toshiba Laptop running Windows 8.1 and was working fine even from time to time it stop working at all, then I have to remove the software and then reinstall it again and then it works fine, last time I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Driver for the printer.
But this time, first I tried to remove the software but it didn't work; the printer still show up on the control panel - Devices and Printers. then some how I was able to reinstall the software , after that the printer is working but printing very slow even it is a LaserJet printer.
Please any one can help with that?

    Hey @wmowafi,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you're experiencing a slow printing issue on Windows 8.1 when printing to your HP Laserjet P1006 Printer. I would like to work with you today at resolving this issue. Now the only driver available for your product on Windows 8.1 is a hostbased plug and play basic generic driver. Therefore, there is limitations for what can be done for troubleshooting. As you stated, you have already attempted an uninstalled and reinstalled of the driver to no avail. I'm going to suggest some further steps and tools to resolve this issue for you.
    Step 1: Uninstall Your Printer:
    Disconnect your USB cable
Click the following link: Fix problems that programs cannot be installed or uninstalled to access the Microsoft Uninstall Tool.
Once the website opens, select Run Now on the right hand side
    Allow the Tool to run.
    When prompted choose Uninstall
A list of programs should populate and you're looking for the Laserjet. It may appear as LJ P1000 series. Please select the Laserjet series and Uninstall it.
If the Laserjet doesn't show in the list of programs than your Windows 8.1 computer does not see the Laserjet driver as properly installed.
Step 2: Clear the Temp Files:
Launch your Start screen by right clicking on the Windows icon on the bottom left of your screen or by select the Windows button on your keyboard located to the right of the Ctrl button.
Once the Start screen launches, type the word Run
Click on Run to launch it
In the Run box type %temp% and select OK
Once the Temp folder opens, hold down Ctrl + A at the same time on your keyboard and everything will highlight in the folder. Select 'Delete' on your keyboard. Don't worry, no files or folders on your actual computer will be removed during this process. If a file is still be used on your computer you will get a pop up to 'skip' the file
Once the Temp folder is emptied of its files, close the window
On your Desktop, right click on the Recycling Bin and left click on 'Empty Recycling Bin'
    Restart you computer
Step 3: Reinstall the Laserjet P1006:
Please keep your USB cable disconnected
Click on the following link: HP LaserJet P1000-P1500 Hostbased Plug and Play Basic Driver
The driver page for your product will now launch
Select Download and allow the download to Run
Once the download is complete an extraction will automatically run and once completed the installer will launch
Run through the step-by-step on screen instructions.
Please do not plug in your USB cable until prompted
Ensure that your USB cable is plugged in from the rear of the printer directly to the computer. Avoid extenders or docking stations as they can cause printing and communication issues.
    Test printing!
Please let me know if the steps I've provided resolve your issue. Good luck!

  • HP Laserjet P1006 won't print "Printer Offline"

My hp laserjet p1006 won't print and the error message says "printer offline". The printer does show up in System Profiler. The printer is on, and connected via USB. Ready light on printer is on. Sometimes the orange light blinks but is mostly off. I tried different USB ports (eliminating the hub) and switched out the USB cable. Restarted computer and printer, updated driver and repaired disk permissions. I recently switched to Snow Leopard but the printer has printed since I switched numerous times.
I had this problem 2 weeks ago and finally it fixed itself, but since a restart it doesn't work. Any suggestions?

Yes, I just downloaded the Apple HP update 2.3. The driver that was showing in my Printer Setup Utility was 1.2.0.224. Now I downloaded and installed 2.3 but the Printer Setup Utility only shows 1.2.0.224. 2.3 is not listed in the driver list. Why is that?
2.3 is the version of the update, not the version of the driver.
According to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669, 1.2.0.224 is the correct version of the HP driver.
Final question: why do I have problems nobody else does?
People are having a variety of problems. It may be because of permissions, previous versions of the HP software that was installed and not deleted. Since there wasn't support for this printer on Snow Leopard until the 2.2 update, it's hard to guess what the issue was, but you're not alone - read some of threads here.
If you run into this problem again, delete the <hard drive>/Library/Printers/hp folder, delete your printer from Print & Fax, then run Software Update and re-add the printer.
    Hope this helps.

  • Printing in Adobe Reader 9 with HP Laserjet P1006

I am having trouble printing in the newest version of Adobe Reader 9 on my HP LaserJet P1006. I am able to print to a shared HP LaserJet 1320, but not the P1006. I am able to print from Word 2008 and Firefox 3. This makes no sense to me.
I have "reinstalled" both Adobe Reader and my printer driver, though I'm not sure how "uninstall" the driver. But, I did do a reinstallation of that, and am getting the same results.
    Any ideas on how to:
    1. Uninstall the printer driver
    2. What may be going on?
I have read that a few other people have had troubles printing within Adobe Reader on Leopard, but everyone uses different printers. I'm guessing this may be a Leopard compatibility problem with Adobe reader and the HP driver??
    Any help is appreciated

  • Cannot print with HP LaserJet P1006

I've installed the latest print drivers from HP (1.0.6) and still the LaserJet P1006 driver doesn't appear when I try and pick the driver. I have verified that /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet/HP1006/ exists and has the following files in it:

When I try using other LaserJet drivers nothing prints and I see DoIOTrandfer error 0xe0004051 errors.
    Any ideas?

Have you had any luck getting the P1006 to work? I'm in a similar situation and I haven't found anything that works. I'm trying to install on a MacBook running 10.4.11. I've tried both the 1.0.4 and 1.0.6 versions of the drivers with no effect.
The printer is showing up in the Printer Browser window, but it's not showing up in the "Print Using" drop down menu.
I tried a manual uninstall and a clean reinstall. Didn't work. I did noticed in the uninstall instructions on HP's website that the file /Library/Frameworks/libZJBIG.dylib is shared with several other printers. The uninstall instructions say not to remove this file if you use these other printers. I don't, so I went to delete it. But upon checking, I found that the p1006 installer hadn't installed it. I thought this might be my issue, so I installed the drivers for one of the other printers that share this file. I now have libZJBIG.dylib, but still with no results.

  • HELP!!!  My MacBook & Printing with an HP LaserJet P1006

I've been trying to print using an HP LaserJet printer, but everytime I go to the print window, there is an exclamation point next to the listed printer which doesn't allow me to print.
All help I've read about suggests going to the "print center" to fix this. Which is what I would do on my old powerbook and ibook, simply deleting print jobs and starting over.
However, I can't seem to find the Print Center on my macbook. It's just not there. When I go to Utilities, there's no printer access links there either. Nor does the printer icon show up in my dock as it used to do with my other printer and on my other computers. Am I missing something in my system?
What's going on? Can anyone suggest a fix?
    Much thanks in advance...

I had this problem. The computer wasn't recognizing the location of the printer in all MS Office 2004 documents. You need to delete and add the printer.
To delete and add the printer, follow these steps:
    1. On the Sys Pref menu, click print & Fax.
    2. In the next window, you will see the HP Laserjet P1006 listed in your list of available printers.
    3. Click to select (i.e. highlight the HP P1006) in the Printer list.
    4. Click Delete.
    5. Click Add.
    6. In the Connection Method list, click the connection method that is used by your printer.
    7. In the Printer list, click the printer that you want to add, and then click Add.
Go back to your Office document and try printing. Hope this helps.

  • P1006 and Wireless Network Printing

I have a P1006 connected to an Apple Airport Express on a home network. The Airport Express has a static IP, and the router is configured so that it also knows that the Airport Express has a static IP.  I have a similar configuration with a second printer (Epson) that works reliably.  However, print jobs sent to the P1006 vanish.  I have used this arrangement in part to keep down the cost of replacement printers in the future (since they need not be purchased with built-in network connectivity.)  I had some earlier connectivity to the P1006 earlier by using Windows Bonjour, but because of a wish to also be able to print to this printer from a Windows Mobile 6.1 Pocket PC using Jetcet (the PPC does not have Bonjour) tried going to direct IP printing.
    This has not worked.
I have considered replacing the Airport Express because I know that HP printers have traditionally had an issue with being able to print from wireless print servers (given the additional cost and reliability this always seemed odd to me) and thought that perhaps using an HP print server might solve the issue.  Although this slightly undercuts my goals, if it would consistently work with HP printers perhaps it would make sense.  I looked at the HP 2101nw Wireless G Print Server, compatibility with the P1006 looks questionable.  However, a post in this forum on December 19, 2008 in a thread called Re: Wireless Print Server compatibility for HP LaserJet P1005 seems to be a cut and past of other info from the HP site and lists the P1006 as compatible.
    Can someone clarify this?
If the HP2101nw and the P1006 are not compatible, is there ANY print server that will work?  For example, the HP Jetdirect ew2400 802.11g?  Or, it need not be wireless though that would be preferable.

    This could help you.
I was having trouble installing a HP P1006 Laser Printer on an Apple Airport.  I worked for many hours with no avail.  When plugged into the USB on the MacBook Pro, it printed great.
I noticed when the printer “self installed” using the USB, the name of the printer is
HP-P1006; and when I install the printer on the AirPort, it is called
Hewlett Packard HP-P1006.  Having nothing to loose, I selected the Hewlett Packard HP-P1006 using Bonjour, then in the name below, I deleted the name Hewlett Packard_ leaving only the name HP-P1006.  In other words, matching the name of the printer when using the USB.  Too my amazement, it worked.   I can now print wirelessly on the HP-P1006.
