SMTP in iFS question

I installed iFS 1.1 on Oracle 8.1.7. Setup the SMTP server on the default port. Did NOT setup IMAP (port conflict). If I understand correctly, this should allow inbound mail to be stored into iFS (and maybe even forwarded?), but would not allow the iFS folder to be used by a mail client. How do I actually try this? How do I send a mail message to the SCOTT user?

You might try using 'mail' on UNIX to generate a message to a user account in Oracle iFS via SendMail.

  • Smtp sender restrictions question

I have the following in my main.cf file for sender restrictions. permitsasl_authenticated,permit_mynetworks,rejectn onfqdnsender, permit
Seems pretty standard, but I have had some students in my district send emails to teachers as [email protected] Now the first thing I am going to do is take the building ip ranges out of the mynetworks and require sasl on all email clients. I think this will stop this from happening.
My question is can a student send an email as a bogus user to someone from mydomain if they don't have some way of sasl authentication? I remember in the past that when my teachers were at home and they would send emails they could send to each other mydomain to mydomain but not outside, mydomain to yahoo.com for example.
So they were not using sasl or mynetworks because they were using their home ip. If that would still be allowed, what can I do.
    Thanks for any clarifications!

      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I was a little confused by your question, so this may
sound like more of a "buck-shot" approach to your
problem than you would like. I apologize if this
doesn't answer your question directly. However, if I
were you, I would implement Pterobyte's "Frontline
spam defense for Mac OS X Server" located at
    http://osx.topicdesk.com/downloads
I have enabled this, it is excellent.
In this PDF file, Pterobyte provides a set of
restrictions for main.cf that optimizes Postfix's
abilities to deal with unwanted mail up-front before
    it reaches your content filter.
Concerning your question specifically, are you saying
that a student can send mail using your mail server
without authenticating as long as they are sending to
another user on the server and claiming to have an
email address originating from your TLD?
I believe the student is using terminal or something similar on some of our less restricted osx laptops, he is then sending emails to users in my domain. If I remove the ip range from the building he is in, will it stop him from sending emails? He is making up a return address like [email protected] and sending to [email protected] He might even be using php, but I only want email to go to any user local or not, from the district, if they have set my server requires authentication in an email client.
Will removing the ip be enough to stop this?
    Thanks!

  • Dictamus smtp mail server question - help!

I'm just wondering if anyone else is having trouble using Dictamus on their iphone for sending dictations via email.
I recently put OS 5 on my iphone and I have upgraded to Lion on my imac. I recorded a dictation the other day on my phone and I tell it to send and it looks like it does but no one is getting my dictations in their email. I have tried troubleshooting and checked my SMTP settings and they seem to be correct.
I used to be able to send dictations no problem before I uprgraded - is anyone else having this problem of their emails not being sent?
I use a me.com account and would like to use that to send the emails. I have the smtp sever set to smtp.me.com and I have also tried smtp.mail.me.com and still my emails will not go thru.
Any suggestions or help is much appreciated.

We have been getting reports from quite a few MobileMe customers who cannot send mails from Dictamus. According to our investigations, Dictamus does send those mails correctly, and the me.com SMTP server acknowledges having accepted them for delivery. This is as far as anyone can track outgoing e-mail over SMTP, so Dictamus flags the respective dictation as "shared successfully". The problem is that after that initial acknowledgement, MobileMe silently discards some Dictamus mails (not all) without notification to either sender or recipient. This can happen if either recipient or sender are on MobileMe, so sending from a MobileMe address to another mail provider is subject to this issue as well as sending from another provider to MobileMe. Therefore, we currently recommend against using MobileMe accounts for sending mails from Dictamus. We are unaware of similar problems with any of the other large e-mail providers.

  • Non-SMTP Session Start Question

I'm getting hundreds of triggers on signature 5748 Non-SMTP Session Start. When I put a block host on this signature I stop getting e-mail. Should this be considered normal traffic.

    Hi,
Regarding signature 5748 firing SMTP session initiation with something other than HELO or EHLO. See below for MySDN link on this
    signature
    http://tools.cisco.com/MySDN/Intelligence/viewSignature.x?signatureId=5748&signatureSubId=0
I'm assuming subsig 0. Is this true?
This is likely a type of reconnaissance attack to see if you are running
an smtp service at this IP address and what type and version number of
smtp software you're running (i.e., Sendmail, Postfix, Microsoft
Exchange, etc.) as they'll get the smtp banner after their initial
    connect.
When you see the signature alert, who's the attacker?
You can turn on 'produce verbose alert' to see more information.
    Thank you.

  • IPhone wont send email from a certain mail account

I know the settings are right, but the iPhone wont send mail from one of my mail accounts (hosted by the company i work for, which offers mail hosting as a service, and has hundreds of other iPhone users with the same account settings.)
The progress bar that indicates "sending" zips by suspiciously quickly when I hit Send, but there is no audio confirmation. Then the email is gone - its not in my Sent Items folder, and its not in the Drafts folder and its not in my broom closet.
From what I understand, if one SMTP server isn't available, it should default to the AT&T SMTP server, but it apparently doesn't even get that far, because the phone must think it's sent the message, or it would end up in the Drafts folder (or Outbox, I can't recall), which is what I would normally experience if I had no service at the time I was sending the message. I have two other accounts that work normally on the iPhone. Nothing has been recently changed with the SMTP server in question, which works fine with all my other devices.
    I've tried:
    • deleting the account and re-adding it manually (four times)
    • deleting the account and syncing it with my computer (three times)
    • hard resetting the iPhone
    • ensuring that the primary SMTP server for this account is, in fact, switched to "On" in Settings->Mail, Contacts, and Calendars, <mail account>-->SMTP (which brings me to another question: how do I edit this list? Is it automatically populated by the accounts in my Mail app?

    Ideas?
    Email Account type: IMAP
    Authentication type: MD5 with SSL
    Port: 587
    8GB 3G iPhone, Software version 2.2.1

    One thing that might help.
If your primary server is hosted by your company, double check the outgoing settings.
    Host Name:
    Use SSL:
    Authentication:
    Server Port:
If it zips through your primary server without effect, try turning the primary server off and one of the secondary on.
If connected to Edge or 3G, you can use ATT's SMTP server.
If issue still persists, then set up a gmail or yahoo account to test with.
    Both are free email services.
If still fails, then general troubleshooting might help.
Here are a couple of articles from the apple support website that might help out.

  • DMZ static nat!

    Hi Experts,
I believe this everyone is doing OK and getting along with your are doing? I have this funny scenario that happened on ASA 8.4 I configured recently for DMZ static nat. See the topology attached.
I did configure the inside with a PAT
    object network INSIDE
       subnet 192.168.200.0 255.255.255.0
       nat (inside,outside) dynamic interface
That is working perfectly for inside to outside, So i have this server on the dmz, some edge mail server for the client that is meant for the outside world to reach. Sure enough I was happy that with the ASA 8.4 software that doing DMZ static nat I don't have to do with ACL to allow access anymore I mean I thought that has been depricated on the 8.3 and higher release.
I went on configuring the DMZ static nat like this
    object network DMZ_MAILEDGE_SERVER
    host 172.16.1.2
    object network DMZ_GLOBAL
    host 1.1.1.2
    object network DMZ_MAILEDGE_SERVER
    nat (dmz,any) static DMZ_GLOBAL
I was happy that finally i get to feel what the new dmz config on 8.4 should feel like.....I tried pinging my dmz server from outside, no joys at all. Did all i could to do even had to cross check the internet for config samples, everything looked good. Still no joys.
Then i though of creating an access list to permit ip from the OUTSIDE interface to the DMZ, like so,
access-list outside_access_in extended permit ip any object DMZ_MAILEDGE_SERVER
Then did my pings started going through for me to reach the server.
I don't know it feels all weird to me, since i was expecting configs 1 and 2 to get things going for me on software 8.4 not until i had to add config 3.
Please someone should tell me I am getting it all wrong and let me know what i did wrongly!
    Thanks
    Teddy
OK i know the first part of the situation is solved and I'm grateful to Jouni who elaborated me on it. But I have yet another pending situation that I could use a help here and really wouldn't mind been told this is where i got it all wrong.
So finally I could reach the Server on the DMZ from outside via the static nat. Yay!!! But I have some services that needs to be reached on the mailserver on the DMZ side of the network.
    Services like:
      dns 53, 193
      smtp 25
My question is, do i place the access list to permit these service from outside to dmz like this below ?
access-list outside_access_in extended permit udp any object DMZ_MAILEDGE_SERVER eq dnsix
access-list outside_access_in extended permit udp any object DMZ_MAILEDGE_SERVER eq domain
access-list outside_access_in extended permit tcp any object DMZ_MAILEDGE_SERVER eq smtp
                                                                      OR THIS
access-list outside_access_dmz extended permit udp any eq dnsix object DMZ_MAILEDGE_SERVER eq dnsix
access-list outside_access_dmz extended permit udp any eq domain object DMZ_MAILEDGE_SERVER eq domain
access-list outside_access_dmz extended permit tcp any eq smtp object DMZ_MAILEDGE_SERVER eq smtp
Which direction would be more appropriate to go via?
Also from the front end mail server, If i try to ping the internet say a domain name like www.yahoo.com, it would only resolve the name but the ping are not going thru.
Thanks for your advice in advance.
I say this not to undermine anybody's help, Jouni please if you see this I would also appreciate your contribution too!
    Cheers!

    Hi,
The NAT configurations seem just fine but I would configure them the Static NAT a bit differently (doesnt mean you have to though)
What I would do is simply state the public IP address in the NAT configuration rather than configure "object network" for the public IP address too
    Your configuration is
    object network DMZ_MAILEDGE_SERVER
    host 172.16.1.2
    object network DMZ_GLOBAL
    host 1.1.1.2
    object network DMZ_MAILEDGE_SERVER
    nat (dmz,any) static DMZ_GLOBAL
    My version would be
    object network DMZ_MAILEDGE_SERVER
    host 172.16.1.2
    nat (dmz,any) static 1.1.1.2
The simple reason for me would be keeping the "object network" amount at minimum and the fact that we dont need to reference the public IP address in any ACL configurations usually.
What you originally saw happening with the configurations 1 and 2 configured is to be expected. You will always need the configuration 3 which is the ACL to allow the traffic from the "outside".
If the "outside" interface doesnt have any ACL configured then it relies on the "security-level" alone which should be "0". This usually means that no traffic can enter from "outside" to any other interface on the ASA because all the other interfaces are above "security-level 0" and traffic is only allowed from HIGHER -> LOWER when there is NO ACLs. So the natural step to allow this traffic is to configure ACL with the appropriate rules and attach it to the "outside" interface.
    Hope this helps

  • Sending emails out in CRM

    Dear experts:
How to send email from CRM system to outside using ABAP code/FM?
I found CRM_ERMS_MAIL_SEND but couldn't make it working.
    Thanks, Dave

    Hi Stephen.
Thanks for your reply once again and the information was very usefull. But my problem is still not resolved. let me explain the scenario.
When i send an email with an external id like gmail or yahoo id the mail is reaching outlook SENT FOLDER but not sending to any of the reciepts of gmail or yahoo. And i dont see any trace on microsoft exchange server also. only thing what i see is that the mail in the sent folder of outlook. This is happening without even configuring the SMTP.
My question is how the emails will be sent to outside world from CRM through outlook outbox and then outside world like gmail and yahoo accounts.
Any help on this is much appriciated.

  • SCOT configuration for internal & external email system in EP.

    Hi,
I want to add SCOT configuration for internal & external email system in  SAP EP 7.0  ?
What all steps I need to do ? any good documents on this ?

    Hi Haider,
I have read the link you have given me to configure SCOT. I have 3  doubt plzz clarify.
    Doubt No. 1:
In that link its mentioned that I have to add 2  profile parameter in the transaction RZ10 namely icm/server_port_<>*  and is/SMTP/virt_host_<>*
My question is Can I put any value which i like in place of * like can I add either icm/server_port_2  OR  icm/server_port_3 OR icm/server_port_4  in icm parameter AND ALSO
Can I put any value which i like in place of * in is/SMTP/virt parameter like can I add either is/SMTP/virt_host_0  OR  is/SMTP/virt_host_1  OR is/SMTP/virt_host_2 .
    Doubt No. 2:
What port value I have to put in the profile parameter    icm/server_port_2  in RZ10.  Can I put any port value ? and automatically that port will work? say suppose I addded this profile parameter in RZ10
icm/server_port_2 = PROT=SMTP,PORT=25000,TIMEOUT=180          so automatically 25000 port will work ? or will it give error?
    Doubt No. 3:
When I go to SMICM transaction and go to services , I get the following:
No.  Log         Service name/port     Host name           Keep Alive    Proc TimeOut   Active
    1     HTTP               8000                  epv.sopm.com           30                     60               Yes
    2     SMTP               0                       epv.sopm.com            30                    60                Yes
    3     HTTPS             8001                 epv.sopm.com            30                    180               Yes
This means that HTTP port is 8000,   HTTPS port is 8001. My question is why in SMTP its showing 0, why no port is shown?
I have not added any profile parameter like  icm/server_port_2 = PROT=SMTP,PORT=25000,TIMEOUT=180     for SMTP in RZ10 as of now.
Is this the reason for this ?

    Hi,
If you are allowing traffic from the Internet then you will be using the ACL that is attached to the "outside" interface in the direction "in"
So I would presume in your case the ACL to use would be this
access-list outside_access_in extended permit udp any object DMZ_MAILEDGE_SERVER eq dnsix
access-list outside_access_in extended permit udp any object DMZ_MAILEDGE_SERVER eq domain
access-list outside_access_in extended permit tcp any object DMZ_MAILEDGE_SERVER eq smtp
To confirm we could use "show run access-group" command and check its output to make sure we are using the correct ACL.
I would imagine you have atleast the following in the output
    access-group outside_access_in in interface outside
If you cant ICMP from the DMZ server to the Internet then I would suggest testing it with "packet-tracer" command
    packet-tracer input dmz icmp 172.16.1.2 8 0 8.8.8.8
Also the very basic configurations to add if not yet added would be
    policy-map global_policy
    class inspection_default
      inspect icmp error
      inspect icmp
Enabling the ICMP Inspection allows the ASA to allow the ICMP Echo reply to get back from the Internet through the ASA to the host that originally sent the ICMP Echo message.
If we cant solve the problem with the above or get enough information with the "packet-tracer" command we might need to have a look at the configurations.

    1.
    is/SMTP/virt_host_<*> = <host>:<port>,<port>,...;
This parameter defines a virtual mail host for receiving mails. If all incoming mails (including status notifications) are to be received and processed by one single client of the SAP system, this parameter is not required. In this instance, is/SMTP/virt_host_0 = :; is used by default. If multiple clients are to be used as recipients, a virtual host has to be created for each of these clients. <host> describes the name of the host to which the incoming mails are addressed. You can enter * here if the mails are to be sent independently of the host being addressed. <port> describes the number of the port to which the incoming mails are addressed.
Do you plan to use incoming mail to SAP?
If so set this parameter for each client
If you plan to receive email for one client then you dont need to set this parameter.
Yes. You can specify any name.
The parameters must have the following syntax:
    is/HTTP/virt_host_n = <Host_1>:<Service_11>, .. <Service_1n>
                           <Host_2>:<Service_21>, .. <Service_2m>
<Host_x> and <Service_yz> may contain the wildcards '*' and
'*' can be used to represent any substring, '?' any
    character.
    2. You can enter any free port available.Generally higher the port number should be free(25000 should be a free port)
    3. SMTP port will be asigned port 0 if you dont specify the parameter for SMTP.
Yes. Thats the reason for it.
        But it still works.

  • Strategies for webmail file upload

I am writing a webmail application using javamail. In order to be able to attach files to outgoing messages, I will have to allow the user to upload the files to the server. I hope to create a rather generic application that will work with various types of mail installations on various platforms (win, unix) all using, of course SMTP.
My question is this - where should I (temporarily) put the uploaded files? A temp directory that I create inside my web application directory hierarchy? The user's home directory? What if the webapp can't write to the user's home directory, or, perhaps there isn't one to start with.
I would appreciate any advice you might have.
    Thanks!

We have done similar work. The ideal way to do it is to create a temp area first where you can do all your scratch pad activity. Once you have done that, create subdirectories under it for each user. (You can even use his mailbox area if you are following the maildir technique.) Then for each compose request create a temp directory for that user under his user directory as created above. This temp dir is required because, the user can have two or more 'compose mail' windows opened, by opening it on a new browser window each time.
