SMB not working from outside the local network
Hi guys..
I've set up a storage server so that users can log in remotely and access their files. I have two connections I want to use, AFP and SMB. The AFP connections work great. No matter where our mac users are, they can log in through the net and get to their shares.
With SMB, I'm currently having a nightmare! I can't log in from other internet connections. I've checked and double checked routers, ports, etc. I have even turned everything (in terms of firewalls) off for testing. Still nothing with SMB. BUT - If I connect to the same machine with smb://127.0.0.1/ I can log in fine. If I try to connect with smb://<server ip address> then it still doesn't work.
I either get one of these 2 messages:
Data could not be read or written.
Username and Password are incorrect (even though I havn't supplied a username or password yet!)
Any help will be golden! Thanks a lot!
-MelThanks a lot for the feedback.. Turns out the connection i'm testing it on (Virgin Media) does block SMB (port 445). Before I look into VPN, is it possible to change the port that SMB is operating on?
Is it easy to log in with VPN through WindowsXP? Can I send a similar string like smb:user:password@server to gain access to a VPN share through windows? Even through cmd will be fine as I intend on writing a program that can do that. I just need to know if it's possible. As I said, forgive my stupidity, I've never setup VPN before.. I think it's the only thing I havn't really dabbled in yet..
Thanks!

is it possible to access my TimeCapsule from outside my local network via internet? If so what is the best app that can help me?
iCloud can do it..
http://www.apple.com/au/support/icloud/back-to-my-mac/
You need Lion and latest firmware on the TC..
Were you hoping to use the ipad/iphone?? That maybe possible but I am not sure how.
You cannot use windows without opening SMB to some strange port and this is going to mess with security.. you also need a static ip address from your ISP.. most private net users do not have this.
You can do it via vpn.. you will need to buy a vpn router and bridge the TC to it.
Just google remote access time capsule.. there are a zillion posts about it. -
Which ports do I open so QT Broadcast is seen from outside a local network?
I need some help with proper port settings using QT Broadcaster Version 1.5 (113) from mac to mac (running X.4.5 on all systems). I am able to send a Live QT Broadcast to my local network no problem but the broadcast is not seen from outside of my own local Network.
I’m assuming I must first address port settings on my cable modem and / or a Belkin gateway 4 port router.
The Broadcast works fine on all 4 of my macs connected via ethernet to a Belkin 4 port router which in turn is connected to a Toshiba PCX2500 cable modem.
I’m guessing the Toshiba modem is the problem and not the Belkin router. I say this because when I remove the router completely my Broadcast is still not seen by anyone from the outside. This leads me to believe that the cable modem may be the culprit. But then again I’m at a loss to know which ports to open up so others on the internet can also view my broadcast. Please note I do not wish to broadcast to more than one person at a time. Hence no need for QTSS or DSS.
To the best of my knowledge QT Broadcaster in itself should suffice from one mac to another w/o the need for a server. Is this correct? If not, I do have Darwin loaded to another separate mac system in the event I must first use it to reflect this braodcast.
Any help would be sincerely appreciated & please pardon my second post on the same subject / QT Broadcaster which I have slighly reworded in hope of getting some help.

Mac os x server profilemanager is not available outside the local network
Hi,
I have some trouble using the profilemanager. Planed is to install the server for configuring and supporting our iPhone user
Its a mac mini with OS X Server installed. I've just activated the Websites, OpenDirectory and Profilemanager service. I added the Server to our AD and I'am able to choose the User to allow them to log on to the profilmanager. No problems so far.
But then I added a port forwarding to our firewall with this ports -> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5302?viewlocale=de_DE to the server.
Then I logged on to a external client pc and opened the url forwarded to our ip. The first website with the server logo I got. But if i try to open a subfolder like /profilemanager I get only a white screen without any content. Just a title "Admin" is shown in the browser tab.
Then I tried it with a local client. This client located in the same IP range can open the subfolders without any problems.
Whats the problem here? Just a parameter in the server config that tells him to deny connections from external?
MarcelDid you set up your ftp clients outside your LAN to use passive FTP.
Active FTP uses a control channel on port 21 and a data channel which is on a non predictive port.
This does not work behind a NAT Router.

How to screen share outside the local network
I'd like to screen share and be able to make changes to a family iMac that resides in another country. Is this possible with any Apple software or must I go somewhere else for this kind of functionality?
TeamViewer should get the job done for you just fine. I'm currently using it across my iMac, MacBook, and iPad. Because it has to relay the connection over the internet it can be a little sluggish at times. Hope it helps.

dfr aldossaryWow, Karan Taneja, you've just embarrassed yourself on a worldwide support forum. Not only is your post ridiculous and completely inappropriate for a technical support forum, but it also shows your ignorance as to whom you think the audience is. Apple is not here. It's users, like you.
If you would have spent half the time actually reading the Terms of Use of this forum that YOU agreed to by signing up to post, as you did composing that usesless, inappropriate post, you (and the rest of us on this forum) would have been much better off. -
Good time.
I do not accept messages from 17 hours to 23 11/09/12 12/09/12 hours of the year.
Go through the iCloud in the mail, I also could not in the period.
I sent a few reports of problems to iCloud.
Now everything is restored. Thank you.
I use several devices: PC Win 7 and iPad OS 5.1.
The problem stalknulsya on both devices.
However, during the above period I have no messages.
Please let that happen. Is it possible to recover lost messages?
Thank youHi finecut,
I believe this Mac Mail Help info may help:
Backing up your mail
You can back up your mailboxes to a CD or another disk. To do this, you can either copy the Mail folder in your Library folder or create an mbox file, a common format for storing mail messages.
▪ To save the contents of all your mailboxes, hold down the Option key and drag the Mail folder to your desktop or to another disk. The Mail folder is in the Library folder in your home folder (~/Library/Mail).
Copying the Mail folder only backs up mail from POP accounts, or mail from an IMAP account that you've copied to On My Mac. When you are ready to restore the Mail folder, choose File > Import Mailboxes, select Mail for Mac OS X, and locate the Mail folder.
▪ To create an mbox copy of a mailbox, drag the mailbox from the mailbox list to your desktop.
▪ To create an mbox file with just some of your messages, select the messages, then choose File > Save As. In the Format pop-up menu, choose Raw Message Source, then enter a name and save the file.
You can copy mbox files to CDs or to other disks. When you want to restore your mail, choose File > Import Mailboxes, select "Standard mbox files," and locate the files.
hope that helps,

Calling Options Team from outside the UK
I am away on business and I need to call BT Options Team urgently due to a flood in my office back home. All numbers are 0800 numbers or go through to call waiting numbers with no idea how long it will take to get through. Having waited 45 minutes listening to the 'in a queue message' I had to hang up. Anyone know the correct number to call from outside the UK and how one can get through or email the team since there appears to be no one there.
Hi daylight,
Welcome to the forum.
The Customer Options Team deals with cancellations so I'm not too sure how they can help if your premises are flooded, the Faults team might be a better team to speak to?
I'll PM you their number (when calling from overseas) though if your account is a BT Business account the number will be different so I'll PM both.
For future reference the BT Business Forum is at http://btb.lithium.com/t5/Forums/ct-p/forums
Hope you get this sorted, I can only imagine how stressful this would be. You can also email in if you want, we'll need your BT account details and forum username sent to the email address registered against my profile.
Thanks,
Stephanie

Pages (or Numbers) Template Cannot Be Opened From Outside the Application
Ever since the upgrade to Mavericks, I cannot open a Pages (or Numbers) template without being asked.....
Do you want to add this custom template to the Template Chooser? Then my only options are Cancel or Add to Template Chooser.
If I cancel, it won't open anything.
But this template is already in my Template Chooser.
So the only way to open a template in Pages (or Numbers) is to open the application first, and then click "New", and choose the template.
I can't figure out a way to open the template from outside the application, which is very very handy, rather than having to open the application every time that I want to access a template.
How can I open a template simply by clicking on it?Yes, the problem is that opening the template from outside of the application will not open the application, showing the document. I only get this....

Put your Pages or Numbers document on your desktop and open it by double-clicking it, and you'll understand. You can't do it, even if the template is in your template chooser.
The only way to do this now is to open the application, select "New", and the select the template. So you cannot open a template from outside the application....only from within. -
How to get the number of community members from outside the community
Hi everyone.
I need to know if there is any way to get the number of community members from outside the community, I mean, not using the "What's happening" webpart. I want to build up a page with a Webpart that summarize my three most visited communities indicating
number of members, three last messages in the newsfeed, and number of posts in blog, wikis, document libraries, etc.
Do I need statistics to get this kind of information? Should I use Sharepoint Object model instead?
Here is an example of what I need:
- Community name
- Number of members
- Community activity (messages, docs uploaded to library, etc)
- Number of posts in calendar, blog, wiki that belongs to community
Thank you all!Hi Thuan.
Thanks for your answer but it does not help me because these communities are Sharepoint Communities not external sites so I need to get that information using SP object model and BCS in this case is useless.
EDIT
I found the solution using the search objects but I was only able to get members, discussions and replies
using (ClientContext clientContext = new ClientContext("URL_OF_ENTERPRISE_SEARCH_CENTER"))
KeywordQuery keywordQuery = new KeywordQuery(clientContext);
keywordQuery.QueryText = "The_Name_of_the_Community WebTemplate:COMMUNITY";
SearchExecutor searchExecutor = new SearchExecutor(clientContext);
ClientResult<ResultTableCollection> results = searchExecutor.ExecuteQuery(keywordQuery);
clientContext.ExecuteQuery();
System.Collections.Generic.IDictionary<string, object> ret = null;
foreach (System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary<string, object> resultRow in results.Value[0].ResultRows)
Console.WriteLine("{0}: {1} ({2})", resultRow["CommunityMembersCount"], resultRow["CommunityTopicsCount"], resultRow["CommunitiyRepliesCount"]);
This is a Console Application.
I hope someone helps
