SMS with ë or ï (6233)

I just found out that a SMS with words containing ë or ï (not tested voor ä or ü) gives problems sending the message.
It also breaks up a message with less than 160 characters in more than 1 parts.
Does anyone know if this is a software issue?
(Already send a mail to Nokia but they're not that fast,...)

It seems that using any character that is not in the plain latin set converts the entire SMS to a different encoding (UTF-16 with two bytes per character?) and probably also adds some metadata to the message.
Effectively instead of 160 characters you may type only 70 in a single SMS.
I don't know if it is a "standard" way of encoding SMSes with non-latin characters or if it is a phone issue. Whatever it is, I don't like that they are charging us more than twice as much for SMS just because we are using our national characters.
Why don't they use the UTF-8 encoding, so popular today in computers and web? With UTF-8, latin characters are still encoded on one byte and only other national characters need two bytes.
The only reason I can think of is that operators just want to charge us more

    It sounds like your 5800 has the earpiece fault that was common with 5800's made before February.
    You need to take it to a nokia care point for repair under warranty.

    Well yes, you probably will have problems with your phone because a 'contract free' phone is NOT the same as a fully unlocked iPhone.
    This is a user forum, so nobody here can really help you.  As Sprint is your carrier in the US, then you need to contact them first.  They are the only ones who can help you.

    The iPhone remembers information about previous contacts.
    Complelely independently, you have a Contacts app with a contacts list.  It sounds like your contacts list has 3 names on it.  You need to add a few names.

    Check the "Message validity" for the period that you
    have set for resending messages. If it's short, set
    it to "Maximum time". This will enable the Message
    center to keep resending the mesages.

  • IMessages being sent as SMS with Send as SMS turned off

    I had an unhappy experience with iMessage. I had about a 1 1/2 hour period on 4/9 where my iMessages were being sent as SMS texts. I have Send as SMS set to Off and I have never had this happen before. I don't remember the iMessages screen changing to indicate it was sending as SMS.
    Overall very strange since there should be no way that the messages were sent as SMS with Send as SMS turned off. This is a problem because  I do not have a messaging plan since I don't use SMS so if it switches to SMS and I don't know it the charges could rack up. The hour and a half cost me $8 in SMS charges as it is.
    If having Send as SMS set to off does not insure that messages are not sent as SMS texts then what will?

    Yes, they were listed as SMS messages on my bill. I was texting all day with one person but it was only this 1 1/2 hour period that was changed to SMS. Nothing before or after that and it's never happened before to me. All very strange. The problem is that if this happened for a longer period it would get very costly and I would not notice it untill I got the bill.
    I'm getting my gf to add her email address to her messages account and I will be messaging that from now on. Hopefully iMessage can't turn that into an SMS.
    It would be great if there were some way to actually prevent iMessage from sending SMS, but the Send as SMS setting obviously does not work. The only other thing I can think is that it was sending the texts as MMS messages. There is not much if any documentation on the relationship between MMS, SMS, and iMesssage.

    No problem I can explain if you like:
    1) many messages are sent in hurry - somobody dictates you a number and you think what to send - there's simply no time to enter number in address book
    2) in general I don't like to enter ANY numbers on telephone in address book at all, Nokia has terrible PIM and calendar (and two-way PC sync), so I prefer to enter all data directly on PC in Outlook, and later sync it to Nokia (but not vice versa). That's separate issue, but also deserves to be mentioned here.
    3) there are some service messages with my GSM provider, that have to be sent sometimes - to reset daily limits on incoming web-originated SMS, etc. It would be much easier just to "resend" this message.
    4) sometimes my close people whom I ask something by SMS just forget to do what I'm asking, so it's easy just to resend SMS with same content to the same person, just to remind her/him I'm missing reply or action on their side.
    More ideas? Enough for me....

    Hello I own a N91 4GB version. I have upgraded to version 2.20.008. I checked recently and have not found a newer version available for download.
    When composing an SMS a counter appears on the upper part of the screen, which shows how many characters remain and how many SMS(s) will be sent.
    When I use my native language, i.e. Greek, the counter starts as usual with 160 characters. When I type the first character it drops to 69 characters and then it works correctly decreasing the counter by 1. The result is that the phone sends more than 1 SMS even if there are no more than 160 characters.
    The problem does not appear if I use English characters.
    Is there a way to fix this? Do other users have the same problem?

    I haven't seen N91's exact menu but i suppose it has similarities with my N95. They both run S60.

    This is likely because your C# strings are unicode (wide). Use one-byte strings.

    Hi,
    I hope somebody with some SMS/SMPP experience would be able to fix the problem or
    advise as what to do. OK Now we have an application which is supposed to send an
    SMS to a recipient on certain occassions and this SMS might contain accented characters.
    Now in SMPP apparently we have three encoding schemes namely
    1) 7 bit GSM encoding
    2) 8 bit binary
    3) UCS-2
    Now the third one is out of question since it would reduce the size of the message
    to 70 characters which is not acceptable. 2nd one which is 8 bit binary with I assume
    DCS value 4(or at least thats what we are using) seems to support only latin characters.
    It works for latin characters i.e., iso-8859-1 which does have some accented characters.
    however for other than latin we have some problems e.g hex value for small phi in
    greek (iso-8859-7) is f6. If you look at the corresponding value of f6 in Latin 1(iso-8859-1)
    it is �. Now if you send greek characters setting the DCS value to 4 and u send three
    phi's what you would recieve on the recipient device are three �. So it seems that
    the 8 bit binary supports only iso-8859-1.
    Now if I try to do some encoding into GSM 7 bit. and send three phi's thought I dont
    recieve � but not phi's at the recieving end. The DCS value for the purpose I am
    using is 0. How am I encoding it to GSM 7 bit.

    Storing all the values in a Map in teh same order and then for each character in the
    message sending the byte value of the index. If I do a snoop in the snoop I see the
    right hex values as per GSM Encoding table but on the recipient device I see garbage.
    Any ideas as to how can greek and other european character set support be added to
    this application?
    Am I using the wrong DCS value or any body with some other ideas.

    I don't know about the exact character sets for the 7 and 8-bit SMS, but I doubt it's any different then character sets for anything else... So, in this case, the 7-bit set will only be able to handle the first 128 chars, which is A-Za-z0-9 and some punctuation. 8-bit would go into the extended ASCII chars in the table here:

    There might be some restrictions or differences.
    Basically, 7-bit is ASCII. 8-bit is ASCII+Extended or ISO8895-1. The chars your talking about sending get into the other ISO8895-X sets, which I believe would be out of range. The USC-2 should give you these, however. So either you send shorter messages, or you send ASCII text.
    It would also depeend on the device to be able to display those characters in the first place. Just like on any web site, if you don't have a font that has the necessary characters, it just displays as ? or a box or whatever.
