SMTP failure

I've had my mail working fine for a few weeks but over the last few days I can no longer "reply" to mails. I can compose and send fine and receiving is fine. When I reply to a mail I get the following error. Cannot send mail. The connection to the outgoing server "xxxxxxxxxxx" failed.
My mail account works fine off my laptop s the faults with the I Phone rather than the ISP.
Help appreciated !
Andy

Some things to investigate:
Since new mails are getting through, but replies are not, there may be a mismatch between your email account settings for the
1. What is your default sending account from the phone?
2. Is this default using a different server than the account that you are trying to reply from?
Look under -> Settings / Mail / Default Account
When you send a brand spanking new email from outside the Mail application, the default account will be used. When you send an email while 'inside' an account, the SMTP settings for that account wil be used instead.

But....the remote SMTP failure notification is just not there???? Do i need to set this?? HOW???
Thanks

Thanks for the reply...
Well, you can certainly put "copywarnpost"keyword
on
your tcp_local channel.
Which means by default, if remote SMTP serverfails
to accept the mail.....the messaging serverremains
silent about this failure...nobody will know...Not even remotely true. The message is re-queued,
and attemtped later. Later being defined by your
"backoff" settings, for as long as your "notices"
setting is for. If we're unsuccessful at that point,
a message to the originator is created, as one is, at
each step of the notices stuff.
>THAT IS WHAT I MEAN ...
the sender won't know immidiately (that his mail was requueued in the recipient mail server and not delivered immidiately).....
Particularly for Over quota mailboxes.....
I set the quotagraceperiod to zero ... so that the senders know immidiately ... what he has sent did not reach....
>>
You can also certainly let your users know thatwe
don't just "loose mail". Your log confirms thatthe
message was re-queued.
Does this mean the server will try to deliver the
message to remote SMTP after sometime as pernotices
keyword....No, you're confused. Notices sets how long we try,
and when we notify the user that his message didn't
go through. backoff is how often we retry.
Point noted...thanks
>>
>>
>>
>>
The error message indicates that there was aproblem
with the server that you were sending to, not
that
you have any problem with your server. Like, the
other server was simply down.Exactly ..i know remote smtp server is down......Iam
simulating the problem of production in my testenv
....I have stopped the remote SMTP on purpose....
I was just trying to understand about NOTIFICATONS
WHEN REMOTE SMTP IS DOWN......
THE SERVER REMAINS SILENT ....THAT IS MY
PROBLEM.......Your problem is that you don't quite understand the
"notices" keyword. . .
If we're still unable to send the message by the
first "notices" time interval, then we send a notice.
Until then, we retry, based on "backoff", silently. The problem is the server retries silently ....and that the first notices keyword --- should be set to zero ....so that the sender knows immidiately ....that his mails was not seen by recipient...
Can we set the first notices value to zero...!!
Thanks

• I keep getting this SMTP failure

• Total SMTP Failure; Diagnostic Help Requested

THE SHORT VERSION: As of about two days ago, all outgoing SMTP connections from my copy of Mail.app--whether sending via our own ISP's server or via third-party servers to which I have access--fail. It seems they simply time out, but I can't get more info. I could use suggestions for a diagnostic path, if not an outright fix.
THE LONGER VERSION: My copy of Mail has suddenly lost the ability to send mail via any SMTP server. Not our own ISP's; not the server associated with my personal domain; nothing. This is specific to my own computer--my partner's laptop can send mail just fine. It's also independent of WiFi network; whether I'm on my own or my neighbor's, it fails. I can ping the servers themselves with Network Utility, but I can't get Mail to make the hook-up.
I can watch this failure happen on Mail's "Connection Doctor" window. It takes a long time (at least a minute) for each attempt to fail, and it happens during the "Connecting to server..." phase. That's all I know. No error messages are recorded in the Console.
Can anybody give me any ideas on how to find out more about what's happening? Suggestions for fixing this are welcome as well, of course.
ONE FINAL THING, which may or may not be relevant: We're experiencing the slow death of our AirPort Extreme hub, so in our household we've become used to hopping back and forth between our own WiFi network and the neighbor's. The SMTP blackout happened on a day in which I was jumping on and off our home WiFi network all the dang time. Could the constant switching of network settings somehow have fried my SMTP preferences?
2x533 G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thanks, Ernie--
I've done as you suggested. In the process of doing so, I seem to have answered my own question.
The problem seems to have been using the particular neighbor's network. Incoming mail was okay, but connecting to the outgoing mail server just wasn't going through. Perhaps it was just too slow and timed out. Jumping on to other neighbors' networks eliminates the problem, but I was used to using the troublesome one, and hadn't bothered to try others.
Our own WiFi network obligingly came back up for a while this afternoon, too--it had been down since this morning. Perhaps it felt misunderstood, because it demonstrated that it was in fact willing to ship out mail whenever I asked it to. Not sure how I decided that it wasn't, but there it is. Like I said, we have to jump on and off our network all the dang time. I must have gotten confused somewhere along the line as to which network I'd been using.
Anyway, the problem is solved. A big part of it seems to have been that I jump to conclusions.

• NOKIA OVI YAHOO SMTP failures recently

I have two OVI email addresses and have used them for some time now. I have been trying with Mozilla Thunderbird and in the last few weeks I have been getting sporadic authentication errors when sending (SMTP) although receiving has always been fine. Prior to this starting, it has been fine so I know my settings are OK.
Now I have reverted to Outlook I am still getting authentication failures when sending every time on both OVI YAHOO email accounts.
I have tried a different computer and both Thunderbird and Outlook fail every time on both computers. Also tried, without success:-
Every type of authentication settings combination, always reverting to the correct ones.
Leaving it to AVAST to handle SSL
Turning the firewall on and off
However, it works fine on my N97 and of course in the browser interface
Has anyone else had this problem recently? There doesn't seem to be any way to contact OVI Yahoo for support on this.

Hi there Eaglewalkthroug
I owe you a massive vote of thanks for this and I am surprised that Nokia Support at "http://support.ovi.com/osc/en_GB/service/mail/faq/FA134976_en_US" can't seem to work it out themselves.
This has bugged me for ages now and finally you sorted it, and it's IMAP!!
Thanks a million

• Mobile Me SMTP failure - how to fix

This info is scattered around this forum, so thought I'd create a new topic.
My Mobile Me email on my 1st gen iPhone would not send even though it received just fine. I checked all the smtp settings and port 587 was correct, and the alternate smtp servers were ready to go, including the AT&T one for use when away from home. But no joy using WiFi at home, even though the same account works fine at home on my MacBook.
The first thing to check is whether the account address is [email protected] or [email protected] If the former, you should definitely do the following: delete the entire Mobile Me account from your phone and re-create it. It should then default to [email protected]
I did it easily in about 40 seconds and lost no contacts, calendars or mail, despite dire warnings to the contrary, and it sends just fine now over my home WiFi (via Comcast).
-dan

Thanks for your help, but I already did that and it did not all get removed as I said before.A .dll is missing. On the control panel if you right click mouse on MobileMe Icon, and try to Open, you get this message "AppleSyncPref.exe wasn't found because of missing .dll. So I go round and round and the message of previous note, goes on and on.

• Mountain Lion and smtp failure

I have installed Mountain Lion and can no longer send emails from my o2 email account. They arrive via the POP server fine, but won't send on the SMTP server. Anyone know of a fix for this?

Have you tried a different email client, Sparrow Lite is available free of charge in the App store. It may prove if it is Apples Mail that is faulty or something in the OS. Note the Lite version is Ad supported but that would not matter for testing.
I have not tried Sparrow, Apple Mail has always worked for me but it would be more information to give Apple on the feedback form http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Are there any error messages either in Mail or in the console logs?

• Catching of SMTP Failure in JDeveloper 11g in Email Service

Hi,
I am having a requirement to send Email using Jdeveloper.

Kindly help me in this ASAP.
Regards

This is overly complicated. you post the code of you command link?
should work without any java code by setting a property listener which the from value set to the value of the link and the to property to the of the input text.

• Outgoing SMTP failure

I have a Toshiba Satellite A105-S4384 that has for some reason lost its ability to send via SMTP.  I can receive mail but can't reply or generate a new email to send.  I use Thunderbird.  I did a total reinstall of the installation disks to no avail.  I ran the diagnostics that toshiba supplys and did get a message that the modem failed.
Can someone tell me what to do next.  I have the diagnostics file if it will help.
Many thanks, John

What ISP are you using, is it AOL? If so, are there more than one account setup for Thunderbird to handle? If you have multiple accounts then you have to assign a specific 'smtp' for Thunderbird to handle In/outgoing mails.
But since you can receive e-mails, that's unlikely the case and this can be the culprit....
Try this:
Open Thunderbird>Tools>Account Settings>Copies & Folders (under your account name, or each account name)
On the right pane: uncheck "Place a copy in"
You have to do this for all accounts to send mail.

• SMTP failure...pls help

Hi Experts,
Actually I wrote a procedure and sh file and sql file and used SMTP command to send out email when process finishes..
This works only when:
I run abc.sh ---> calls ----> abc.sql ----> calls this procedure.. --> This is working fine and i am getting email.
However I am getting ORA-29278: SMTP transient error: 421 Service not available
error when I run the procedure via Oracle SQL developer directly....
Why SMTP not working when i run the procedure directly...
Any ideas Please...

Apparently there are two different systems and the system running sqldeveloper has no access to the smtp server, or the smtp port is not opened to that system.
--> not an Oracle problem.
Also your question doesn't even has a version number and we are not sitting at your desk.

• ORA-29279: SMTP permanent error: 530 5.7.1 Client was not authenticated

Hi ,
We have mail alert system which sends mail to users upon issues in procedure during daily load and etc.
But few days ago we have database crash but unfortunately mail alert didnot get generated and the above error is desplayed.
The main error is
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified.
Will the SMTP server work during a database crash/shutdown or else the above ORA-12154 error has anything to do with SMTP failure.
Thanks in advance.

ORA-12154 ALWAYS only occurs on SQL Client & no SQL*Net packets ever leave client system
ORA-12154 NEVER involves the listener, the database itself or anything on the DB Server.
ORA-12154 occurs when client requests a connection to some DB server system using some connection string.
TNS-03505 is thrown by tnsping & is same error as ORA-12154 thrown by sqlplus or others.
The lookup operation fails because the name provided can NOT be resolved to any remote DB.
The analogous operation would be when you wanted to call somebody, but could not find their name in any phonebook.
The most frequent cause for the ORA-12154  error is when the connection alias can not be found in tnsnames.ora.
The lookup operation of the alias can be impacted by the contents of the sqlnet.ora file; specifically DOMAIN entry.

• Can't get mail to work. 127.0.0.1 refused

The server I had for mail died, so I am trying to get my companies mail over to the server we use for hosting our web sites. • ICloud e-mail on 10.4.11

Hello everyone
I am (still!) running OS X 10.4.11 on a G5 iMac and would like to be able to set up Mail to send and receive e-mail from my iCloud account as access to the web interface using TenFourFox is getting increasingly tricksy and slow.
I'm aware of various 'how-to' guides such as http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudmail2.html but I just can't get the setup to work on my iMac, using Mail 2.1.3
Setting up a new account, on the first screen I choose IMAP, then add the account description and then my full name and e-mail account (neither @mac.com nor @me.com makes a difference).
On the next screen I use imap.mail.me.com, then my username (@me.com) and password.  This connects OK.
On the next screen I use smtp.mail.me.com, check 'Use authentication', user name @me.com, and password.  I then get the message 'Trying to log into the SMTP servier smtp.mail.me.com has failed.  Please make sure the username and password are correct...' etc.
Any thoughts on how to resolve this would be welcome - thank you!

Thanks Roger - tried that just now but sadly no difference.
If I ignore the SMTP failure, I've discovered Mail sets up the account and I can receive e-mails, but not send them.  It's a bit frustrating, but I do have Mail set up using 10.8.5 on my work computer so can at least deal with e-mail that way.

• [VIA] Problem with Creative X-FI on KT6 Delta FI2SR

Hi all
I have a KT6 Delta FI2SR with 1GB PC3200 400MHz DDR, and an Athlon 3200XP+, running BIOS 5.7 (latest).
I recently bought and added a Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS soundcard, and I have an issue....
The card was installed, is on IRQ19 (no conflicts anywhere with sound), and on-board sound is disabled.
Randomly, on cold boot, I get told "NVRAM Update OK", and then I get NO SOUND!
It stays like that until I reboot and it "Updates" again, or I clear the NVRAM in BIOS.
LOTS of people on the Creative Forum have reported similar issues with ASUS Mobos, and nForce chipsets, but this is an MSI with VIA!
ALL (and I do mean ALL) device drivers are up to date....
Can someone @ MSI look into this? ASUS have resolved their issue with BIOS updates, but nothing for this board for a while!
I've tried mailing MSI support BUT [email protected] AND [email protected] get SMTP failures (no known username).

I would hope the PSU is fine - it's a 620 watt PSU which I bought when I installed a GeForce 6800GT
Both motherboard power connectors are connected up.  PSU has two outgoing rails, with 3 main Molex and 1 mini (floppy) adaptor on each rail.
In the machine we have :
1 x Asus V9999GT GeForce 6800GT AGP 8x card (with dual molex connectors)
1 x Creative X-FI Fatal1ty FPS PCI card
1 x Adaptec 29040UW SCSI controller PCI card
2 x 80GB Maxtor 7200RPM SATA HDD drives (as one RAID0 array)
1 x Creative Fatal1ty FPS front bay (powered - small connector)
1 x MSI Dual-Layer DVD+RW Drive
1 x HP Surestore 12/24 DDS3 DAT Drive
1 x Panasonic LS-120 HDD Floppy Drive
1 x IOMega ZIP 250 ATAPI Drive
Logitech cordless keyboard & mouse on PS2 connectors
COM1 has a trackball
COM2 is a signal cable for a Liebert Powersure UPS
LPT1 is disabled (I have a networked printer)
7 of 8 USB slots are currently in use : (Joystick, Bluetooth adaptor, Fuji 6900Z Camera, Primefilm 35mm film scanner (own power), HP Jornada 568 PDA (own power),  Logitech QuickCam Home webcam, Wacom Graphire Tablet)
CPU fan is powered and adjustable, and the case has 7 controllable fans.
There is a SCSI scanner (own power) and the 17" LCD monitor connected (on it's own power) as well, and thats it.
I've disabled the Case LED (which was also powered).
Obviously there are a couple of power splitters in there to supply power to the various internals

• Can't Stop Intense SPAM Attack

Hello,
As of the past day or two, I've started encountering so major SPAM attacks to one of our multiple servers. We have a mail server on the domain, but this one isn't it (as its only used for QTSS streaming and some web hosting).
Basically, I first noticed it when I got two seperate emails from postmasters saying to fix the problem, and then noticed "smtp" showing up on "top" continuously and draining the CPU. So far, I've tried turning the web server off and on, turning the mail server off and on, keeping the mail server on with SMTP with closed relay, and nothing has worked. Eventually, I had to set up a firewall to block port 25 incoming and outgoing which has seemed to solve the problem (but there are continuing entries related to MX records in the system.log every minute).
I noticed that before this started, there were tons of 404's lookin for formmail.cgi and some php mail client, and then since there's been no odd web traffic at all. I've also checked /tmp and /var/tmp, and nothing out of the ordinary either. Otherwise, this is what i've been seeing in system.log:
With firewall off:
Dec 31 03:35:35 xserve2 lmtpunix[15146]: warning: unable to post message for user: colin, mail is not enabled for this user
With firewall off and making the colin account:

Dec 31 03:36:22 xserve2 postfix/qmgr[13546]: warning: transport smtp failure -- see a previous warning/fatal/panic logfile record for the problem description
With firewall on:

Dec 31 14:06:51 xserve2 postfix/smtp[22534]: warning: malformed domain name in resource data of MX record for altavista.net:

Dec 31 14:07:03 xserve2 postfix/smtp[22232]: warning: malformed domain name in resource data of MX record for ayhoo.com:
If anyone could help, I'd most MOST grateful, as we do use the php mail command on one of our big sites hosted on that server and obviously that whole system is down right now...
----- EDIT -----
It seems as though the smtp is still coming up even with port 25 firewall on.
The firewall looks like its blocking a TON of packets, but the smtp is still utilizing over 80% of my CPU.

Hey MrHoffman,
Again, thanks for all the help with this... its very appreciated over here. It's a major university website as well, so last thing we want is to be blacklisted.
I had a look through ipfw.log just now and can see the incoming blocking from late last night through today... some sample lines:
Dec 30 23:38:38 xserve2 ipfw: 65534 Deny TCP 194.106.141.85:20782 204.194.30.246:25 in via en1
Dec 30 23:38:38 xserve2 ipfw: 65534 Deny TCP 62.41.48.171:42706 204.194.30.246:25 in via en1
Dec 30 23:38:38 xserve2 ipfw: 65534 Deny TCP 65.54.246.103:7820 204.194.30.246:25 in via en1
Dec 30 23:38:38 xserve2 ipfw: 65534 Deny TCP 85.31.177.235:55054 204.194.30.246:25 in via en1
Dec 30 23:38:38 xserve2 ipfw: 65534 Deny TCP 194.109.127.153:3302 204.194.30.246:25 in via en1
Dec 30 23:38:38 xserve2 ipfw: 65534 Deny TCP 129.15.3.86:34962 204.194.30.246:25 in via en1
Dec 30 23:38:38 xserve2 ipfw: 65534 Deny TCP 217.174.202.185:15703 204.194.30.246:25 in via en1
Now in addition to that, last night when incoming 25 was still open and then I locked it, all the ipfw denials were to port 25. Now... today, there are more ports as well during the big spikes of ipfw problems today.. here's a set:
25, 135 -139, 445, 1026, 6050, 33438, 49423-4
Needless to say, looking at all of the entires, is that the IPs are all over the map (and definitely not on our 204.194.30.x or 128.2.103.x) so it does indeed look like it's coming from the outside. The good news is that right now, all smtp processes and outgoing problems have stopped completely, and the only thing happening is this once in a while spike of incoming packets like the logs above. It starts out of nowhere, keeps going for around 15-45 min, and then just stops, but at least nothing's coming in. For the time being just in case, i've locked off port 25 outgoing as well, since I did conclude that when this started happening, I discovered that the all the outgoing spam was coming out of postfix, given the millions (yes millions) of emails in que in /var/spool/postfix. But as of now looking at the network stats using cacti and some other methods, we've found that the past few days, our outgoing bandwidth was between 200Kb/s to 2Mb/s sustained during the ordeal, but it's now down to under 20Kb/s patches, mainly from me doing admining.
As of right now, SMTP incoming is unchecked and authentication required is set in the mail pane in server admin, and the "accept SMTP relays from only..." checkbox is checked with only 127.0.0.1/32 listed, but this doesn't seem to help at all the second I open up incoming port 25... so I would think that the relay is closed, but it just doesn't seem to help... unless I'm missing something?
With that said, I'd totally be for doing a basic firewall!
I use one here at home (a netgear FVS114), although I have cable internet here, and wasn't sure if I would be able to just use the same kind of router-esque firewall like that at school and just run the LAN network port into the WAN and connect the LAN ports to our server room switch?
Meanwhile, I did get computing services involved mid afternoon, and someone's actually there today and the ball seems to be rolling. I have them cc'd on the board post so hopefully they'll gain some insight from all the great help on here so far.
Thanks again!
