Securely Configure HT to Accept E-mails from non-Exchange SMTP Gateway

We have setup a new Exchange 2010 environment. We are not using Edge Transport servers as SMTP gateway, rather using a hosting service named ProopPoint. The ProofPoint gateway accepts e-mail for our SMTP domain
and after performing anti-spam etc. functions, is supposed to send e-mail to internal Hub Transport servers in our domain. We need to allow the ProofPoint servers to send e-mail to our HT servers (HT servers should accept connections from ProofPoint servers).
I know that I can go to the “Default <Sever_Name>” receive connector on each HT and on the
Permissions Group tab check the “Anonymous Users” to allow ProofPoint servers to be able to submit e-mails to HTs but that won’t be a good idea as (I think) this would make my HT as “OPEN RELAY” (pls. correct me if I’m wrong)
as that Default connector is configured by default to listen from any IP addresses. So want to know:
If this is the only way I could achieve this?
If I configure a separate “Receive Connector” on my HT servers and configure only IP Addresses of the ProofPoint to be able to submit e-mails to HT – Will this work?
Also, is there a way I can restrict user(s) in Exchange 2010 to send only 30 messages per minute?
Any ideas and/or supported documents would be highly appreciated….

When I create a new Receive connector, I have to specify the type "Intended Use" of the connector in terms of Internal/Custom/Internet etc.. What option do I need to select here?
If I select Internet, I do not get any window to put Remote IP Address and if I just go with default configuration in the connector creation, it gives me the following error:

The values that you specified for the Bindings and RemoteIPRanges parameters conflict with the settings on Receive connector "<Server_Name)\Default". A Receive connector must have a unique combination of a local IP address, port bindings, and remote IP address
ranges. Change at least one of these values.

Using Exchange 2010 Edge server as an SMTP gateway without other roles

I am looking to implement a simple SMTP gateway solution for a few applications to relay emails and hence am not looking at a full fledged Exchange deployment. As SMTP component is no longer available in Windows Server 2012, I would like to know if the Exchange
2010 Edge role can function as a simple SMTP gateway solution without having the other roles of Exchange 2010 deployed like the CAS, Hub and Mailbox ?
My requirements from this SMTP gateway solution would be the ability to append disclaimers, relay restrictions based on IP addresses and sender email addresses, and provide both authenticated and unauthenticated relay access.
Any inputs would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I decided to test the scenario - just for fun, and it seems to work. A strange setup :-)
So you will have to prepare your schema and AD - and create an Exchange organisation.
Then you will have to assign the receive connector(s) AD permission to relay outside the organisation - by default it can only relay internal, but since your mailsystem is "outside" seen from Exchange - you'll need to do that.
Is your AD domain the same as your SMTP namespace? Because then you have to make it external relay after you have removed it from the e-mail address policy :-)

Exchange 2013 mail contact in Active Directory missing SMTP email address but has a primary email address

Outlook 2010 Distribution Group contact member "Al" is not showing an email address. In Active Directory "Al" is showing an email address but it's not a SMTP email address that is created when you add a new Mail contact using EAC.
When the DG owner sends out an email using DG email account, the mail bounces back as undeliverable.
Exchange Admin Center is not showing the member. The only way to fix the member is by deleting the contact. Re-add contact in EAC then add to Distribution Group. We have over 30 DGs that are missing the SMTP email addresses.
Can a Powershell command fix this issue or is there a sync issue between AD and Exchange?

From your description, the contact you specified should be contact not mail contact. Contact and mail contact are two different things. If you create a contact in ADUC, you need to mail-enable it and then set the primary SMTP address for it.

The "Gateway" address would be the Private (LAN-side) IP address of your Internet router. If you are using an AirPort base station for that router, the default gateway IP address would be: 10.0.1.1

I need to get and alter the local PC's IP address and Gateway address.
I know how to get the IP address using InetAddress, but I have a few questions.
1) Is is possible in Java to change the local PC's IP address?
2) Is it possible and if so how do I obtain the local PC's Gateway IP address
3) Is there a way of showing all the Network adapters within a PC?
This will be used on Windows XP operating system if ths makes any difference.

Time Capsule, DHCP not providing correct gateway address

I have gone back and forth between my AP Extreme and Time Capsule and have determined that Time Capsule is not providing the proper gateway address to my wireless clients. Instead of providing the correct gw address it provides the address I assigned the base station. This is contrary to my Airport Extreme which provides the proper gw address to my wireless clients. Sounds like a bug in the DHCP base station software. Any thoughts?

I have a very similar problem. I originally had cable broadband and a Airport Extreme (AE) upgraded to 7.3.1 all worked fine. The AE was being used as a DHCP server to distribute the dynamic IP address provided by the ISP. I then replaced the AE for a Time Capsule (TC) and installed a new 802.11n Airport Express. I upgraded the TC and AExpress to 7.3.1. The TC was setup identically to the now replaced (disconnected and switched off) AE.
Unfortunately the TC failed to work as a DHCP server. It did not recognize the ISP provided dynamic IP address and replaced it with an 'Invalid' IP address which of course meant no internet access. I then replaced the TC with the original AE (identically set up) and all worked fine, including the AExpress.
While I wait for Apple to fix the TC firmware I am running the AE as the DHCP Server and the TC as a wireless bridge to the AExpress. Time Machine is recognizing Time Capsule and backups from two macs are working fine.

HH3 Gateway Address Problem

I have just had Infinity installed and have an issue with the BT homehub3.
The hub has an IP 192.168.1.254 however when it assigns an IP address to either my desktop or laptop using DHCP it assigns the gateway address as 192.168.1.1 and consequently I can’t get an internet connection. If I set the IP and gateway manually it works fine.
Any ideas as to why it isn’t setting the correct gateway?

Does it work if you set the IP address manually e.g
IP Address          192.168.1.50
Subnet Mask       255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.1.254
DNS                   192.168.1.254
There is no advantage in using DHCP, unless your computer is used on other networks. Static addressing is quicker and more reliable.
If you need to use DHCP, then make sure the subnet mask is set to 255.255.255.0
There are a couple of DHCP pools within the home hub, one is reserved for the BT Openzone/FON VLAN connection.

Malformed mime file and Symantec AV SMTP Gateway

We are running 2 versions of JES at the moment, 2003Q4 and 2004Q2, both fully patched. We have just discovered that any messages with attachments that are directed through our AV ASPAM gateway from these systems are dropped with the following error.
Scan Status: 56 - Malformed MIME file
The AV product is Symantec AV for SMTP Gateways 3.1.2.35
On further examination of the AV logs it appears that e-mail from other institutions also running iMS
are also being dropped.
The response from Symantec is as follows
"This error indicates that the scanned email message did not conform to the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) standards as set forth in RFC 2045 - RFC 2049. Strict adherence to this standard prevents incoming email with virus payloads encapsulated within malformed MIME headers and form."

I have also discovered that similar problems are being encountered by a user trying to send HTML messages via Sun Java Mail.
So, has anybody seen this beforeand know of a fix? It is a rather frustrating problem.

We are using Symantec AV SMTP Gateway with Messaging Server 6.1 and are not experiencing the problems you mention, though we did see a few such issues with an older rev (we're currently using 4.0.0.59). Some of the fixes Symantec lists with ver 3.1.7 are:
# Some multipart MIME messages with nonstandard boundary markers incorrectly parsed
# Some multipart MIME messages with numerous plain text attachments not parsed correctly
# Some multipart MIME messages containing two terminating boundary markers for the primary (outer) boundary generate a false positive malformed mime error
You might consider upgrading your AV SMTP Gateway to see if this fixes the problem.

Java mail(fetch default SMTP server address)

I am writting a code to send an email using Java Mail API.
I have manged what I wanted(send a mail with an attachment)
But in my code I have hard coded the SMTP server address,that is what I dont want to do .Is there anything in java which can fetch the default SMTP server address ?

Outlook Email Receiving only with Outgoing SMTP IP address instead of domain URL

I am new in domain system, i set up domain controller myself at my office, every thing was working fine, but after 3 or 4 days outlook was unable
to receive email on client machines. the only way i find was to enter ip address of my domain (i have purchased and hosted from third party) in outgoing SMTP Server address. emails are receiving well without ip but only error is at receiving.
i dont know where i am wrong. this is annoying too much.

According to your description, Outlook on client machines couldn’t receive emails until entered IP address of the Outgoing SMTP server? What about sending emails, are there any issues?
In addition, have you tried to run NSlookup.exe in command prompt as Sean suggested?

RSV4000 DHCP Gateway address problem

I have an RSV4000 which I'm using as a gateway. I changed the default 192.168.1.0/24 network to 10.255.255.0/24 and configured the DHCP address pool to use 64 host addresses starting at 10.255.255.64
Every so often users on VLAN 1 get a gateway IP address of 192.168.1.1 even though they received a DHCP address of 10.255.255.64, 65, 66, etc.
I ran a packet capture and the RSV4000 is actually giving out the wrong gateway address.
I have to power cycle the RSV4000 and it works until some random point in time, then starts giving out the wrong gateway address again.
Is Cisco going to fix this?
I'm running version 1.3.2.0 and I do not have the V4 model so I can't run v2.0.0.3

Hey mdoldan,
Were you the one that upgraded the firmware of 1.3.2.0 on the router or did you receive it like that.
This is a very odd case, where it is giving out ip address on the default lan even though you changed it.
Have you tried reflashing the firmware, factory resetting the router and reloading the configurations back to it.
I would try that and see if the problem persist.

Hey Gerry -
To get the default gateway, you'll want to use the Win32 IP Helper API. Unfortunately, this portion of the Win32 API is only available to users of the Full LabWindows/CVI package.
To retrive IPV4 information about your network adapters, you can use the function GetAdaptersInfo. If you need IPV6 information, you'll need to use GetAdaptersAddresses. I wrote a quick example of using GetAdaptersInfo and attached it, you can see the output below:

Get IPv6 gateway address on Windows XP

Hi guys,
Windows XP supports IPv6, but if I want to get the IPv6 gateway address linked to an adapter I've a big problem:
GetAdaptersInfo can get the gateway address but works only with IPv4
GetAdaptersAddresses works with IPv6 and can get the gateway address, but the related parameter FirstGatewayAddress of its structure ip_adapter_addresses was added only on Windows Vista and later
Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration WMI class can retrieve IPV6 gateway address but it is available only from Vista
What can I do?

No simple way, basically, on XP+ use GetAdaptersAddresses, it adds ipv6.
XP has been end of support by MS, so maybe upgrading OS is a better way to promote things forward.
