Smooth Scrolling made clear and easy

A new folio appeared in Bob Bringhurst's jewel app "DPS Tips", discussing all kinds of special content and interaction. In the Smooth Scrolling section it states that you cannot create Smooth Scrolling articles simply by "Adding" an article. This should be achieved by "Importing" Articles. And it specifically states that you can't create horizontally scrolling articles. This baffles me ! I know it can be a bit tricky, but when explained and understood carefully, there's no problem in using the "Add" button or even to create a horizontally scrolling article on the fly.
The tricky part is, how the InDesign file (an article's half) is 'born'. To be able to use the "Add" button to create a properly scrolling article, you must check that the Document Setup upon making a new file (or even later on) is set to the proper single-page size (in a 3:4 dimension) and with the desired orientation (landscape or portrait), before you hit the "Add" button. Because this is where the Folio Builder gets its information from about the dimension and orientation. Afterwards, you set the page's length with the Page Selection tool – but take care: ONLY the length ! DO NOT use the width or orientation properties with this tool, nor use the Height setting in the Document Setup, although these seem very obvious for this task. You can even correct a page afterwards, and get the "adding" right (and lengthen it properly) if it has been malformed and unaccepted by the Folio Builder before.
So, to conclude: start a scrolling page with a single page, normal size (1024x768), landscape or portrait, add it to the Folio, and then lengthen the page with the Page tool's Height setting. Don't forget to set the Smooth Scrolling option accordingly among the Article's properties in the Folio Builder panel. No big deal !

That's indeed the culprit: when you have already set the elongated landscape page upon New Document. But it's still easy to correct that afterwards: switch it back to 768 in Document Settings (the cropped content becomes invisible but remains in place), aAdd the layout (it will become the landscape version), and stretch the page to the desired length with the Page tool's Height property.
Both methods can be difficult, depending on the way you prefer to work. Visual designers who already find it hard to keep track of a Package folder will shiver upon seeing the rigid hierarchy of a Folio folder; technical users won't mind preparing a folder stucture like that. Using ADPS requires many more unlogical steps than just this, like updating a design (not at folio or layout level, but only the whole Article) or discovering that one missing or extraneous orientation prevents the folio to be previewed.
So either way it is fishy...
But I'm glad that this aspect will be tackled by an update, soon !

  • Smooth Scrolling Article, Anchors, and Static Navigation

    Hi!
Quick question on a smooth scrolling article:
Let's say I have a very wide article, roughly 30,000 pixels wide with lots of photos, info, etc.. Would it be possible to have a "floating" navigation on top of this wide article?
Something sort of like this: http://i.gyazo.com/a3e5266bb08fcc7625710ff0bb0c86fa.png
The article would of course continue via the smooth scroll style.. but those square buttons below: I know I could link them to smooth scroll to a certain % of the page, but what if I want them to be available down there regardless if I keep scrolling right? In a sense, a "fixed" navigation for the page.
    Thank you.

I see. Hmm.. I bet one solution that would answer both the smooth scrolling, the navigation, and the memory problem would be:
What if I have say 20 pages, that are horizontal format. Each one has the timeline at the bottom which links to the corresponding page, such as a month (Jan) for page 1.
The client basically wants a long, seamless sequence of events in a timeline style where when you swipe left or right, they feel connected but have their own images, info, etc., but the background would be seamless. They want a way to navigate between each event via a timeline at the bottom.

  • C3-01 screen smooth scrolling?

any tips on how to get the screen to scroll smoothly? When I first got this I was told by several people it just takes time to get used to a touch screen & soon I would love it!  Well had it a year now & I still cant get it to scroll smoothly especially on web pages!

    For opera mini-
Go to settings-privacy-clear history, clear username & password, clear cookies.
Clearing cookies will log out all your sessions & free up a lot of memory. Will be a good thing if you use facebook & do general browsing on the same browser as facebook tracks everything even when your are logged out. Clearing cookies after logging out will prevent it & give smooth scrolling.
Clearing username & passwords will delete all the unsaved/saved usernames & passwords. You may slip this step if you want to retain them, but it will be better if you clear them off as it takes up a lot of browser memory. Also anyone can log in if usernames & passwords are saved.
I don't have any idea about orange browser but if its a wap browser then you will need to clear the cache. Also during browsing just before you exit, press options-tools-clear browsing history, clear cookies, saved form info & the last option too (if u want to clear them).
You may try different browsers for different things. E.g. I Use the built in om5 for twitter, om 7 for support discussions board, nokia browser for misc browsing, ibrowser for downloads.
Please mark the post as solution if it solves your problem.

  • Trouble making the text in scrolling credits (made on Final Cut Express) export clear and not fuzzy

I am having difficulty making the text in the scrolling credits in Final Cut Express clear and not fuzzy. I went under effects, then clicked video generators, then text, then scrolling text to get the scrolling credits working. I tried using the Chroma Keyer effect and the Color Key Effect. These work on captions on video and beginning titles but not the scrolling text. All of those were made on livetype so maybe that is why. I would really appreciate some help. I've been working on this all day. I was on the technical support line for about 40 minutes and they told me there is no more help given over the phone for Final Cut Express and that I should go on here and see if anyone can answer my question. I looked on all the forums and there was nothing on this subject. Thanks.

The software is not doing what it should be doing.  We have all had this type of problem.  It is nearly always somehow in the way the software is being used.  Look at your added Chromakey and color key.  You must be doing something that the FCE does not like.  Open a new project and new sequence and try the exact same thing.  (I use titles from LiveType and from the effects tab and have no problems)

  • How can I get back the two button smooth scroll with Logitec optical marble mouse since Adobe Acrobat or FireFox updates on 10/26/2010 made it quit?

Oct 25, 26 or 27 both Adobe Acrobat and Mozilla Firefox alerted me they had updates to install. Since I trust them both I installed them. However, since then my optical marble mouse from Logitech acted strangely different. The cursor did not move as usual. It didn't respond right. I thought it might have needed the dust wiped out, so I did that. It still acted sluggish when I tried to move it, it was as though it was "spinning its wheels" not going anywhere. I went to the Control Panel clicked on Mouse, and proceeded to look at the settings and set them to default. I then tried to use the universal scroll by clicking the two big buttons which showed a circle with cross hair arrows as usual. When the marble was moved forward or backward, the scroll had always been smooth allowing one to read the screen evenly and without holding any button down. Now it was jerky. Is this a problem from the last update? My version of Firefox is 3.6.12
    Thank you

I am happy to see another person is having this jerky scroll situation with the latest update to Firefox on October 27. I did check my I.E browser and '''THAT BROWSER''' still does the nice smooth scroll....let's get 'er fixed Mozilla! I know you can!

  • Smooth scrolling long articles still snaps on iPad retina and mini

I have some long articles (between 6000px and 9000px). On the iPad 1 the smooth scroll  works fine, but on the iPad retina and mini the articles are snapping to undefined points in the article. Now the articles are impossible to read on the iPad retina and mini. Using PFD or JPG in the article properties doesn’t matter.
Anyone knows why this works on iPad 01 and doesn’t work in the retina and mini version? THX
    Bests, Puck

    Hi Bob,
    Thank you for replying.
I just need one image in each state though -- that is shown anytime a user clicks on a button, so how would I limit the functionality of an image sequence to just show one photo while creating an MSO with a button? Would that mean creating a folder per image with one 01.jpg image in it and then making these 3 placeholders into an MSO? It seems to me that an image sequence is not providing the functionality I want and this is some sort of a hack unless I am misunderstanding its function.
Sounds like a lot of redudant work instead of having a simpler way to show an MSO with high-res photos on an iPad 3/4 and smaller images on iPad 1/2 and Mini.
    Thanks,

  • Edge and iPad- creating a smooth scrolling carousel

    Hey all,
I am looking at making a demo for something within my ipad.  I'm basically loading a website on the ipad.
What I'm trying to create however is a smooth scrolling carousel within the site, something similar to this:
    http://dimsemenov.com/plugins/touchcarousel/#carousel-gallery  (example 2)
When viewed on a touch device (and even on a pc with a mouse) the images scroll really nicely, elastic - similar to how the ipad scrolls anyway.
I want to create the same within edge.  Is that possible?   I did try just creating a DIV and setting the overflow to scroll -- that sort of works, although it doesn't have
the elastic scroll properties that I was hoping for - plus sometimes the div scrolls, sometimes the actual website itself moves...
Any ideas/thoughts on how this could be done?
    Thanks in advance!!

Hello.DId you find any solution? i'm looking for this too.

  • Scripting the lenght of a page (for smooth scrolling in DPS)

    Hi, folks
I am quite a layman in this scripting world but I have a question that I would really need answered. It's not so much a question of 'how' but one of 'is this possible with scripting'?
We want to set up a system where the pages would be automatically created with XML input from a short set of templates so that they end as indesign documents in a given folder.
We have a very clear idea now on how to do that. But now, I have to take a design decission: Should I try using "one-page articles" with pages of variable lengt depending on the size of the body text frame? (so that they make afterwards smooth scrolling in Adobe DPS)?
What refrains me from doing that is that body text will be variable in size and lenght. So... I cannot predetermine which length must have the main frame in the pages and, consequently, I cannot predetermine the lenght of the pages (expressed as top margin + body frame length + bottom margin).
The question for scripting: Is it possible that you may run a script that does this?
    - Text is input into the main body text frame via XML import.
    - Frame is resized so that it fits with content (no more, no less).
    - Page is then resized so that (expressed as top margin + body frame length + bottom margin) it keeps designed proportions.
I hope what I want is clear enough, because that is the doubt that is stopping me from trying the one long page winding way. Any idea, please?
    Thanks a lot
    Gustavo (Posting from Madrid)

    Hi Gustavo,
yes you can accomplish what you are describing with InDesign scripting.
Instead of creating a smooth scrolling page you could even create a frame with scrollable
content on the template an fill the scrollable content with text.
That way you will not have empty spots on the page.
That sounds like an exiting project which combines InDesign, DPS and scripting skills.

  • Need help with smooth scrolling of a sprite

    Hi All,
Something that i have had many problems over the years with
is creating the same nice smooth scrolling effect that i see on
many sites (my scrolling always appears jerky in AS2 even when done
on a movieClip with a high framerate - with onEnterFrame updates).
At the moment i am building my first AS3 site, and want to
use it as an opportunity to "do things right".
So far i have a very simple setup that is scrolling a sprite
that contains a series of loaded images based on the position of a
scrollbar. As one would expect from something this simple - it is
    rather jerky.
I tried a number of variations of using a Tween to do the
scroll, and kill/update that tween when the mouse moves again.
However in all cases the results were not good (multiple tweens
seemed to still be active - so killing the tween wasn't working).
So clearly i am doing something wrong.
I have searched extensively, but have not come across any
examples that seem appropriate (some predefined components - but
that does not help me understand the fundamentals) . I have seen
some examples that register a timer, and manually calculate the
offset for each frame, is this the correct approach?
Below is my existing simple (jerky) implementation.
All help to understand how to make this scrolling smooth
    would be hugely appreciated.
One more thing to add incase it is relevant, is that the
contents of the Sprite are a series of jpg images loaded with the
Loader class (although i plan on switching to using the BulkLoader
class created by a developer in the AS3 community).

nope. the approach for the smoothest tween would be to:
    1. initialize your parameters
    2. create your timer.
    3. add your timer's listener method when needed (when your
    slider is clicked).
    4. in your timer's listener function repeatedly poll the
slider's position and update your sprite using the parameters
    determined in 1.
    5. remove your listener when the slider is released.

  • Can you add smooth scrolling in the next update?

It would be very, very, VERRRYY nice if they added Smooth Scrolling in an update of Safari.
IE, Firefox and Chrome support it, and I think that actually, alot of people didn't notice or want this feature.
So.. please add it, pretty please, because I and alot of others prefer Safari to other browsers...

Apple is trying to slowly slice ties with Google so that is why they removed the YouTube app as well as made their own Maps app.
Google has already made their own YouTube app that is on the App Store for free but right now it is only for iPhone, they will release a version for the iPad soon.

  • Horizontal Scrolling without Smooth Scrolling?

    Hello,
I'm building an iPad presentation in InDesign using the DPS features. I'd like to make my presentation scroll through the pages horizontally, is this possible without activating smooth scrolling?

Right I see, thankyou. This is one of my first iPad presentations made using the DPS features. I've still got to get my head around some of the tips and tricks.

  • Smooth scrolling using a magic mouse

    Hi all,
I've recently made the switch to Mac (sporting a MacBook Pro 15" retina early 2013) from Windows. I'm still using Windows through Parallels since I need to use Visual Studio for my work as a developer.
Currently, I'm using a Razor DeathAdder mouse because it's simple, ergonomic (at least to my hand) However, scrolling in both OSX (10.9.4) and Windows (8.1) is a bit annoying since it's not smooth at all. It's quite "laggy", so to speak. Like it's scrolling in steps. I've tried some third party apps for OSX, but none of them have done the job in makeing the scrolling smoother.
Then I came to think: if I use the Magic Mouse from Apple, will I get the same smooth scrolling as I do on the touchpad? Because in both OSX and Windows, it's really nice and smooth when using the touchpad on the MacBook :-)
Can anyone confirm that scrolling is as smooth on the Magic Mouse, as it is on the touchpad in both OSX and Windows?
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    All the best,
    Bo

Scrolling with the magic mouse is nice and smooth for me in both OS X and Windows (running in VirtualBox, I don't have boot camp set up as I don't need Windows that often any more and definitely have no need to boot it 'raw').

  • Smooth scrolling articles viewed on the Content Viewer going out of shape

When a smooth scrolling article is shared and viewed on the Content Viewer the last section of the article is often doubled in size. It looks peculiar and it becomes impossible to read. Are you aware of the situation? Is there a solution to this?

Hi Neil! Thank you very much for replying so quickly. I am not sure what the acronym ACV means. The display of the smooth scrolling articles on the iPad is perfect. It goes weird only in the Content Viewer. I checked the smooth scrolling articles made accross all the brands own by Rogers and I certify that the problem happens with all the smooth scrolling articles.

  • Smooth scrolling horizontally rather than vertically

Hi is it possible to have smooth scrolling set from left to right rather than up and down, I've done some research into smooth scrolling and all i could find was articles showing smooth scrolling vertically. If this is not possible is there another way to set a horizontal scrolling long page?
    Cheers
    Clinton

Hi Thanks for your response, did you mean using the scrollable frames overlay? or in the builder set the Article behaviour to smooth scroll horizontally? I basically wanted to have a  really long horizontal scroller made up of a series of images. I've tried the scrollable frames overlay however once you filck to the scrollable page it locks you on the page and the only way to get out of it is to select a different chapter in the bookmarks. I've also tried setting the behaviour to smooth scroll horizontally however it still snaps to the individual pages, id prefer if you could scroll between pages? (im previewing on the content viewer for ipad, not sure if this has anything to do with it?)

  • PS Elements 5 (Making images clearer and importing images into PSE)

    Hello,
My boss just took a class on elements 5. He said that his instructor brought up a slighlty below average photograph of a fish in a tank and instantly made it clearer and brighter in just a few clicks. Could you tell me the steps to do that?
Also, he says he is sick of going on his desktop to get his photos. Is there a way you can import them into PS Elements 5.0, so that they are right there in the program on the right?
Please let me know when you can. I really appreciate the guidance.

    Hi L.S.
The problem with something like that is... the person doing the instruction
could take what is called a "stock image" that is used to demonstrate a
"fix" technique. This technique, as I think Colin is pointing out won't
    necessarily work for another image.
As for the images on the desktop, PSE can move images for you, but it sounds
like you might want to take a course in Windows so that you understand how
    to move files around.
If you are thinking of something specific, we can definitely help you
here... just tell us what you want to do... for example "fix a picture" is
not really that specific, but "lighten" or "darken" colours is a little
easier for us to help you with.
    Cheers
