Smooth cam analysis of entire clip!

Hello,
I'm working on a long multiple-camera edit. I've been thoroughly impressed by the Smooth Cam filter because it's saved me tons of time on keyframing little camera bumps out, especially on our handheld crowd shots. It really is spectacular. Anyway, before applying the filter, it analyzes the clip. But, instead of just analyzing the portion of the clip that I've cut, it's analyzing the entire clip. The duration of the entire shot is about 35 minutes and it's saying it will take 6 hours to analyze. I only applied the filter to a 9 second clip.
Has anyone else had to deal with this? Any workarounds?
The footage was shot 1080PsF 23.98 and captured as the same with the Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) codec, but I don't think that makes a difference with this problem since I tested to see if it analyzes the entire clip with some DV footage I had on my system. Which it does.

Your problem most likely has to do with collapsing your multiclips. Before you collapse them FCP is looking at the whole clip, not just the section you've cut into your sequence. By collapsing the clips you then tell FCP to only work with the angles on the timeline.
To collapse one or more multiclips in the Timeline:
1. Select the multiclips you want to collapse in the Timeline.
2. Do one of the following:
- Choose Modify > Collapse Multiclip(s).
- Control-click one of the selected multiclips in the Timeline, then choose Collapse
Multiclip(s) from the shortcut menu.
The selected multiclips are collapsed to the clips of their active angles.
To expand one or more multiclips in the Timeline:
1. Select the multiclips you want to expand in the Timeline.
2. Do one of the following:
- Choose Modify > Uncollapse Multiclip(s).
- Control-click one of the selected multiclips in the Timeline, then choose Uncollapse
Multiclip(s) from the shortcut menu.
The selected multiclips are expanded to the clips of their active angles.
All this can be found in the FCP manual, so if it doesn't make sense here look it up.
Hope this works for you.

  • Smooth Cam - Mulitple filters???

I needed to apply the smooth cam filter to 4 angles that I shot of a Karoke Contest.  All clips were about an hour.  Unfortunatly, I found out about the smooht cam feature after I had already edited all the angles to give me one fluid picture.  You know, camera 1, camera 4, camera 1, camera 3, and so on...  So clicked select all and applied the smooth cam filter.  The first clip took about 7 hours to render.  I was OK with that.  But the time kept getting longer and longer, until my 3rd clip was going to take 17 hours.  I couldn't select remove atributes "filters" because I had used some color correction filters and flop filters, but a strange thing happened.  I had 6 smooth cam filters on each clip.  I found this out by clicking on the clip and bringing it up in the browser.  Is that normal?  Or did it happen because I would choose smooth cam filter, then quit after the first clip was done, then selected smooth cam filter again.  So that's my first question.  My next would be: should I do this?  Finish the edit, adjust the audio, then export as a sef contained quicktime movie.  Then reimport that clip and apply the smooth cam to that?  I would assume since it is now one clip that it would only have to render once, not 4 times, but I could be wrong.  And will the smooth cam filter work on the quicktime clip, even though is is switching angles of the shoot?

You could try this.  Edit each entire clip individually into it's own sequence (with sequence settings that match the clip settings) and the sequence name matching the clip name, EXACTLY.  Apply the smoothcam filter to each clip in each sequence and adjust parameters to your satisfaction.  Then export each sequence to a new folder on your hard drive.  When it's done, duplicate your project (for safety's sake) and reconnect the original clips to these new clips.  Remove the unnecessary smoothcam filters in your sequence.  Should work fine.

  • Smooth Cam not exporting properly in FCP 7.03 - please help

    Hello
I have a 30 minute video edit. A small number of clips have the smooth cam filter applied with default settings. When I export the finished project to a number of varied settings - pro res, pro res LT, apple tv, iphone etc... All the smooth cam clips are jittery and juddering -  and are not working for some reason.
I have done a bit of research and apparently it's a bug in FCP 7.03 with interlaced footage (progressive works fine, apparently). All the source footage was transcoded to pro res.
Someone said that putting the clips in motion and smoothing them out in optical flow would work and people had results. However I have no clue how to do this..
Can someone please help me - I need to render a finished project today..
    Thanks in advance
    Nick

Apparently it's a bug with Smoothcam's handling of interlaced footage in FCP 7.0.3 ... there's a post over on the Creative COW website detailing using Motion instead as Finnur mentions above.  Here's my own quick summary of that for those that aren't used to it :
In FCP select the clip instance and choose FIle > Send To > Motion Project (or right click and choose Send To > Motion Project) and save the Exported clip to your scratch disk
The exported clip will open in Motion. Click the clip to select it and then from the toolbar at the top of the main window choose ➀ Add Behavior > Motion Tracking > Stabilize
Next choose ➁ HUD (heads up display), and in that window ➂ set Method : Smooth, Borders : Zoom, and select Adjust : Position & Scale, and click the Movement : Analyze button
When the Analysis is complete, choose Motion menu > Quit, and press "Save" when prompted.
When you return to FCP the smoothed Motion project (.motn) should be sitting in the sequence in place of the original clip ... it'll probably need rendering .
Personally, I'd be inclined to just try adding the Shift Fields filter (Effects > Video Filters > Video > Shift Fields) to the jittery Smoothcam shot in FCP first, and see if that works, before jumping through the Motion hoops.
    Hope it helps

  • Missing Smooth Cam Render Files?

I was editing my project on a Mac Book Pro, and it now has a charging problem that I will need to take it in to be fixed. So what I did is transfer my project to my Mac Pro. I had some files that I applied the smooth cam filter to, and the analysis was complete before moving my project.
When I went to render those files (on the mac pro) it started to re-analyze the clip. I would really not like to go through this process again. As it takes so long. Any ideas?

The analysis/render file did not get moved over. At this point you'll need to do the process again.
One way to keep the process under control is cut the clip into just the segment you need smoothcam. Otherwise, the process will want to look at the whole clip, not just the segment you are using.

  • HELP: Smooth Cam wont work!!!

    Hello,
I have been having some trouble applying the Smooth Cam Effect to clips in FCP 6. When a clip is active and I go to turn on the smooth cam effect in the video effects folder nothing happens. Smoothcam has no effect when it is applied. Replaying the clip with the effect on it does absolutely nothing different from the original. This is not a problem with exporting. This is a problem of just applying the effect to a clip. It doesnt even analyze the clip it should be applied to.......
I have used this effect on other footage and have seen the difference it can make. However, with the clips I am currently working with I see no difference. All of the footage I am trying to apply this effect to is very jittery with a lot of fast camera motion. Footage that I thought would be perfect for the Smoothcam effect. Has anyone else experienced trouble with the smoothcam? Is there something I am doing wrong here?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is possible that the clip's media you are having troubles with was previously analyzed.
Control click the clip/s in question and in the popdown menu choose reveal in finder.
If next to the original media you find a file with blank icon and extension .mtdf delete/trash that and apply smoothcam again.
Remember that when applying the filter the entire media file to which your clip in the timeline refers to will be analyzed.
If you want a specific portion (an edited clip) of the media to be affected by SCam then set IN and OUT and export that as QT movie self-contained (no loss of quality involved) then re-import that and apply SCam.

  • Does iMovie '08 allow effect for an entire clip?

I just started working in '04, and I find that color correction and Brightness & Contrast only work on a 10 sec. portion of the clip. Does the new version work on the entire clip, say, in this instance, about 3.5 min.?
    Thanks.
    Jim

OK - I have been able to answer my own question.
First I converted one of my mini-movie AVI files to mpg-2 with VisualHub
This file could not be imported into iMovie '08
Following the advice in another message in this forum, I took one of my USB2 flash drives and created a folder MP_ROOT at the root level of the drive and created a folder 101PNV01 inside the MP_ROOT folder. I placed the mpg-2 file created by VisualHub in the 101PNV01 folder.
When I started iMovie '08, the flash drive was recognized as a camera and I was allow to import the mpg-2 file into a new event.
When I looked in the iMovie Events folder mentioned in the first posting of this thread, the file type of the clip was .MOV. The Quicktime Player shows the format of the file as Apple MPEG-2 SD Camcorder Video.

  • Motion Stabilize vs Shake Smooth Cam

    Hello all,
I am a Final Cut Express user that is looking to take some camera jitter out of a few clips I've taken. I know that FCE has and image stabilizer filter but for the life of me I can not seem to get good results by using it. This may or may not be operator error but in my defense I have done some research on using it. I also have access to Motion as well as Shake and in my research I've discovered that these apps also have tools for image stabilization.
I've also discovered iStabilize which is much more consumer based (probably a good thing based on my sklills) but it would require purchasing it and it mostly likely will not provide the results of Motion or Shake (if I can figure out how to use them).
To remove the video camera shake, which app will most likely produce better results and what additional considerations should be noted?
Keep in mind that I have a decent background with FCE but virtually no background in Shake or Motion. I have however reviewed the manuals and watched a few demos. I've also launched both apps and have taken a stab at both (again with limited results). In motion I was able to apply the Stabilizer behavior and actually export the clip but I'm pretty confident I'm not utilizing it to the fullest as my clip is still very shaky. In Shake I was able to start a new script and add the Smooth Cam node but I could not figure out how to export the clip. Can I export as a quicktime file so I can easily put it back into my FCE project?
So I guess my main questions are:
Which app will remove camera shake better?
How do I actually do it?
Before I switched to Mac I used a very basic app for image stabilization. It was not a pro app but it was easy to use and produced decent results. I liked the fact that it had a split screen view where I can compare the clip before and after. From my poking around in Motion and Shake I can't seem to find a similar view.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!
ps. Here is an example of the videos I make. Its non-professional but I do like my projects to look decent. If I can learn a little about Motion or Shake and successfully have a good workflow for removing camera shake I will be thrilled. Thanks!

    hi,
I'm not a big Shaker user but i believe you have to apply an Output node in order to render stuff out. However Specialcase is correct since Motion and Shake use the same technologies the results should be pretty similar. Motion is obviously easier to use. Just play around with the settings you'll get there. Motion doesnt have the split pane view, but you can just toggle the filter on and off to compare.
Had a look at your film, and it looks very nice, the images are really stunning, well shot. Does that have camera stabilization in it. Looks pretty good. But did you know that the music track is only coming out of one channel?
    Keep at it

    YOU DA MAN captain mench!
That was just the type of thing I was looking for. It really helped bring the pre-existing knowledge I've gathered from my readings and 1st attempt into scope. I've now got the motivation and confidence to get back into shake and try it again. Thanks!
In regards to the camera and video. Thanks and glad you liked it. I shot it with the Canon HV10. The video I posted wasn't so much an example of the camera jitter as much as it was just an example of what I do. Thanks for the advice either way. I'm looking forward to doing more color correction in my projects too. Up until now I've settled for less. As I learn the apps I'm more interested in making the absolute best I can. I'm sure I don't have to tell you it's a work in progress.
Thanks again. I'll be back if I need more help.
ps. Does color correcting the clip first have any effect on how well Shake and SmoothCam will remove jitter? Also, when I send from FCP to Shake does it remove the interlacing? I noticed that SmoothCam only works with de-interlaced footy. Thoughts?

  • Relinking Smooth-Cam files??

I created a number of Smooth-Cam clips on a project.
Then forgot to transfer the results to my portable hard drive.
I can access the suite I worked on (a very remote location).  I'm wondering; it looks like the smooth cam clips are working from the original media (except where I created a shorter clip with a new name).  It looks like the SmoothCam plugin creates an additional .mov.mtdf file.
Opening the project file now I find most of the SmoothCam clips are now saying they are 'unanalyzed'.  Has FCP created a new media clip and stored it somewhere?  Or are those .mov.mtdf files somehow being used by FCP when displaying the annalyzed SmoothCam clip?  And if so, they are now unlinked somehow?
What I'm looking for is a way to reconnect the supposedly already analyzed clips on the timeline to whatever file was originally created by SmoothCam.
I'm on the road with a slightly cranky laptop, and this film was all done (with a fair bit of SmoothCam) on a brand new tower with all the bells and whistles.  And needs to be finished up as quickly as possible (without that bells and whistles tower).
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
    Ben

Start re-analyzing. Relinking of temporary files is always an iffy proposition. It becomes doubly so when you are working on a different computer.

  • Import video comes in as one entire clip

I just purchased a new iMac which came with iLife 09. I have been using an older version of iMovie. I am a football coach and use the iMovie to import video and break clips into groups. Offense, Defense, Special Teams, etc. The new iMovie imports my video as an entire clip and I must go through and piece it together. I hate it! Am I doing something wrong? I have a Sony DCR-TRV38 mini DV camera. Always worked fine before. Just hook up to the firewire and go. If anyone can help me out, I would be in your debt.
    Casey in Pleasanton CA

Normally, iMovie will start a new clip every time that the camera is started and stopped.
If you have to assemble movies in groups, watch these two video tutorials. They may help.

  • Smooth cam filter problem

I have been having issues with using the smooth cam filter. Whenever i use a transition from a clip with the smooth cam filter applied i get a glitch frame during the transition. This holds true to every transition. Has anybody else ran into this problem or know of any fixes?

I've no idea what is causing it but whenever FCP behaves incorrectly it's always worth trashing the preferences.
Corrupt preferences can create a vast range of different symptoms, so whenever FCP  stops working properly in any way, trashing the preferences should be the first thing you do using this free app.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Shut down FCP, open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-
    1. Ensure that  only FCP   is selected.
    2. Click Trash
The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP .

  • Shake vs Smooth Cam

I have some 1920 x 1080 29.97fps clips that need to be smoothed out. FCP has two options the Smooth Cam filter or export to Shake. Which does the better job? Smooth Cam appears to be quicker and easier to operate. Is there an appreciable difference between the quality outputs of them?
    Thanks
    Kent

The smoothcam code was ported from Shake to FCP, so I'm thinking they'll both do the same job...

  • Urgent: left and right cut off when dragging entire clip to project

When I right click the clips in the event library and click "Select entire clip" and drag that to the project window, the left and right sides of the video are cut off.  If I select only a single clip and drag that up or a portion of a clip, it looks ok.  I need to get this thing done in an hour or so and I am baffled because there are people in this video that are being cut off!  Help!

Actually, the more I look at it, the entire frame is cropped, even though I have "Initial Video Placement" set to fit in frame, not crop.  The quality really gets lousy too when dragging them in.  I am baffled why dragging a single clip fits the entire video, but dragging the entire clip series gets cropped...??

  • Smooth Cam on interlaced video

I am trying to use the Smooth Cam node on video shot at 29 frames a second. I have had good luck in the past using 24 frame footage shot using the P2 cards for the Panasonic HVX-200 but this time I am using footage shot on miniDV. The problem is there is noticiable motion blur. Is there any way to help smooth that out and make it look better?
    Thanks,

I have followed the steps of the tutorial " Using Shake to Remove the Shakes" that can be found here (for free) : http://www.rippletraining.com/engine/ripplecasts.html with impressive results from dv footage.
If I remember well deinterlacing was requested. Of course results may vary because good and bad's subjective...but it's worth a look!

Just discovered this nifty little bug myself today. Boy, Leopard is really bug city, I'm definitely regretting the upgrade. I was glad to find the 'show in mailbox' trick, although then once I went to re-send the message, it duplicated it for some reason and sent it twice, so now my business contact thinks I'm a moron because I sent him this super large attachment TWICE thanks to moronic Mail.app.
Another interesting thing though, is that after finding the email via 'show in mailbox' and opening it, it actually displayed the MP3 attachment as the old Tiger quicktime player (w/progress bar) as opposed to when I first composed the message and it would only display it as an icon. I thought they had just removed that feature for some reason, but nope! Another bug!
