Snapping limitation in CS4

in Illustrator CS3, when smart guides were on, i could click and while holding down the mouse drag an object over any point on a path to "activate" the smart snapping features. then i could move down to another location and when my cursor moves into alignment (horizontally or vertically) with the anchor point i had hovered over, it will snap to a smart guide.
the new smart guide snapping adds the ability to snap to the midpoint of objects (handy) but seems to eliminate the ability to activate any random point on a path as a snapping guide. is there another way to get this working again?
hope i'm clear here...

Thanks Mike, but it still doesn't seem to work the way i need/like it to. it's tough to explain well but i'll try again. Currrently, CS4 gives you green snapping guides that pop on-screen when the object you're dragging around comes into alignment with the outer bounding box or midpoint of another object. that's it. what if i want to grab an object on a particular point and then align it vertically with a particular anchor point on another object and have those green snapping guides indicate when i'm in alignment? I could do that in CS3 and it seems way more flexible in that way.
I think i would like a preference switch to allow me to choose between CS3 smart guides and CS4. Often CS4's snapping throws up way too many snapping indicators when there are many objects on the page. CS3 wasn't as confusing.

  • Snap function in CS4 After Effect (simple Question)

    Windows 7 Ultimate
    After Effect CS4
    Gentlemen .
A very simple question, since i am more of a Premiere person, it seems like I am stuck with this problem and the problem is
In Premiere its called "Snap" its a tool or function that automatically finds the connecting or starting or ending of a clip.
For example if I have 3 channels of video and I have many cuts, by dragging the edge of a video , it tells or shows me when they are connected
I tried to search , all I find is "Snap to Guides" which in not doing what I want .
If you need more explanation, plz let me know , else hope you can help.
    Thanks.
Btw. in Premiere the Snap looks like a "Magnet"

To help you with that we need to know something about your composition settings and the settings you picked in the output module. Anything else would just be a guess. My guess is that you're using some HD footage from a non square pixel aspect ratio format and rendering to the same size. If you pick a square pixel HD format (1080 or 720 both have square pixel frame sizes in the default composition settings) and you put your HDV, DVCProHD, AVCHD, Mpeg non square footage in a square pixel comp it will fit and render out correctly.

  • Limiting Bridge CS4 search

My earlier post has been answered but when I did that Bridge crashed...which is not surprising as my computer has been in use for a couple of days with many windows and programs open. So, I rebooted.
In strting Bridge up again and to search my entire drive for images worked fine until I noticed that it was searching and displaing each and every file on my hard drive. I only need the image files. I have been looking to as how I limit it to just image files but am having no luck.
When it brought up all the images the first time, and then crshed, it looked like they were all just image files....unless further down it was searching for others.
    Any pointers would be appreciated!
    JIm

I saw where once all the files are "discovered" you can filter out what you want to see.
As far as your second message, Barbara (and thank you) not sure what "lockfiles" are and haven't sorted that out by searching in Google. I am still working with Snow Leopard (afraid to upgrade, did on one computer and having probs). I had two com.adobe.bridge.plist files which I deleted. I am looking for the folder containing saved state files but haven't found yet.
In looking into how I repair permissions, I found this:
    Tips & Warnings
Disk Utility for Snow Leopard can only verify or repair permissions for Mac OS X 10.6.x disks. Use Leopard to verify or repair permissions for Mac OS X 10.5.
I have SL 10.5.8. Out of Luck? I doubt I even have a Leopard disc for this June '09 MBP.
    Thank you for your help!

  • Save for Web and Devices - vertical limited to 8192px

I'm not sure if this is a bug/limitation in Photoshop CS4, or of the file format itself, but I suspect the former.
I've got a .gif 18x8888 (a sprite used in the YUI Treeview component) and PS refuses to export it other than by forcing a resize down to 17x8192. I've had to resort to File/Save As then Open/Save in Preview to get the filesize down to what it should be (what *is* that extra metadata PS saves inside .gifs?!)
Anyone else hit this? It seems pretty limiting considering digital photos are nearing those sorts of resolutions. Same limitation when exporting as a .png by the way.
    Cheers,
    Mike

It's definitely a bug/limitation in CS4. I've got a perfectly valid 18x8888 .gif image created via Preview (and also ImageMagick). Jim: you're correct that previous versions handled them ok.
    @Nini
Although I agree that it would be questionable to upload a digital photo of that size, it's a very valid technique, used widely across modern JavaScript frameworks. For this particular image used by the Treeview, it means 1x8k HTTP request, rather than 16 or 17 slightly smaller HTTP requests for individual images. The technique improves performance through both bandwidth and browser resource savings. Google "CSS sprites" for reference.

  • Save for web greyed out, CS4, 10.5.8 (worked on 10.4)

I have been on the phone with Adobe for over 2 hours...I have reinstalled several times, and even used the cleaning software that they suggested I download and use last night before I called.  He's currently checking to see if they can email me the "Save for Web" plug in.
We have deleted the preferences for Photoshop.  We have updated.
NO Save for Web folder to be found anywhere.
Any advice would be most appreciated.

NO Save for Web folder to be found...
Can you find your Adobe Save for Web preference file? (user>Library>Preferences>Adobe Save For Web 11.0 Prefs)
If so, toss that in the trash (or put a tilda ~ in front of its name) and try relaunching Photoshop.
Also make sure the Photoshop application is installed in the right place: from Finder Go>Applications>Adobe Photoshop CS4 (folder)> Adobe Photoshop CS4 (application)
And I assume the file your are trying to SFW is not a 32bit per channel file? Can't remember SFW limitations on CS4, but be sure by trying it on a 8bit per channel RGB image.

  • FAQ: How do I make Photoshop run faster, or How do I increase performance?

    Why doesn't Photoshop run faster?
There are many factors that contribute to the responsiveness of Photoshop. From hardware to software, there a nearly an infinite number of combinations that can boost or hinder Photoshop as it tries to work. Considering factors like how much RAM you have only begins to scratch the surface. Then you have to look at how fast the RAM is and how fast the motherboard will be in supporting it. A computer can only run as fast as its slowest components. Additionally, the hardware resources must be split between all of the running applications. And while you may only be running a web browser at the same time as Photoshop, what about all of the applications running in the background? Security software such as antivirus remains hidden, operating behind the scenes, but it still takes up CPU cycles and RAM. And what about the files you are working with? What are their pixel dimensions? File size on disk? Number of layers, smart objects, styles, and adjustments?
To start, though, you must make sure you meet or exceed the minimum system requirements:

What about Photoshop taking advantage of the power of my video card?
With each new release of Photoshop, it will take more advantage of you GPU (Graphic Processing Unit), which can process display information much faster than your CPU. You video card also has its own separate RAM (known as VRAM) for storing this information. However, not all video cards are equal, even if they have the same amount of VRAM. There are different display processing technologies that all video cards do not have access to. These include technologies like OpenGL, OpenCL, and Shader Model. And these technologies have different versions that your video card may or may not have.

  • How do I save a large banner design (108" X 18") in PSD or PDF?

I design custom banners which include both text and images and have no problem saving my files as PSDs or PDFs as long as I stay under 96" wide.  The minute I go wider, CS4 no longer gives me all my normal options, instead it gives me TIF, PSB, Photoshop RAW, or DICOM.  I usually try to give my banner production house files that are not undersized as I don't want to have all the edges aliased and jaggy.  Especially photographic portions of the banner.  Is there a size limitation with CS4 Photoshop regarding saving in "normal" file formats?  Typically I give my production house 300dpi PDFs and it works out great.
Thanks in advance for any/all advice.
    Mike

    Chris, Mike, Gator...
Thanks for your input.  Mike... you're essentially saying I should downsize the artwork slightly and then reload into AI and convert to PDF after resizing.  I have the full CS4 package although I confess that as a 15-year CorelDraw user, I never got into AI LOL... and now that I'm retired and doing these projects to keep the grey matter sharp... I don't know if I have the courage to try and convert my brain from CorelDraw to AI.  But anyhow, your idea sounds like a do-able approach, certainly worth trying.
Gator... I honestly don't know for sure.  I know they want artwork in 300dpi, and it should be in PDF or AI or CDR (CorelDraw) formats.  And as much as I like CD for Vector work, Iequally love PS for general work... in fact, I probably use PS more than CD these days.  I never bothered much with Corel's PhotoPaint even though I've been to Corel Seminars in the past.  I will talk to my guys and see what they do before printing.

  • Uninstalling 32 bit version of Photoshop CC

Why do you have to install both 32 & 64 bit versions of programs?  In InDesign & Illustrator, you can uninstall the 32 bit versions using the Windows uninstaller but it won't let you do this in Photoshop; would be good if you were given the choice when installing to save your download quota and drive space.

I would recommend reviewing the following documents:

  • Why did AAM install 2 Photoshop Versions?

Two weeks ago, I downloaded and installed Photoshop CC on my Win 7 PRO, PC, desktop with no problems.  Today, I attempted to install Photoshop CC on my W 7 Pro laptop which had the desk version of CS6 loaded.  I did the following:  deactivated CS6; uninstalled CS6 (I had a boxed copy as a backup); logged in to Creative Cloud; Reinstalled Application Manager; downloaded and installed Photoshop CC.
The above installation installed both the 32bit and 64bit versions on my 64bit laptop. Both versions run and are the 13.1.2 version.  Control panel > uninstall shows only one CS6 icon.  ( I did an uninstall and two icons appeared and uninstalled both versions. I then reinstalled PS CC). The 32bit version is in the program files (x86) directory and the 64bit version is in the program files directory as expected.
I would appreciate any thoughts on why this happened.  Is it my process, my machine, or an Adobe quirk?
Can I manually remove the 32bit version without creating further problems?
    Thanks

Marv I would recommend leaving both applications installed.  Mylenium's response already goes a long way to address why you want both the 32-bit and 64-bit version to be available.  I would also recommend reviewing the following documents for additional details.

  • Importing .avi file into premier pro CS3 without losing quality

I have used CAMStudio to capture datalogging on my screen. The file size is 1280 x 800 pixels with a frame rate of 200 frames/second. I have tried using virtual dub and many other programs to create an avi file that I can import into premier without losing quality. None of this has worked. I have tried using the forum post http://forums.adobe.com/message/2060872#2060872 but this didn't work for me either. If anyone has a simple solution for this problem I would greatly appreciate it. Even if anyone could suggest a different screen capture program the will smoothly import into premiere without losing quality.

Very recently, Jeff Bellune posted his workflow for Camtasia/CamStudio material. I'd do a Search for "Techsmith" then filter on this forum and on People = Jeff Bellune. IIRC, he basically updated Dan Isaacs' suggestions. I do not think that his techniques were limited to CS4, but could be wrong.
If I can find that post, I'll add the link here. Actually, I need to make sure that I have that link in an article that I did on Camtasia/CamStudio workflow elsewhere.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Epson 4870 not recognised

Yet another issue. My scanner, Epson 4870, is not in the import section in CS4. It's there for CS3. Instead I get a basic low tech wia option - which is ,well, too low tech for any practical use.
    Does CS4 see your scanners?
The scanner will load up separately and I can still scan but it won't import into photoshop cs4.....any ideas?

I have the same scanner and am using PSCS4 64-bit. Here is my response from Epson tech support:
"The version of the TWAIN Driver and EPSON Scan Utility v3.04A that is installed on your PC is already Windows Vista 64-bit Edition
    compatible, (epson12180.exe).
You said your scanner works stand-alone through the Epson Scan utility, then everything is working fine on our side!
Our Scanner and the software is (sic) TWAIN compliant.
Right now it looks like there is a TWAIN compliant limitation in CS4, this is not an Epson issue, it is a matter for Adobe.
If you having issues running a function in Photoshop please call Adobe.
In the mean time we are looking into it, if we find there is an issue we will ask Adobe to look in to it as well."
I, too, would prefer to scan via the import function in Photoshop rather than use the stand-along function.
Are we seeing finger-pointing in regard to solving this problem?
What recourse does the regular Photoshop user have? I understand not haveng plug-ins available which are not yet ready for 64-bit, but this Epson scan issue doesn't seem to be the same problem.
    How can this be fixed?

  • CS4 Web Gallery Limitations?

    Hi,
I just tried building a web gallery using Bridge and, guess what, it seems to be limited to 10 images. I seem to remember a similar limitation in the 'test' version but I was sure they would fix it before the product went live. If somebody knows a way to get around the limit please let me know. Running Windows,Vista, CS4 Photoshop.
    Thanks,

so let me get this straight...Adobe's flagship product Ps, is now second fiddle to Lightroom in web capability?

  • CS4 Smart Guides; snapping one anchor to another

Just upgraded to CS4, I *really* can't get my head around these Smart Guides.
I've been in the preferences and tried every combination of settings, tell me if this is correct:
If I draw two boxes, grab the anchor point in the corner of one box, and try and drag it to the anchor of the other box, Smart Guides will no longer snap to that anchor.
This is getting super frustrating, thanks for any help if I'm missing something.

    Dr Griggs wrote:
Thanks for the video, but you mentioned in it you had to "Hold down Command" to make it work. I found out that was the answer for CS4. It's just super disappointing that there's no toggle for this.
To my understanding, no version of Illustrator before has ever made you do this. So that's great, after upgrading I have an extra button press to my common workflow. Awesome.
Now if you asked me why I would have told you that I had been in the rectangle tool so I was holding don the Command key to switch to the direct selection tool.
It is not necessary to hold down the command key in order for this to work. You can use the direct select tool as well if you have switched to it but I use the command key so that I cn have a different too selected such as the rectangle or pen tool when I am drawing.
Snap to point works as expected.
I hope this answers your question. Would you like to see a video? Keep in mind the selection tool would need to have the bounding box hidden or you will resize it if you try to drag a corner. But that would have been the case in any version.

  • CS4 image box won't snap to page size

I've been working in CS4 the past two days. Takes some geting used to. Page rotation though is an incredible godsend. I'm working on two booklets (16 and 32 pager) that open in calendar format (top to bottom as opposed to left to right). Love it.
Two things I have't figured out. My page size is 9x12. Everytime I try to make a 9x12 picture box the right edge is slightly larger than 9. Call it 9.125 or whatever. Why won't it just snap to the bottom right page corner? The photoshop files are 9.25 x 12.25 so theroretically if I put my loaded cursor to the top left bleed guide, shouldn't the picture place automatically into a box that size? When I place a loaded cursor at the top left corner of bleed the picture box goes out at least an inch to the right.
The other thing is I need to see my page @ 143% to see it actual size. In CS3, I wouldn't enter the info at the bottom left of the app window. Where do I enter this info in CS4?
    Thanks.
P.S. So far PS is like an alien landscape. I'll need to come in another Sat or Sun and take a tour to familiarize myself. Today is not that day, though. I do like the tabbed windows though I haven't figured out how to get a layer from one tab into a file in another tab.

If you are mac user, make sure that you have your Application Bar on (Window>Application Frame). If it´s on, you should see zoom-% filed on top of screen.
I have also had troubles with drawing full page size rectangle, it goes few millimetres larger than page, even if it doesn´t have stroke at all. I have not even try to figure out why, I have simply finished it with W and H values in control panel.
