SMTP server has rejected address

When sending an email to a specific address - and only for that specific address - I always get the following message from [email protected]:
Remote SMTP server has rejected address
Diagnosecode: smtp;553 sorry, your envelope sender is in my badmailfrom list (#5.7.1)
Remote-System: dns;mail.apswiss.ch (TCP|17.148.16.105|38370|212.203.95.158|25) (vz-apm-v1.feelfree.ch ESMTP)
The same happens when I directly reply to an email from that address.
Sending the same email from my iPhone works perfectly.
What's wrong? Mail app otherwise works fine.
Any help much appreciated.THX
Daniel

This started happening to me on 8/19/2013 and happens sporadically. If you find a solution please post it I am calling apple tis AM.

    Hello KjelleH,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Given the error you're receiving, it appears that the spelling of the email address is being put in incorrectly.  Rather than spelling "iCloud" you have it spelled "iclod."

  • ICloud email generating error SMTP has rejected address

A very strange thing just started happening this weekend.  I have been an iCloud user since it was .Mac and it's been my primary email client for years.  I receive about one new email every five minutes.  I can send and receive email from my MacBook Pro, my iphone, my iPad, and via icloud.com.  I all these platforms constantly and I've had zero issues... until yesterday.
The main email address I use is technically an alias.  It's a @me address, since that's the shortest to type.  Yesterday a co-worker informed me she had gotten this error message when trying to send me email (yet I've been receiving daily emails from her for months):
Reason: Remote SMTP server has rejected address
Diagnostic code: smtp;550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias
Sure enough, I looked and realized I had not received any email all day, and I have still not received any today.  Normally I receive several emails per hour.  I checked my mail via icloud.com and there was nothing there either.  I let it go for the rest of the day, figuring it was a server problem that Apple was working on.
This morning, however, the problem was continuing.  So I tried generating a test message from icloud.com and sent it to my main alias (my primary email address, because it's easier to remember) and also to my main icloud email, which is also a @me address.  The test email went through to my main icloud address with no problem but was rejected by the main alias with the same error message as above.
Next, I tried investigating my aliases.  I have made no changes to any settings in quite some time,  but this is what I found.  When I checked my email aliases (I have 3 @me alliases beyond my main icloud id) on icloud.com, they had all vanished.  Then I looked at the icloud advanced settings on my iphone.  I saw that all the @me aliases remained, however my main @me alias was grayed out.
And that's where I'm at now.  I thought for sure this was an Apple server problem, but I haven't seen any other messages reporting the problem, so I'm not sure how to proceed.
Thanks in advance for anyone's help!

    Hi Fly Line,
My world has gone eerily quiet too.
I am in exactly the same situation but mine is an old @mac address
So like you, the main email address I use is an @mac.com alias. I get lots of emails every day for work.  They all stopped coming to this alias yesterday (June 6th)
Mail was behaving oddly, but I was too busy to work out what was happening.
I've just discovered that all my original @mac alliases have disappeared from Mail on my iMac and also have disappeared when I log into iCloud via Safari
The aliases are showing up on my iPhone, but as you have said, the primary email address (mine is an @mac adddress) is greyed out. I'm not sure if that's just because it's the primary address.
The aliases ARE showing up on my Macbook Pro.
I tried sending an email from both the iMac and the Macbook. Both returned the message "The server response was: unknown or illegal alias: alias"
I havent changed any settings either.  I can't help you as I am at a complete loss. I may try calling Apple on Monday. I'll let you know if I come up with anything. It would be great to hear from you if you have found a solution

  • My email on my mac (which has iCloud) is giving me a message that the server has rejected my password.  When I go onto the internet and sign into iCloud there, the password is accepted.  What am I doing wrong??

My email on my mac (which has iCloud) is giving me a message that the server has rejected my password.  When I go onto the internet and sign into iCloud there, the password is accepted.  What am I doing wrong??

Thanks...I just spent an hour on the phone with Apple Support sorting out the password issues for my various devices!!!  My password was compliant with the new rules, but there were some (mysterious) setting issues that required me to delete mail from my MacBookPro and add it back, again.  All in all, it was an hour of trouble-shooting which resulted in what, I hope, is a good fix.
Thanks for your help...wishing you continued success in the support community.

  • SMTP server is  rejecting my password in Mail

We have a .Mac account with 4 email addresses on it. For some reason my wife's account works on the .Mac web page fine, but not on the Mac mail app.
She can get mail but when she tries to send, we keep getting a "the smtp server rejected the password for email.mac.com account"
I've checked her account settings against mine (which works fine) and I can't find a difference.
thanks in advance for the help!

I may not be using the right password...never had to enter one to use me.com, but every now and then I would get asked for a password and I would just hit cancel and mail would work fine.

  • TS1307 my smtp server has (offline) after it and will not send messages

Ever since I had to change my email server to mobile me. I have not been able to send email. Can receive but not send. The SMTP server address has (offline) after it? I have tried everything and nothing has worked.

This helped me too. I had to go back and reset everything from password to in and out going ISP info. After deleting and logging off and cleaning off everything then reentering all my info it started sending backed up messages instantly. This link helped alot. Not impressed with the mobile me program at all. considering going back to my ISP email server for the future. Just to many issues with the MM software and no phone number or possible way to contact tech support so its useless to me with out it.

  • Odd SMTP server behaviour - Recipient address rejected: Service is unavaila

    Hi,
I noticed since upgrading to 10.6 that some emails took a long time to go through on my mail server. Looking at the logs it looks as if a lot of mails are being rejected on the first try with a ...
450 4.7.1 <[removed]@[removed]>: Recipient address rejected: Service is unavailable
The next attempt to deliver seems to succeed.
Any suggestions where to look at what is going wrong? I have log level set to debug but there is no extra info so I am unsure which service is unavailable.

  • Message stating my POP server has rejected my password

Of late - something like the last three weeks - I have been getting a Mail error intermittently. There is no pattern that I can establish.
The error occurs when Mail attempts to check for new emails. I keep two accounts, and the error does not necessarily happen for both at the same time, but can.
    The error says:
<The POP server "POP.XXXX.ca" rejected the password for user "[email protected]" Please re-enter your password, or cancel.>
Is there anyone else who has seen this? Is this the OS or the ISP?

You dont say your using Comcast but if you are here is a link to the settings for OSX 10.5.5
I have used this on a number of Mac's and found that the problems were no more.
I you are using Comcast you will have to sign in to get to this link

  • New SMTP server has SSL. One of two Ethernet networked Macs works, the other doesn't. Help!

We changed from Optimum to Verizon FIOS today. We have two Macs connected by Ethernet. The Mini running Mavericks and Thunderbird 24.6 was able to set the outgoing server as smtp.verizon.net on port 465 with connection security SSL/TLS with no authentication and it works fine.
The other Mac is an ancient G4 running 10.3.9 and TB 2.0.23 and it does not accept running without authentication.
With optonline, we ran on port 25 with no authentication.
I tried putting in the user name and pw we entered on verizon.net, and that doesn't work. I tried the user name and pw from our pop mailbox, and that doesn't work. BTW, the incoming mail is working fine on both computers.
What's going on? How do we fix it?

But I don't know what user name and password to enter. When I enter the username and password from my Verizon account on the 2nd linked computer, it does not recognize it. Does it have to be entered on both computers? What do we select on the 1st computer running Mavericks? Normal password? Then do we enter our Verizon username and password?

I have one main account and three sub-accounts. One sub-account has stopped working (which is my main email account) with the above errors. It was fine until yesterday lunchtime - now I can't get my emails. My wife's accounts still work, as does the main account. I need to access my emails - if possible, without calling a dreadful Indian helpline...
    Please help...

    Well, that was a doozy.
Live Chat worked fine - feels very strange but is much better than a difficult to understand phone conversation. It turns out that the 'account has been compromised'. Not entirely sure what ‘compromised’ means but it's now locked and I have to wait for the Security Team to phone me (within 4 hours - he promised!).
About three days ago I noticed that I got dozens and dozens of bouncing emails (all from yahoo.com). I knotted my eyebrows but didn’t know what was causing it – now I do! The gent on Live Chat said I would be able to get back to the account soon enough, so I hope it’s going to be okay.
I’ve been trying to trace my interwebising over the last few days, and anything that required my email. There is only one: accounts website AAT (http://www.aat.org.uk/), and their forums. Just like most website forums & registrations, they required an email verification… I’m sure it was not fake but their security must have been breached at some point, which has stuffed me a bit too. Sigh.
I’m not even sure what I could have done to avoid the problem (since I had to register with AAT). I have thought about it but there’s been nothing else that’s needed an email contact…
You live and learn, I suppose. From what Sangee said it seems that the security people are able to ‘mend’ the account – I hope so as deleting it and starting yet another email account will be a bit of a pooh.
    We’ll see. Thanks again, Keith.
    Cheers,
    Chris

  • Why do we have separate selectors for "from" and "smtp server" these days?

A while back we shifted our email from our own domain and virtual server to gmail.  As was the case using our own domain, we still have two seperate "from" names in a selector above the body of an email being composed, but now the selector for the SMTP server has two possibilities, both "smtp.gmail.com" but one ending with ":[email protected]" and the other ":[email protected]".  So now we have the possibility of sending emails with the email addresses "crossed" between the two selections.  Since both accounts use "smtp.gmail.com", is there a way to reconfigure the Apple Mail accounts so that there's only the "from" selector and not two entries in the server selector?

Open up Mail's preferences. Under the Accounts tab, highlight one of the accounts. Each account should have their own SMTP server with the correct user I'd and password. If not, create one for each by editing the SM TP list. With the correct server shown in the list for the account highlighted, check the box to use only that server for that account. Repeat for the other account. You will still have 2 accounts in the server list, but it will automatically send from the correct server unless you have problems. If so, you will be given the option to use the other.
Under the composing tab, select the appropriate account to send new messages from. You will probably want it set to send from the selected account.
There is another way with gmail. You can go into gmail's settings. In settings for one account, you can add the other address to it for sending messages and set it to show the correct account it is sent from. I haven't had a gmail account in years, so you will have to explore that option for yourself if you wish to use it. Then you can use the same server for both accounts.
You can also go in to settings for the second account and add the other to it. That way it will always show the correct address no matter which server an account uses.

  • Domain controller anomalous connection to remote Redplaid SMTP server

We've been battling some bandwidth issues at my company lately and so we've done extensive scouring of our Cisco ASA logs to try and find the source(s) of the problem. Over the weekend I ran into this little gem:
    2014-03-22 12:14:13        Local4.Warning 10.100.20.1 %ASA-4-106023: Deny tcp src Lan1:10.100.20.74/49353 dst HSInternet:209.134.48.10/25 by access-group "Lan1_access_in" [0xb0069b3c, 0x0]
This is an entry in our firewall's syslog that shows that one of my domain controllers (10.100.20.74 in the example) is attempting, unsuccessfully, to connect to an outside SMTP server at the address 209.134.48.10 on port 25 (we only recently closed this
type of connection on our network, so previous connections may have been successful). We have no software installed that would be making SMTP connections anywhere, and I've scanned the machine thoroughly looking for malware or viruses or rootkits. All
this machine does is AD domain services, DHCP, and DNS. It has no third party software installed, and never has.
The IP 209.134.48.10 has a reverse DNS entry of df7yjcp1.redplaid.com, and I hooked to it using telnet to confirm that it is indeed an SMTP server. Redplaid seems to be some hosting company based out of Missouri, but beyond that I have no additional information
    on the company.
Does anyone have any idea why my global catalog is making SMTP connections to a seemingly random server on the internet?

    Hi,
When did this issue occur and before that what operations did you have?
I would like to suggest you recheck all Domain controllers in your domain, and check out whether IIS SMTP service has been installed. If you are running windows 2008 based domain controllers, did you set up SMTP replication, did you have
    Exchange installed in your environment?

  • Mail SMTP server not accepting password. Works on all other clients.

I am having issues with Mail and sending emails. Firstly I would like to say I have set this account up on Outlook 2011, Thunderbird and also Outlook PC and I can send and recieve with no problems.
On Mac mail I can recieve emails perfectly.
The account is set up with an SMTP Server. Our server requires authentication therefore I supply my username and password in there too. When I try to send an email mail says the server has rejected the password and asks for the correct password. The password I put in is correct, as it is the same password I have used on the other clients.
So there is something that Mail doesnt like when it comes this server and I cant work out what it is.
The only thing I thought of is that my password is all numbers. Could that make a difference?
    Any ideas?

    andrewrob,
I had the same problem and found that I had to unlock CAPTCHA here: http://www.google.com/  accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha.
This worked for me. If that doesn't work, you could try this:
    1. Open Keychain Access (located inside the Utilities folder which is inside the Applications folder)
    2. Highlight the login keychain in the white box to the left.
    3. Click the lock above it to lock the login keychain.
    4. Now unlock it.
    5. Go back to Mail and enter your password again. You will probably have to do it once for incoming mail and once for outgoing mail.
    I hope this helps!

  • My e-mails are not sending. "connection to SMTP server timed out." How do I get this working?

As of yesterday, I am receiving e-mails fine; however, unable to send. Everytime I try to send an e-mail, I get "Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server (my mail address) timed out. Try again or contact your network administrator.
I received help from lunarpages (they host my domain); however, they were unable to resolve the issue. They suggested something is blocking IP, or need to update Thunderbird, or there's a firewall there...
    Help!!!
My clients are waiting for responses to e-mails!
    Thank you.

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:
*Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
*Restart the operating system in '''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe_mode safe mode with Networking]'''. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode Windows 8], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 Windows 7], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-vista Windows Vista], [http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true" Windows XP], [http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564 OSX]
; If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.
