SMTP not responding properly

Hello,
I am running iMS 5.1 with bundled directory services 4.1 on a win2k.
yesterday there was a power failure and the server went for an abnormal reboot. Since then my iMS is not responding properly.
I am able to connect to port 25 but then after that theer is no respose from the server, it just hangs at that.
Even when I try to dirsync -F it will just not complete and will stay there.
What do I do now?
Pls help I am in a dire situation.
Regards,
Sanvir Jham

Thanks for the hint.
I finally managed to remove the dirsync.lock. __db_lock.share and __db_mpool.share from <server-root>/imta/tmp/ after making the iplanet services manual and then restarting the win2k server.
After removing these lock files, I again switched my iplanet services to automatic and restarted the machine.
Now the server sings :)
Thanks for replying,
S.

I neglected to mention, it just started doing this recently, probably within the last two weeks or so, it was fine before.

Connecting to it it wirelessly or via cat5?
If wirelessly does the same occur if you connect hard wired.?
Any other routers on your LAN?
Any new wireless devices, phones etc, added recently?

Some other users have reported same problem. I have not heard of a resolution. You can try:
    - Using another cable
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • Can't send messages from Mail from Comcast account - "SMTP not responding"

Using Mail and a Comcast account, I can receive but not send. The error message on trying to configure the outgoing mail server says the SMTP server isn't responding. If I click continue to set up the account in Mail, then go to Mail Preferences and tweak the ports between 587 and 25, triple check the username and password for the outgoing server, etc. -- still no dice.
I wonder if this might be the problem: Is it possible to configure Mail when you're not using a Comcast installed modem? I'm trying to get my Dad's account up and running on my old Mac with my airport extreme to earthlink modem connection (which works fine for Earthlink and .Mac e-mail accounts.) Apple support and Comcast tech support are both stumped on this one, referring me back and forth to each other. HELP!
    Thanks.

If I'm understanding this, you are trying to send messages with a Comcast account and SMTP server while connected to the internet with Earthlink?
If so, this is the cause of the problem. All ISPs now have restrictions on using an SMTP server that is outside of their network or not provided by the ISP used for connecting to the internet.
If you are connected to the internet with Earthlink at this house in California, contacting Comcast about a sending problem with their account and SMTP server when connected to the internet via Earthlink is a waste of time. You need to be contacting Earthlink if you are using Earthlink for your internet connection.
Do you also have an email account with Earthlink? If so, you can select/use Earthlink's authenticated SMTP server to send messages with your Comcast email account while connected to the internet with Earthlink or call Earthlink technical support regarding their required settings for an SMTP server that is outside of their network or not provided by Earthlink.

  • Macbook Pro 13'' Early 2011 Power Button not responding properly after spilled drink.

    Hi Everyone
I've spilled beer on my old macbook last december. I've reassembled pretty much the whole mac, cleaned the motherboard with Servisol (isopropyl alcohol) and applied new thermal compound. The mac is working (if turned on from the motherboard, however the power button doesn't work properly. If pressed several times, sometimes it either changes the brightness of the screen or takes you to the widgets.
The keyboard was disassembled and cleaned and everything else apart from left shift and power button appears to be working on the keyboard. The keyboard was disassembled soon after the spillage, which was few months ago.
As it was few months ago when I cleaned the keyboard, I''ve forgot whether the power button is a part of the keyboard or an individual module. Could anyone give me some advice on that? Any other suggestions regards to the power button?
Another problem I've encountered recently is lost administrator account (after an attempt to turn the mac on). I can only access the guest account, my main account doesn't even appear on the launch. I can still see the administrator's files, but can't access them as they're locked. Is there a way to get back the account or access the files from the computer?
    Many Thanks. Damian

    Hi M,
There are other threads here with similar issues. I do not know if a "common" fix has been found. Try an SMC Reset:

If no luck there, your Mac has a one year hardware warranty and I would contact AppleCare.

  • SMTP not working properly in Leopard mail

    Hello all,
I have upgraded to Leopard on all of my machines (yeah, I'm that kind of fanboy <grin>) and my corporate email (Exchange 2003) is working just fine over IMAP/SMTP on all of my machines except....
On my Mac Pro 8-core box, it is failing to successfully send messages over SMTP that have attachments.
I have deleted and recreated my email accounts on this machine and compared them (using the handy dandy new screen sharing tool in Leopard!) item for item to those on my functioning perfectly MacBook Pro.
On the exact same network I can send messages just fine on the MacBook Pro but cannot send messages with attachments on the Mac Pro. I can send messages on the Mac Pro that don't have attachments until they get over a certain size (not sure exactly where that is yet). This made me think it might be an MTU problem on my Ethernet card. I fiddled with that to no avail. I also saw someone on a board in .AU suggesting that I turn of IPV6 on the interface. That didn't work either.
In the "Mail Activity" pane in the UI (which I like by the way) it gets about halfway through the upload of the new message with an attachment and then it slows way down (to zero) and periodically twitches around like it is sending something but always drops back to zero at about the halfway point. Finally it gives up and suggests that I use a different SMTP server.
Dropping and recreating the .Mac account on this machine fixed SMTP to that server but the same "fix" didn't work for my IMAP account.
Since I can send short messages, I won't buy any suggestions that I have my authentication wrong or that there is a problem with the mail server (why does it work fine on my MacBook Pro) or that something might be screwy with my LAN (the MacBook Pro works fine).
To me, this screams some sort of bug or corrupted file from the Leopard upgrade.
Oh, one other thing I tried was creating a new user account and setting up Mail from scratch over there. No joy - same issue.
One final thing, nothing interesting happening in Console either.
Any help would be appreciated before I "scorched earth reinstall" this beast and start rebuilding my life.
    Thanks in advance,
    Bryan

    Bryan,
I am on the same boat. Here is my case. Mail 3.0 attempts to request TCP port 465 (why not 25) to my ISP's SMTP server. A dialog box from Mail 3.0 indicates that I should consider to use other SMTP server. I sent some via ".mac.com" which is a trial service.
    The message says;
The server “mail.222.rrrr.ne.jp” refused to allow a connection on port 465.
Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click.
Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be delivered...
But this is very strange if the architecture do not use TCP/25 port.

  • 2009 the attempt to burn a disc failed; the device did not respond properly

    Hi.
I've been reading through this very forum, and since 2001, mac users have faced the same issue with burning CDs on a newly update version of itunes. I recently downloaded the new itunes 9, as it was provided in my software updates. EVER since September 9th, 2009, I can no longer burn my playlists onto the appropriate CD-R's, and CD-RW's. I thought it was me. Then I read the entire forum on this very problem. Apparently, apple has done nothing with the situation. I decided I didn't believe that apple wouldn't NOT have a solution to this problem, seeing how the majority of the posts occurred between the years of 2001-2006.
I called apple a few days ago and spent an hour on the phone talking to technicians and apple support people about this problem. I thought 'hey, this is great I can finally get this problem resolved'. But, no. Instead they gave me a case # and told me to just restart the computer. Unfortunately, this did absolutely nothing. They then told me I would have to take my computer to the nearest apple store, which is not a convenient place to get to, and have an apple support employee look at it there.
SINCE this problem is recurring, does anyone have new information on how to solve this? I just wanted a CD and now I'm getting to the point where I've tried a MILLION different types of CD recordables (by that I mean brand) with no resolve. Please, please help me.
I don't even care about the CD anymore to be honest. I'm so fed up with trying to figure out why this happened that I could care less. I am more focused on finding a solution. Has anyone tried to un-install their newly updated itunes version after this happened?
Hm. Please keep me posted. Thanks & take care.
    -G.

If it's a medium write error there's nothing iTunes or Mac OS X can do about it - it's a fault within the drive for whatever reason - aging laser, dusty lens, bad disc, etc.
Frustrating perhaps, but it's the drive's firmware that generated the media check, not the operating system or iTunes.
I'm getting a similar, but slightly different error message; however I think the issue might be the same and I have to respectfully disagree with William that it's the drive and NOT iTunes.
I can burn onto DVD using iPhoto with no problems. I can burn onto CD (even the CDs iTunes rejected with the above error message) using Toast Titanium 10 with no problem. If my drive was at fault I don't believe I would be successful burning anything. I only have trouble in iTunes--when I didn't have problems before.
In a way I'm glad to have this problem as I've discovered Toast 10T is faster and better for burning to CD anyway. I'm just lucky that I have it. What about everyone else that is having this problem? They shouldn't have to go out and buy other software to do something that iTunes is supposed to be able to do.

  • Touch screen is not responding properly

My iphone just started acting crazy today and I have reset it a couple of times and still the problem persists.  It's as if the touch signals that are sent to the phone have nothing to do with what I'm actually doing.  For example at times it can be impossible to power off or close applications.  I may touch the dead center of the screen and the phone may be behave as though I touched an upper right or lower left corner.  Sometimes the interface is also sluggish...
What can I do short of restoring the whole phone?
Are there any iPhone viruses?  I'd say it's behaving as though there is a virus!

If you have tried power off/on, reset by holding the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears and it restarts, and still get this behavior, the only viable solution is an Apple store.  There are no virus that infect the iPhone and cause this behavior.
And the screen is not pressure sensitive, it depends on a change in the capacitance of the screen due to contact with the skin...so hard taping and hard pressure have no effect.
The behavior of trying to close apps makes it sound like there is a fault in the screen or its connecting circuitry.
None of which really helps your situation if you are not able to visit an Apple store.

  • User profile is not responding properly

So I recently purchased a macbook pro . I also have an iMac (late 2006) running 10.6 and a macbook (late 2008) running 10.5. Both the iMac and macbook have died and I have rebuilt them (died well after warranty). This is in regards to the macbook. My dad wanted to try out the mac os because he is thinking of changing. I set up a new user profile, logged in, removed un-needed items from the dock, added a few items to the dock he did need, and then to be nice I was going to open firefox and set up some of the bookmarks of his that I do know. I got a weird error from firefox, I looked it up, and have it bookmarked to fix. The problem is when I logged out of his account, I logged back in the next day to show him the basics around the desktop and everything was back in the dock. Almost as if no changes occured. So I tried again, moved things around, this time I shut down the macbook, booted it back up, logged in his profile, everything was back to default. To say the least I'm stumped.
To be on the safe side I repaired permissions and verified disk with only minimal repairs and an okay disk. I zapped pram and rebooted the smc. Still nothing new. I deleted that profile, repeated pram and smc, logged into my account, created a brand new account for him, different name and information, different password. Logged in, moved stuff around, logged out, logged back in, everything in default. Since I did have to repair the macbook I thought about trying to boot from disk to repair however the one thing I could not afford when I repaired it was fixing the super drive and never really figured I would need to as I had the iMac and now the macbook pro. My last thought before coming here is to pull the hdd, put it in my external enclosure (set up to swap drives, the iTank, I love it for what I do and for when I bought it), then put the disk in the iMac or the pro and boot from disk to maybe reinstall 10.5. I didn't do that though as I figured I would try to get knowledge from anyone else that might know what is going on without me having to mess with hardware.
Does anyone have anything they can add to this? Is there something I am missing? Am I just cursed by the gods?

    Clem
I am glad you have fixed it. To give yourself more protection in the future I advise that you install AppleJack (a hidden disk utility) and Carbon Copy Cloner. Here is some general advice of mine from elsewhere:
Backup all data, especially Home folders, to an external disk or DVD - notes 1, 2
Install AppleJack - free from: http://sourceforge.net/projects/applejack/
Boot holding cmd S until you see text
Do nothing until the text stops
    Type: applejack AUTO shutdown
    Hit return - note 3
Reboot and test after the Mac has shut down - note 4
    Notes:
Better still backup the whole disk with Carbon Copy Cloner from: http://www.bombich.com/
If you have a spare disk or partition it is best to ensure that it is a bootable OS
It can take an hour or more - ignore the many serious looking diagnostics
First boot will take longer than usual as caches are rebuilt
    Good luck

Yes I am having the same problem. I can't find any info about it and nothing seems to help. I am just posting this in hope that if it's a wider problem, there will be a quick solution.
