Smudge tool with sampled Brush Tip behaves wrong on 100% strength in CS6

Hey everyone. I'm using CS6 beta on OSX 10.6.8 on Macbook Pro at home and Imac at work.
I used two smudge brushes: one is round and one is sampled from an image. All controls are turned off.
Here's an example on Smudge tool in CS5. Both round and sampled acts the same at 100% strength:
Here are round and sampled Smudge Tools in CS6:
Next: Smudge Tool on 99% Strength (Sampled tip)
CS5:
CS6:
As you can see, on 99% Smudge acts the same in CS5 and CS6 and on 100% Smudge in CS6 acts wrong.
Sergey.

It looks like this is an issue when using 100% Strength and a Sampled tip that has been changed in size from what it was sampled at. If you click the Restore to original size button next to the size readout in the Brush Tip Shape pane of the Brush panel, it does not appear to encounter the problem, and as you noted values other than 100% do not show the problem. Thanks for reporting this.

  • Extreme lag on mixer and smudge tools with "all layers" checked

Running Photoshop CC 64, Win7 x64 on an i7-3820 based machine with 32GB of ram, 256GB SSD, several 2TB drives and a GeForce GTX 650 Ti 1GB 16X video card.
Running the latest non-beta WHQL drivers for the video card,
    i have photoshop set to:
    use graphics acceleration,
    drawing mode advanced,
    opencl.
When I'm using the mixer brush and with the brush set to sample all layers, depending on brush size, I experience a large lag in rendering. When doing this, my CPU usage is around 10% and disk usage is also low so I'm assuming the graphics card is the bottleneck here.
Images are from a 21MP canon 5dMK II, 8 bit files. I can replicate the problem with a single background layer and mixing/smudging on a 2nd transparent layer set to use all layers.
    Any thoughts?

I think is has more to do with the process then compute power.  Its not something that lens itself to parallel processing that can use multiple processors and GPUs.  Brush size does increase the amount of data the need to be sampled and mixed in a repetitive sequential process. You will find the same thing happens with other tools that don't use your Video GPU like the smudge tool.  Its lag may even be greater then large mixer brush tool. Each recursion take some time. You make quick strokes with large tips brushes with these types of tools your going to have lag.   It not a simple process of laying down a single color over a path. In the real world its a physical process that happens in real time.  It take time to simulate that physical process digitally. Burn, Dodge, Blur and Sharpen brush tools I would think will also lag.

  • Size/Angle Jittering and Scattering with a "brush tip" in full color?

Is there any way to emulate the options available for a custom brush tip created from an image, yet still keep all the color information? I know this can't be done with a regular brush tip, but is there another way to pull it off other than copy/paste/rotate/shrink the source image over and over again?
If it makes any difference, I'm using Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended.

No. By definition brushes are just opacity masks of a kind. Color information is not retained. What you want to do is much better doen in an animation program by using frame accumulation effects or particles to create trails of images. Another option would be Illustrator's art brushes and symbols, but of course those have limited blending options.

  • Is there a way to use a hotkey to rotate brush tip angle?

I would like to program my Intuos Touch to be able to rotate the brush tip angle with the touch wheel. But I am unaware if that is an available feature at this time.

There was a discussion in the Scripting Forum about changing some Brush parameters via Script a while back.
If I remember correctly the angle could be changed only for round brush tips, not for custom/sampled brush tips and as this preceded erodible and  bristle tips those would likely also disqualify.
Edit: This means I don’t know a default method to rotate a Brush via Keyboard Shortcut.

  • CS5 Smudge Tool no longer smudges, have reset prefs

    Hi!
I have been pulling my hair out trying to figure why the smudge tool in cs5 no longer behaves like a smudge tool when trying to smudge from a transparent area if the layer into the image part of the layer..
I have deleted my tool preset and the whole adobe preferences file, i also am sure i don't have fingerpainting on or anything like that..and nothing seems to work!
the smudge tool acts correctly when smudging from within the boundaries of the pixel area, but if i try to smudge a layer that has any transparency around it, and i wish to smudge into the pixelated areas from outside the boundaries of the image (starting from transparency into the image) it just doesn't work anymore..
(say i use the pen tool to cut off the arm of a person and make a new layer using the selection, so now i just have the free floating arm with transparency all around it..if i  smudge from within the image outward to the transparent area, it works fine, but if i try to reverse that, and smudge from the transparent area into the image, it just does nothing!
CS4 smudge tool still works fine, as does every other function in cs5..except for this!
    Can anyone help me?
    it would be much appreciated!

Before you resort to such drastic measures.
    1. Trash the preferences again, just to be sure.
    2. If you have a 64 bit os, check both versions of cs5.
That is the 32 bit version and 64 bit version.
See if both have the same problem.
    3. If you use a tablet, try unplugging it and use the mouse.
    4. Open GL
If you have open gl enabled in cs5, go to preferences>performance
        and turn it off.
    5. Video card
Check that you have the latest drivers for your video card.

  • PS cs6 13.01 no fix for smudge tool

here's the difference for me- cs6 seems to act differently than cs5, which lets you "draw" with the smudge tool- cs5 and 6 feel about the same until
the smudge tool is at %100 strength, then cs6 feels like it's working MUCH harder to keep up.
gpu acceleration on or off, no effect,
    mac pro
    ATI Radeon HD 4800
problem not fixed in latest cs6 update

    Here's an objective test:
Make an image 3000 x 2000 pixels (e.g., resize a digital camera image).  Zoom it to fit on screen.
Select the Smudge Tool, set the brush and options as shown here:
Set the status display at the lower-left corner of the document window to measure Timing:
Now click the Smudge Tool once but don't drag in the upper-left corner.
Now hold the shift key down and click down in the lower-right corner.
The Smudge Tool will be stroked in a diagonal across the image, and when it's done the time will be displayed in the status area.
    Here's what I got:
    Strength: 50%
    Photoshop CS6:  5.8 seconds.
    Photoshop CS5:  6.7 seconds
    Strength: 100%
    Photoshop CS6: 3.2 seconds.
    Photoshop CS5: 2.9 seconds

  • Was the Smudge Tool Changed?

In Photoshop CS5 and under, the smudge tool at 100% Strength would drag pixels without smudging/blurring/mixing, creating this cool painting effect. Customizing the smudge tool with a bit of a textured brush shape and some scattering, with 100% smudging Strength would create this amazing painterly effect, but now in Photoshop CS6 the 100% strength does not work. In fact, it works much worse than 99%.
As you can see, at 99% strength, the smudge does less blurring, and more dragging, which is almost as close as Photoshop CS5's 100% smudging strength( it hardly ever blurred or mixed, 100% would only drag in CS5)
100% on CS6 does considerably worse dragging, and alot of blurring, and seems to only be a step above 90%, which blurs and mixes more.
I'm not sure if this is a bug, or if this was an intentional edit to the smudging tool. The smudging tool in the past was completely fine, and now I can't use my smudging tool presets because they do not create the same effects they did when I created them back in CS5.

    Hi there,
I have the same issue going on since Photoshop CS6, I am still on Photoshop CS5 at work, because of that exact issue. I don't know why this problem has been ignored by Adobe and carried on even to the latest CC 2014 subscription.
Apparently not many people use the smudge tool at 100% pressure. As a concept artist I practically use this feature almost on a daily base and I find it extremely useful - feel free to visit my portfolio: http://www.inetgrafx.com to see the smudge tool in action :-)
It would be very much appreciated if a developer could fix this tool as shown below:
in short: it works perfectly fine in CS5 and I wished I had exactly the same functionality back again for a future version of Photoshop,
For right now my work around is the use of a hard round brush and all settings disabled - maybe that would help someone who experiences the same.
Thanks a lot and best regards,

  • Siebel 8.1 mobile Client with sample db not launching IE

I have downloaded the Siebel 8.1 Client, tools and sample db from oracle edelivery.
I could successfully install tools and login to it.
I installed client successfully. When logging on to the client with sample db, the uid/pwd is authenticated and the IE is launched. At this point I am getting "the page cannot be displayed" also the address is just showing "http:///"
I have enabled IIS in my local system.
No Siebel Servers, just client and tools with sample db.
Please provide me a solution to this.
    Thanks,
    Koushik

Thanks for the reply Chetan. I did a few re-installs myself to get the gateway verification working. The fact I had to do that was a real shame and reminded me of the old Siebel 98/99 days when we did re-installs "just because it worked". I thought the Siebel stack was beyond that but I digress...
I have made it a little bit past the original issue by looking closer at the environment variables set by the siebenv.sh script. If you run this shell script in the gateway server directory you will get a bunch of bad merant ODBC libray paths set in environment variables. It appears that those paths are the cause of the "C101 Cannot start common library." I validate this by running the siebenv.sh shell script in the siebel server installation path and then overriding the ODBCINI setting to refer to the .odbc.ini file in the gateway server directory tree instead of the siebel server tree. After all, the siebel server has not been configured yet since it is a new database installation and the .odbc.ini in the directory tree is empty.
So while I get by the original error I now get an error when the wizard attempts to run the sqlgen script as part of the overall .ucf file creation process. I have to try and work this a bit further but it appears that some of the dynamic variables are not getting populated by the wizard into the shell script. I have no idea why this is happening but will keep trying to figure it out when I have time. With any luck at all an answer will appear on this forum or metalink3.

  • Smudge Tool Double Brush Bug Issue

I have a very strange problem that just appeared in my copy of Adobe Photoshop CS5 Version 12.0 x32
Out of nowhere I've noticed that when I use the Smudge Tool my brush will randomly have 2 points instead of one.  I've looked all through my brush settings and everything is normal in the defaul brush settings.  Yet when I go to smudge something I get the normal smudge point and then 10 or so pixels away another Smudge Brush at about 50% the size of the normal brush is smudging my image as well.  This makes the smudge tool basically useless and I seem to be the only one who has this bug.
Has anyone had a similar bug and is there any solution besides reinstalling?

I check Autodesk Sketchbook Pro and they don't have a smudge tool or anything that looks like it. But their app is really impressive for a company specialised in 3D. I might spend more time on it. Infinite Painter, a bit buggy and slow, have now a move tool that does something "similar" if you play with the parameters. But if you press too much it acts like a pinch. Thing is their move tool seems to blend colors without darkening them... their might be a way !
So of the 3 drawing apps that I have, none have a smudge tool. Which is scary. It seems that transparency is definitely a complex (nothing is impossible to code) thing to code. I'm sure the brains behind Unreal Engine would say it's doable.
Let's wait and hope. But without that, the future of drawing apps on Android is seriously compromised.

  • Ok who messed with my smudge tool?!

For almost a decade, I've been using Photoshop for digital painting.  I use a very simple approach with round brushes.  The smudge tool has always allowed me to paint fast.  At a low strength, it USED TO do nice, soft blending even if I had a hard edge brush.  At a high strength, it USED TO let me define clean edges very quickly.
In fact, at 100% with strength set to pressure, I could do soft blending or define edges with no adjustments to settings.  Or I could only set size to pressure to pull out long strands of hair or blades of grass, with a perfect taper.
NOW, it's more like pushing pixels around in the liquify filter...WHY?  I can't do smooth blends or sharp edges the same way at all!  And I certainly can't pull out fine lines for hair, grass, etc...  It's like the smudge tool in Sketchbook Pro...yuck
This change has screwed up the most important digital painting tool in my arsenal.  PLEASE FIX!

It's behavior has been changed since CS6!  see:  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1021785
At 100%, it does not work right, and needs to be fixed.  It is user friendly to slide quickly to the right for 100%.  So much so that I didn't even notice 99% works!
At 99% and below, it seems ok.  However, I will have to test side by side with CS5.
In the attached img, 100% does't do much.  The marks you can see were applied with heavy pressure.  The fine lines at 99% were with very little pressure, and you can see how I use it for hair, etc.
Please report this bug.  As a long time Photoshop user, this isn't a change for the better.  That said, I love PS and am thrilled I get to paint tomorrow!  Been staring at too much html & css...

  • Brush and smudge tools painfully slow in CS5

I use CS5 on quad core 2.26ghz macpro with 32 gb RAM.  It's a clean system, both cs5 and os10.6.6 updated.  No extra plug-ins or fonts.   I do have an extra video card installed for my raid 5 system.   Only use photoshop on this computer.   Using the healing brush or smudge tool is painfully slow.  also moving layers around are slow.   I work on 10-15GB files.   My assistant works on my old G5 with 8gb of ram and since it's not an intel he's still working in CS2.   Using the healing brush on a 4GB file is faster on the G5 in CS2 than on my Quadcore in CS5.  What is going on here?  how can I speed things up?
I have cache levels set to 7, cache tile sice to 1024.

i have found that any mac pro i use - not all set up the same- if they have a nvidia card after a few hours of working there will be a slowdown of painting, cloning, smudging and screen redraw. I always have open gl off. adobe engineers have been helping now and then but no one has a solution. on the windows forum someone reportedly adjusted their video card settings to fix it. but on a mac we have to option to do that - that i know of. it is a big problem for me when using CS5 that I use CS3 when possible.

  • Smudge tool or brush

I recently read an article where a person took a photo and changed it into a painting using a smudge tool or brush. Does this smudge tool come in photo shop elements 11? If not does it come in some other photo shop software? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes its nested with the blur and sharpen tools.
Press the R key repeatedly to cycle through the three tool options.

  • How to reset the BRUSH of the Smudge Tool for CS6 Mac? Accidentally changed the brush, it now leaves choppy marks when all other settings were the same. Please help!!!

I'm not sure what is going on, but the brush for the Smudge Tool is apparently gone and it leaves these choppy marks instead of its smooth blending, no matter WHAT I do to the brush. It also has this really annoying habit now of starting off with a dark spot that does get blended out, but it never did that before and the setting is on normal.
Help in resetting the brush? What do I do to fix that?
    Thanks!!!

In the top tool bar far left side is an icon that looks like the tool being used. Right click on it to choose to reset the menu. An alternative is click on that same icon then in that dialog box is a cog wheel icon, click it will bring up a larger menu, you can choose reset tool there as well.

  • Why is Photoshop CS6 extremely slow with the brush tool using Wacom pen?

Could my wacom tablet be the issue?  The psd processor spins not stop until I pick up the wacom mouse and click on an adjacent layer then back to the layer I was working on.  Then the wacom pen  work with the brush tool.  This seems to happen when every time I  pick up the pen and go back to the brush  tool.

First, sorry it took so long to reply.  Have been a bit swamped.  What I mean by the psd processor, is the balls that rotate kind of like the SBDO when the app is executing a paint stroke.  So I tried your suggestion, mad a new file 7w x 5d at 72pi, set the brush to 25px at 100% hardness and made a stroke with the wacom pen.  It worked fine.  The issue is working in large files say around letter size at 300dpi or large format graphics for trade shows at 150dpi.  These files can range anywhere from 6ft x 8ft high  to 16ft w x 10 ft h for an example.  So painting in a channel mask or retouching using the brush tool in airbrush mode is painfully slow.  I've found that while this little psd icon is spinning, if I take the wacom mouse, click on an adjacent layer then go back to the layer I was working on and resume with the airbrush, the problem subsides.  It seems this spinning thing happens when I initially start using the brush on a layer or layer mask.  Do you get what I'm trying to explain?

  • Problem with pen & brush tools

    Hi,
I've been at this for all day. I reset preferences and reinstalled but it didn't help.
I select either pen or brush tool, set the brush size to lets say 16pt, choose a default width profile and set the brush as basic. As i draw the line/make the anchor point the settings are reset to 1pt, normal width profile and sometimes 2pt oval. I can reselect the line and apply the settings then, as i click on the artboard the settings remain and if i try to draw a new line the settings are reset again.
    I'm using cs5 on mac.
    Any ideas?

    You can't.
You can not have an oval caligraphy brush with a width profile assigned.
There's no workaround for that. It simply can not be done. If you want a profile, you can't use a caligraphy brush. If you want an oval, you can't assign a profile.
There is no way to set up a specific brush how you are asking. The two features are conflicting. The purpose of an oval brush (or any caligraphy brush) is to allow you to alter the width of the brush stroke as you draw. The purpose of a profile is to alter the width of a stroke as well. You can not have two items trying to fight for the same appearance. It's like asking how can I draw a rectangle with no fill but looks green in the middle. You can't.
I believe what you need to do to achieve the appearance you want is to simply draw a path, set a profile, then manually adjust the profile with the width tool if needed. You can get this to look almost identical to an oval caligraphy brush if desired. Which is why you can't do both at the same time.
