Smooth Scrolling Credits for FCP !#$#

To start, I am creating scrolling credits from scratch in Motion 2 to import into my NTSC-DV FCP5 session.
I had accomplished beautiful scrolling credits in Motion to FCP about 6 months ago and cannot for the life of me produce good looking scrolling credits again! I have gone through this forum and there are about 100 different ideas out there...export using the animation codec with "render fields" selected, simply import the Motion session into FCP and render it, use large fonts, use the "scroll up" behavior, use keyframing... I have even tried After Effects which was WAY easier than Motion but produced similar fluttering effects.
Any way I try to do it, the scrolling text always comes out in FCP after rendering (and viewing on an external monitor) with the all too common jagged scroll...like the letters are fluttering in between fields as they scroll up..
My latest atempt in Motion to create this scrolling text consists of this:
1) Open an NTSCDV session in Motion
2) Using the text tool I write in my credits in the "Inspector" under the "text" tab
3) I then appply the "scroll up" behavior to the text from the "Add Behavior/Text Animation" dropdown menu at the top of the screen.
4) The record light below the canvas is on, I goto the newly added "Scroll Up" behavior in the "Inspector" under the "Behaviors" tab and there is a keyframe already added at the beginning of the "Scroll Up" layer in the timeline. I move the "Position Offset" slider down so the beginning (top) of the text is right below the bottom of the screen.
5) I then move to the end of the "Scroll Up" layer in the timeline (which is 30 seconds long BTW), add another keyframe in the "Scroll Up" layer and slide the "Position Offset" slider so that my text has just disappeared at the top of my screen.
6) I drag the cursor through the 30 second roll in the timeline verifying that it scrolls up the way I want.
7) I ensure the project properties are set correctly before I save. This includes making sure the field order is set to "Lower" in the "General" tab, and in the "Render Settings" tab making sure the output antialiasing method is set to "Best" and that "Use dithering" IS checked. In the Motion Blur setting the samples are set to "8" and the shutter angle is set to 360.
8) I then save the project, import the project file into my FCP NTSCDV session, drag it to the timeline, render it, and playback to an external monitor.
Possible Problems:
1) I am thinking that maybe the text is scrolling up too slow and it is impossible to get clean text without the jagged/fluttering effect. As when I shorten the scroll to 20 seconds there is less of a fluttering effect (but it is impossible to read the text as it is scrolling up so fast)
2) There is some "Project Property" setting in Motion that I have messed up.
3) I should not be using the scroll up feature with keyframing but perhaps just keyframing the actual text itself to move up? (although I have tried this with worse results)
I have wasted hours trying different routes, reading the manual, searching this forum, to no avail. Who has the magic recipe I am looking for? Please help.

Bryan,
I attempted to adjust the white level, the field order, but don't think ever got to messing around with FCP's processing settings...I am actually encoding the film right now as I was under the gun and actually found the "scroll" plugin in FCP to work just as good if not better than Motion without any tweaking so had to roll wth that. I will attempt to tweak the Motion file again though as I cannot bear sub-par credits. Will also email you the Motion file if you don't mind.

  • Newb - smooth scrolling credits in AE ?

I am doing an intro title sequence for someone.
It consists of about three separate scrolling credits.    The scroll from bottom to top.
I have done the text in Photoshop and imported it into AE.
My problem is the text appears jerky as it scrolls up.
Is there anyway to get AE to give me the smoothest scroll possible ?

If you are using the expression that I posted above all you do is set the speed to a whole number. DO NOT USE fractions.
The stutter your talking about can be caused by a bunch of factors. There's something called a seven second rule and a bunch of other info available HERE. Read both articles in this FAQ.
To change the expression to scroll horizontally just flip the values to the other parts of the array.
Expression for horizontal movement instead of vertical:
    t = time;
    fr = t/thisComp.frameDuration;
    y = value [1];
s = 4; //Speed in pixels per frame must be a whole number
    x = value[0] - (fr * s);
    [x, y]
This expression gives you a little more freedom because you can position the layer anywhere you like in the comp and it will start crawling right to left.
To change the direction simply change the minus sign in the x method to a plus. To change this expression to a roll swithch the methods for x and y so Y is modified by time.
Let me explain the expression. the value[0] and value[1] declarations simply call up the original values of X and Y. The math is simple. We take time and divide it by duration of a single frame to give us a frame count in whole numbers. Then we subtract the frame number multiplied by the number of pixels we want to move from the original position. It's easy as pie.
    I hope this helps.
Judder can be caused by an interaction with the refresh rate of your screen and the frame rate, from the frame rate and the movement, or from playback errors using mpeg compression. It's a bugger for some motion. Horizontal and vertical movement of hard edges like you get from text can be extremely problematic.

  • Importing .rtf into Motion for scrolling credits

I am trying to import an .rtf file into Motion (3) to create scrolling credits for a video, but Motion won't allow me to import it.

You need to copy and paste into a text object, but I'm not sure that rtf formatting support was added until Motion 4.
I would just create them from scratch in Motion.

  • YouTube cuts off scrolling credits??

Twice I have produced 2 minute videos with scrolling credits for YouTube and later found that the uploaded video ends, cleanly, without the credits. The credits were made with the standard scrolling credits template in Final Cut X and the video was exported as a master file with default settings. Maybe it would make a difference to upload dirctly to YouTube with the built-in feature, but I made the videos for work & they wanted to upload themselves onto the institutional YouTube account. Has this happened to anyone &, if so, how have you fixed or prevented it? Does YouTube have a problem reading the programming of that particular dynamic template? I have a dynamic lens flare template overlay in a couple of places and that worked fine. THANKS for any suggestions.

I had never heard of such issue before. I don't think that is common.
Are you sure the videos weren't trimmed by someone before posting to youtube?
I did a small test with 19 seconds of credits at the end and it came out correctly.
You can make a test yourself and see if the same happens.

  • IMovie '11 Scrolling Credits

I'm using Scrolling Credits for the last clip in my movie. The credits whizzed past, and some research led me to try lengthening the clip over which the title is placed, and to lengthen the title bar to match. I can read the credits now, but they finish long before the clip does, so I have a black screen and music playing for about 15 seconds. No matter how I set the lengths, the end of the scrolling ends in about half the time allotted. If the clip is set for 30 seconds, the scroll takes 15 seconds. If the clip is set for 5 seconds, the scroll takes 2.5 seconds. How do I make the title last the same amout of time as the clip?

I can. If I could only make the title longer than the clip, that would work. I can't extend the blue bar past the end of the clip. And no matter how long or short I make the clip, the title scrolls past in half the time. If it's long enough to slow it down to reading speed, that means I've got 15 or 20 seconds of black background and music going on after the credits are done.
I want to know how to make the credits last the same amount of time as the clip. Please note that extending the duration of the clip and the title does not help. The title remains visible for half of the duration of the clip, whether it's 10 seconds or 10 minutes.

  • Smooth scrolling + alternate layout

    Hi..
Im tryin to make a smooth scrolling article, for both horizontal and vertical use.
After creating the horizontal page, I try to do the vertical via 'Create Alternate Layout', and change the dimensions.
So far so good. The problem is, that the vertical page upscales the content – while the horizontal looks fine – when previewing the article..
If I do it the other way around (starting with the vertical page), the horizontal page downscales the content..
Doeas anyone know what could be the problem?
    Thanks in advance!

And make sure the article is set to Smooth Scrolling in both directions.

  • Scrolling Credits???

I just tried to use this feature for the first time and successfully completed all the steps to add text to video and . . . IT DOESN'T SCROLL!
Only a portion of the text is displayed, is there a limit to how many characters can be entered?
BTW, why is there no scroll bar in the window where one enters text? If more than that little window is filled, there doesn't seem to be a way to get from top to bottom.

A scrolling credit usually looks like
    Actor A Their Role
    Actor B Their Role
You can move from the Actor A box to the Their Role box using the Tab Key. When you have used up all the Actor boxes, you can add more lines using the Tab key.
You can use the scrolling credits for more the Actors/Roles but the principle is the same.

  • Scrolling End Credits in FCP using PS

I'm back at this again - after a few years. We've switched our format (this one shot on RED) - PS titles set up as 1920x20000; video sequence is 1920...
    First when I brought them in they were squished/distorted...when I played with scale & distortion (what should distortion 'be' set at anyway?) I got more problems than answers;
Now, when I think I'm on to something after re-reading some threads, watching vid tutorials, etc I'm trying to import my PS doc (layers merged/transparent background) I get the following error in FCP: File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown....I have no idea what this means. Usually this trick worked like a charm & now I'm re-stumped. Anyone run into this problem?
sigh Oh for a decent easy scrolling titler......
    Thanks.

The default for FCP is to scale imported items to fit the timeline. In your case, you must disable that action. But a 20k-tall file could be an issue no matter what. I'd plan on breaking that up into four segments that all travel at the same speed so there are no visible breaks. Scale should be 100%, Distortion Aspect Ratio should be 0.

You can search for the error, we see it often around here. The causes and cures are numerous and confusing. Could be the file is actually locked, could be you don't have access to the drive. Could just be too darned big, could be CMYK instead of RGB.
    Carrie Rossow wrote:

You can use any of the available tools to create scrolling text. But most video text tools are not designed to be typographical tools for the extraordinarily creative or to satisfy commonly employed credit formats. Most of us use Photoshop or another text-friendly editor to exert the most control over the typography and layout.
Of additional interest will be how you render the scrolling. You will want to view the results carefully to determine if the pixel accuracy is suitable to your display. When I stay for the credits at a digital IMAX show, I am bothered by the jumpiness. When I view a 35mm film, I'm delighted by the smoothness. What are your needs?

  • Scripting the lenght of a page (for smooth scrolling in DPS)

    Hi, folks
I am quite a layman in this scripting world but I have a question that I would really need answered. It's not so much a question of 'how' but one of 'is this possible with scripting'?
We want to set up a system where the pages would be automatically created with XML input from a short set of templates so that they end as indesign documents in a given folder.
We have a very clear idea now on how to do that. But now, I have to take a design decission: Should I try using "one-page articles" with pages of variable lengt depending on the size of the body text frame? (so that they make afterwards smooth scrolling in Adobe DPS)?
What refrains me from doing that is that body text will be variable in size and lenght. So... I cannot predetermine which length must have the main frame in the pages and, consequently, I cannot predetermine the lenght of the pages (expressed as top margin + body frame length + bottom margin).
The question for scripting: Is it possible that you may run a script that does this?
    - Text is input into the main body text frame via XML import.
    - Frame is resized so that it fits with content (no more, no less).
    - Page is then resized so that (expressed as top margin + body frame length + bottom margin) it keeps designed proportions.
I hope what I want is clear enough, because that is the doubt that is stopping me from trying the one long page winding way. Any idea, please?
    Thanks a lot
    Gustavo (Posting from Madrid)

    Hi Gustavo,
yes you can accomplish what you are describing with InDesign scripting.
Instead of creating a smooth scrolling page you could even create a frame with scrollable
content on the template an fill the scrollable content with text.
That way you will not have empty spots on the page.
That sounds like an exiting project which combines InDesign, DPS and scripting skills.

  • How do I eliminate shaky text from scrolling credits?

I have added scrolling credits to a video and the scroll is not smooth.  There is no stabilization or shutter roll mechanism to use with built-in, FCPX text and titles.  So, how do I eliminate the shake from scrolling credits?

  • How do I make scrolling credits title stop moving and leave text on screen?

Hi,  I have used the scrolling credits title template to end my first FCP X video ( I'm a newbie using the trial version). I want to slow down the speed of the scrolling and then have it end with the text remaining static so that veiwers can read the credits. At the moment it goes too fast and ends before you have a chance to read the names etc. I want to leave the text stationary for a few seconds so that the contact details can be seen.
How do I do this. I have not bought Motion just yet as I am still using the Trial version. Does anyone know of a good clear online tutorial  that demonstartes this?
    Thanks

Create a compound clip from the credits clip. Select the clip. Position the playhead where you want it to be stationary, Shift-H to hold.

  • FCPX: Shaky Scrolling Credits

I just finished my first video in FCPX (trial, with possible intention of buying) but I notice that when I play it back in YouTube, the credits seem to hesitate a little. They are not as smooth scrolling as I would like them to be. Is there a reason for this?

With the whole text block selected in the Text tab click on Show opposite Face.
You can then select words in the Text tab or in the viewer and change the face color.

  • How can I make the Smooth Scrolling option in the Advanced menu apply ONLY to the tab bar?

So, I'm one of those people who usually have 60+ tabs open at any given time. I'm also on a Lenovo laptop with a trackpoint (that may be relevant later).
Right now, I have smooth scrolling disabled.
In previous versions of Firefox, if I sat my cursor on the tab bar and scrolled either up or down, it would scroll across my tab bar at a constant, quick rate, usually taking about two or three seconds to reach the end. This wasn't an animated scroll (I've disabled that animated scroll via about:config in the current Firefox version).
However, now, it's doing something different. There's acceleration to the scroll. If I just tap the scroll in either direction, it scrolls only a few tabs. However, if I hold the scroll for a second, it instantaneously takes me to the far end of the tab bar, completely skipping at least thirty tabs in between.
I have tab scroll buttons added by Tab Mix Plus (smooth scrolling is also not enabled in that addon), and the same accelerating behavior occurs there. One or two taps of the button moves the bar a few tabs to the left or right, but several taps in quick succession takes me all the way to the far end of the bar.
I can restore the old scrolling behavior for the tab bar by turning on smooth scrolling in the Options > Advanced menu, but that turns on smooth scrolling for web pages at the same time. I don't like the web page smooth scrolling, and would rather not have it on.
Or if there's any other way to make it so that scrolling the tab bar moves the tab bar a fixed amount no matter what, that would be great.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

That  was great job. You have implemented smooth scrolling for List..  Based  upon that I have implemented the same in datagrid also..But I am facing  couple of issues...
        1.  I have Item renderer Text..  With in that text I am displaying almost 90 records and it has a huge  height. Accordingly the row height must change .. But what happend in my  case is the data is overlapped on the second row.. the row height  changes to certain height. after that it is not expanding.. records are  displaying and overlapped on the second row and if it still lengthy it  displayed on the third row also... so How can I solve this issue.. The  row height must vary with the itemrenderer..
    2. Second  one is If I scroll vertically it is scrolling smoothly fine. But If I  release the mouse the scroller going to Row end position or row starting  position..

  • Smooth scrolling on a horizontal page - how did Benjamin Moore do it?

    Hi,
I'm trying to work out how Benjamin Moore did this (in their COLOURSTORIES Canadian Version). We're looking to do something similar (Different content on the horizontal and vertical formats), but can't work out how Benjamin Moore managed to get a scrolling horizontal page.
    The screen shot is below:
We're looking, if possible, to have the horizontal and vertical versions of each article smooth scrolling.
    Is this possible?
Also, is there a static URL for the features & bug fixes for the most recent release? I'm finding that even searching the forum thows up "This is fixed in the new release" without any reference to what the release is (v21, v22 etc). T'would be a help!
    Cheers,
    Simon.

Thanks Bob - my problem was not realising the "Scrolling direction" relates to the orientation of the orientation of the articles, and not as the name suggests the scrolling direction. Another fact stored in the noggin for future use
