SmoothCam Filter Disappeared

Hi Everybody-
My SmoothCam filter is no longer listed as an option with the other filters. I have not used this filter in a few months, but I did un-install and re-install my FCS2 package (about a month ago) in order to get Compressor working again. Maybe that has something to do with its disappearance. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Isaiah Smith

Certain effects might be turned off by default, depending on the capabilities of your computer.
but I did un-install and re-install my FCS2 package (about a month ago)
Which would have set it to default values.
From the menu bar: Effects > Effect Availabilty > All Effects will turn everything on regardless of whether your computer can process them in real-time or otherwise.

  • Smoothcam filter

Hi everyone. Im using fcp 7 and trying to use the smoothcam filter, my clip is only 5 seconds long and its saying that its going to take 16 hours to do its thing. I see on youtube tutorials on how to use it but no settings, and it only takes them a few seconds to analyze the clip. I'm using a macbook pro with 4 gigs of memory. Is my machine too slow for this filter or am I doing something wrong? the clip im using really isn't that bad at all, just trying to make it better.

    Hi Tony,
simple, Smoothcam is attempting to analyze the entire media file the clip relies on.
Set an in and out point in the timeline to export the clip you want to smoothcam as QT movie self-contained (this will produce an exact copy of the clip) then bring that in the timeline and apply Smoothcam on the newly created 5 seconds clip.

  • Can't use Smoothcam filter

I have an AVI file in Final Cut and want to use the smoothcam filter but when Iclick on it nothing happens. I get the same result when I thow it on to the timeline manually. Do I have to convert this file to an .MOV in order for smoothcam to work. and if so if when using Mpeg Steamclip for this conversion what is the best codec to use?
    Thanks
    Jeff

Yes, I wouldn't use AVI files while editing with FCP.
If your footage was originally shot on DV then convert it to DV, MPEGstreamclip can do that!

  • Library filter disappeared

My library filter disappeared when I installed 2.1RC1 over 2.0 on Vista. On XP, it's still there. Does anyone know where it may be hiding? Is there some way I may have disabled it on accident? I can't see a way to disable it on the copy that's working, and I miss it dearly.

  • SmoothCam filter estimates 5 hours to analyze a 9 second clip???

So I have FCS 3 and SnoLeopard and I tried to use the SmoothCam filter for the first time. There were no other filters applied, no motion at all, and no speed adjustments. It began to analyze and estimated 5 hours, no 6, no 7 hours to analyze this 9 second long clip. Standard DVCam footage, nothing unusual about it.
I got this system used and so far it has performed perfectly but I'm wondering if there's something in the configuration that might be creating a bottle neck.
I'd like to run my system specs by some experts to see if you know any reason why it should take that long.
It's a Mac Pro with 2 x Dual Core Intel Xeon 3Ghz processors. I'm assuming 2 dual cores should perform the same as a quad core generally.
Graphic Card is a ATI Radeon X1900 PCIe x16 with 512megs of ram.
    System Memory is 2 Gigs, thats 4 x 512 meg DDR2 FB-DIMM 667MHz ( I realize this might be a little low and I've already ordered an additional 4 Gigs. )
FCPro version is Final Cut Studio 3.0
Do you have any suggestion what could be choking this thing? I don't know if this particular Radeon card (X1900) is a low end card or not. If it is, can someone recommend a better card for this machine?
Any suggestions you can make would be greatly appreciated.

I never would have guessed what was the problem and I'm no noob. I started out on FCPro version 2 on OS9. Seems like very poor planing on the part of the design engineer to have it analyzed the entire captured file. They need to process it with handles, one or two seconds on either side of the in and out points.
    <
We've wondered why setting in and out points does not translate immediately to IN and OUT to Smoothcam. There are workarounds. Sorry about the presumptuous assumption. the issues with optical flow grabbing the entire media have been known for years.
    <div class="jive-quote">But again, thanks. The info was priceless!< </div>
So the question is actually answered? You got something out of me besides attitude? Cool.

  • Smoothcam filter attached to clip but being ignored?

I moved raw files around and reconnected the media in FCP, but for some reason the SmoothCam filter that was associated with the clips doesn't seem to be working anymore even though I re-rendered. I also tried removing the filter and re-processing the filter and re-rendering again.
The filter shows up in Filter tab for each clip as being attached and working, but it's obvious that its being ignored when I play the clip from the timeline.
    Any thoughts?

Go to the original folders where your files were stored and look for files with white icons and .mtdf extentions. These files contain smoothcam analysis data. Move those files to the same location of the smoothcamed files or simply trash them>remove smoothcam filter and apply it again. In the latter case the new .mtdf files will appear in the current movie files location.

  • Losing smoothcam filter after mpeg compression

Hi,  I used the smoothcam filter on a few clips within an 1hr 20 mins project.  After rendering, these play fine in FCP7.  However after mpeg compression (dvd 90 mins best qual) in Compressor 3.5.3 the effect is either lost or struggles causing unwanted artifacts.
I'm wondering how to solve this.  The format is HDV Pal 1080i using this as the sequence preset in FCP7.  My capture scratch disc is a Lacie 1tb hard drive via usb 2.0
On advice I trashed preferences (FCP and Compressor) but didn't seem to solve anything and now I also have a problem with dropped frames and red render lines keep popping back in the timeline should I make further edits.
The whole thing is driving me crazy.  Does the HDV format have a problem with the smoothcam filter - do I need to transcode these sections?
    Any help appreciated.

Yes that's right - I was sending direct to compressor.  I exported a small section as you suggested and played it back with Quicktime and the problem remained.
A couple of points to note:
    - As I clicked 'Export>Quicktime Movie' and the dialogue box appeared I noticed all the red render bars for all the smoothcam clips appeared again in the timeline.  So it doesn't seem possible in this instance to commence an export without these render bars showing
    - If I play the clips within FCP after rendering and without making further edits the smoothcam filter works well

  • Need help: smoothcam filter not launching

can someone help me out please!
SmoothCam filter not showing any signs of life!
I highlight a clip, apply smoothcam and it never shows up

I think I figured something out. I captured all my footage with imovie which creates .dv clips. In FCP, Smoothcam filter will not apply to these .dv clips. If I convert the .dv clip to a .mov file using mpeg stream clip, smoothcam filter works fine on this clip in FCP.

  • Does Smoothcam Filter Soften Image Slightly ?

I have just used the Smoothcam filter on a 6 second clip and am quite impressed.
The original had rapid, vertical camera jitter and the filtered one is very smooth.
However, the sharpness does seem slightly softer though the overall effect is a big improvement.
Is this slight softening a feature of the process or is there a way to eliminate it ?
Don't get me wrong - I can live with the effect as it is.

    Hi Ian,
Smoothcam when applied involves zooming into the image, that means it can become softer.
The amount the frames are resized depends on the nature of the clip and the shaky movements.
You can manually correct the size parameters but be careful, the corners may show black areas appearing at times.

  • FCP6: Restoring resolution loss from using smoothcam filter on shaky clip

    Hi,
Any suggestions to how I can restore the resolution of a clip that has been "zoomed in" on through the use of the smoothcam filter in FCP 6?
The original clip was quite shaky, thus the need to use smoothcam.
I am happy with the clip being zoomed in on, but not with the resulting loss in resolution.
The footage was shot in DVCPRO HD 720p PAL.
Would using Red Giant's Instant HD filter work in restoring the resolution?

I'm now seeing that me stating that the rendered footage looks pristine in Canvas, isn't entirely true.
When the clip is viewed at any percentage in the Canvas OTHER than 100%, then the footage looks great. If Canvas is set to 100%, then you can see the "jitters" that will be created in export. I suspect that because 100% is interlaced, and any other %age is de-interlaced, and exported video I believe is interlaced, then maybe there is something not connecting in the smoothcam and interlacing language?
I found this on another forum and tested it empirically myself. The forum was old and archived so I wasn't able to reply to it. I re told the story and my experience here to see if anyone might know a solution.
Again, thank you for any and all help.

  • SmoothCam Filter not working.

I have footage I applied SmoothCam at default settings, as I did yesterday on different footage, and the motion is worse. All settings same on other very good clips.
It is almost as the motion is much worse.

Thanks to SoCal for answering. I think I have seen that tutorial before but always good to refresh.
Even after reviewing the tutorial mentioned above, the application of SmoothCam with the parameters up to 5 the clip stills seems to look as if the filter has aggravated movement instead of decreasing. All other clips I have filtered in the past have turned out beautiful. This time there is MORE movement.

  • SmoothCam Filter Missing

Since upgrading to Leopard and FCP 6.02 the SmoothCam video filter is missing from the pull down menu. Effects availability is selected to all. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Hi,
    welcome to this forum!
We are reading several complains about this topic.
I did not upgrade to 6.0.2 because I sensed that it could bring some unpleasant anomalies, however, my theory is that Smoothcam is not showing up in the VIDEO filters folder because its FXscript has been modified.
In a nutshell, the filter is essentially a code which is written in a similar way like HTML or other scripts.

I beleive Smoothcam path has been changed, however it should appear in you internal FXplugins system folders somewhere:
See if you can find it and also see if it has been moved to a different FX folder.
I recently learnt that Vignette filter has moved from STYLIZE folder to COLOR CORRECTION one (thanks to other posters).
    Please report your results.

  • Drop shadow filter disappears

    Hi,
I have applied drop shadow, in some places from the properties panel and in some places as AS3 code.
Both are visible on laptop, but when testing on mobile - all shadows disappear.
    Does someone know why?
    With many thanks in advance!

did you change to cpu and did that solve your problem?
if so, mark message 3 correct.
from Adobe Flash Platform * GPU rendering in mobile AIR applications
    GPU rendering mode limitations
The following limitations exist when using GPU rendering mode in AIR 2.5 and above:
If the GPU cannot render an object, it is not displayed at all. There is no fallback to CPU rendering.
The following blend modes are not supported: layer, alpha, erase, overlay, hardlight, lighten, and darken.
    Filters are not supported.
    PixelBender is not supported.
Many GPU units have a maximum texture size of 1024x1024. In ActionScript, this translates to the maximum final rendered size of a display object after all transformations.
Adobe does not recommend the use of GPU rendering mode in AIR applications that play video.
In GPU rendering mode, text fields are not always moved to a visible location when the virtual keyboard opens. To ensure that your text field is visible while the user enters text, do one of the following. Place the text field in the top half of the screen or move it to the top half of the screen when it receives focus.
GPU rendering mode is disabled for some devices on which the mode does not work reliably. See the AIR developer release notes for the latest information.
    GPU rendering mode best practices
The following guidelines can make GPU rendering faster:
Limit the numbers of items visible on stage. Each item takes some time to render and composite with the other items around it. When you no longer want to display a display object, set its visible property to false. Do not simply move it off stage, hide it behind another object, or set its alpha property to 0. If the display object is no longer needed at all, remove it from the stage with removeChild().
Reuse objects rather than creating and destroying them.
Make bitmaps in sizes that are close to, but less than, 2n by 2m bits. The dimensions do not have to be exact powers of 2, but they should be close to a power of 2, without being larger. For example, a 31-by-15-pixel image renders faster than a 33-by-17-pixel image. (31 and 15 are just less than powers of 2: 32 and 16.)
If possible, set the repeat parameter to false when calling the Graphic.beginBitmapFill() method.
Don't overdraw. Use the background color as a background. Don't layer large shapes on top of each other. There is a cost for every pixel that must be drawn.
Avoid shapes with long thin spikes, self -intersecting edges, or lots of fine detail along the edges. These shapes take longer to render than display objects with smooth edges.
Limit the size of display objects.
Enable cacheAsBitMap and cacheAsBitmapMatrix for display objects whose graphics aren’t updated frequently.
Avoid using the ActionScript drawing API (the Graphics class) to create graphics. When possible, create those objects statically at authoring time instead.
Scale bitmap assets to the final size before importing them.

Have you tried pressing H, as you cycle through it will show/hide the pins.
