SMTP Problems with Orange.co.uk

Hi
I have set up mail with my .Mac account with the smtp on port 587 and that works fine. But when I setup my smtp for the ISP I am on (Orange.co.uk) it does not matter if its port 25 or 587.. nothing will allow me to connect to my ISP's smtp server. Any Ideas...
MacBook C2D   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

If you are able to send messages with your .Mac account using the .Mac authenticated SMTP server and your ISP's SMTP server does not work, this indicates the settings for your ISP's SMTP server are not correct.
Have you contacted your ISP?

  • SMTP problem with 10.4.2

I am having trouble sending email via SMTP like several others I've seen posted in this forum. In my case
    1) This occurs from 2 different machines, both running Mac OS X 10.4.2, so I think the problem is generic to 10.4.2.
    2) I can telnet to port 25 on the server in question, so it's not a network or DNS problem.
    3) I can access other SMTP servers fine, so I don't think the problem is a general Mail bug, which would have generated 1000x more discussion traffic.
    4) I can even access the server is question when I'm inside the firewall at work, where authentication is not required.
This would seem to point the finger at the authentication mechanism between the Mac and specific SMTP server software. I've discussed this in detail with the helpdesk people at my work and we've found that according to the SMTP server logs, the connection fails because of a lack of TLS (SSL), even though that check box is selected on both of my Macs. I'm guessing there is a problem with the Mail SSL and this version of the server software. The SMTP server is running PMDF version 6.2-1 on Solaris 9.
I thought I'd post this as a separate thread to collect information on the SMTP server software where there are problems. If you are having SMTP server problems and can find out the version of SMTP software running, we may find the pattern.
    Raph

not sure if this is related, but mail 2.0.5 on OS10.4.3 doesn't let me change smtp servers consistently. often times, an smtp server that i have added in mail/preferences/accounts doesn't even show up as an option in the dropdown menu when a mail send fails. ever run into this?

  • SMTP problem with WRT54GL

I've seen similar issues here but haven't seen a solution yet. Whenever I send an email there is a 30 second delay. This is true for all computers on my network, windows or linux and for two different SMTP servers at different locations. Also Thunderbird and Outlook show the same problem, the router seems to be the common element.
I used Wireshark to capture the transaction and found a consistent problem. The TCP/IP connection gets created very quickly (SYN/SYN-ACK/ACK) and then there is a 30 second delay before receiving the first SMTP 220 packet.
My theory is that the first packet returned from the SMTP server is getting blocked by the router, causing it to time out and retry. To test this idea I put one of my systems in the DMZ and the message got sent right away.
Now, here's where it gets a little more interesting. I had expected only the DMZ machine to be helped but *all* of the systems worked correctly with this one machine in the DMZ. I even tried putting an embedded linux based NAS server as the DMZ machine and again the situation improved. I also tried setting the DMZ to an unused IP address in the subnet and that did not make the problem go away, otherwise I might just have left it at that, but I don't want to have any real machines in DMZ.
I am only seeing this problem with SMTP packets, and then it's only the first one that comes back from the server. HTTP, SSH, everything is fine.
BTW, firewall on the router is disabled as well as on the clients. The router is at firmware revision 4.30.5 which is the most recent that I found on the Linksys site.
Any clues, things to try? I can provide any details for network captures if it will help.
    Thanks in advance,
    Joe Meadows

Well, 30 seconds sounds like something tries to connect to a "stealth" port and retries until it times out. This usually happens, when you have a SMTP, POP or IMAP server running on Unix which still uses the identd service on port 113. With ident the server asks the client about the username which is trying to connect. This service is pretty useless in the internet because it is totally unsecure and thus no server can rely on this anymore, but some libraries still have it built-in.
The problem arises when the client computer or the gateway in front of the client is "stealth"ing ports. If a port is closed (because no service is running on port 113) the computer would immediately reply to that no connection can be established. However, people think it is better when the port is "stealth" meaning: the computer does not answer at all, thinking the computer would be invisible (which it is not because a computer that is not answering is obviously there...)
The standard IP procedure for the server is to wait for the answer until it times out. Then retry 2 or 3 times. Quickly you have 30 seconds until the server gives up on the identd and continues.
However, you say you have the firewall disabled on your router. That would mean that the ident port should be properly reported closed and is not stealth. You could test with a port scan in the internet whether your internet ports are really reported closed or "stealth"ed. It should be closed if the firewall is off. (By the way, firewall off means access to the web-based management from the internet is possible...)
Many routers have the option to filter ident in the security settings. Usually you would turn off that option if you experience this problem. It should be off with the firewall turned off. However, all the symptoms you describe would fit.
If you put a host into DMZ which is not running a firewall and thus does not keep port 113 stealth it obviously helps any client that connects: the ident request is always sent to the DMZ and the DMZ reports the port closed and immediately the connection continues.
I used to forward port 113 on a different router to my network printer because it has a static IP address and it does not have a firewall thus reports 113 closed.
You could try to remove the DMZ and only forward port 113 to that computer.
You could also install a packet sniffer on the DMZ to see what packets arrive when you try to connect with a client to the SMTP server. Then you should see that a ident SYN on port 113 arrives (or something else if it is not ident...)

  • Smtp problems with Telefonica Spain

I have recently bought a macbook and I´m trying to set up the mail.
I tried all the possibilities but I can´t send emails. There is a problem with the smtp server configuration.
I can receive emails but I can´t send any email using the Telefonica smtp server. My router is a Xavi wireless 7868.
Because Telefonica don´t give any technical support for mac users I need help.
Anyone with the same problem ?
    Thank you very much

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
From a little bit of Google research, it is possible that the Telefonica SMTP is not separately authenticated, but rather is authenticated by some reference to the Incoming server. If this were to be true, then you should try using Port 25, and None as the method of Authentication. This would be setup by clicking on the arrows beside the name of the SMTP and choosing Edit Server list. Remove any multiple entries for this SMTP, and in the one remaining click on the Advance tab, and in that window choose None as the Authentication method, and remove any Username and Password, then finally check to use this server only. Also, choose the Use Custom Port and directly enter Port 25.
If you have a link showing setup examples in, say, Outlook Express, I could be more certain about this.

  • SMTP problems with Apple Mail 6.2

Recently my Apple Mail 6.2 has become messed up. It tells me that all my accounts (a gmail, me.com & cloud) are all offline and can not be brought back on line. The Mail on my iPhone and iPad works fine with the exact same settings and exact same accouts that I have had for many months. Something has changed in Mac OS 8 Mountain Lion in release 6.2, IS THIS FIXED?

This is how to solve the problem:
    - Open Mail.
    - at top left, click Mail, then Preferences.
    - Choose the Accounts tab.
    - highlight your first mail account on left.
    - towards the bottom right, click the arrows on the right side of
'Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)' and choose the
       ' 'Edit SMTP Server List'
    - When the next box opens, click the 'Advanced' tab in the middle right
       of that box.
    - choose 'Use custom port:' (2nd choice in middle) and put the
value 25 in the box on right (i.e. you are forcing Port 25,
        which is the standard port)
    - you should be able to 'OK' out of all the boxes, and the SMTP server
       should no longer say Offline.
In 2 out of about 20 Mac's I had to go back in and choose
Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) click OK,
then immediately go back and Uncheck the Use SSL box, and click OK again.
In both of those cases I also had to reboot / Restart.
It was probably the 'restart' that got the settings to take hold,
but since I tried checking SSL both times to force the change, I listed it here.
If I had to try with another system, I would skip the SSL step and just reboot.
    Port 25 is listed as one of the default ports in choice 1 on the last page;
but it seems like the latest release of Mail for both Lion and Mountain Lion
    never really checks port 25.
Like I said, I had to do this with EVERY Mail account after Mail updated to 6.3
in both Lion and Mountain Lion upgrades,
. . . and it worked for all of them.  Feel free to ask questions, I'll check back.

  • Problems with Orange firmware when using 6301 on O...

I have bought and unlocked an Orange-branded Nokia 6301 handset, and it seems that the Wi-fi and Email functions are tied to the Orange configuration settings (in Settings> Configuration). You can add O2 configuration settings, but they only seem to be applied to MMM and Web browsing, not the other functions, which remain 'tied to' the Orange config. settings, which of course I cannot use as I am on O2.
This in effect makes the phone pretty useless, I have tried updating the firmware (with same version as was on latest), but the Firmware Updater in the PC Suite seems to be wise to the branding - it updates with the same network firmware that the phone was on before (not the SIM card one).
I have also read elsewhere that the Wifi only works on Orange if the phone is Orange-branded, so I suspect I might have a problem here unless I can overwrite the firmware with a non-Orange/O2 version - can anyone advise how to do this, or how else to solve the above problem? Even getting the email working would be great...

The only legitimate way to remove operator branding is:
    1) Get the phone SIM unlocked (already done apparently)
    2) Get written permission from the operator to remove the branded firmware (this is the hard bit!)
    3) Take phone, proof of ownership and written permission to your nearest Nokia Care Point, who will make the necessary changes to the phone, install generic firmware onto it and print out a new battery compartment label for it.
    Good luck with step 2...

  • SMTP problem with Mail 6.2

I have been banging my head against a wall with Ipage who host my e-mail as their SSL SMTP server stopped working a month or so back and I could not send e-mail from my Mac Book. Using Connection Doctor it looked as if I was being identified as UCE. Nothing worked and IPAGE could not throw a light on the problem; they said that my settings were fine (and indeed they work on Iphone and PC). I've just installed Outllok on my MacBook and it seems to work fine so my conclusion is that there is some problem generated by the upgrade to Mac Mail 6.2.
Has anybody else had a similar problem, or found a Mac Mail solution.
    Many thanks
    Mark

    Mark,
I have had the same problem and after contacting Apple they suggested the following which worked for me so maybe it will solve your problem as well.
    Open system preferences
    Select network
Highlight your connection (wifi, Ethernet or whatever)
Select advance from bottom right corner
    Select the DNS tab
    Click on the + symbol
    Enter 8.8.8.8
    Apply or save.
This worked for me instantly. The DNS 8.8.8.8 is Googles and aparantly they have a very good network system. I am unsure if this is an iPage problem or an Apple problem but in the end Apple came up with a solution on the first time of asking. If iPage's support was any good they would have contacted apple themselves as quite a few iPage customers have the same problem if their face book page is anything to go by.
    I hope it helps you
    Raymond

I cannot send mails neither Mail nor Thunderbird with two differents accounts: GMAIL and another private company.
The configuration it seems ok (I'm computer engineering), I can receive mails with pop/imap, but OCASSIONALLY  I can send one mail but It's so strange.
This fact happens along two week and so on... I am very tyred of searching solutions on google and mac forums...: I try to change the ports, set different ports, change time out tcdp connections, use SMTP-GMAIL to send all emails, firewall desactivated,..... but nothing works.
    I have a Macbook Air, with Mountain Lion 10.8.2 . Thunderbird > v.17.0, released: November 20, 2012
    and MAIL > Versión 6.2 (1499)
Smtp configuration of my private company (It works on Ubuntu with Thunderbird):
    smtp.uib.es
    port 587
    password X
    STARTTLS
    SMTP GMAIL configuration:
    smtp.googlemail.com
    465
    SSL/TS
    I appreciate your help

Well. I was wrong... my company doest not apply some security network control in SMTP messages.
Thus, It works temporally that day.
I am with the same problem in both accounts: GMAIL and myCompany

  • Problem with 6101 and Orange UK: phone silently ge...

Hello, I have a Nokia 6101 and I've twice experienced an incredibly annoying problem with it (to use mild words). I did a good search on the forum but I didn't find anything. First of all, I must say that the phone was originally bought in Italy (from Telecom Italia Mobile) and then moved to England, where I'm using it with Orange UK. I just exchanged the SIMs and it worked fine at once, so I assumed everything was OK. The problem I mentioned is as follows: the phone appears to work normally and reports good strength for the signal BUT if people actually try to call me the phone doesn't ring at all and (so I've been told) is seen as switched off. Furthermore -- even worse -- apparently they are also unable to text me (the text is somehow rejected, I don't know the exact error message other people get). Also, if I try to call or text someone while the phone is in this zombie state it doesn't work (sorry I didn't write down the exact error message I got). In fact trying to use the phone is he only way of knowing that something is wrong. I've been using this phone for about a month and this thing has happened (as far as I know!) twice, once just a few days after I first got the phone, and the second time yesterday (which caused an untold amount of distress as I was waiting for an important call). Switching the phone off and then on again solved the problem in both cases, so I assume is some sort of firmware problem, possibly a minor incompatibility between my phone/firmware and Orange Uk. Has anybody come across a problem like this? What should I do? Any suggestion would be very welcome, because otherwise I'll have to do sample calls every 15 minutes just to check that the phone is working properly! This are the details of my firmware, as given by *#0000#: Nokia 6101 V 04.50 RM-76 (c) Nokia. Language: V 04.50 19-12-05 RM-76 Thanks, Lorenzo

        Hi papaluciano!
You're working in Luxembourg, but your SIM card is not allowing your phone to work! This must be irritating for you. Because you got your SIM card from Orange, please discuss the issue with them for a resolution. When buying a SIM card internationally, you are using the service of the other carrier. In addition, this is not something that would need an update. Please let me know how this works out for you. Thanks!

  • Problem with yahoo! SMTP POP server mail account on new upgraded iphone 4.3.5

    PLEASE HELP!
I am a California AT&T wireless customer with a new iphone 4 on the iOS 4.3.5 upgraded system and suddenly I am unable to successfully add my Yahoo! email account and have it configured to send/receive my emails.  I was able to successfully add my gmail and Microsoft exchange server account, but only problems with the Yahoo!  I checked all the settings, have done several add/delete accounts, restore network settings, and retry/reboots, to no avail.  This is a seriously annoying problem, it worked with the pre-upgraded older version fine without any problems ever.  I continually get the same error message:  SERVER UNAVAILABLE, please try again later.
I know this error is inaccurate because all my other email accounts work fine as well as Safari and all other internet connections and apps.  It is not a phone thing, it is some yahoo and upgraded software incompatibility issue that no one seems to have resolved yet.
This is a SMTP PUSH POP account, and I have literally tried everything.  I have tried all the fixes while connected to wifi, and then tried them just via my 3G cell network connection.  I read on a message board about turning on/off SSL, could someone tell me how to do that?  When I go into to:
settings>mail accounts>outgoing mail server SMTP>Yahoo! SMTP, everything is grayed out and I can't change any ports or SSL.
When I try to manually add a server, which I was told was a fix, I don't know what to type into the host name.  Does anyone know how to help?
I have seen this problems on numerous message boards, even in the UK.  I contacted Apple Support, with no success in resolving this problem, had an open case for several days contacted several supervisor personnel, all advised me to contact Yahoo! who do not offer customer care via telephone only online, and nothing there helped to resolve my issue.
    PLEASE, PLEASE HELP!
    THANKS

Yahoo's servers have been having problems off and on now for close to a month if not longer. There's not much you can do about it except talk to Yahoo, which is kind of like beating your head against a wall.  They've had problems like this off and on since as far back as the mid 90's. I gave up on them long ago. Just convert to something else and dump them. It's not worth the headache.

You might also try removing all gmail passwords from your keychain in Keychain Access. Then connect again and enter the password code given by Google.

Going through the feedback and support pages will be a waste of your time. Apple won't respond to feedback, and support can't do anything regarding product suggestions, particularly not from a company with an existing product they wish to sell. The only attention you might get from Apple would be possible interest in selling your product through the Apple Stores, and I don't know how Apple chooses the third-party products they sell. All I could suggest would be writing to Apple's corporate headquarters:
    Apple
    1 Infinite Loop
    Cupertino, CA 95014
with perhaps "Attention: Retail Sales Division" and telling them about your product and your interest in it being sold through the Apple Stores.
    Regards.

  • Problem with access to SMTP, IMAP, POP3 protocols in CAS 2013.

    Hi,
we have problem with access thgrough SMTP, IMAP, POP3 protocols in CAS 2013.
If I test connection to SMTP 25 port from other computer, session end quickly.
Test from CAS2013 to localhost or public IP is OK (similar also for IMAP and POP3).
Receive connectors are with defaults settings, firewall is disabled.
Service Microsoft Frontend Transport Services restarted, but no success.
Certificate is assigned to IMAP, POP3, SMTP, IIS.
IIS and HTTP(s), protocols are OK. Clients can connects only thgrough web, mobile (ActiveSync), or with Outlook with proxy.
Do you have some tip, what to test?
If I create new testing receive connector on port 26 for anonymous, behaviour is same, quick disconnecting.
    Thank's Mirek

    Hi,
Pleaser try to use the following link to test your STMP/POP/IMAP e-mail, and check the test if successful:
    https://testconnectivity.microsoft.com/
If unsuccessful, please check the test result, it will tell us what caused the problem.
    Thanks.
