SMU error=3

Hello everybody,
My iMac G5 last version of PowerPC with iSight is stuck while booting. When I boot in verbose mode shows SMU error #3 and does not go any further. If that means replacing the same... Where is it and how? Any sugestion would be welcomed. I am new to it...
Thanks in advance
switcher and liking it.
PS I reset PRAM and SMU several times and logged in in target mode, used diskworier 4.1 to repair the drive to no avail.

Thanks EZ,
I reside in the black hole of new technology. No apple store, nothing locally . I am hard of hearing and can't communicate verbally over the phone. So this is my umbilical connection to the outside world.
I finally resolved the problem by fresh OS install after replacing my internal optical drive. I was not able to use external for some reason. Not even network boot or the other methods suggested in other chats. Someone told me that Apple machines like their factory APPLE drives, even if they are made in China. OH yes I read the tread you linked me to it to no avail.
Thanks again for your suggestion.

  • "Random" reboots

My dual core 2.3 is rebooting itself about once a week or so. It's happening while the machine isn't being used, and I believe while it's sleeping. I've been looking through the system.log (which I don't know much about) and found the following line which seems like it might be the relevant one:
    Apr 29 09:59:56 localhost kernel[0]: AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = -110
Is this the cause, and if so what does the code mean?
    Thanks,

From reading these you will no doubt realise that there is, unfortunately, no handy list of SMU error codes and therefore no easy answer.
You could try some, or all, of the suggested fixes - but you may wish to call Apple After-Sales Support for their solution. Good Luck.

  • 1073807202 error in Keithley 2401 SMU

    Every one.
I am using Labview 2012. I am trying to interface Keithley 2401 SMU with laptop via Keithley-GPIB KUSB 488B. When I am trying to run the program, it is indicating error 1073807202. I have reinstalled all the labview software, NI-VISA (latest), drivers and 2401 library files, but the problem remain as the same.
Can any one hepl me. I need to fix this problem as soon as possible as I need this for my research purpose.
Also can u suggest me the SOP (Standard operating procedure) sequence for installing labview, NI-VISA and instrument driver.
    Thanking you
    Avishek Das

The error is probably due to your use of a Keithley controller instead of one from NI. Have you checked with them about using their hardware? How does the controller show up in MAX?

  • Constantly resetting SMU for lost Bluetooth/Memory errors

We are constantly losing bluetooth and randomly experiencing other behaviors that are usually helped by resetting the SMU. But we're now resetting the SMU nearly every other day. It fixes everything for a short while, and then, early the next morning at wake-up or re-boot, there is no bluetooth. And, along with that, uncharacteristic fan running on an otherwise very quiet machine.
Perhaps related?: An Apple Hardware test shows an error in the second RAM slot. I removed that stick (we have two identical 500mb Crucial sticks) and the test came up fine. Then switching the sticks and the error is still in the second slot, so I'm thinking there is something wrong with the slot, not the RAM sticks.
Any suggestions before we trek to the Mac Store for help?
    iMac G5 1.8 GhZ   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Thanks, I think we'll have to do that. I removed the memory stick from the second slot, after actually switching the sticks, and this morning the little bluetooth mouse woke up the computer just fine. So the slot itself is very likely the problem. Still under Apple Care, so I hope it will be covered!

  • Weird error message. can anyone help.

i never had a problem burning from my lacie external cd burner. but today i got this error message.
the attempt to burn a disc failed. The device is not accessible, probably because it was removed.
anyone know what it could be? obvioulsy i didnt unplug the Firewire cable while it was burning. any help would be appreciated. thank you.

i reset my PRAM and SMU and now all is well again. sorry i didnt do that before i posted.

  • _DESCRegisterDockExtraClient failed Error All The Time

Can someone please tell me why I keep getting this error in my console log so often:
    _DESCRegisterDockExtraClient failed
My iMac stalls at startup when it does this so I immediately know for sure that I will see the error in the console log once the iMac has booted. It doesn't happen every time I startup. It seems like the iMac goes through "phases" where it will do this on every startup for a couple of days, then it doesn't do it at all for a week. I've checked the hardware and software with Disk Utility, TechTool Pro 5, checked all the RAM, reset PRAM, reset SMU - done everything in the book including starting up from the Leopard startup CD and running AHT. No problems reported.
Thanks to anyone who can tell me what this means and why it happens. Below is a search for the times it has happened in the past 5 weeks:

    HI Gerard,
Since this doesn't happen everytime you start the Mac, if you can, go to System Preferences/Accounts - Login Items. Delete any login items listed and restart the Mac.
And go to: MacintoshHD/Library/Startup Items. Delete any files there.
Try starting up with only the necessary external hardware. Disconnect printers / scanners... etc. and see if that makes a difference.
Try starting up in Mac OS X: Startup in Safe Mode
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck

  • IMac G5 won't boot, external interrupt error

I started my iMac G5 and did get the chime but it automatically goes into OF mode. The fans run loudly and it continously scrolls an "external interrupt" error with a bunch of jargon that goes by so fast I can't read it.
I tried resetting SMU, none of the bootup key sequences work, I can't boot from disk and it won't go into target disk mode. I've searched online "external interrupt" which has been an issue for others, but haven't found an answer to the problem yet.
I just tried resetting SMU again. This time I got the chime again, but now have a black screen. After about 30 seconds of nothing the fans start running and the screen remains black. Help please!

  • Errors in Keithley 237 sourcemeter GPIB drivers

I've just gotten back to working with our KE237 sourcemeter. I just discovered a couple of new bugs in the LV drivers posted here and at Keithley. It's a pretty unique old instrument, and we're lucky that they still make it, but it has some rough edges. The drivers are a free download, so when we find bugs, the best we can do is tell Keithley and share what we know. Caveat emptor. Beats starting from scratch.
In the Keith 237 Basic Config vi, The enumerated type control for integration time has the text for 60 hz line cycle, and 50 hz backwards. This is hard to spot, since the instrument only displays "LINE CYCLE INTEGRATION" on the front panel once this has been programmed. Happened to look at the actual string going out to the instrument and noticed it.
Easy to fix, just change the enum text labels for selection #2 to read 60HZ, and #3 to read 50HZ. So, if you've noticed that your instrument seems noisier running under Labview, this might be why.
While I'm at it, I also found a non-optimum feature of the SMU Device Errors query vi. It will overwrite any upstream error messages in the LV error cluster. For instance, if you call it twice along the communication chain connected by the error cluster, if it finds an illegal instruction error in the instrument in the first call, since the first call cleared the error condition in the unit, the later call sees nothing wrong and wipes the error cluster clean, even though the unit wasn't successfully configured. i sprinkle these error queries through my apps pretty liberally.
Easy fix is to add an outer case structure around what's already there to simply pass through upstream errors with no new action taken.

    Hi Bill,
Thanks for bringing this to our attention, it's great to have these workarounds online where they can help other users!
As you suggested, the best way to get these changes implemented is to contact Keithley directly. Because NI doesn't make these drivers, we can't modify them ourselves.

  • Imac G5 (pre isight). Mass Storage Error

I have an imac G5 (pre-isight). Using Tiger. Recently it has been playing up. Two main problems: starting up and waking after sleep mode.
    *Starting up issues*
There doesnt seem to be a consistent problem here. Sometimes it hangs on the grey apple screen, sometimes grey probitory sign screen. Sometimes it hangs on a black screen with white writing. On about the 10th to 20th time of rebooting, it seems to startup and work fine.
    *Sleep issues*
If I leave the computer to go into sleep mode, it tends to freeze in whatever application is open. Especially Safari.
I have tried numerous fixes. I've reset PRAM, done the SMU thing. Repaired and verified disk many times. Repaired and verified permissions. I've archived and installed and archived and erased. There's barely any software on here apart from the operating software and MS Office (legal). I'm using an apple keyboard (wired) and a wired mouse. There's no important info on here so am happy to wipe everything.
Finally i did a hardware test and received a "mass storage error" (only appeared for the extended test)...
    2STF/8/3: S-ATA Bus 0 –Master
Having looked up several forums i replaced the hard drive. (Made sure it was compatible, similar size and same specs as original). Reinstalled software and got all the latest updates. Seemed to be working quite well for a day or so, although there was a few 'permissions' error which seemed easily fixed.
Today i awoke the imac and it had frozen. Back to it's old tricks. Tried restarting and got grey screens, black screens etc. Repaired permissions. Ran another hardware test and getting the same error message about mass storage!
So if it's not the hard drive, what's wrong for my imac? Is it time to just dispose it?
Thanks in advance for any ideas you may have.

The recall ended many moons ago, and it's a capacitor problem, they all need replacing, those in the power supply as well, probably.
If you are handy with a soldering gun, have steady hands and are good at repairing electronics, you can do it yourself. Look at [welovemacs.com] or [synaptech.com] for parts and advice.

  • Using labview with GPIB to run Agilent 4156c: configuring SMU3/SMU4 triggers error message

    Hello,
I posted this also in the GPIB board, since it concerns labview I thought I'd post here too.
I'm trying to measure and plot drain curves for a JFET.  When trying to run it in labview I get the following error message:
    Error -1074000000
    Instrument reports:
    +181,"Illegal setup. Invalid command."
    +0,"No error"
I see other people have had this problem, I've reviewed all the previous posts and tried implementing the proposed solutions, to no avail.
Here's my configuration for when trying to run a sweep with Vgs = 0V:
    Unit          Vname          Iname                MODE                       FCTN
    SMU1      Vdd               Id                       V                               VAR1                              (drain)
SMU2      Vg                 Ig                       COMMON                 CONST                          (gate)
SMU3      Vs                 Is                       COMMON                 CONST                           (source)
I ran NIspy and it told me that the error message is generated after the channels are assigned immediately after configuring SMU3 or SMU4 (SMU3 & SMU4 will both trigger it).  If I try to disable SMU3 and configure SMU4 then SMU3 will show that it's disabled on the front panel and SMU4 will be configured and I get the error.  After I get the error message, If I go to the front panel I can manually run my sweep using the configurations labview sent to the instrument.  So labview seems to be configuring the channels properly but then it halts and gives me the error message.
I've tried configuring/disabling all unused channels and that didn't help.  I've also tried leaving the series resistance setting for each SMU as the default and assigning 0V to them, which didn't help either.
Any help or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello
I see that you posted this issue in the GPIB forum. I would recommend you to keep the conversation in that forum, because it is the specialized one for those subjects. Have a good day!

  • "Error in processing external entity reference" - why?

    -- FM 8.0p277, structured --
Saddened to see this morning that FM apparently decided against saving the work I did yesterday afternoon ... I can sympathise with the idea of not saving imperfect documents, but it could at least have warned me!
First attempt at saving this morning throws up the following message.
] XML Parser Messages (Document Prolog)
] Error at file P:\ACM\smu\ditabase.dtd, line 71, char 17, Message: Could not open external entity 'P:\ACM\smu\indexingDomain.ent'
] Parse error at line 71, char 0: Error in processing external entity reference
    * I certainly haven't created any .dtd, so where might this defective file have come from?
    * ditto for defining entities
So - what's the root problem, and how do I set about correcting it?
[ps] I get exactly the same message when I use the FM DITA menu to create a brand-new topic.

    Hey Niels...
That *shouldn't* be happening if you're using an unmodified FM8 install .. especially with creating a new file. It sounds like something has gone awry in your install. This will often happen if the doctype declaration in the XML file is defined as a system resource rather than with a public ID (but that shouldn't be happening unless you're creating the file with another editor or using a file created by someone else).
    Some things to check ..
    - Open the DITA > Options dialog .. is "DITA-Topic-FM" selected as the "Topic application"?
    - When you open a file from disk, do you select "DITA-Topic-FM" as the structure application? (You may not get an option to do so .. that's OK.)
    - Choose .. Structure Tools > Edit Application Definitions .. locate the XMLApplication node that is labeled "DITA-Topic-FM" .. below that you'll see entries for Template, DTD, and Read/write rules. Check that the files specifed actually exist at the locations specified (note that "$STRUCTDIR" maps to the FrameMaker/Structure/ folder).
    - Have you installed FrameMaker in a "nonstandard" location?
I may be missing something obvious, but this is probably a good start.
    Cheers,
    ...scott

  • PCIE Slot Check error

My Mac Pro (10.5.6) is crashing. Console shows a PCIE Slot Check error.
Is this something I can fix by starting over again with a fresh Leopard installation - or is it a hardware issue?
I can't get the Tech Tools CD sold with my computer to work will not load. I ordered the new Tech Tools Pro 5 - but it still is not here.
I am stuck - a big mac crashing over and over again.
What is the PCIE slot check - and what should I do? The Mac Pro is under warranty - but the closest Apple store is 120 miles away.
    Dick

I tried to load the Tech Tools disk that came with the MacPro - but it will not load. There is an update for the Tech Tools - but you have to have tech tools loaded first to use it - a catch 22.
I ordered Tech Tools Pro 5 - but it seems that they are very slow to ship.
I am waiting now with everything unplugged. What is "resetting the smu ? That is a new one to me - and I thought that I knew everything about Macs.
I am running out of ideas. I have a new 1TB HD also on order - and I had planned to put in a new HD - load a virgin set of Leopard with no other software and see what the MacPro does then.
I have 10 GB of Crucial RAM - and this machine has been working well for over 1 year. Only recently it has started to freeze and crash - and now it is constant.

  • Strange Error Message after prolonged inactivity

I have a PowerMac G5 (1.8 Ghz, 900mhz bus speed, with 1.5 GB of RAM installed.
If this machine is left running overnight, wheth it is asleep or not, by the next morning, the following error appears on the screen:
    obj~1/RELEASE_PPC
    MEMORY ACCESS EXCEPTION (1,0,0)
    Ethernet MAC Address: xxxxx
    IP address: xx.xx.xx.xx
    Waiting for remote debugger connection.
It appears to be a kernel panic of some kind; my theory based on the error message is that there is a memory leak on one of the memory modules. I have taken the following troubelshooting steps:
-Run ASD for PowerMac G5 and it passed all tests.
-Run Techtool Pro hardware tests, and it passed all tests.
-Searched for applicable firmware updates, and when run, I get a message that the firmware is up to date.
    -Reset SMU.
I have a second G5 that is starting to do the same thing. However, the one in question is doing this frequently, as in every night.

Actually, I believe I've got it troubelshot down to a software and not a hardware issue. I checked the kernell panic log and saw that Virex was consistently causing kernel panics before 8:00 AM. I removed Virex, and everything is fine.
I sort of inherited support on these G5's, so I am uncertain about the memory in them. I have not yet had reason to crack the cases on them. I want to eliminate software first.

  • Frequent need for smu reset and restart

What could be causing this? A little background: Everything had been fine for some time, than just recently have had problems with this iMac. I had 2 gigs of crucial ram that appeared to go bad in the last two weeks, evidenced by kernel panics. Replaced that with the old chip (512 megs) that I was able to get to work. Now from time to time, the computer will freeze and the fan noise will get very loud. This is solved by a restart. Frequently, especially after the computer has been shut down overnite, I need to do an smu reset (unplug the power cord for 10 seconds, plug it back in with the power button held down, then restart.)

I opened up the back of the computer. There are no obviously burnt or exploded capacitors, there is maybe one that is a little bulging on top. I then took apart the power supply and visually inspected the capacitors. There were no obviously burnt or exploded capacitors, there were two where the top was a little bit bulging.
I examined the LEDs on the motherboard. They seem fine.
I am still getting the odd kernel panic. I booted up from the install disk and attempted to do a disk repair and got an error saying "invalid key for thread record".
So I am really perplexed. This computer is nearly 5 years old, and while I would love to get it working reliably, I wonder if I am at the point of diminishing returns, in other words don't throw good money after bad. I have read that DiskWarrior might be useful, but that is $100. Power supply might be bad, hard drive might be going, and I'm not even sure if that is the entire extent of the problem!!!
