Smudge tool is not blending correctly.
Hi!
I have recently started to use Photoshop CS5 and have realized my smudge tool is not smudging like it should be,
Here is an example:
What I have learned is if I put a solid color under the art or line I am smudging, it returns as it should be, like so:
I really want to smudge lines without having to put a color under it.
I do use a tablet but I am having the same problems when I use a mouse. I also use a PC, not a Mac.
Please help! I've been trying to get rid of this problem for ages.
I can't reproduce what you're seeing with Photoshop CS5 (nor Photoshop CC). Whether or not a black dot is on a layer that's transparent or colored to me the result comes out the same (though I had forgotten how incredibly slow Photoshop CS5 was to Smudge).
What version of Photoshop CS5 do you have (in other words, do you have the latest update, 12.0.4)? Do Help - System Info inside Photoshop to find out. I kind of remember problems with Smudge that were tidied up in an update, but I don't remember the specific version. In any case, I tested here with 12.0.4.

The pencil tool is not working correctly
I've been making my drawing with the pencil tool obviously. After I make a stroke, I continue it with the last anchor point. But sometimes when I do that, the previous stroke disappears completley. Why is that?
That's because Illustrator has got a pretty lame understanding about what should happen when you continue a path in certain angles while the Modify selected paths option is turned on inside the Pencil Tool options.
You can disable that option but I can imagine that this is not what you're really looking for. -
Tools bar not working correctly!
Whenever I click on a tool, it auto expands, making it impossibly slow to work having to constantly select the tool I want out of the drop down.
This happens for all tools that are expandable and have other options, such as the brush, eraser, paintbucket, and lasso tools.
I have tried a tools reset, and a preferences reset.
Please help!!Check your OS double click speed setting. Make sure it is not set to zero.
Other than that, the only other thing I've seen cause this is mouse assistive utilities that change a single click event into a double click, or click and hold. -

I have not heard of that specific error, but I have had issues with some of the newer Java releases. Check to see if you are on a version of Java newer than 1.6.0_17. But then I am on SP2 not SP3, so that may not matter. Still, the issue sounds similar to some I have come across when the Java version is not compatible.
I had upgraded my Java version without thinking it would matter and spent days trying to figure out what was wrong. Uninstalling the new version and reverting back to an older version was the only thing that fixed the problem.

My smudge tool isn't working correctly like it should in Photoshop cs5. Can someone help me?
Heres an example. :When i do that, the image just messes up, My intention , for example. say i wanted to do a makeup edit, and i wanted to the picture to be more realistic so i added black around the noise and used the smudge tool to blend in the mark to look like it was drawn in a bit. Instead of doing that the smudge tool just goes one straight direction just as in the picture above.

I'm running Windows 8, Premiere CC 2014 with two monitors. The eye dropper tool (color picker tool) isn't working correctly. It is selecting colors that are not the colors being hovered over. I've reasearched and see solutions to the problem when occurring with Mac, but do not see a solution for Windows. When I disconnect the second monitor, the eye dropper tool works correctly (as described by Mac users). I deleted any profiles for the montors that weren't the same, and still having the issue. I've also tried putting the source monitor on the second monitor, and tried sampling color from there... same result.

Blender do not display correctly after upgrading xorg
Yesterday, I do a pacman -Syu
and then found that blender do not display correctly.
The panels are not shown and the working area is cut into 2 halves of different colors.
Then I check /var/cache and found that some X components were upgraded.
My graphic card is ATi mobility Radeon 7500

Also, when I run blender from a term it says 'Compiled with Python version 2.5' (no error messages).
It has been a few days since I pacman -Syu'd, so I'll do that and report back if it fixes things. -
Certain websites do not load correctly, the webpage sometimes does not display. Upgraded to current version of Java, this did not solve the problem. The most blatant thing I noticed is that when I hit the plus button to open a new tab, the page that displays displays my nine most favorite websites, all nine have descriptions, but only two or three display the actual web page.
I also have hotmail and when I try to load some pages directly from the e-mail I get the message Javascript needs to be enabled.Are you using any cleanup software like CCleaner that might cleanup the cache?

PS6 blur and smudge tools malfunctioning
I've had this problem for some time and have yet to find a solution.
Several months ago my blur and smudge tools in Photoshop 6 suddenly began malfunctioning. Any pixel blurred with one of these tools is turned black if the resulting pixel is at less than 100% opacity. It only effects the blur and smudge tools, painting with a 50% opacity brush for example does not result in black pixels. I'm a veteran Photoshop user of many years and am very familiar with all tool options, this is something that literally happened overnight, and permanently. Here's an example image if you need help visualizing the problem:
I've tried wiping PS6 from my PC and freshly installing it in hopes of resolving the issue, but it doesn't appear in my Add/Remove Programs list in control panel and there is no uninstall.exe in the Photoshop folder so the only thing I can do is delete the Photoshop program folder. This of course fails to remove whatever hidden registry files are on my computer though, as evidenced by all my preferences still being intact when I reinstall. I have individually reset the preferences for the blur and smudge tools, as well as deleted the whole Photoshop preferences file by holding Shift+Ctrl+Alt on startup, neither of which has removed the problem. This seems to be a corrupted tool function, not a preference issue.
I've also installed PS6 on an old computer to make sure it isn't a problem with a source file on the CD, and sure enough the blur and smudge tools function correctly.
If anyone else has dealt with this or a similar issue, I'd much appreciate any solution or wisdom you can impart from the experience. I'm convinced something is corrupted in one of my PS program files since I've tried it on a second computer with no problems. I'm sure reformatting would fix it, but...ugh.

Here's another sample for anyone else following this thread. I think it better illustrates the problem. This is a picture I did in the past using the blur and smudge tools for shading. The girl's nose is on a separate layer. I used the blur tool to soften the side of her nose and the smudge tool to pull at the edges of the layer to blend it with the rest of her skin, which worked correctly as seen in the first panel. The next two panels show what happens when I try those same techniques now with the same tools. -

We had tried on multiple operating system and also with latest updates done , same issue persists ,current version is 14.2.1 x64 , Photoshop stops responding once brush size in increased about 1000px.

Ok who messed with my smudge tool?!
For almost a decade, I've been using Photoshop for digital painting. I use a very simple approach with round brushes. The smudge tool has always allowed me to paint fast. At a low strength, it USED TO do nice, soft blending even if I had a hard edge brush. At a high strength, it USED TO let me define clean edges very quickly.
In fact, at 100% with strength set to pressure, I could do soft blending or define edges with no adjustments to settings. Or I could only set size to pressure to pull out long strands of hair or blades of grass, with a perfect taper.
NOW, it's more like pushing pixels around in the liquify filter...WHY? I can't do smooth blends or sharp edges the same way at all! And I certainly can't pull out fine lines for hair, grass, etc... It's like the smudge tool in Sketchbook Pro...yuck
This change has screwed up the most important digital painting tool in my arsenal. PLEASE FIX!It's behavior has been changed since CS6! see: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1021785
At 100%, it does not work right, and needs to be fixed. It is user friendly to slide quickly to the right for 100%. So much so that I didn't even notice 99% works!
At 99% and below, it seems ok. However, I will have to test side by side with CS5.
In the attached img, 100% does't do much. The marks you can see were applied with heavy pressure. The fine lines at 99% were with very little pressure, and you can see how I use it for hair, etc.
Please report this bug. As a long time Photoshop user, this isn't a change for the better. That said, I love PS and am thrilled I get to paint tomorrow! Been staring at too much html & css... -
Clone Stamp Tool and smudge tool issue
iMac 21.5"; new on 12/14/2011; OS Version 10.7.3; 2.7GHz Intel Core i5; AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB.
Two and Three Layer, all layers are copies of background layer, plus two adjustment layers, 8 Bit file:
Clone Stamping directly on image layer with Background layer directly below and with copy of Background layer directly below.
Intuos 4 tablet and pen.
Clone Stamp tool Setup:
Layer Adjustment parameter set to either This Layer and Below or All Layers.
All other parameters at default.
Using simple soft brush.

The bug: Clone Stamp too will only affect the layer selected to do the actual cloning.
Tried it in every configuation possible without adjust the tool defaults, and no layers below will get the cloning corrections or stamping.Welcome back gang.
Made a couple new discoveries while double checking.
Again, the same four layer setup: Background-Background copy-HSB Adj layer-Levels Adj layer.
The problem replicates with the Adj layers clipped or not.
The key is any tweak in the Adj layers will cause the issue.
Any Adj layer tweak seems to get exaggerated when smudging on a layer.
For example, increasing the gamma or center slider in the Levels box will cause all bright pixels to go white and darker pixels to go black.
I do not know the threshold luminance pixel value but I would guess it is at 128/128.
Modest tweaks to the Adj layer, for example raising the gamma slider to 1.20 will cause the smudge to posterize or turn white.
Tweaking the HSB Saturation slider to +12 will cause color posterization.
Counter to what I had stated upstream, any setting of the Smudge tool will cause this to happen.
Also, as said upstream, the performance goes down such that the spinning balls appear frequently.
In other words, it does not appear to be a 1-to-1 relationship of tweaks made in the Adj layer to the effect of the Smudge tool.
My guess is that the Sample All Layers option is multiplying the color and luminance values fo the layers together.
Plus, it was probably designed to do so but I do not think it was to be so pronounced.
Still amazes me that the situation never occurred or did I notice it until now, and the issue exists in CS5 too.
When did PS add the Sample All Layers option to the Smudge tool?

Hey there, I'm an two week Illustrator [CS4] newbie and well I haven't been able to find this tool [and its in Photoshop 7...]. The Warp and other tools are cool, but not the same thing, so is there a smudge tool at all is what I'm wondering?
No, there isn't. There couldn't really be one - smudging is a pixel operation whereas AI is still a vector graphics program. You can deform the paths and contours and in turn this will affect rasterization, and you can use gradients, meshes and blends for soft transitions, but that's as good as it gets. True blending of pixels is only possible in PS.

I'm not sure what is going on, but the brush for the Smudge Tool is apparently gone and it leaves these choppy marks instead of its smooth blending, no matter WHAT I do to the brush. It also has this really annoying habit now of starting off with a dark spot that does get blended out, but it never did that before and the setting is on normal.
Help in resetting the brush? What do I do to fix that?
Thanks!!!In the top tool bar far left side is an icon that looks like the tool being used. Right click on it to choose to reset the menu. An alternative is click on that same icon then in that dialog box is a cog wheel icon, click it will bring up a larger menu, you can choose reset tool there as well.
